Loved this RSD review, one of your best and superbly informitive posts yet!. Can you mention on your next post what viewers think about removing shrink wrap - To keep wrapped or un-wrap, does unwrapping reduce the LP's raritie and value or not?.
Good channel - I applaud your detail - love a bit of Reg - my parents played him all the time - and I’ve acquired a full run of his DJM uk’s on red translucent which sound beautiful- I think Funeral for a friend is one of the best openers of any album ever 🎉
Another great video. I have the 17-11-70+. It would have been nice if they released this with the actual running order of the songs. All they did was keep record one the same as the original and gave the extra tracks on record 2. Nonetheless it was awesome to finally hear ALL the songs from the radio broadcast. I also have the Moscow album from RSD. Absolute killer vocals and piano work by Elton. Saw this tour in North America with just him and Ray Cooper. Would have been great if they released a 3 vinyl version of the concert which would have included nearly all but 2-3 songs.
I agree. The 2LP "17-11-70" should've been remixed and sequenced. You got to see EJ and RC on the "Back in the USSA" tour?? Lucky!! As I understand it, the setlist was longer than in Russia and included a piano-tambourine version of "Mama Can't Buy You Love". I have a boot of that from the Boston show. Those "Single Man with Ray Cooper" shows were amazing.
Yes back in 79 at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia. He was playing smaller venues on that tour. I have the program and used to write down the songs from his concerts I attended, but don't have a set list for that show.
I bought most of Elton's RSD releases...except THE THOM BELL SESSIONS because I already have the original cardboard 1979 Canada release. I also didn't get the RSD GOOD MORNING TO THE NIGHT because I have the original with a limited edition numbered 12" print. I passed up on the ELTON JOHN RSD because I had just purchased the album about about year earlier plus I had the CD deluxe edition issue with the many bonus tracks. I have everything from REGIMENTAL SGT ZIPPO onwards. REGIMENTAL SGT ZIPPO, by the way, seems to have been a highly sought after release: it charted "very" well in the UK's official charts upon release indicating big sales. I was hoping that LIVE IN MOSCOW 1979 would have had a 2nd RSD release the following year capturing the rest of the concert. I am really looking forward to a major MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER-like extensive box set for CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY which I would be surprised to see as an RSD release next year. A large multi-disc box might be odd for RSD and could appear at another date in 2025. Maybe a picture disc for CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY would be cool as an RSD release in 2025. I am most looking forward to see what the BLUE MOVES anniversary (box?) release might be: lots of outtakes from 1975 and will we ever see a BLACK MOVES release - assuming anyone remembers which songs were to be included. Thanks for sharing your EJ RSD releases! The hysteria of RSD has propelled the excitement of buying vinyl albums to higher & higher levels. It has become an "event."
And oddly enough, the Canadian 1979 12" Bell EP is my best sounding copy, of all the Rocket and MCA copies I have. It was pressed by Precision R&T, who did not normally make great-sounding Elton discs. I'm hoping for a super-deluxe "Captain Fantastic". I'd be surprised if they didn't do something for CF's 50th. As for "Blue Moves", I'd be surprised if we got anything. Maybe a blue vinyl edition? I'm surprised that Universal has never released "Empty Sky" in mono for RSD. If "Zippo" did so well, would a mono reissue of ES not do similarly well?
Super happy to come across this channel! My dad passed away when I was a senior in high school and was a huge Elton John fan as am I now. I sold one years ago that I’ve been struggling to find maybe you could help. It was a bootleg on splattered vinyl of rock of the westies with the collectors edition stamp. Thank you!
Sounds like that was "West of the Rockies". It was a bootleg from 1976. Had splatter/speckled vinyl. Very sought after and goes for a lot of $$$ on the collector's market.
