Indeed. I've never considered them Nu Metal as many people say, i've always felt their music more as Industrial Metal. Although they flirted with some Nu Metal on Shadow Zone and Start A War, but overall their style sounds more Industrial Metal than anything else,
There are 2 people on the vocals, Tony Campos and Wayne Static, Tony did a lot more of the random and deep growls on each album, seeing them live will show you this too.
I love how lighthearted, and downright funny at times, the angry moments in the tracks are. This was that late 90s sound that just makes me think of glow sticks, huge spikey colored hair and JNCO pants.
This is in my top 3 albums of all time. It's perfectly paced and realized and 100% unique to itself. The energy is out of this world. My girlfriend had never heard them and she always has the "stupid" sample stuck in her head 😅, always catch her listening to it when I least expect jamming out haha.
Wayne static was one of the most unique voices in metal his vocals from harsh to soft where so different, I could see how you would think it was two singers. his guitar player did backup vocals from time to time but most of the vocal work is Wayne.
It’s actually the bassist Tony Campos that did some backing vocals. He’s also in a death metal band so the real low screams are Tony. Like the “Yeah” in Push It.
So Wisconsin Death Trip was a book that the band came across (so the story goes) that documented the harsh living conditions in the state and surrounding areas, including all the different ways people died. They mainly just liked the title and didn't base anything off the contents. It has also been turned into a dramatized documentary.
@Ian Dawson I remember reading that’s where the album title came from. I believe Wayne found the book at a flea market. Otsegolation (if I remember correctly) is named after the county of Otsego in NY
Yes! What a great, unique record. No one else has ever done the same kind of dance-y industrial metal. Push It is one of my favourite songs ever, fantastic riff and a song that just never stops. The production of the album overall is great too, love how understated the snare is, really shifts the focus to how percussive the guitar is.
Yeah, the production on this one was so cool! I love how they blended the heavy industrial tones with the really upbeat techno side, and then threw on the ambient and cinematic elements too.
You could also put there bands like Spineshank, Powerman 5000, some Fear Factory, even Dope. Rammstein? There are also many bands like that but with more electronic focus than metal.
One of the best metal albums ever made. I was lucky enough to see them live while they were touring for this album and it is still one of the best live shows I've ever seen even 25 years later. RIP Wayne Static
I remember how impacting this album was the first time I heard Push it on the radio. I was hooked on this band ever since. You have many albums by them that need your attention.

Yes! Static-X was definitely integral to my musical taste back in high school, I'm glad you review their debut! I love how Static-X blended all the cool sound effects and samples into their music. It's definitely a product of its time, but if you compare it to metal music today...it's unique and it blows it away! My faves would probably be "Push It," "Sweat of the Bud," and "Wisconsin Death Trip." Static-X and some other industrial/metal bands of the time inspired me to write my own sci-fi themed rock music. Side note: Static-X was/is excellent live, too. Their live album "Cannibal Killers Live" is proof that they could pull off the material in concert...no easy feat! Rest In Peace, Wayne Static!
Got to say, I am loving these reactions and the albums you are choosing to cover. Takes me back to my high school days of the late 90s/early 2000s when I first got into metal. I would highly recommend a lesser known album from this era but completely in the same vibe. American Head Charge - The War Of Art. It is one of my favorites of all time and got to talk to the drummer Chris about it on my podcast. Keep reacting to this great era of metal!

His dad, Dick, would be a sub bus driver for me sometimes and would give me tapes of Wayne’s. I only ever met Wayne once tho. Made him ice cream when I was working at the Whippy Dip. RIP homie.
I go back and forth between Obsolete and Demanufacture as their best album but Obsolete is just so massive and intense I think it's their high water mark. Then every bonus track on the deluxe version is a banger. They were so ahead of their time, Dino Cesarez doesn't get nearly enough credit for all the guitarists he's inspired. So many awesome riffs, from deathcore bands especially, were being done by Dino back in the 90s. Just listen to him or 90s era Meshuggah and it sounds like a lot of the deathcore from the last 15 years.
@@mollyesanborn they'll surprise you, especially Concrete (their 1st album, but it wasn't released until 2002 due to lawsuits, so Fear Factory released Soul of a new machine, then Demanufacture (main album) obsolete (the fan favourite) changes direction, Digimortal ( it's, so so for some) takes their sound back to Demanufacture with a mix of obsolete, then there's Archetype (very good) transgression (mediocre, some good songs) Mechanize (good) the Industrialist (worst) Genexus (great) Aggression continuum (pretty good, last album to feature Burton, the vocalist)

