Today's video is a reaction/analysis of Hwasa's (화사) MV 'I'm a 빛' from her latest mini album 'Guilty Pleasure'. We'll be diving into a little bit of music/composition, vocal technique and performance attributes with a side of barely contained fan-girling.

😂 while the idea that the other members shipped her in a box is the best theory I’ve heard so far lol, this is actually an alternate ending to Maria. In Maria she chose good in the end. I’m a 빛 is when she chooses 😈 The box scene is like a rebirth. that’s why she looks like the box birthed her 😂

@@jvoxfox and if you come to think about it, the hwasa in purple dress symbolizes her mental nuances, cause in Maria there was a scene where she was sit in the same chair as in the ending, but holding a scissor against her wristles.
So we got her depressed/cured by mamamoo in Maria, and her savage side in I'm a b.
Yes, it is a word play. She wrote this while under stress making her new album (according to her in an interview with Jessi), and she decided she needed to be a b*tch sometimes in order to survive the process. So, "I'm a shining light" and "I'm a b*tch" are both valid :)

This song is the continuation from Maria. In Maria, Hwasa tells a story of what happen if she chooses to be good. In I'm a B, is a story of what happen if she chooses the evil. If you watch the teaser of the song, there is a clip ending where Hwasa sit on the couch holding a scissor but her Mamamoo members didn't come out from the door behind. You should watch the teaser as well, you might get some idea of what storyline Hwasa wants to deliver.
the Korean word for light can sound like the english word for bitch, so a little bit of wordplay for you, on her shirt it says excuse you I'm a bitch. Snakes represent re-birth.
Just realised that she used the word bitch in Twit.
The initial scene can be compared to a birth, plus Hwasa has the same dress used in Maria (as you already noticed), connecting the two mvs and themes as Maria was like a rebirth to her and the water (another recurring theme) represents life.
Basically this mv is an alternative end for Maria mv, here Hwasa embraces her bad side, "If I don't became a bit*h I can't survive" is what Hwasa thought while working on new music and it's the concept of the title track.
When she opens the door the scene is like watching inside that box she came out but as you can see everything is black outside instead inside the box is bright because Hwasa bacame the light who swallowed the darkness.
As we will see later there are 2 Hwasa, one watching inside the box and one actually inside of it “there’s no light without shadow” as Hwasa said.
The whole mv and lyrics are playing with dark and bright, white and black, you can clearly see it in this part “life is so incredible. Even if I go crazy my sin is beautiful” then “life is now so terrible I can’t cry even if I smile”.
Her sin is beautiful because she’s doing what she loves, music, but she feels like she’s sinning because she’s ‘mistreating’ herself and the people she loves.
This is her guilty pleasure: pushing herself beyond her limits.
We can spot flowers in the whole mv, the pictures in the blue room, she’s wrapped under plastic like a flower in a bouquet and in the room with white furnitures, the only touch of color are the flowers…Hwasa loves flowers and her symbol is a flower.
Talking about this room, in Maria mv Hwasa wearing a sort of straitjacket was monitored in a white tiles room, she was cornered by pencils (comments) pointing at her…now she’s free standing bold on those white tiles furnitures, this time she has a pencil in her hand and she’s completing a crossword with ‘Hwasa’ and ‘Crazy’. Basically she’s saying I’m crazy, so what? Again with the lyrics ‘In a word I’m out of my mind so far I’m alive’ like she has to go crazy working on music to really live.
In the ending scene there is another recurring theme since Maria, the snake, another symbol of rebirth, transformation. Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. Of course that scene is hinting to another mv she will release for another track from Guilty Pleasure album or connect to her next comeback. Hwasa co-wrote and co-composed 2 out of 3 tracks and this is the first time she teams up with non-Korean music producers.
With this single album she became the 1st soloist of 2021 to enter on Billboard world digital song sales chart with 2 songs in top10. 'I' a B' topped iTunes in 19 countries and QQ music chart in China.
Probably not the best song to show her vocal abilities but your reaction was really interesting, I can't wait to check out your thoughts on FOMO and Bless U

Hwasa is chill. 90% of MMMTV is actually "Where the hell is Hwasa?"(the other 10% is "Where the hell is Solar?") because she tends to be inert when not working. 😂
Hwa Sa said during her Online Fan Greeting (that was totally worth the $10), she said in "I'm a B*tch" is like her saying, "excuse me, I'm a bitch", or "sorry if I'm a bitch", (but not really sorry at all), if someone thinks she is a bitch because she is a professional and is great at her job, or being so professional that she will keep working hard, and practicing, over and over. Also, in an article for kpopherald she said that she also calls herself bitch with friends all the time in a playful way. (Like a lot of women I know, I do).
She said that she had lot struggles this year and she said that, "Unless I become a real bitch, I can't survive here." when she was on Jessi's Showterview. (link below)
She also said on Blank Talk (link below) that she fought all the way to the end to try and keep it Bitch, but her CEO wouldn't let her keep it, so it was changed it to Bich. I think it's probably so she didn't have to have a +18 tag on her song title.

