I don't often subscribe to youtube channels but you deserve it for this simple to follow tutorial. After wasting my time with an old copy of another programme I went hunting on the web and your video came up. So simple to use and free to boot. Thanks Mike, really easy to follow and just the right level of detail given the amount of options that the tool gives. Its a shame that the companies that make these keep dropping the clone option from the free option but I cant blame them, I cant remember ever upgrading to a paid version except maybe 15 years ago on a data recovery product. My own clone on an old PC took about 4 hours as I was copying about 500gb sata ssd to 2tb sata ssd via USB using the hot option.
Thanks for this video Mike. I've wasted a lot of time recently trying free versions of software only to find that the clone feature has been disabled. So this program will help, might download it before they change it. Keep up the good work 👍
Fantastic video. I was terrified to use this program because of the warning- you allyed my fears and i went for it. All succesfully copied. Thanks so much. Great instruction. No BS either. Thank you so much Mike for this tutorial. I just completed upgrading my laptop from a 500 Gb SSD to a 2 Tb SSD. I followed you video and the process worked like a charm. I bought a USB enclosure for the 2 TB drive and plugged in into the USB C port on my laptop. Once the clone was completed, I turned off the power and opened my laptop and swapped out the 500 Gb drive for the 2 Tb drive. I powered up the computer and nothing changed except I now have 1 1/2 Tb more space on the hard drive. I watched several tutorials on cloning a hard drive, but yours was the most straight forward and easy to understand. Keep up the good work.

Disk Genius worked perfectly. 1 tb ssd to 1 tb m.2 nvme (in an external USB 3.1 enclosure). 800 gigs took 30 mins. Did the hot method, surprised it worked as this is usually a problem when cloning.
Thank You! Finally a free program that says what it does....and doesn't try and charge you under false pretense! Thank You for the help. Wish I could give you 100 likes!
Only Video to work. Exact copy of everything was there. Windows, office, Games, Desktop wallpaper. Thanks in tons sir for the genuine tutorial. Liked & Subbed. It took me 21 minutes for 500 GB cloning. 👌
Update Mike... I used this software to go from a 250GB nvme boot drive to a 1TB boot drive. Worked perfectly. 👍 Thanks for walking me through this. Take care guys. Cheers
Disk Genius Free works very well and has a ton of partition tools built in. Now that Macrium and MiniTool no longer support free transfers (cloning) it's a great program to have. PLUS it will transfer to a smaller drive as long as there is enough space on the target drive to accept the transfer. No more equal or larger drive size required message blocking the transfer, even the Aomei Partition Assistant I bought would do that. So Disk Genius Free will be my GoTo for cloning and monthly Incremental System Backups, cause it's easy to do. Thanks for the very informative video.
As far as I can tell, you can still use macrium to clone, and they offer a 30 day free trial. I haven't tried using it yet so I'm not sure if they make you input a credit card or something.
What a great piece of software! Having recently manually moved all my games from 2x drives onto new 2Tb m.2 and then swapped drive letters around so steam / epic etc werent aware of any changes then this software would made it so much quicker and easier to achieve. Thanks for sharing Mike & Kath, have a great weekend 🐈👍

I Want to say thanks Mike. this honestly saved me when I was stuck installing a brand-new SSD in place of my old SSD. I followed the instructions and cloned my old SSD onto already installed HDD and from there onto the new SSD as my pc only had room for one NVME M2 slot. no joke I was stressing out trying to fix it on my own with other guides till I tried this.
Cloning drives is why I use Samsung drives with their 1 click cloning software. Unfortunately, they are on a higher end for cost. This looks like great alternative for a cheaper drive. Good video.
I use the older free Macrium Reflect rescue USB thumb drive to create images from all my machines as a backup. That drive still supports a lot of hardware, including my new Lenovo Ideapad Slim 14” laptop.
I am upgrading from a 1Tb to a 2Tb Nvme, does Disk Genius automatically adjust the OS partition to use all available space of the 2Tb or should I manually adjust it? Thanks in advance. Love your videos by the way. Keep it up.

Can you clarify the difference between "System Migration" and "Clone Drive" in this software? If you (or I) use the Clone Disc option, won't the newly cloned drive be bootable?
Thanks for the video. I've used Macrium free once a year for a few years. I'd rather do a clean install of Windows than pay £50 pa. I had a look around, and saw this video. I installed it this morning, and have cloned my boot drive this afternoon. Easy, not very quick, but free. The UI is about as simple as can be. Thanks for the heads up.
thanks for the tip having a basic feature locked behind a paywall is a pain for someone who will just use the software once but can be a way for the developer to attract attention of pottential paying users
Thank you for this video. My question is...After using this procedure to clone my SSD, does all of the software that was installed on the source SSD remain functional on the target SSD? Or, does the software need to be reinstalled? Thank you!
it will produce an exact copy of the drive without moving or deleting so when finished you have two identical drives both working as they did before you started
Thanks mike, like you i started noticing the options for free drive ghosting have become more and more limited everytime i do a drive swap, this will be handy.