I love this album, all the electronics were mostly done with sequencing on the Roland MC-303 groove box. I was using one for my band back then and when this album came out it was so cool to pick out alot of familiar synth sounds. The 90’s Roland groovebox’s have such a unique sound my band uses an MC 505 still!
I remember buying this album when it came out and it still gets heavy rotation. Several years later I was lucky enough to work on the road on tour with Static-X and see them preform almost every night. Stem/Sweat Of The Bud is my favorite off this album too. Subscribed 🤘🏻
One of the heaviest albums of the 90s for me (and there was certainly no shortage of them). Sounds relatively simplistic on the surface, but has layers upon layers when you really listen. Wayne Static’s vocals have a really unhinged quality to them on this one. Their follow up albums didn’t really do much for me, but Wisconsin Death Trip always has a special place in my heart.
You put it perfectly, there's kind of a simplistic/repetitive-ness to this album surface level but they use a lot of layering and changeups with the sound that make it a lot more complex than it appears.

It's great all these years later seeing you enjoying it just like I did over 20 years ago :) Your breakdown was very easy listening/watching and you obviously know your stuff when it comes to sound and music. first time listening to Static X...from the first track I was immediately thinking the same thing, White Zombie...the funk, the electronica in the background, the vocal delivery, and even the voice samples, but then things took a very different turn at Stem, which sounded like a heavy Portishead-like track...the second half of the album sounded so different to the first, I'm still not sure what to make of them
YES, this was exactly my thoughts on this album too! I don't think I mentioned it in my reaction but Stem is definitely a change of tone, the album takes on a more electronic, sorta futuristic sound. I find it interesting too that all of my favorite tracks are from the second half (stem, sweat of the bud, wisconsin death trip, and the trance is the motion). I guess I have a bias toward the more drawn out, atmospheric side of their music.
WoW! Never expected this honestly. Static-X is one of my favorite bands for sure. This album through Start A War are classics for me. The passing of Wayne probably hit me harder than any other musician in my life. They put out a new album after many years with old recorded vocals from him and the singer of the band DOPE doing other parts and it is amazing. A true return to form despite him being gone. Personally I think their 3rd album, Shadow Zone, is their Magnum Opus. Highly recommend getting to that one at least as they mixed the industrial and heavy perfectly with more melodic. The song writing just went to another level. Nobody did it like Static-X. Truly a unique band.

Considering you're reacting to literally my entire library from my teenage years, you might as well give Incubus a shot. Fungus Amongus is another of those "fun" albums to listen to, kinda like Wisconsin Death Trip or SOAD's self-titled. Oh and great video, as always.
Incubus is a band I've definitely wanted to dive into, Science gets recommended a lot but maybe I'll start at the beginning with Fungus Amongus. Either way, I can't wait to hear their stuff!

i came across your reaction video today while jamming to some of my favorite artists as i drank my guinness and sifted through my coins. static x from their first album has always been ahead of their time and in a league of their own. it is such a shame that we will never again be able to hear the masterpieces that came from the mind of Wayne Static (RIP) he is greatly missed. thank you for popping up on my page and i loved seeing your reaction. it was genuine and seemed to have the effect that it had on me the first time i heard them. i look forward to seeing more of your reactions.

