In this detailed video I look at all areas of the original RX-100 camera, with it's 1" sensor, 28-100mm lens, in a very compact well made metal body.
This review includes many areas of information for potential buyers, including a body tour, image quality tests/low light, lens test, video samples, menus/operation, as well as highlighting some of the stronger and weaker points of this camera.
Many years after it's release, the Sony RX100 series is quite affordable if you go for the RX100 I and II models, they are good value on the used market. But there are areas to look out for and some potential drawbacks too. Is the RX100 a bargain premium compact, even today many years after it's release?
These videos are very time consuming to make and I do so to help people find what gear that might work for them, even older items which can often be of interest.

Nice look Mr B, unfortunately I don't know much about cameras but I really should pick one up
Thanks for dropping in hoping to do other items too, but for now this is where the interest seems to be. Everyone is away on holiday in China, working on my own videos for the time being!
@@MrBazReviews that's awesome Mr B stay busy, I try to support you no matter what the video content is ❤️🙏
Lol "amazing coating" ;) love it. Great review, truthful and spot on, you're on a roll lately man! I never took to the RX 100 series, much prefer the Panasonic ZS100, pretty much a perfect pocket camera and includes a built in EVF that you don't have to pop up. I put a bit of grip tape on the front crease on it and never wanted another compact again. Maybe have a look at that one next!
Yup the AR coating, Easter Egg had to be done ;-D
Sums it up well, whoever made that AR coating is the same person who invented the chocolate oven🤯
Sensor is good, it deserves a better thought out and more ergonomic body
L
Great, Thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Had one of these a few years ago but upgraded to a M3 when Sony had a great cash back deal on. The M3 has a few nice upgrades and can also be had for reasonable price. It is a tough market for this type of camera now that phone cameras are so good.
They still sell the MK 3 new I think, this one is fairly cheap used, hence I thought it might be useful to look at it. The M3 lens is better. For some reason there is a compact/older camera resurgence lately. That Fuji X10 I reviewed a while back costs twice what I paid new for it! Seems to be some interest in older and CCD cameras from people - perhaps bucking the phone trend? I think most people will be happy with a phone, but enthusiasts seem to still like cameras.
I think Gen Z like the retro kitsch of the really early/bad digicams. The RX100 probably produces photos which are too good to qualify. 😀
@@leighhaynes Could be right maybe Hello Kitty camera review coming up! lol

Nice video, subscribed !
I copped one at 85€ from a charity sell last november (yup i'm a lucky guy for camera things 😅), only things missing is a viewfinder.
But: i glued a cold shoe from a defect Zorki SLR between the 2 mic holes, and bought a (lefty...yeah...lucky guy i told you 😅) KMZ turret viewfinder to snag in, which allows the flash to pop, and does not hinder the select wheel from turning.
Direct sunlight isn't a problem anymore...
...and with the grip...now it's a Monster.
The RX100 Mark1.5 (and it is sexy AF!!)
Interesting, yes I do miss the viewfinder your solution is novel! You can find some around at low prices, I think that's part of the appeal with this model, yes later ones added more - but they're quite a lot more cost wise. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!
Anyone know if you can attach a viewfinder to this model? I am new to photography and would really like to have the experience the viewfinder provides :)
Can't be done as there is no hot shoe, unless you stick something on the top plate. The Mk II has a hot shoe that might be a better bet, later ones have an EVF
i have both mk1 and m7 and the much lighter mk1 still is handy
I still find it useful, I don't mind the lens range for what I use it for
theres defo been a renaissance for the 1st rx100, i get it as ive kept mine for years but may have to shot it as its prob peaked ;)
We have just ordered one. We love our Alphas and know the menus. We wanted a pocket camera to save us lugging around bodies and lenses all the time. Hopefully this is the solution for us. We want to shoot more black and white images.
It's quite good (better then you might think) for image quality, though it's not the most comfortable camera to hold and use, it is small and would work well for travelling light.
Im really new to photography, i want to buy one , i dont know if this is the best for a beginner, i wanna keep it for me , vlogs and making memories, what do you thinkv
If you want an affordable compact that isn't crazy expensive, it's worth looking at. For general use it's still very decent photo and video. Comes down to if that small size matters, if it does then give it a try
@@MrBazReviews which one is better the canon g7x or sony rx 100
@@InsomniacInstincts The Canon has a wider faster lens, but overall the Sony seems to provide sharper images, that's my own take. The Mk I is also cheaper to buy from what I see on the used market.
Can we change language on mark 1? I have the Japanese variant want to change it to English
With Sony (applies to other camera models too from them), you are stuck with Japanese language on the camera, I'm not sure if there is a way to change it, I don't think there is.
@@MrBazReviews There's an open source framework to access hidden features locked away on them, with one of the changes being unlocking languages on foreign models. This guy has a video on how to access these features th-cam.com/video/_cWjNHz6AR8/w-d-xo.html
Although this is only compatible with a selection of cameras from a list provided!
all that without showing it has a flippy screen?
The thing is the RX100 Mk I does not have a tilting LCD. The RX100 Mk II does
I really wouldn't miss something that obvious considering the time spent making the video.
