I have seen this a couple of times before but you made it so clear that I finally want to try it myself. Just have to find a table cloth or something alike to get started!
I had to speed make a skirt for a cosplay and this tutorial was absolutely perfect! It was my second time sewing ever and it came out just perfect. Absolutely clear and lovely video! Thank you!
I was recently gifted 3 circular tablecloths fornthe fabric, and my first thought was circle skirts! So thanks algorithm for suggesting your video. I always appreciate that your instructions are calm, encouraging, and most of all easy to follow 😊
Ahh you actually encouraged me to start sewing, so you can imagine my excitement that you made a circle skirt tutorial! I was in the process of making a circle skirt a few weeks ago but have been SO intimidated to use my sewing machine to sew on the buttons and make button holes so this is such great encouragement that I can just do it by hand! 🙌
Yes, I love the cherry tree! 🌸🌳 I mean, it’s all about the angles and framing cause if you shift it over a bit you’d see my neighbor’s truck, and our recycling bins aren’t far from there either. But the cherry tree really is a gift! I’m very fortunate to live in such a beautiful province.
I love how you hand sew. My machine is acting up and it cost way to much to service, so I'm just gonna do my skirt by hand (except mine is a circle table cloth so it's already hemmed lol) and this video helps me to know hand sewing is possible 😁
I just discovered your fun channel when looking up circle skirts. This week I made a great circle skirt in 15 minutes with a mostly teal and navy mandala-pattern 66" round table cloth and a piece of navy elastic for the waist. Now I'm on the prowl for more nice tablecloths! I especially like that you hand sew. I grew up in the 50's. In the last year I got a bunch of vintage patterns, but didn't realize I was creating a complete vintage wardrobe until I heard you mention that clever idea. I made my first skirt when I was 10. That's 70 years ago! I'm so ready for a return to feminine flowy skirts, pin tuck tops, peplins, and nice, old-style cardigans! We used to wear 4 or 5 crinolines at a time because once washed they lost all the fluff! (I'll pass on that look.)
This video is so simple and exactly what i needed! Short but thorough explanations that are easy to understand and the over all design and methods are practical and easy :)
I’ve been wanting to make a circle skirt for a while, but wasn’t sure how to go about it. So I will definitely be utilizing this tutorial. Thank you so much! 💛
I have always wanted to make a skirt like this. I could not understand any of the TH-cam videos. You made it so easy for me to understand. I was able to make one my self by hand sewing like you.
That’s awesome! It makes me so happy that so many people have found this video easy to understand! I also find most sewing videos to be over-complicated, so I tried my best to put everything into super simple terms.
Thank you so much for this video! The instructions were so easy to follow. I started hand-sewing it several hours ago and I'm almost done! I just used fabric I have lying around but I can't wait to make more of these with nicer fabric. I'm already planning on wearing it out in a couple days and dancing in a week.
I am so glad I found this. I just learned how to sew at the beginning of covid when I was making my own masks. I'll definitely need to practice sewing more, but I am so excited to start making my own clothing. I've wanted a vintage circle skirt for so long and I'd never thought to use a tablecloth! Your channel is an absolute gem!
Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to figure out how to make a circle skirt for a while, but it hasn’t fully clicked until this video! The instructions were so easy to follow, and you seem so genuinely kind, it made me keep wanting to learn how to make the skirt!
🥰 omg thank YOU. I love seeing so many people finally understand circle skirts because of this video! I made a few and slowly learned the weird tiny ways the measurements had to change. They’re definitely a little confusing at first, but once I figured it out I was like 😱 I GET IT NOW.
Fun fact: Here in Br tablecloths are usually more expensive than buying fabric by the meter. *cries in Brazilian* Anyway, great video, great tutorial, I'll be trying sewing this! Thank you! ♥
Hey, you have a swing! That's fun 😌 Also, I'm impressed with how clean your stitches are, when I'm sewing it's usually a lot more chaotic (and I really mean A LOT 😂)
Lovely and simple video. What do I do if my fabric is not long enough to reach my desired length after I have folded it ? How do I do it in two pieces ?
Instead of the first fold-in-half, just layer two separate pieces of fabric and treat one edge as though it’s a fold. Then just keep folding it in that pie-shape and cut out the pieces as usual. You may just need to make the waist ever so slightly bigger. Like 1 inch maybe. Once you cut it out, you should have two halves of the circle. Then just sew them together so it’s one full circle. (That’s why you need a slightly bigger waist, because you need enough seam allowance to sew the half-circles together.
Omg thank you so much! I just saw this . I’ve been trying to do a floor length one for a costume for a while but all the tutorials I watched don’t seem to be working correctly 😂
Thank you! I've been looking for a tutorial to hand sew a circle skirt for a while and I'm very excited to make this! Would you ever make a video about making a petticoat/slip for skirts?
I’m so glad I could help! I might consider making a petticoat tutorial, but I recently found a real vintage petticoat at the thrift store, so I have a couple and don’t need another one at the moment. But I’m sure in the future it’ll become a video eventually!
If you were to take the circular fabric with the hole in the centre as it is, and not cut down for the fastening, could you put elastic in the waistband and it still look and feel as comfortable? I'm hoping to make some costumes for a production and it's best for dancing if they're elasticated, and much easier for me to make more of!
For sure! You’ll have to make the hole bigger so it fits over the hips, so each skirt will overall use a bigger area of fabric. The waist will also obviously have a bit of a gathered look rather than laying flat on the waist.
I put it in the wash plenty and it hold up fabulously! It’s one of my most worn garments. Just do stitches small enough that the thread doesn’t get caught on stuff. They don’t need to be microscopic, just not huge, and you should be fine! Also be careful with vintage thread. You always want to check first how strong old thread is by seeing how easily it breaks.
❤ it's excellent to see a girl that is what used to be in America bless your heart because sewing is an art and you definitely got it in the bag thank you and your tutorial was great thank you mean it❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m not really sure because it depend on how wide the fabric is, and what your waist measurement is. But mine probably used about 65”x65”. Just a guess.
To estimate, I would say 2x the skirt length you want, plus at least 1/3 of your waist measurement. That should be the length of the shortest side of the tablecloth. That’s if you want it to be made in 1 piece. But you can also make 2 half-circles and put them together.
For me, I needed a minimum of 1.8 yards if my math is correct. So 2 yards would be good. But it depends on a few things, one being your waist measurement. Mine is around 25” for reference. The other thing is how wide the fabric is. It needs to either be about the same as the length (the 1.8 yards I mentioned), or if it’s narrower, you’ll need twice the length to make the skirt out of 2 half-circles.
That can depend on your material. If you have a really drape-y fabric you might have some problems. Especially if the material is stretchy. That’s certainly something that’s best to avoid. But if you are determined to use a stretchy material, you can even out the way it hangs by putting it on a mannequin (or someone else to serve as a model) and trimming the long parts before you hem it.
Just make the measurement for the outer diameter of the circle bigger. The bigger the circle, the longer the skirt. But it does take a LOT of material to make a floor-length circle skirt.
Well, after my electric sewing machine broke when I was around 12, I kind of had to hand sew for a long time. Not only did I just get used to it and start doing it more out of habit, but I also learned that it gave me a lot of control over the stitches that a machine couldn’t give me. Plus hand sewing isn’t super loud like a machine is so I can watch Netflix at the same time!
@@MirandaMilner Ooh its so interesting.. it's true the sound of a sewing machine is crazy, I should try hand stiching myself, maybe i will enjoy it. But you are so patient! Thank you for replying. Love your videos ❤
🥰 thank you so much! I do occasionally get lazy and do gigantic stitches, but I try my best 😂. Oh yeah, it’s also just kinda fun to be able to say “I hand stitched this whole thing” ya know?
It totally depends on your measurements. For mine the minimum size would be around 65”. But that also depends on how long you want to make it and how wide of a waistband you want.
Not all of them, but plenty of them. The rest is usually second hand or thrifted, and sometimes I alter those items to make them fit my style better. But I have a whole video about why I don’t buy new clothes.
Take your waist measurement, plus 1 inch. Divide that my pi. Then divide that by 2. And there you go! That number is what I refer to as “measurement Y”. Just follow the instructions to see what to do with measurement Y.
Technically kind of… but it would be harder to get a consistent curve for one thing. And it would be divided my how many layers of fabric, so if you folded it 3 times, you’d divide it by 8. And the amount of times you fold it depends on how thick your fabric is so it seemed more complicated to explain it that way. But if you find it easier that way, then yes that should work just fine!
If I didn’t know better, I would swear that could be a poodle skirt. There would be this big poodle (usually black) at the base. Maw-rest her soul-did NOT have kind words for wearers of this skirt. She believed they belonged to or at least supported a trashy girls’ movement (a kind of sorority) they had back then. This is a very tastefully done garment indeed-just keep the poodles away from the base of this one!!

