  • Hey, Cinema Travelers! It's Dublin, Ireland and it's the early 1990s. "The Commitments" (1991), directed by Alan Parker, is a joyful and infectious film that plays out across the early 90s landscape of Dublin, Ireland. This is a soul music movie coming straight to us from the heart of Dublin, Ireland.
It's story of a group of young people who find a connection to American Soul music and that opens their eyes to a world beyond the grim streets they inhabit.
Filmed just a few years before the country experienced the radical economic change that reshaped its urban areas, the movie is a love letter to both soul music and the city its characters inhabit.

It is also a very funny movie as I remember well. I read the books before a saw the movies. So my memories are a bit mixed.
For me the most important themes are failure without grieve, and an incredible lust for life.

I've just discovered your channel and I really love it. I'm from Dublin, I don't know why, but your video made me cry a bit. I guess I am sad for what was and how lots of what you discussed in this video is gone now. I will say, I was waiting outside DUNNES STORES on GEORGE'S STREET in Dublin during the summer, and Bronagh Gallagher was there also. She was chatting to Tito from Into the West.
This video was really great ❤

I'm so glad that you enjoyed this video. Growing up in the midwest of the United States, The Commitments was one my favorite movies growing up and I loved making this video.
I know exactly how you feel about lost places. My hometown feels so distant from me because of all the "modern" changes it's undergone. I think that's why I was inspired to make this series of videos, they felt like time travel trips to far away places.

Thank you. I'm glad you like it. I don't really like the older stuff because I wasn't really sure about what I was doing. I was, as they say, finding my voice. 😂

@@CinemaCities1978 I can see, it's the same for us too. But these have a lot of charm all the same. I like them, you are a Cinema City guide and they are still very well made. 🙏

Ballymun flats are the tall apartment buildings, now demolished and where the guy is playing the drums in the window is in temple bar, which is also gone, you can see dame street/ georges street behind it:-)

I don't know how I missed this video on your channel. I'm a Dub and reading other comments from other Dubs I totally agree. The film created enormous buzz around the city and country. The film was based on the novel of the same name and 3 other of his novels were also filmed; The Snapper, The Van and (the much darker) The Woman who Walked into Doors.

I've got a copy of The Snapper on my bookshelf but I've never got around to reading it. I'll have to check out those other films.

nice one! there was a 2021 Irish television documentary celebrating 30 years since this was made (you might be able to find it online). Half of inner city Dublin got jobs as extras on that movie (including friends of mine), it had a really big impact on the bank balances of the residents of places like Sherriff St. There are two sequels based on Roddy Doyle's other two books in the Barrytown Trilogy - The Snapper and The Van - the latter has aged better. all star the great Colm Meaney.

Thanks for checking out some of these older videos. I was still working on a style and learning what works best for me (to be honest, I'm still doing that).

I will definitely look out for that documentary. My friends and I, as 11-13 year old girls in 1991 and living in the suburbs in the middle of the USA, were obsessed with this movie. We watched the VCR tape every weekend and danced to the soundtrack. It's such a wonderful film and universal story and will always have a warm place in my heart.

Apparently, if Glen Hansard is in a movie, it becomes one of my all time favs - The Commitments and Once. Thanks for the video!
