Boring Desert Battles? Make Your Terrain Wide AND Tall!

- Deserts and dunes seem like they would go hand in hand, but how can we introduce decent elevation without worrying about descending minis? These small mesas and hoodoos will certainly take your desert terrain to new heights by mixing the benefits of scatter terrain (where you can just quickly chuck these bad boys down) and modular terrain (magnets allow you to stack 'em high and make arches without worrying about them falling over!).
This terrain is super forgiving as well since your foam cuts don't have to be exact at all. Somewhat beginner-friendly!

The washers you refer to are "Fender" washers, they have the smaller hole. I use them for bases for weight and for transport.

Sands down the best desert terrain I've seen. Nice work, Dune! (All these puns make me both ill and happy at the same time.😬) FYI "Fender" washers are the ones with the smaller holes. Also, I find melting the spaces for the washers, magnets, pennies, etc with a hotwire 'pencil' (not sure what the attachment is called) easier than trying to carve out the space. YMMV. Cheers.

As always, an awesome video and craft! The metal disc was a great idea. Is a metal piece easy to get and safe to use and manipulate.
Thank you! And yes I didn't do anything to alter the washers--they are easy and safe to use. You can get them at your local hardware store. Another viewer mentioned they are called "Fender" washers!

You know, it'd be really cool to see this sort of thing done with magnetic trees and red clay (and perhaps some sparse grass?) As to emulate the red bluffs you'd see in Mississippi, or the redwood forests of California. Or even the Australian outback!
I think it'd be a nice mix up from the typical forests and hills you usually see in this hobby!
For sure adding this to the list of future projects! Mayhaps a desert pt 3 because I do agree that there are still more elements to a desert that could be included to make it more vibrant!
Ooh, desert terrain is perpetually down quite a ways on my to-do list, despite how useful it'd be for one of the games I'm running. This is inspiring me to bump it up quite a few spots after I finish one of my current projects...
The eternal struggle of picking which project gets the top spot on a creator's to-do list 😂 I'm honoured if I can even bump something up one spot!
I think the white areas are caused by the grout being somewhat hydrophobic, it's probably repelling the top layer of paint off it on the first pass. I quick spritz of IPA over the grout might break the surface tension of the dry grout, and allow your paint to stay in place. Just a theory... I've found grout to be a bit finicky at times in my own work.
Ah okay thank you for the insight! I have tried spritzing with alcohol on my desert boards, but I didn't try using it after or amidst painting. I'll keep it in mind for future attempts.
look into getting some Forstner Drill Bits, used for cutting precise, flat-bottomed holes in wood. Should be able to use them by hand if only cutting foam.

Great as usual! Any way you could link the magnets you use? I've tried a few different neodymium magnets and so far they haven't really been strong enough.
I honestly buy mine off of ebay from different suppliers! But for sure placement is important to have as thin of material and distance between the magnets as possible. Also look for N52 rather than N35 or anything lower, as N52 is rated as the highest for magnetism. RP Archive also has links to suppliers through his videos. As a suggestion, if you have the option, use acrylic inks rather than paints for the pseudo leopard spotting technique. The end result tends to be better and it mixes far better with water
Ah that totally makes sense. I'll give it a shot next time around!
@@raecheldoes Just remember that the inks tend to have a higher percentage of pigment in them when you thin it out so you don't need as much. And despite the bottles costing a bit more, they last a LOT longer because of it.

Oh that is a possibility! I don't know how hot they would need to be heated or how I might accurately place them, but maybe an oven and tongs/pliers could do the trick...
Question, how do you storage all of this? Can you put terrain atop other terrain pieces inside a desk?
These desert pieces are pretty simple to store because yes they do stack well into a draw or box etc. RP Archive actually has a really great video on creating home-made storage for terrain if you're interested!

Would it work to use sheet sheetmetal on the top so that the magnets would work no matter where you place them ? And if you have thought of this is there any reasons why it would be a bad idea to do this ?
That is definitely an option! And I think RP Archive actually does this with his tiles using ferrous sheets of some kind. I personally don't have access to a reasonably priced supplier, so the washers was a great cheap alternative, but I am definitely considering ferrous sheets for future projects.
@raecheldoes ok so it's mainly a price issue 😊 I haven't looked into what they would be here but I know many ppl use them to line their miniatyr carriers if they have their minis magnetized 😊

I've made similar terrain before and I like to use wooden skewers sunk in between the layers to bond them even tighter together, though it may be unnecessary.
Yes! I've considered this as well but I'm too deep in the magnet game now haha. Wooden skewers is definitely a great option though.

RP Archive would be the authority on this! I think he's got some connections and discounts for magnets in different countries if that's helpful! You can find it on his website or likely in the descriptions of his videos.

if you just paint the washer that goes between the 2 South Magnetized pieces the same as the rest of the terrain it'll not even be noticeable i bet.
That would absolutely be the thing to do!
So 5 cent nickels are made out of nickel which is magnetic I don't know how much your washers cost. Alternatively you can pick you magnetic white boards from the dollar store and cut or punch circles or strips out of the metal sheet.