heyy pretty ty for this tuto can you tell me how much fabric u used for this skirt
I’m not really sure because it depend on how wide the fabric is, and what your waist measurement is. But mine probably used about 65”x65”. Just a guess.
How do I do the measurements if I want to use an elastic in the belt?
Just make the waist like 2 or 3 inches bigger than your actual waist. Then put the elastic in at a size that actually does fit you.
Can you tell me what the diameter of the tablecloth is and the finish length of the spirit
I believe the skirt is around 26” long. I’m not sure what the exact tablecloth size was, but likely over 60”.
Need to know the size of table cloth you should buy to start the skirt!
To estimate, I would say 2x the skirt length you want, plus at least 1/3 of your waist measurement. That should be the length of the shortest side of the tablecloth. That’s if you want it to be made in 1 piece. But you can also make 2 half-circles and put them together.

@@MirandaMilner how to do the waist band my waist then add two inches and seam allowance around the whole rectangle that part confuses me
Now all you need is some black patent leather pumps and you’ll be all set.
I used this pattern but the circle skirt in longer on some sides and short on others, is that normal?
That can depend on your material. If you have a really drape-y fabric you might have some problems. Especially if the material is stretchy. That’s certainly something that’s best to avoid. But if you are determined to use a stretchy material, you can even out the way it hangs by putting it on a mannequin (or someone else to serve as a model) and trimming the long parts before you hem it.

The math measuring is confusing, can you use a devision method?
I did use a division method. I made it pretty much as simple as it can be.

Take your waist measurement, plus 1 inch. Divide that my pi. Then divide that by 2. And there you go! That number is what I refer to as “measurement Y”. Just follow the instructions to see what to do with measurement Y.
