The best thing about the old style Ass Savers was that you could get them for free on bike paths after they fall off of other peoples' bikes, this one looks like it attaches a bit better!
This is why i like watching Russ. Reviews stuff that other youtube reviewers wont touch or things I didn’t know i needed. Things that solves a problem with style
The Win Wing reminds me of the "license plate fender hack" for old school Blackburn style (EX-1-ish) rear racks we used "back in the day". It turns out that a standard US license plate just covers the top of the rack. We would put the plate (usually found along side the road) on the rack throw a bungie cord over the top. It rattled like a MF on rough roads/trails, but it kept us from getting the "racing stripe" on wet roads and kept road spray off things on the rack. As a bonus it also kept any squishy gear on the rack from sagging into the wheel (not much fun to find your favorite jacket/sleeping bag/shirt has been rubbing on the tire for the last 20 miles). It was funny to see that thought incorporated into the "Mountain" rack years later.
This video makes me think about this upcoming winter. Would you ever do a video talking about how to protect your bike from salt damage, or what winter maintenance or modifications you like to see for winter bikes? Maybe studded tires, fenders, whatnot.
Awesome review as ever 👍. I like the SKS Speedrocker for my gravel bike which imho is just the perfect compromise between a full set of fenders and some clip ons.
I just ordered, without any hesitation, this Party Pace fender after viewing your video after you posted it. I like the graphics and I thought the minimalist concept was smart. I have the wonderful Topeke fender but it does take up seatpost room on one of my bikes but otherwise it's great. Thanks for the informed review.
Got the Topeka a few months back and love it. Cycling here in Vienna, Austria can get soggy at times and just switched to a Marin DSX1 and it fits great
Definitely a bit more involved, and costs more, but the SKS Speedrocker fenders are a more complete fenderset, front and rear. Initial setup is a bit finicky, but after that I can put them on in ~30 seconds. Proven themselves for me in rain and some ugly mud rides.
Thanks for the video. I like the design of the Win Wing. I’ve had good results from Mudhugger’s rear gravel hugger fender and their front gravel fender. I cut some velcro straps, and use those instead of zip ties to attach. Can switch easily between my 27.5” and 700c gravel bikes.
The key point about coverage, and why the last one isn't bad compared to the others, is water comes off the wheel at a tangent, so the water hitting your ass is coming off the back of the wheel at about 10 o'clock. The missing front part of it is only protecting the middle of the seatpost and below. With that in mind I'd suggest that angling them up a bit more could give you fractionally better coverage. This is also why, for transportation riding, full-length fenders with flaps are important. The little "normal" length ones where the front ends at 9 o'clock are stupid, because you miss the key protection for your feet and chaingear. The front should go to 7:30 or 8 o'clock and have a flap on and that can keep you very dry. Especially welcome commuting home after a rain shower.
I did this with some plastic sheet liner that came with some wire shelves that I didn't use. Then zip tied it on the under side of my racks via some wholes made with a paper hole punch. Gave it little 1" flappy sides so panniers and stuff can still be used. Guess you can say I made Fenrackders™.
I know you already foretold about the comments in the video, but anyway: There is just no substitute for full-length fenders that will keep you and your drivetrain acceptably not-soaked. The idea about fenders being not pretty somehow comes from racing, where the aero-penalty is significant enough, and where riders are put in pain and danger anyway (just think how often pro cyklists crash - compared to how often you as a non-pro cyclist would accept crashing!) (Full length) fenders are a blessing for non-professional riding and do not deserve the disrespect that many people put on them.
Yea, don't really get the look snobbery on mudguards. Ultimately looks better than looking like you've had a weird case of diarrhoea, soaked feet and a filthy drivetrain. Plus the maintenance benefits really can't be underestimated.
1+ for the WinWing, living in Britain the weather is always wet, the WinWing blocks so much spray it's almost unbelievable, also stands up well to crashes 💪
I just ordered my Party Pace fender. This will be super helpful for when I run larger tires on my gravel bike that don't fit with wrap-around fenders. You saved my ass! By the way, your slo-mos running through the puddle were very amusing.
I use SKS speedrockers and Ortlieb Quick Rack. Quiet and better coverage. I have really cool light Gacron light that fits the rack. The fenders shown don't properly protect feet and derailleurs. I like your shows. GT carbon grade elite
I have used clip-on fenders on some bikes, but it’s always been a matching front and rear set. I don’t really see how a rear fender alone would keep you dry. The front wheel spray is hitting you full on this way
Rookie mistake: Most semi-straight fenders need to be angled up into the air more than you are showing. They should not be horizontal, as it reduces coverage on both ends of the fender. For best coverage the nose should be as close to the tire as you can.
