    Your trend videos are probably the best of its kind on youtube. Straight to the case, but showing both understanding and care for all you talk about.. well done, mate.

  • @luishagner8120
    @luishagner8120 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    One "trend" i see across all the trends you mentioned in this video is that everything appears to get more "poppy", incresingly saturated and contrast rich in terms of color and brightness, . Especially for logo design and web online published things, the muted colors that were qite trendy a few years back have vanished almost entirely

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Luis, GREAT observation. When I presented these trends LIVE last Thursday on a sneak peek TH-cam live show I talked about that a bit. This years trends are pushing out to the extremes: in color, in labor-intensiveness, in historical timeline (ie. 1890's and "throwback pixels") excellent comment.

    Sign painter never gets old on supermarket ads promo stuff. I don't know about other countries but here in Brazil, it is almost like a trademark for grocery sales. Great video. I don't trust much on trends but I always enjoy learning what is going on in the design world. Thanks!!

      @PhilipVanDusen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mro - at Mom and Pop groceries it is standard here too. But interestingly enough the "super market-looking" signs in the lower left were actually part of an art instillation.

    Damnation! You didn't post a trend video around New Year, and after three weeks I figured you wouldn't do it so I watched some other videos and read articles instead. Then this video showed up in my feed and I thought: "well, now I know everything, but I'll watch it anyway" and was promptly reminded that your trend videos are the best info to be found anywhere for an outsider to the industriy! I just love how you manage to choose just the right examples for a comprehensive overview, connect it to the past as well as current trends, and explain it so naturally yet pedagogically well thought out. Instead of feeling slightly dizzy afterwards, I feel like I could competently curate or create anything and know how to fit it comfortably inside or outside any of these trends

    Your vids are always informative and entertaining. I have to add that I really admire your jade plant. You've done a great job looking after it.
    I'm going to forego the 1890's look and the overdone stuff. Too uncool for me, a big fan of Massimo Vignelli, Dieter Rams, Paul Rand, Pentagram. Most of these trends are going backward. (The 2019 and 2018 trends were more interesting.) Yet bad flyer is great, recalling Art Chantry. Essentialism also has a great sophisticated look.

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noe - GREAT comment I like the way you think...as I'm sure you know "trends" are really about the past - a style or technique that has gained frequent enough usage that it is recognizable as a movement of sorts. Lots of people get all bent that they have seen these before, that they feel "old". But what is a "trend" is not a crystal ball. Some people expect trends to be the newest thing - but in reality they are currently POPULAR things - whether they have been around a short or a long time. They're about inspiration and where you are going to take your work next. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    • @rr7firefly
      @rr7firefly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PhilipVanDusen I personally and professionally try to stay away from "trends" as I believe they are what "followers" copy in order to appear hip. The real trends are the ones that are driven by true innovators. There is a great book that I think you would find fascinating. (You being a thinker) It is not new but its message is still very relevant. Title: "The Deviant's Advantage: How Fringe Ideas Create Mass Markets." It's about creating work in a tiny niche that very few people appreciate at first. Over time, however, these new things become edgy and then trendy. I would place Neville Brody and David Carson in that category. Let me know if you find it interesting.

    The tendency is ... "to design with all the tendencies of all the tendencies of the trends that were in fashion" There is definitely nothing new under the sun ... I think a monochromatic, easy and practical clean stroke ... memorable and Easy to sketch even for someone who doesn't know how to draw is the secret of a good logo.

      "Trends" are really about the past - a style or technique that has gained frequent enough usage that it is recognizable as a movement of sorts.

    After 15 yrs in business I can tell that design trend lists are great for designers with less skill and imagination. Good designers do what they fuckin' want, sometimes by creating trends, and sometimes not.

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was in the fashion industry for 15 years and travelled the globe shopping for trend 3x a year, Tokyo, London, Milan, Berlin etc. Trend hunting was my job. I did trend for corporations for another 12 years. I’ve worked with major trend houses like WGSN, Stylus, JWT, Pantone. The one thing I’ve learned is that trends are never limited to specific periods of time and are very fluid in how they appear. Trends are revisited, altered, revised - new perspectives are added - they disappear and then they come back over and over (particularly in the fashion industry) (Russian Constructivism - 100 years old - never really goes away). Some trends take a few years to grab hold and become recognizable as popular.
      No one person can create a trend. Trends become trends by mass adoption of the aesthetic by definition. So people like you, who may see and recognize trends early - may be mentally registering them way before other people so they may seem older to you - but not others. Too many folks who have no formal training in art/design history they are totally new. I can never assume the knowledge base of my audience. Anyway I hope you were somehow inspired.