@@stevenmoormann3644 Sorry... it was not released in 1976 but in 1977, apparently. And there were "green splash" and "red splash" pressings, and if I recall "blue splash" pressings too. The red and the green have separate entries on Discogs. I've seen blue splash copies on eBay. I'm not good at determining value, unfortunately. I've seen copies of that one in VG+ condition *list* for $100-$150 on online collectors' marketplaces. Whether anyone pays that much, I don't know. Either way, that's the highest I've seen the O/G pressing of a classic '70s Elton boot list for. Depending on scarcity, they usually list for about $40-$60, depending on condition.

Thanks so much, this is great information!! RSD 2025 : yes please to Captain Fantastic! I really enjoy Rock of The Westies, but I’m happy with an original version of that. I think Captain Fantastic would be a really popular release. I have some of these - 17.11.70+, Moscow, Zippo and Caribou. I’m not sure how much I value the second LP, apart from 17.11.70, so I’m ok at having missed the others. I think I can still get Thom Bell though - that would be great to get on vinyl and I think is still available. I have an original Don’t Shoot Me which sounds amazing, so don’t feel the need to upgrade that. I would like to get a vinyl copy of the Elton John album - would you recommend seeking out an original DJM (I’m in the UK) or one of these recent rereleases (RSD, Gold, etc)? I suppose thinking mostly about sound quality and the long intro to Sixty Years On which I think I heard your mention in one of your other videos. Incidentally I did pick up a copy of Are You Ready for love on 12” pink vinyl in a clear plastic sleeve when it was rereleased and became a hit. I think that’s become a bit rare - also quite annoying as the plastic sleeve shrinks a bit and the print on it wears off slightly, marking the vinyl. I keep them separately now… Thanks again for the content. Much appreciated!
Wow! Yes, that PVC-sleeve/pink vinyl "Are You Ready" 12" is rare and goes for hundreds these days! I keep kicking myself for not getting one back in 2003. Re: "Elton John": If you can afford it, get both. As for vintage copies, a quiet original 1970 DJM will be pricey but worth it. Choose early stamper numbers if you can. I'm told that the later Pye stampers weren't so great for that one. If not a 1970 original, then seek a 1981 UK DJM copy with yellow label and the word "Strawberry" stamped in the matrices. I'm not sure if it will include the longer version of "Sixty" but the mastering will be warm and clear. Someone told me just today that one of the EJ dot com stores now sells copies of the 2LP RSD rose vinyl "Elton John". I don't think it's been re-pressed; I think the site is just selling leftover stock. But you'd be wiser to land a sealed copy from a UK or European store, if possible. It will likely include a download card. If you buy from a US store, it likely won't have the card in it.
@@CollectingElton Thanks for all this. I think there's still a few RSD copies of Elton John available in the UK, so I'll look out for an original early stamper first, if not I'll go for an RSD. Really helpful, thank you! On eBay I'm seeing "Are You Ready For Love" PVC/pink vinyl for between £50 and £1200 - crazy! Particularly given problems with the PVC shrinking. A collector's piece I guess.
Just started watching your vids. It’s very possible that the RSD Exclusive refers to the colored vinyl. I have a couple other RSD “exclusives” which refers just to the color of the vinyl. Although last years “Don’t Shoot Me” was supposed to be an RSD First and hasn’t yet been in wide release. 2017 was my first RSD, I had a record store who would ask his regulars what they wanted him to order. This pretty much guaranteed you getting what you wanted. So I was able to get every Elton release (and other artists) from 2017 on (except for the Pnau album which at the time I didn’t quite understand). That store closed earlier this year, the owner retired. So this year I had to look elsewhere for my RSD releases. On a side note, you may have mentioned this in another video, but the Vinyl Me Please reissue of “Honky Chateau” sounds amazing. I liked what they did with “Madman” so much I had to get “Honky Chateau” as well.