Nice!! I just purchased a new laptop, be here this week. It has Win 11, I dont like 11 and all the bloatware. Going to clone my Win10 (desktop) then install in new laptop. This software should work great for this job!
Basic question _ but when installing DiskGenius and it asks where to install it and warns "take care..please do not install this app to the partition where you want to recover files.." does that mean the source drive, or the target drive? In my case, I will be doing system migration from current C drive 128GB to a new drive 1T that I will replace the current c drive ssd with.
Does this also take over any preferences you have set up in Windows? Such as your Windows Activation or if you have certain folders excluded from things such as the anti-virus protection of Windows itself?
Hello, trying to figure out how to back my drive to an image file? When I try the backup feature it asks for a file to backup to, it doesn't create a new one?
quick tip, if your old mobo doesn't have an m.2 slot, you may have an extra pcie slot available and can get an m.2 adapter for it. Even the 4x slot is capable of 3000/mbs. much faster than sata!
Hasleo has a PE partition option for a recovery boot menu, tad annoying having a boot menu every boot however there is a BCDedit work around EDIT(1) there is a checkbox work around in Advanced System settings also I was too lazy to look 😫. EDIT(2) hasleo does clone & backup too tbf I have never used it to recover but cloning works
worked like a charm, with no BS. I didn't have the same fancy pants drives he does in the video, so it took a good half hour to clone 256gb, but who's complaining when I didn't cost a penny. Sweet thank you. Shouldn't this function just be part of windows?
Thank you so much, i did step by step with your video. It worked like magic. In the process of codying hdd i got error about the disk bunch of time but it worked regardless
Please help. I had two drives to move over to one new m.2. Moved the first one with the os on it and it worked fine, but now there is greyed out "free space" that I can't choose as target for the second game/pics drive. I can't seem to find any clear answer. Does anyone know where I can find out how to use that space?
I would have liked to have seen this performed using the WindowsPE option. I’m wondering if you choose that option is it best to install the software on a different hard drive than the one you’re cloning?
so I do have one question... I the clone and it took less than 15 min but the new/clone SSD is larger than the source. When it was finished all the extra space was considered unallocated and therefore space lost. I need to reclone but make sure that it doesn't unallocate the free space. Can you help me with that
Looks like I'll be using this now, as I failed to catch a giveaway of one of the others this time... Free version still on and still covers what's needed
i use for years Samsung Data Migration. Free to use software that only work with Samsung SSD. I have 3 Samsung M.2 SSD'S and this software works perfect. It creates a snapshot "clone" of the current situation. 2 time's i needed the clone for repair. I make a clone every week, sometimes an extra clone in high-risk situations.
Why the clone option does not make the target drive bootable ? it doesn't make any sense. If all the OS file system is cloned you should be able to boot from the target drive after cloning.
Okay I just hit the button we're going to find out. 4 hours later it backed up pulled my hard drive install the SSD and I'm up and running. Accept QuickBooks 2013 says error regarding license I reinstalled the disc with the same license that is registered to no avail. Anyone have any ideas

am trying same steps and told me Failed to update boot related parameters for target system, and target system may not be able to boot properly. Error:Init failed (Code Line:215)
I have a question after i did this from cloning my 1tb to my 2tb, after the 2tb was put in it shows on disk manager but not MY PC in file explorer it still only shows 1tb in file.
Nice find Mike... worked really well, even resetting the boot drive automatically. Pleased to find this now that MiniTool and EaseUS charge (more than the cost of a 1TB drive) for the cloning function.
I keep getting the error message for “Failed to create snapshot for following partitions. Recovery(0) System(1)”. Then it ask me do I want to lock partition and continue.
Nevermind. I just went along with the process and it worked. Swapped out the drives and everything booted up successfully. My new drive is showing as my the windows drive.
Cheers - I haven't heard of this one before. The big disadvantage most of these type of programs have is it will copy over the windows partition (great for backup only) and make it bootable, but forgets about (or won't allow) the other system recovery partitions to be copied as well. This seems to copy everything over. I'm keen to give it a try as I have a few PCs I'll be upgrading soon.

