    Recently bought the Nomad 5mm trussrod key for my new 000 Jnr - perfect fit and the handle gives you that bit of extra control. After the guitar had settled in after transport and a longer-than expected layover in a cold warehouse, fretbuzz started at the nut. The tiniest of lefty loosies and it's spot on. The 5mm size of the key gives you real confidence. Such a simple thing - but so useful.

    Hello! I wonder if you have a similar sign for a classical guitar , which is shown at the fourteenth minute of the fifty-third second of this video for setting the height of the strings above the twelfth fret ?

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For your classical guitar it would be 1.20 at the bass side and 1.00 on the treble side.
      (120 thousands bass and 100 thousands treble)

      @user-oo2wf7cf6h 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazing ! You have guessed the action of the classical guitar, which I like . The only thing that I don't like with such a height of the strings above the 12th fret on my classical guitar is that the 2nd string is pressed on the 7th , 9th frets , in short , in this area it buzzes for some reason I think It beats about the 12th dash of the 14th frets .

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being one string only that is buzzing in a certain area could be a few things. The nut slot is too low on that string, There is uneven frets in that area that seem to effect one string only or it can be a bad string if all others are playing clean especially the high E.
      You should follow the KISS method and all steps to fully determine your setup and any special needs from there.
      You can email our guitar tech for more information specific to you. tech@musicnomad.com

    When you measure the action, do you fret the strings right at the fret metal(metal between fret 1 and 2) or do you fret normally like you are playing and note for example? Or does it even matter?

    My new Martin D28 has the factory setup with mediums. It feels like I gotta use a death grip to fret it cleanly. Is that normal for the factory setup? I wanna keep medium gauge strings but I really need it to fret easier. I’ve never had a acoustic guitar with a pro setup before. I just play how they come but my D28 just feels really stiff. If they capo the first fret it feels much better. I play mostly cowboy chords and carter style bluegrass

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be a couple things, but it sounds like your nut slots may be too high, with that being said we recommend to go through the entire KISS setup flow to see where your guitar may need some adjustments for your playing style. • @JohnnyRebKy

      @@MusicNomadCare thank you and I think your right. It’s so stiff feeling that the capo can barely put enough pressure to fret the strings down and play cleanly so it must be the nut height. Not really what i expect from such a expensive guitar. But thanks again

      Our measurements are based off the fixed point at the first fret so it does not affect the gap if the pick at the first fret. since the nut heights haven't been address yet it is not a valid reference point.

    Good day Music nomad. I have a question regarding a classical guitar. On your Nut height gauge, it shows that the height for the Low E and G strings is 0.020, the A and B strings is 0.018 and the D and High E is 0.016. Why are the strings' heights in that ratio? Also what will the recommended action be for a classical guitar at the 12th fret? My classical guitar don't have a truss rod, it is an old Cort AC15 but in a very good condition with beautiful sound. I want to replace the plastic nut and saddle with tusq and then do a proper setup. Thank you for all these videos, it is by far the most informative videos I have seen.

      Our Collaboration with Master Guitar Tech Geoff Luttrell and his 20+ years, two high volume guitar shops setting up 10,000 plus guitars, teaching 100's of students in his setup workshops, in house Plek experience, plus we asked a handful of other top repair shops the most common setup measurements and this was the unanimous measurements for a a great sounding and playing guitar. For your classical guitar it would be 1.20 at the bass side and 1.00 on the treble side.

    • @rudolfprinsloo3299
      @rudolfprinsloo3299 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MusicNomadCare Thank you for the reply. I was actually just curious to know why on a classical guitar the Low E and G, A and B, High E and D were the same hight and not like an acoustic and electric guitar where the Low E and A, D and G, B and high E are the same hight. I was just wondering what is the specific reason behind that but thanks anyway.

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The string gauges on a classical guitar are different than a steel string or electric guitar. The string gauges for a steel string and electric guitar move down in size from the low E to the high E incrementally. On a classical guitar the string sizes do not move down incrementally because of the gauges needed to accommodate the 3 wound bass strings and 3 clear treble strings for a nylon string guitar (classical guitar). On a classical guitar the wound low E and plain G use the same gauge, the wound A and plain B use the same gauge and the wound D and plain high E use then same gauge because the size of the clear treble strings needs to be about the size of the related wound bass strings for tone and volume. These are labeled on the nut height gauge to make this task simple for a classical guitar setup.

    • @rudolfprinsloo3299
      @rudolfprinsloo3299 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MusicNomadCare Thank you very much. That makes perfect sense. As I am new to classical guitars, I never looked at the actual string gauges, only the tension. I use D'Addario EJ45 Normal Tension strings on my guitar. I went and look on the back of the package and then saw the string gauges is given on there. I actually feel stupid for not seeing it before. So it makes sense now that the height is set to allow each string to oscillate freely without buzzing according to each string gauge. Absolutely brilliant stuff, thank you again.

  • @garyvanremortel5218

    Capo at the first fret. Fret E2 at 12th fret and adjust neck relief to just allow the string to ring. Leave the capo at the first fret. Check at 12th fret and shave saddle to get .070" lowE .060" HiE. Use a digital height gauge to measure and note string heights at Fret 2. Remove capo and file nut slots to achieve the same string heights at Fret 1 as noted. Done.

  • @That.Guy.
    @That.Guy. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    When measuring the action why do you fret the first fret? Shouldnt it be open? I cant find any instructions where anyone else does this

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You use the pick capo to hold the E strings down at the first fret because the first fret is a fixed reference point for making the truss rod adjustment and string height adjustment. The measurements labeled on the gauges are based off the fixed-point reference of the first fret. Holding down the string at the first fret with the Pick Capo allows you to make an accurate adjustment following the KISS methods linear flow. In the flow you have not yet addressed your nut slot height which makes it a nonvalid reference point. Adjusting the nut slot height is the last step in the playability part of the setup. Following the KISS linear flow allows you to setup your guitar to play and sound great without having to go back and repeat steps.

    • @That.Guy.
      @That.Guy. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MusicNomadCare so what you’re saying is only use the capo for measuring neck relief not when measuring action? I thought in the video you were measuring the action height before adjusting the saddle

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      no you use the pick capo during the truss rod step and for measuring action (string height). During both steps you hold down the string at the first fret with the Pick Capo which allows you to make an accurate adjustment following the KISS methods linear flow.