@@mollyesanborn Their first 3 albums are tremendous. Their new album "Project Regeneration" is pretty great. They used Wayne's left over recorded vocals and wrote a new album with them and it turned out great. RIP Wayne.
I agree with you - but I also say that Shadow Zone is one of the most underrated albums ever written. It's incredibly good music; the arrangements were much more laser-focused, less "trance" styling than previous work, the production was even more consistent...it was different Static-X, but it was the best representation of what it could've been done at that time in music. Incredibly underrated in my opinion. It's also the most accessible, I would say.
Sweat of the bud is my absolute go to song. I didn’t get to experience them when they first came out or even with the original singer static.... thee energy he had was immaculate and I could just imagine the crowd back in the early 2000s 💔

Great review. I really love the album, but it did come out when I was in college. They would play "Trance is the Motion" at their early club shows (I think Stem as well). Static-X live was interesting because of the mix of the heavy industrial stuff and then the dancy melodic stuff. If you keep going down the Static-X rabbit hole, you will see more "Ostego" songs. Ostego is a town in Michigan. The story goes that Wayne had a fake ID and he was "Dean from Ostego".
Otsego* It’s a small town with a “sister” city a few miles away (Plainwell) and both towns are roughly equidistant between Kalamazoo & Grand Rapids in West Michigan. Wayne Static spent a lot of his teenhood in that area as he grew up along the lakeshore in Shelby (along the US-31 corridor with towns like New Era, Montague, Whitehall, Pentwater, etc.) not much to do in those towns after dark for a college-aged kid or high schooler. So many of those kids would go to Muskegon or a bigger city such as Grand Rapids to shoot pool or hang out. Wayne would eventually move to Chicago in the mid 1980’s to form a band called Deep Blue Dream with a pre-Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan. Unlike Corgan who stayed in Chicago and found success with the Pumpkins, Wayne’s band ended up moving to Los Angeles and after a couple of changes, the band “Static” was formed in the mid-90’s and played all around LA. There are a couple of videos from that era floating around of gigs under the Static name. The X part came later as they signed to a major label to record Wisconsin Death Trip as I believe there was already a band called Static so, they had to change the name. The title Wisconsin Death Trip is named after a 1973 book by the same name. The author’s name escapes me at the moment, but I actually had the book for a while when I was younger. Source: I’m a native West Michigander who came up during the same period as Wayne.

They were a fun band, we used to joke they were the perfect soundtrack to acid and Slim Jim's lol. Glad you enjoyed the album and yeah, in retrospect the guitar tones and distortion has a bit of Zombie to them. I saw them live with Soulfly and their set was one wall of distortion but Wayne's voice sounded great even if every song sounded exactly the same lol.
I love these guys early albums, so entertaining...and still to this day their sound is quite unique in its simplicity. Favs on this are Love Dump & The Trance is the Motion. Their second album, Machine, is a definite listen and maybe their third, Shadow Zone, but by Shadow Zone they had replaced their original guitarist who was also responsible for a lot of the electronic stuff. I never bothered with anything beyond this so others may have to recommend whether anything's worth a listen. I saw them support Fear Factory and Korn, was an awesome lineup and they were great. Edit: If you listen to Machine, try and get one with the original studio version of Cold. This song was on The Queen of the Damned OST and it was reworked and I think to it's detriment.

Start a war and cannibal rock. I even like the weird electronic tracks on beneath between beyond. First cds I ever bought as a kid were their discography. Didn't like the last one much though
Start a War has the orginal guitarist back and to me, its a mix of WDT and Machine if you will but updated. Check it out. Dirt house, Skinny man and My Damnation are stand outs for me.

Oh man this album. I was in 7th grade when someone handed me a demo TAPE. Yes, a tape that had Push It and Bled For Days on it. I played that tape so much I wore it out. When the album finally came out on CD I bought it immediately and still listen to this day. Amazing band.
Static X Wisconsin Death Trip is a blast. Loved this album since I was in my late teens, still do. Would be great to see you review Nirvana's Bleach, probably my favorite studio album by Nirvana

Greetings. Many people, like me, showed their love for Static X after Need For Speed Underground and the song "The Only". Once you listen, you won't stop. Evil Disco is on the radar again, which is good news. As for the album. Wisconsin Death Trip is a 1973 non-fiction book by Michael Lesy, based on a collection of late 19th century photographs by Jackson County, Wisconsin, photographer Charles Van Schaick - mostly taken in the city of Black River Falls - and local news reports from the same period. It emphasizes the harsh aspects of Midwestern rural life under the pressures of crime, disease, mental illness, and urbanization. Wisconsin Death Trip is the band's very first and most successful album. Push It is the best song, according to most listeners. We are waiting for Project Regeneration part.2. Static X is one of those bands I was always indifferent to...but somehow, Push It, Bled for Days, and Love Dump nearly always find their way onto lots of my "get stuff done" playlists.
Another one of my faves! you should definitely check out their diskography in order of release to get a good feel of their progression as a band. people do tend to prefer their first three albums but I've enjoyed all of it! Your perspective mirrors my own experience all those years ago, keep it up molly!
First time viewer, Randomly got suggested this video and funny enough Static-X was the first metal band I discovered when I was a teenager. I appreciate your insight into the album and it's soooo cool to hear someone listen to my favorite childhood band and discover all the cool quirks that I fell in love with so many years ago. I'll be looking forward to your reaction to Machine. Its my favorite album. it is different though, a bit more focused on the metal elements and it tones down the weirdness.