quick tip, if your old mobo doesn't have an m.2 slot, you may have an extra pcie slot available and can get an m.2 adapter for it.
Shouldn't this function just be part of windows?
lol I think Microsoft have enough anti trust issues as it is without including a disk cloning system
Thank you so much, i did step by step with your video. It worked like magic. In the process of codying hdd i got error about the disk bunch of time but it worked regardless
Glad it helped
Please help. I had two drives to move over to one new m.2. Moved the first one with the os on it and it worked fine, but now there is greyed out "free space" that I can't choose as target for the second game/pics drive. I can't seem to find any clear answer. Does anyone know where I can find out how to use that space?
create a new partition in the greyed out space, then do a disk data clone
I did install this last week - nice tool to have - thanks for the video - I'm sure I will refer back to it at sometime.
sad that macrium is not free anymore, but this seems to be a viable alternative
Very clear straight to the point tutorial . Thanks !
I would have liked to have seen this performed using the WindowsPE option. I’m wondering if you choose that option is it best to install the software on a different hard drive than the one you’re cloning?
it uses the Windows shadow volume copy so it isn't a problem
so I do have one question... I the clone and it took less than 15 min but the new/clone SSD is larger than the source. When it was finished all the extra space was considered unallocated and therefore space lost. I need to reclone but make sure that it doesn't unallocate the free space. Can you help me with that
you can just go into the windows disk management and extend the drive size into the unused space.
or clone with the resize option enabled
Looks like I'll be using this now, as I failed to catch a giveaway of one of the others this time... Free version still on and still covers what's needed
i quite like it and it seems to be less of a resource hog than Macrium was
i use for years Samsung Data Migration. Free to use software that only work with Samsung SSD. I have 3 Samsung M.2 SSD'S and this software works perfect. It creates a snapshot "clone" of the current situation.
2 time's i needed the clone for repair.
I make a clone every week, sometimes an extra clone in high-risk situations.
always a good idea to make a backup
I use that Mini tool partition/shadowmaker software, it's really good bit of kit, always does a good job of backing up, cloning etc :)
Thanks for the tip!
I think that minitool has dropped the clone from the free version
Why the clone option does not make the target drive bootable ? it doesn't make any sense. If all the OS file system is cloned you should be able to boot from the target drive after cloning.
not sure sorry, thought i noticed an option for that
Mike Thank You. I just get new M.2's and your video will be very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Okay I just hit the button we're going to find out.
4 hours later it backed up pulled my hard drive install the SSD and I'm up and running. Accept QuickBooks 2013 says error regarding license I reinstalled the disc with the same license that is registered to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas
did it work for you

thank you, after watching a lot of useless videos on yt finally i found a useful one
Thanks for the kind words
Ty, the software did everything perfectly!
Very glad that you review this Disk Genius Free - Always bought Samsung drives (with Samsung software limited to target Samsung drives) - - - Great Review Mike thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Ive been looking for something like this to migrate my Gen 3.0 NVME to a new Gen 4.0. Thanks for this.
if you use it let us know how you get on
am trying same steps and told me
Failed to update boot related parameters for target system, and target system may not be able to boot properly.
Error:Init failed (Code Line:215)
not sure what is going on there sorry
Hello Sir, I am from Tamil Nadu, India. Really very very helpful this video. Thank you very much Sir.
You are most welcome
Very well evaluated with notable caveats. Appreciate your work. 👍
Many thanks!
I have a question after i did this from cloning my 1tb to my 2tb, after the 2tb was put in it shows on disk manager but not MY PC in file explorer it still only shows 1tb in file.
you need to resize the drive in disk management to use the unallocated space
FANTASTIC, SIMPLE and IT FINALLY WORKS
Glad it helped
Nice find Mike... worked really well, even resetting the boot drive automatically. Pleased to find this now that MiniTool and EaseUS charge (more than the cost of a 1TB drive) for the cloning function.
thanks, and glad you found it useful, i use this pretty much all the time now
The new paradigm is clone to better drives on schedules from more finite failure estimates. A victory in consumer computing.
I keep getting the error message for “Failed to create snapshot for following partitions. Recovery(0) System(1)”. Then it ask me do I want to lock partition and continue.
Nevermind. I just went along with the process and it worked. Swapped out the drives and everything booted up successfully. My new drive is showing as my the windows drive.
glad you figured it out in the end
thankyou it works spot on my comp started up straight away
glad to hear it
absolutely best video out there for transitioning you SSD to new drive.
Glad you think so!
Thank you so much, as easy as copying and pasting it to some other sd card. Thank you so much. It works !
You're welcome!
thanks a lot men, i look for hours difference softwares and and just this one works perfectly, FREE and very fast.
You're welcome!
Cheers - I haven't heard of this one before. The big disadvantage most of these type of programs have is it will copy over the windows partition (great for backup only) and make it bootable, but forgets about (or won't allow) the other system recovery partitions to be copied as well. This seems to copy everything over. I'm keen to give it a try as I have a few PCs I'll be upgrading soon.
hope you enjoy using it, i really enjoy the simplicity