You may well be correct. Since making the vid, it's occurred to me that the labels of RSD releases may not be as bound to the language (e.g. "exclusive") as I'd originally thought. And yes, that's true, even the titles that received a wider release afterwards (e.g., Complete Bell) had aspects unique to their RSD copies (colored vinyl, for example) as opposed to their later, wide release copies. The only problem with that, though, is that if the term "exclusive" (as printed on the RSD sticker) applied to those releases' unique physical characteristics, then all these Elton RSD releases would've included the word "exclusive" on their stickers. But, those whose stickers said "exclusive" have never been re-released post-RSD, and those that have been re-released post-RSD never had stickers on Record Store Day that said "exclusive". The pattern shows that "exclusive", in Elton's case at least, means exclusive.
Secret 7” in 2013 was associated with RSD, but was a separate event held at The Mother London Biscuit Building in Shoreditch, London with an exhibition called "Secret 7" on April 13-14, 2013, featuring 700 specially designed sleeves (7 titles x 100 copies, each with unique artwork sleeves). You could preview the artwork sleeves, but the record and cover artist were not revealed until purchase (£40). The art was also available to view online prior to RSD. The exhibition was available for purchase on Record Store Day, April 20, 2013. You had to queue just like regular RSD events, so the “cover” you wanted may be gone by the time your turn arrived. Proceeds went to Art Against Knives. I think they have now gone to an online auction for current Secret 7” releases (March 2024). These releases would not have appeared on the usual RSD release sheet and would not be available at any other record outlets.
Thank you for that information, Mark! Much appreciated. It sounds to me like an association, a collaboration or cooperation of some kind. So, I guess the Secret 7" "Bennie" was appropriate for the list after all.
Elton John has the self titled 2 LP in purple vinyl on his website for a good price, it doesn't have a rsd sticker on it in the photo. Wondering if I should get that one. Looks nice!
I don't think the US copies had the sticker; same with "17-11-70+". Those stickers mentioned download cards and no such cards were included in the US copies of those releases.
@@CollectingElton Thank you for your answers. I think I will order that one and also Tumbleweed Connection. I hope they don't take too long to get to NJ.
I really wanted to like the RSD release of Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player more than I did, especially considering it’s my second favorite Elton album overall, but while I’ve grown to like that cover of Hi Heel Sneakers, the rough mixes were slightly disappointing to me. Very rarely did anything stick out and I swear half the time, it amounted to not much more than Elton counting in and/or asking if the tape was rolling. Compare this to the new mix of “The Bitch is Back” on the Caribou RSD release, which brings out so much that you can’t hear in the original. I still keep going back to that and keep hearing new stuff every time. I’d really like to hear more mixes like that in future archival releases. As far as next year’s RSD release goes, I highly suspect it will be Rock of the Westies. If they do end up doing another wide release box set, it’s likely to be Captain Fantastic. I think it’s important to remember that Elton and the band generally recorded very quickly, hence why there aren’t many outtakes or alternate takes from the classic albums. Releasing these as RSD exclusives is probably their way of trying to give the albums as much love as they can with what little material is available. Westies would fit that trend, as that was another album recorded quickly. It’s my understanding that Elton and the band spent more time on Captain Fantastic than they did most albums, so there probably is more available in terms of alternate takes and/or rough mixes.
Re: "Don't Shoot Me" RSD 2LP: I agree. Those "session demos" are worth no more than one listen. I think the idea was to give an alternate, "work in progress" perspective to the album. But in the end, it's just boring. Re: RSD 2025: I hope you're right. A super-deluxe "Captain Fantastic" would be so great! A year or two ago, a set of 2-track mixdown tapes in original, 1975 Marquee Studios from the CF sessions boxes were auctioned off. They appeared to contain an alternate stereo mix of the album. It's my hope that Universal got those. Sometimes I wonder if the reason so little extra material appears to be available is because it just went missing over the years. ?

@@CollectingElton you're very organized with your collection. Impressive.
I must say that the cd issue of Live in Moscow 1979, on that card jacket is absolutely ridiculous. If I knew what I was buying, I believe I wouldn't have bought it. I hope someday I find a Japanese jewel case edition on a decent price. By the way, the back of my copy is red, not yellow as yours.
Yeah, mine's orange. :( I know several others who have the orange back variant. Obviously a printing error!