An awesome review to one of my favorite albums. Thanks for giving it a full listen and sharing your thoughts, I subscribed and would like to know your thoughts on their more recent album with the new singer Xer0 since Wayne has passed. A lot of it is old vocals from Wayne, and new music created around it to make songs from them, but also a few of their own new songs with the new singer, Xer0. The album is Project Regeneration, and there is expected to be a volume 2 that finishes the material they had to work with from Wayne's isolated vocals.
I remember when this came out it had a great vibe and loved it. Got to seèm them twice , hell of show. And the bassist Tony Campose does the backing vocals. Mostly the growls and Wayne did the higher pitch. Mixed well. Snot - get some Fear Factory - obsolete Gwar - Scumdogs of the universe Suggestions. Good reaction, Molly keep them coming.
This album was my shit back in middle school, it was the first live show I was allowed to go to with my friends and no adults....I lost my glasses in the pit and had to go blind the rest of the night. Lol Do Type O Negative-October Rust next!

Random recomendation: If you want to listen to a good mix of electronica, metal, industrial, and some occasional pop melodies, i recommend you to listen to 2016 album of Circle Of Dust called "Machines Of Our Disgrace". This album is made by just one guy called Klayton (but nowadays this solo one-man-band thing is not uncommon, because even kids now can do some ok production on their laptop), and it's basically a resurrection of his first project from late 80s/90s, after almost 18 years of hiatus (due to his old label issues, and he didn't even own the rights to his first COD albums for many years). But he's mostly known for his other projects, such as Celldweller, Scandroid, and some others.
Static X is one of my favourite bands growing up. I got Wisconsin Death Trip when it came out and was instantly hooked. My favourite Static X album is Cannibal, that one is a straight punch to the ears. Amazing!!
Drowning Pool, Powerman 5000, and The Union Underground are other bands that have this kind of feel. At some point I want to get your reaction to the first two Soulfly albums. Soulfly is like Slipknot but more funky with the grooves and tribal with the drums. I think you would love them. Plus the first two albums have guest appearances from Chino (Deftones), Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), and Corey Taylor (Slipknot). Keep up these awesome reactions Molly! Hope you're doing well 😊
You mentioned that Otsegolation could be in a movie soundtrack, well it was but in a videogame soundtrack called "Omega Boost" for PS1, can be heard in the main menu and in the final boss battle. Greetings from Mexico.
There's a few good tracks on this album, nostalgic stuff, I remember this album because my friend always put it on whilst playing driving games on the PlayStation, but overall it's not something I'd put on myself, even today. However live Static X were great, I saw them in '09 at a festival, the weather was amazing, they came on and I just remember the audience jumping to Pushit in unison, never seen a crowd move in such synchronicity it was amazing! I was only 4 people from the front, great times, RIP Wayne Static. Trivia: they shared a rehersal space with the Smashing Pumkins at one time.
It's so wonderful to see someone going back to and bringing attention back to Static-X. This was one of the main industrial metal bands (Evil Disco) bands I listened to way back in high school. I got to see them at a show in Vegas (Extreme Thing) while on tour for their album Cannibal. I met the band that day for a signing, and actually got to talk to them for a bit, some of the nicest guys, Wayne seemed genuinely happy to talk to the fans, and they brought some serious energy to there performance. I bruised my ribs against the barricade during there set, and couldn't hear right for the next few days, had a blast. Was really sad when I heard about Wayne dying.
Just caught the first sentence in your video and wanted to comment before watching the whole thing. When Static X first hit the mainstream, their merchandise featured the slogan “Keeping Disco Evil.”, so you weren’t far off in your assessment, lol. Also I’m going to put my three favorite tracks out there and see we if we agree. I like “Loser”, “I’m With Stupid”, and “Love Dump”.. and “Wisconsin Death Trip” gets an honorable mention.
This album is one of my favorites of all time every track on here is a hit. I was 17-18 when it came out but I still know the words to every track. I don’t even have a favorite song because it’s so hard to pick one from the album I love it
Thought I lobby for American Head Charge again lol.. As looking on spotify at numetal playlists AHC actually are more popular than I originally once thought as no-one ever suggests them, but they always have one or two tracks in the "best of" numetal playlists. Also for those that haven't yet discovered them you would be introducing them to a somewhat forgotten gem, at the time of their debute War of Art they were just as big as Mudvayne and I would even argue that their debute is "better" than LD50. They have two albums that are worth your attention, first War of Art (as I've previously mentioned) and 'The Feeding' which I don't think Spotify has the rights too yet, so you may need to use YT or buy the CD to review/react. Anway, I enjoy these videos, they bring a lot of great memories back, and your enthusiasm is contagious, I've found myself digging out my old collection of CDs and having a headbang session lol it really was an amazing era of music, so yeah thanks!

