I watched this video as a precursor to removal of the dash. I will be replacing the evaporator and heat cores in the next week. This was the one area where in most videos I watched, could be buggered up because of the clock spring. I have a manual 2010 jeep wrangler jk and will be disassembling the center console first. Then the steering column. Then, slowly, the dash. I will be taking the advice of several others, who did not film their progress, and placing every bolt in a bag of like bolts with clear labeling on what / where they came from. Once disassembled I will post a video of replacing the heater core and then the evaporator core. I will be taking my sweet time with this as the estimates to do this range from $2500 on up and the parts are only around $250. I have all the tools and would prefer to save 90% on this. What I've learned, in order to make the experience as enjoyable as possible, is there IS NO RUSH. As soon as you start to rush the job becomes a pain in the backside. There are no good videos of this procedure in it's entirety so when I have it disassembled I will show the reassembly and discuss any hickups I ran into moving through the disassembly.
Can you tell me what tool you used exactly to remove the column pieces and how exactly you removed the airbag? These are the most challenging parts of the job to me and not one video shows how to do these parts. Obviously I am not mechanically inclined.
Just saw this and really appreciate the thorough explanation. If the center bolt holding the steering wheel is loose will that cause movement in the wheel while parked? My steering wheel can be moved about an inch side to side with no resistance whatsoever while in park with the jeep off. While driving, the jeep drives straight, but its like the wheel isnt tight. My clockspring was replaced and I started having issues a short while after. Thanks ahead of time if you see this and respond.
My cruise stopped working weeks ago. Now all at once, my wipers are stuck on, signals don’t work, brights don’t work. Is there any possibility this is NOT a the clock spring? I plan to check for loose connections today, but don’t want to pay the big money for a clock spring if it could be something else…jeep says mine has already been replaced in 2018

Took my 08 in for the recall on the airbag and I believe they did the clock spring too. However after I got it back my horn wasn’t working. Took it back and they said it works fine when they hit lock on the FOB, I went and hit the horn button and it didn’t work and the service guy said “oh that” and it wasn’t from their work but if I wanted to pay $400 they would fix an issue with wiring in the steering column. Where is the horn wiring after it exits the clock spring?
I rarely ever use a puller. Usually use the palm of hand and beat on the back of the steering wheel. Then grab in different spots with both hands and rock back and forth. It will come off this way. It does not hurt the steering wheel. I have done many of steering wheels that way. Just need to be mindful of when pulling the wheel it does not pull the wiring with it.
i just replaced my clock spring and the part i bought was missing one of the inputs. we had no choice but to install it for now but now my esp and traction lights are on. could this be because of the input or is my steering wheel alignment off ???
Tips for newcomers: 1. If you can't find the top two access holes to release the tabs, it's because it's already been recalled and they installed the new shroud so the two holes are on the backside of the top of the wheel and the holes are VERY tiny. Use your pinky and slide it around the back to find the holes. 2. If one of your connectors doesn't fit into the back of the new clock spring, it may be because the mold for the female pin slots is slightly off so you will have to put the connector in at a sharp angle (classic 3rd party crap manufacturing).
Can I buy a clock spring from the dealer with the green board inside got one from Amazon and it did't have it so I took it out of the old one installed it on the Jeep and the airbag light is still on but the yellow lock tab fell out in shipping so I thing it is off
You should be able to purchase one from a dealership. I know they can be sort of expensive. But if you purchase from a dealer you know you’ll get the right part for the most part atleast.
That could be anything. Could be anything from abs issue, wheel speed sensor, brake system or electrical. Without actually diagnosing it or looking at it I cannot tell you directly. Every case is going to be different.
Great video! I have a question. I went to remove my airbag but there is only one access hole in the steering wheel to get that angled flat head into. What gives? Any solution would be greatful.
If you have a 07-11’ model you should have 3 slots one at the 6 o’clock position and the others are at the 10 and 2 also this will depend on if the recall was performed to update the steering shrouds/covers they will need to be removed first to better access those holes. If the steering covers were replaced it will take some effort and patience as it’s not easy.
It does have the recall cover on it so, the holes are not there. I heated up a flat head and melted holes where the holes would usually be. It worked. I was able to pop off the air bag.

GET YOUR DEALER TO DO IT FOR FREE. There is a recall on this. Check the two NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V288000 and 13V176000. My dealership was going to charge me $1600+ for a new airbag on my 2011 Jeep Wrangler. I had to ask 3 different advisors to have the "technician" check the clockspring first. They finally checked and replaced the clockspring under the recall with no cost to me.
If I remember i think the recall is S33. It’s been awhile it’s not as common as it was to see that recall. But I believe the one in the video also had another issue as well.
Wtf I don't have the 3 access holes to remove the airbag, only one. How can I remove it? I wonder if there was manufacturer defect in the shroud. This sucks :(

The new shrouds have a lip on them for “Dust Protection” you’ll have to remove the lower half and upper half then turn the steering wheel to access the holes. You’ll probably only be able to access the holes from where the tilt handle is. All I can say is Good luck. It’s not an easy task. Be careful not to break the shrouds.
Chris M. I finally got it off. With the shroud not having the cut outs I needed a longer curved “pry” tool to get back to where it clips on. Thanks man! The vid was extremely helpful

Tips for newcomers:

Would this fix a broken cruise control? I just replaced the switch and nothing. Trying to figure out what to do next.

You don’t have to pull the wheel just take out the 13mm bolt and it comes right off!! It’s easy

The airbag on my 2011 is held in by two 10mm bolts.

Whats more helpful is how to get the plastic shroud off.
3x T-20 Torx bit screws. You’ll need a long skinny bit. Some early models (07-08) had philips screws. But more than likely you’ll find torx screws