I really like the idea of the Win Wing. I have a clip on fender that attaches to my seatpost, but I have changed seat bags and now the fender won’t fit. This may solve the problem (even better with Party Pace graphics!).
Was going to comment on your last friction shifting video about how ugly the mud guard was on your bike. But now that I've seen an explanation of the Win Wing I think its a great fender. The equipment companies need to give TH-camrs more credit (money). There are a number of items I would never have considered if I hadn't seen them being used on TH-cam.
Very timely video. Many thanks. Love the Win Wing fendor. Reasonable price too. Have ordered direct from Ass Savers website. Very low shipping worldwide, a big plus for me here in Thailand! Suggest you put an affiliated link in the description so you benefit a little financially for generating the sale.
I really like the light weight fender concept but having just come through the rainy season the amount of crud that ends up on and around the BB area is concerning. A full length version would be great.
The second fender by AZZ savers is can only be used with seatstay that doesn't have a seatstay with a wishbone design. With a stay that has a wishbone design you'll have to attach it to the seatstay itself. Am I correct
Could you review Woody’s fenders made from real wood? They look beautiful and it would be cool to support a small Colorado business. I have some on my gravel bike, and they are not too expensive, thx!!
I had the ass saver detour on my gravel bike and i gotta say the fold in the middle doesn’t hold so it started to flap down quite fast. I just ordered the win wing let’s see if that’s any better.
The problem for me with most of those is that they just look crappy and destroy the overall look of the bike. And if talking fenders, then what about the front one? Or is it just important to keep the ass dry and nevermind the messy wet shoes? I've experimented with a bunch of clip on variants on my previous bike, but in the end gave up and went with proper fenders (or at least an option for installing proper ones) as one of the main parameters when choosing my new bike. Never going back to the clip on variety personally.
On the rear wheel the Wingees might be a way to have rack and fender without the cluttered look. On the front I think every black one (or more general the same color as the tires) will do.
The SKS speedrockers are great! But if you use them on your gravel/cross bike like I do you should close/seal the gap on the rear fender, where you can adjust the length. Because all the dirt and grime can go there and spread the fender until it touches the wheel. Happend to me 🙈
I tried AssSaver, it doesn't work, went full fenders as biking gods intended. Maybe AssSaver works on some skinny almost slick tires but on anything chunkier it does almost nothing
I want fixed fenders. There is just no substitute that will keep you and your drivetrain acceptably not-soaked. The idea about fenders being not pretty somehow comes from racing, where the aero-penalty is significant enough, and where riders are put in pain and danger anyway (just think how often pro cyklists crash - compared to how often you as a non-pro cyclist would accept crashing!) @@SimonHBS im not sure the aero penalty is really a thing. I remember reading articles that said that fenders can actually make a bike significantly more aerodynamic.
I don't get one thing... why would anyone wand a clip-on fenders on a gravel bike? What's wrong with full, wraparound ones? They have superior coverage, superior way of attaching and in my opinion superior looks. The only scenario when they can cause problems is when going through some serious, sticky mud. And gravel bikes are not meant to be ridden there anyway. For every other scenario clip-ons are just an utter garbage!
I'm not sure I really understand the value of a rear-only clip-on fender. You're still getting your legs wet from the spray off both the front and rear wheel, and more importantly you're still getting mucky road slime being flung up into your face from the front wheel. I feel like the bare minimum coverage I'd want from a fender would be, like, 6-8 inches near the fork crown, positioned just to keep the... not rooster tail, I guess rooster comb? of water out of my face. Like forget about my butt, it can get as wet as it likes.
I don't want to be overly dramatic but all of Man's endeavors to change the course of water are vain, futile and inevitably doomed, much like all of us.
@@jochenkraus7016 Yeah, while I prefer the likes of VO Zeppelin that IMO do an even better job, full length fenders with flaps are truly effective, and more than incrementally more effective than 'normal' length. They keep not only water, but most importantly *filth* off you. And I've had many comfortable dry commutes after a rain shower when a lot of my fellow commuters are having dirty water sprayed up their bum crack and over their feet. Now, I'm not kink-shaming, if that's your thing, but I prefer to avoid it.
I understand the practicality of these fenders, but boy are they ugly! It makes one wonder if it’s even possible to make a clip on fender that’s functional but also doesn’t detract so much from the aesthetics of the bike. Perhaps not…
On my roadbike I use a seatpost bag (similar to one of the Klickfix Contour) as clip on fender. It works like these Ass Savers and I have space for a jacket and snacks. On my touring bike I have SKS Longboard. Very effective but they look seriously uncool.