I've seen Static-X once with Wayne. And once with Xer0 (believed to be Edsel Dope). They always put on an amazing show! They will be on tour this year with Powerman 5000, mudvayne, and Rob Zombie. Go see them! It may not be Wayne anymore. But they're still awesome! 🤘

Filter - Short Bus was my favorite breakout industrial album I think. It was unique but a foundation of like old school ministry sounding industrial.

Wayne static was one of the most unique voices in metal his vocals from harsh to soft where so different, I could see how you would think it was two singers. his guitar player did backup vocals from time to time but most of the vocal work is Wayne.

It’s actually the bassist Tony Campos that did some backing vocals. He’s also in a death metal band so the real low screams are Tony.

So Wisconsin Death Trip was a book that the band came across (so the story goes) that documented the harsh living conditions in the state and surrounding areas, including all the different ways people died. They mainly just liked the title and didn't base anything off the contents. It has also been turned into a dramatized documentary.

I got to see Static-X a handful of times between 00-07. Hands down, they are the best I've heard and seen live. Wayne had phenomenal stage presence.
Yes! What a great, unique record. No one else has ever done the same kind of dance-y industrial metal. Push It is one of my favourite songs ever, fantastic riff and a song that just never stops. The production of the album overall is great too, love how understated the snare is, really shifts the focus to how percussive the guitar is.
Yeah, the production on this one was so cool! I love how they blended the heavy industrial tones with the really upbeat techno side, and then threw on the ambient and cinematic elements too.

You could also put there bands like Spineshank, Powerman 5000, some Fear Factory, even Dope. Rammstein? There are also many bands like that but with more electronic focus than metal.

Yes! Static-X was definitely integral to my musical taste back in high school, I'm glad you review their debut! I love how Static-X blended all the cool sound effects and samples into their music. It's definitely a product of its time, but if you compare it to metal music today...it's unique and it blows it away! My faves would probably be "Push It," "Sweat of the Bud," and "Wisconsin Death Trip." Static-X and some other industrial/metal bands of the time inspired me to write my own sci-fi themed rock music. Side note: Static-X was/is excellent live, too. Their live album "Cannibal Killers Live" is proof that they could pull off the material in concert...no easy feat! Rest In Peace, Wayne Static!
Got to say, I am loving these reactions and the albums you are choosing to cover. Takes me back to my high school days of the late 90s/early 2000s when I first got into metal. I would highly recommend a lesser known album from this era but completely in the same vibe. American Head Charge - The War Of Art. It is one of my favorites of all time and got to talk to the drummer Chris about it on my podcast. Keep reacting to this great era of metal!