I absolutely love your reactions because you really go into details about so many things. Like I love how even though you focus on vocals, instrumentals, and musicality, you also mentioned stuff about the choreography. Keep up the amazing work.
I have a certain viewpoint on the opening of the video. As we know, Hwasa is the youngest member of Mamamoo but she gets more hate than any of the rest, for various reasons. Just one of those reasons is that South Korea is still a very conservative country but Hwasa is a very outgoing, strong, progressive personality.
The powers-that-be over there try to stuff her into a box. No, no, no, she is NOT having that! She would drown/ suffocate in other people's crap (during the MV for Maria, she is seen contemplating self-harm with a pair of scissors. She actually thought about it, which is sad. But she is stronger and smarter than that). So she breaks out of their box on her own, she WILL NOT be contained!
For her independence, she is called a bitch; totally undeserved of course but any independent woman is sneered at and called all sorts of things by bigoted men in charge (and even by some other women, which is THE MOST strange thing about that!), which is absolute garbage. NOBODY deserves this kind of treatment simply because they exist and want to be themselves.
Check out the print on her crop-top during the bathroom mirror scene; those are the lyrics.
One must remember that Hwasa is this awesome lady's stage name; she chose to be called that for her public persona. The word (or words) that make up the stage name means 'shining bright' (or something near that). The Korean word that we English-speakers hear as 'bitch' in this song actually also means 'light' in Korean, as you had translated. So this is even more word play after the song Maria, which is her baptismal name. Then of course there is the name she was born under.
It's a nice little circular argument which could be a very neat way to describe the very messy struggle that every human has in our everyday lives. We constantly try to figure out what we feel emotionally at a given time or we try to win the fight of good-versus-evil, or we struggle against other people who try to bring us down; all of this happening simultaneously. The entire struggle is right there and I think Hwasa did this entire idea justice with these two songs. The word play is AMAZING.
Hwasa herself is MADE of art.

the kayagum is a korean tradicional instrument so amazing! ma fav dancebreak😍
the instrument is actually a geomungo (거문고). Like the gayageum (가야금) it is a zither type instrument, but it has less strings and it is played by hitting the strings with a wooden stick, not plucked like the gayageum.

You're the first and maybe the only one wonderring if Moonbyul, Solar and Wheeinie have put Hwasa in a box and threw her into the sea 🤣🤣🤣 This is more like a version of how a fierce but laidback Hwasa survives alone without the others. Also, she said that she wants to make more refreshing music after the heavy Maria, so here it is.
To build off her writing talent. DKDKTV broke down the background of the word play in Maria. There are three ways of using the word Maria when repeated. Subtle. The same way Bitch is used here. Has Light and attitude.

Nice observations about how she varies her technique from spoken to weighty to a belt to aspirated and how that carries the interest and momentum of the song more than the instrumental arrangement. I expected a build to something more high energy or a surprise twist as a finale so the ending felt kinda flat and was a bit of a let down but it's still a terrific song.
I thought it was a gayageum too but someone else correctly identified it as a geomungo. A gayageum is longer and has 12 or more strings, whereas this geomungo (bass zither) has 6 strings.
The idea of the other girls getting fed up with My Way Hyejin and shipping her off in a box is funny as hell but that's definitely not the concept here. I'm a B is the road not taken in Maria. One of the teasers shows the final scene in Maria where the girls come in but instead of looking over her right shoulder to see the other members she looks over her left shoulder in surprise and shock and the girls aren't there.
Your light/bitch duality comments get at the heart of the song. She's always herself but whether you perceive her as a shining light of confidence and empowerment or a bad bitch depends on you. The mirror scenes with the reversed graffiti imply that whichever way you think about her she reflects back at you. Reminds me of the line in Hip when she asks the haters why they're spitting in their own faces. And since she's "that bitch" if you hate her she likely to own what you say about her and shove it in your face, like how she responded to the controversy about her "too sexy" red outfit at the 2018 MAMA award show by showing up at their next award show performance wearing black lingerie. That's our girl.
Loved the outro edit. Having babes in bras was perhaps intended as a bitchy FU to her haters about the "can't win no matter what I do" dual airport fashion controversies over wearing just a bra (tho it wasn't really a bra) vs not wearing a bra.

You’re definitely hearing “b*tch” lol. 빛/light in Korean is pronounced like the English word “beat” but if you sound out each individual Korean character you get ㅂ - B, ㅣ - I, ㅊ - ch/tch. Hwasa is using a play in words. She’s intentionally pronouncing it like that.
Also I did see someone theorize that the snakes can be a representation of the 7 deadly sins, where the color of each snake represents a sin.

Hwasa delivered though when does Mamamoo not deliver? I am guessing you figured out Hwasa is referring to both the korean meaning and the english phonetic word as well. The other two songs on this mini album are just as good. Moonbyul has said a comeback is coming soon, so if this is what RBW did with Hwasa, I cant wait to see what Moonbyul does. Wheein is doing a christmas song duet with her new company. Solar(my bias) has said nothing but we know she is doing a comback.