I go back and forth between Obsolete and Demanufacture as their best album but Obsolete is just so massive and intense I think it's their high water mark. Then every bonus track on the deluxe version is a banger.
They were so ahead of their time, Dino Cesarez doesn't get nearly enough credit for all the guitarists he's inspired. So many awesome riffs, from deathcore bands especially, were being done by Dino back in the 90s.
Just listen to him or 90s era Meshuggah and it sounds like a lot of the deathcore from the last 15 years.
@@mollyesanborn they'll surprise you, especially Concrete (their 1st album, but it wasn't released until 2002 due to lawsuits, so Fear Factory released Soul of a new machine, then Demanufacture (main album) obsolete (the fan favourite) changes direction, Digimortal ( it's, so so for some) takes their sound back to Demanufacture with a mix of obsolete, then there's Archetype (very good) transgression (mediocre, some good songs) Mechanize (good) the Industrialist (worst) Genexus (great) Aggression continuum (pretty good, last album to feature Burton, the vocalist)

I love this album, all the electronics were mostly done with sequencing on the Roland MC-303 groove box. I was using one for my band back then and when this album came out it was so cool to pick out alot of familiar synth sounds. The 90’s Roland groovebox’s have such a unique sound my band uses an MC 505 still!
The Cannibal album from Static X has some incredible bangers. I wholeheartedly recommend it! Long live evil disco
I remember buying this album when it came out and it still gets heavy rotation. Several years later I was lucky enough to work on the road on tour with Static-X and see them preform almost every night. Stem/Sweat Of The Bud is my favorite off this album too. Subscribed 🤘🏻

One of the heaviest albums of the 90s for me (and there was certainly no shortage of them). Sounds relatively simplistic on the surface, but has layers upon layers when you really listen. Wayne Static’s vocals have a really unhinged quality to them on this one. Their follow up albums didn’t really do much for me, but Wisconsin Death Trip always has a special place in my heart.
You put it perfectly, there's kind of a simplistic/repetitive-ness to this album surface level but they use a lot of layering and changeups with the sound that make it a lot more complex than it appears.

first time listening to Static X...from the first track I was immediately thinking the same thing, White Zombie...the funk, the electronica in the background, the vocal delivery, and even the voice samples, but then things took a very different turn at Stem, which sounded like a heavy Portishead-like track...the second half of the album sounded so different to the first, I'm still not sure what to make of them
YES, this was exactly my thoughts on this album too! I don't think I mentioned it in my reaction but Stem is definitely a change of tone, the album takes on a more electronic, sorta futuristic sound. I find it interesting too that all of my favorite tracks are from the second half (stem, sweat of the bud, wisconsin death trip, and the trance is the motion). I guess I have a bias toward the more drawn out, atmospheric side of their music.

WoW! Never expected this honestly. Static-X is one of my favorite bands for sure. This album through Start A War are classics for me. The passing of Wayne probably hit me harder than any other musician in my life. They put out a new album after many years with old recorded vocals from him and the singer of the band DOPE doing other parts and it is amazing. A true return to form despite him being gone. Personally I think their 3rd album, Shadow Zone, is their Magnum Opus. Highly recommend getting to that one at least as they mixed the industrial and heavy perfectly with more melodic. The song writing just went to another level. Nobody did it like Static-X. Truly a unique band.
I really enjoyed this album, definitely more industrial sounding than I was expecting but for me personally that's a good thing! And I love the ambient, cinematic stuff they add to it too. I'll definitely have to give the rest of their discography a listen now.
Considering you're reacting to literally my entire library from my teenage years, you might as well give Incubus a shot. Fungus Amongus is another of those "fun" albums to listen to, kinda like Wisconsin Death Trip or SOAD's self-titled.

@@mollyesanborn Their first 3 albums are tremendous. Their new album "Project Regeneration" is pretty great. They used Wayne's left over recorded vocals and wrote a new album with them and it turned out great. RIP Wayne.
I agree with you - but I also say that Shadow Zone is one of the most underrated albums ever written. It's incredibly good music; the arrangements were much more laser-focused, less "trance" styling than previous work, the production was even more consistent...it was different Static-X, but it was the best representation of what it could've been done at that time in music. Incredibly underrated in my opinion. It's also the most accessible, I would say.

Great review. I really love the album, but it did come out when I was in college. They would play "Trance is the Motion" at their early club shows (I think Stem as well). Static-X live was interesting because of the mix of the heavy industrial stuff and then the dancy melodic stuff. If you keep going down the Static-X rabbit hole, you will see more "Ostego" songs. Ostego is a town in Michigan. The story goes that Wayne had a fake ID and he was "Dean from Ostego".

It’s a small town with a “sister” city a few miles away (Plainwell) and both towns are roughly equidistant between Kalamazoo & Grand Rapids in West Michigan.
Wayne Static spent a lot of his teenhood in that area as he grew up along the lakeshore in Shelby (along the US-31 corridor with towns like New Era, Montague, Whitehall, Pentwater, etc.) not much to do in those towns after dark for a college-aged kid or high schooler. So many of those kids would go to Muskegon or a bigger city such as Grand Rapids to shoot pool or hang out.
Wayne would eventually move to Chicago in the mid 1980’s to form a band called Deep Blue Dream with a pre-Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan. Unlike Corgan who stayed in Chicago and found success with the Pumpkins, Wayne’s band ended up moving to Los Angeles and after a couple of changes, the band “Static” was formed in the mid-90’s and played all around LA. There are a couple of videos from that era floating around of gigs under the Static name. The X part came later as they signed to a major label to record Wisconsin Death Trip as I believe there was already a band called Static so, they had to change the name.
The title Wisconsin Death Trip is named after a 1973 book by the same name. The author’s name escapes me at the moment, but I actually had the book for a while when I was younger.

They were a fun band, we used to joke they were the perfect soundtrack to acid and Slim Jim's lol. Glad you enjoyed the album and yeah, in retrospect the guitar tones and distortion has a bit of Zombie to them. I saw them live with Soulfly and their set was one wall of distortion but Wayne's voice sounded great even if every song sounded exactly the same lol.

I love these guys early albums, so entertaining...and still to this day their sound is quite unique in its simplicity. Favs on this are Love Dump & The Trance is the Motion. Their second album, Machine, is a definite listen and maybe their third, Shadow Zone, but by Shadow Zone they had replaced their original guitarist who was also responsible for a lot of the electronic stuff. I never bothered with anything beyond this so others may have to recommend whether anything's worth a listen.
I saw them support Fear Factory and Korn, was an awesome lineup and they were great.
Edit: If you listen to Machine, try and get one with the original studio version of Cold. This song was on The Queen of the Damned OST and it was reworked and I think to it's detriment.

Start a War has the orginal guitarist back and to me, its a mix of WDT and Machine if you will but updated. Check it out. Dirt house, Skinny man and My Damnation are stand outs for me.

Oh man this album. I was in 7th grade when someone handed me a demo TAPE. Yes, a tape that had Push It and Bled For Days on it. I played that tape so much I wore it out. When the album finally came out on CD I bought it immediately and still listen to this day. Amazing band.
Wayne referred to his style of music as "Evil Disco", so you saying an Underworld Club would be playing it fit perfectly. 😀

Greetings. Many people, like me, showed their love for Static X after Need For Speed Underground and the song "The Only". Once you listen, you won't stop. Evil Disco is on the radar again, which is good news. As for the album. Wisconsin Death Trip is a 1973 non-fiction book by Michael Lesy, based on a collection of late 19th century photographs by Jackson County, Wisconsin, photographer Charles Van Schaick - mostly taken in the city of Black River Falls - and local news reports from the same period. It emphasizes the harsh aspects of Midwestern rural life under the pressures of crime, disease, mental illness, and urbanization. Wisconsin Death Trip is the band's very first and most successful album. Push It is the best song, according to most listeners. We are waiting for Project Regeneration part.2. Static X is one of those bands I was always indifferent to...but somehow, Push It, Bled for Days, and Love Dump nearly always find their way onto lots of my "get stuff done" playlists.

I absolutely love this album too Molly. Great review of it!!! It's really cool how they use a lot of keyboards and sampled sounds to add extra atmosphere to the songs. You should definitely check out their next album called Machine. They take that stuff to another level on that album.

A lot of it is old vocals from Wayne, and new music created around it to make songs from them, but also a few of their own new songs with the new singer, Xer0. The album is Project Regeneration, and there is expected to be a volume 2 that finishes the material they had to work with from Wayne's isolated vocals.

Random recomendation:
If you want to listen to a good mix of electronica, metal, industrial, and some occasional pop melodies, i recommend you to listen to 2016 album of Circle Of Dust called "Machines Of Our Disgrace". This album is made by just one guy called Klayton (but nowadays this solo one-man-band thing is not uncommon, because even kids now can do some ok production on their laptop), and it's basically a resurrection of his first project from late 80s/90s, after almost 18 years of hiatus (due to his old label issues, and he didn't even own the rights to his first COD albums for many years). But he's mostly known for his other projects, such as Celldweller, Scandroid, and some others.
Static X is one of my favourite bands growing up. I got Wisconsin Death Trip when it came out and was instantly hooked. My favourite Static X album is Cannibal, that one is a straight punch to the ears. Amazing!!

At some point I want to get your reaction to the first two Soulfly albums. Soulfly is like Slipknot but more funky with the grooves and tribal with the drums. I think you would love them. Plus the first two albums have guest appearances from Chino (Deftones), Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), and Corey Taylor (Slipknot).

You mentioned that Otsegolation could be in a movie soundtrack, well it was but in a videogame soundtrack called "Omega Boost" for PS1, can be heard in the main menu and in the final boss battle. Greetings from Mexico.
Oh that's cool, yeah it definitely has that cinematic quality to its sound. I can understand why it's part of a videogame soundtrack.
There's a few good tracks on this album, nostalgic stuff, I remember this album because my friend always put it on whilst playing driving games on the PlayStation, but overall it's not something I'd put on myself, even today. However live Static X were great, I saw them in '09 at a festival, the weather was amazing, they came on and I just remember the audience jumping to Pushit in unison, never seen a crowd move in such synchronicity it was amazing! I was only 4 people from the front, great times, RIP Wayne Static.
Trivia: they shared a rehersal space with the Smashing Pumkins at one time.
It's so wonderful to see someone going back to and bringing attention back to Static-X. This was one of the main industrial metal bands (Evil Disco) bands I listened to way back in high school. I got to see them at a show in Vegas (Extreme Thing) while on tour for their album Cannibal. I met the band that day for a signing, and actually got to talk to them for a bit, some of the nicest guys, Wayne seemed genuinely happy to talk to the fans, and they brought some serious energy to there performance. Just caught the first sentence in your video and wanted to comment before watching the whole thing. When Static X first hit the mainstream, their merchandise featured the slogan “Keeping Disco Evil.”, so you weren’t far off in your assessment, lol.
Also I’m going to put my three favorite tracks out there and see we if we agree. I like “Loser”, “I’m With Stupid”, and “Love Dump”.. and “Wisconsin Death Trip” gets an honorable mention.
This album is one of my favorites of all time every track on here is a hit. I was 17-18 when it came out but I still know the words to every track. I don’t even have a favorite song because it’s so hard to pick one from the album I love it

Thought I lobby for American Head Charge again lol.. As looking on spotify at numetal playlists AHC actually are more popular than I originally once thought as no-one ever suggests them, but they always have one or two tracks in the "best of" numetal playlists. Also for those that haven't yet discovered them you would be introducing them to a somewhat forgotten gem, at the time of their debute War of Art they were just as big as Mudvayne and I would even argue that their debute is "better" than LD50. They have two albums that are worth your attention, first War of Art (as I've previously mentioned) and 'The Feeding' which I don't think Spotify has the rights too yet, so you may need to use YT or buy the CD to review/react. Anway, I enjoy these videos, they bring a lot of great memories back, and your enthusiasm is contagious, I've found myself digging out my old collection of CDs and having a headbang session lol it really was an amazing era of music, so yeah thanks!

I've seen Static-X once with Wayne. And once with Xer0 (believed to be Edsel Dope). They always put on an amazing show!
They will be on tour this year with Powerman 5000, mudvayne, and Rob Zombie. Go see them! It may not be Wayne anymore. But they're still awesome! 🤘

Loved your review of this album! I know static x used a Marshall mg100hdfx live. It was like one of the cheapest amps. Anyways would you be able to do a review on the band Death from above 1979 that would be awesome 😎

I would definitely recommend checking out the other albums. They pair pretty well with fear factory and even did a track together called burning inside. You're killing it
