Collecting Elton
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 ต.ค. 2023
Hello, I'm Matt, and I have been collecting Elton John's music since I was eight. I created this channel to chronicle my adventures past and present collecting Sir Elton vinyl and CDs, to share my knowledge with others, and to learn from other collectors. And, more generally, to promote and celebrate the sheer joy of collecting physical format music.
Occasionally I discuss other artists and bands I collect, e.g. Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Lana Del Rey, Smashing Pumpkins, Blondie, Billy Joel, etc.
Thanks for checking out my channel!

E048 | The 1975 Brown Vinyl “Captain Fantastic” (Limited, Signed) (Grail-mania Pt. 2)
In this episode, a collector’s dream comes true as he unboxes one of the most coveted Elton grails of all-time: the limited 1975 brown vinyl “Captain Fantastic”! MCA pressed 2,000 copies of this edition exactly fifty years ago, each hand-signed by both Elton John and Bernie Taupin in its gatefold. Of those original 2,000 brown vinyl copies, how many survive today? How many survive in shape this good? And of those, how many once belonged to John Lennon? (This one _might_ have.)

And thank you once more, “Alfonso”, for your generosity. I still can’t believe I actually have a brown vinyl “Fantastic”!
Thanks also to all viewers who tried guessing what this week's grail would be. I believe @shineonugrzydieman was the only one who guessed it correctly -- but a few of you came close!

Join me as I begin unboxing a package of gifts (from viewer and friend “Alfonso”), one of which is an Elton disc I never dreamed I’d own: the Blood Records splatter vinyl edition of “Honky Chateau”, an extremely limited UK exclusive, released in 2023 to celebrate the album’s 50th Anniversary. E046 | The 1987 DJM Reissues by Phonogram: Who Knew?
มุมมอง 67314 วันที่ผ่านมา
Hello again, folks. With the Canada Post strike over, packages that were stuck in transit for weeks are finally arriving in my mailbox - like this one, which contained three LPs I purchased from a seller in Sweden all the way back in November. The three LPs are on the DJM label but were manufactured in 1987, just after PolyGram purchased DJM. Questions I pursue: Are these true DJM issues? Or do...

THANK YOU A big, heartfelt thanks to all viewers who sent items to me this past year as gifts...

Hello folks! Some of these arrivals date from late spring of 2024 (so, they're not really "new" or even recent arrivals); but just because I didn't show them on this channel right away doesn't mean they're not interesting. I just couldn't find a place for them in any of videos from May to December. Comprising some of Elton's best-known albums from the 1970s, '80s, and 90s, this list of discs bo...

Wow this was a fantastic video. I love CF&TBDC 🌈 I never know about the brown vinyl. That’s stunning Thank you again cheers from Houston ✌️💯
Hi there. The reason there where shrink wrapped was because the majority of the album where signed at Wembley when Elton was about to play the full album for the first time. He retained some and the others where taken away shrink wrapped and hyper put in place and exported back to the USA MCA group for distribution. There are pictures of Elton signing the album at the Wembley suite and the concert program on the floor with signed copies.
Another insightful video! I have seen the brown vinyl CF advertised, but nobody ever shows it in detail and gives the background history like you do! And I must say that there is no other collector who would unsleeve the brown vinyl and turn immediately to check the dead wax for the mastering engineer and pressing facility! Congratulations on your recent acquisitions! I enjoy the background information you provide for common issues and grails alike. As we are only a few weeks away from the announcement of 2025 Record Store Day offerings, do you have any guesses or wishes for Elton offerings? The 50th anniversary of CF would be an obvious focal point, but what form would it take? Since they previously produced a “Deluxe Edition” for CF, might they skip it and offer ROTW instead, or will it a ‘lump of coal’ year for Elton fans?
That’s amazing! I really enjoy the historical aspect of these videos.
Sensational! Fantastic! ... congrats. Thnx for sharing.😀😀😀Bring on the fun.🤣🤣
Love the video....and what a grail you have there! First time I'm seeing an actual copy of that so it's as exciting for us fellow EJ collectors. I'm hoping for a 50th anniversary special issue this year (vinyl, box set, just anything)....surely it (and we all) deserve that!!
Thanks! Yes, I too am hoping for something for the CF 50th. Maybe a double LP, something like a vinyl version of the 2CD deluxe from 20 years ago. I've never heard of any demos floating around; I don't think a studio version ever existed for "Dogs in the Kitchen". Perhaps we'll get more "session demos", or whatever they were called on the HC and DSM deluxes. The "sessions demos" thing used to annoy me but now I'll take just about anything they offer, especially since CF has had few special editions over the years.
Congrats - welcome to the club. Love the humorous Phython outer packaging and great reaction, story & investigation. Great video Thanks for sharing
Thanks! Yes, Alfonso sent a package last year and put a similar image in that one too. I've saved them all.
you are so lucky i have been wanting a copy of this for years but unfortulaly i just afford to buy one and that a coming from a fan of 40+years
I never thought I'd get one, but now I have one. You never know!
Provenance aside, you indeed have a once in a lifetime grail Matthew. Your surprise reaction was contagious I assure you !!
It was a genuine surprise indeed! Unforgettable.
Another excellent video! I saw the picture of Elton signing CF in Terry O'Neill's book and wondered about it. Your video gave me chills! Do you plan to release another part of your personal EJ album ranking?
Yes, I love that photo. I’d originally mentioned it in the video but cut it for time. Notice that he’s signing the right panel of the gatefold; there are also copies of the 1975 Wembley Midsummer Music show program on the floor. I think the batch of albums he’s signing were for another purpose, but I suppose he could be signing brown vinyl copies in that photo. About the (long overdue) last “ranked albums” video: Yes, I’ve everything I need to shoot that episode; it just keeps getting delayed. The yellow vinyl “Single Man” episode’s also in line; and in the fall, I said I’d do an episode about my childhood Elton cassette collection. I found I was missing two of my cassettes though, and for a while I’d hoped to recover them; but I don’t think I’ll get them back. But I’ll go ahead and do that episode anyway - Feb or March, probably. I began working on a different “background set” (I finally got a giant Kallax unit from IKEA) a couple weeks ago, and I want the fourth and last “ranked albums” video to be my first with that new set. But the “set” is still not done, and the lighting tests have not gone well. This week I’ll spend a couple days at a (work related) conference in Toronto, which will jumble my weekend schedule, which also means that next week’s episode might end up being another “Elton Safari” (groaann…). But I’ll finish that ranked video soon.
Thank you for your detailled reply. You're right about the photographs, I didn't recognize this. Take your time with your videos - they're all something I really enjoy a lot and Look forward to. Also, you're my favourite person on TH-cam. You seem like an (slightly) older brother with tons of cool knowledge and stories to tell! Keep up the great work! ✌️
My copy purchased for £60 in 1982 includes the original letter sent to recipients inside the sleeve on MCA Headed paper , my copy was purchased from Alan Finch then the owner of Tumbleweed connection record store behind Selfridges department store in London a second hand/collectables record store , at the time he was also working for Elton as a record promoter for Rocket
Didn't AF also publish that illustrated discography paperback in 1981? I've seen his name a number of places. He must've had quite a personal collection. I didn't know about that MCA letter. I've seen a few of these brown vinyl "Fantastics" listed for sale or auction and, unless I've forgotten, none had that letter. It might've been something that most recipients didn't think was worth keeping? Guard yours with your life!
@@CollectingElton yes Alan had an amazing collection i was a regular customer of his and as i got to know him he would bring items from his collection in to show me i remember him showing me his bootleg Vinyl cop of i get a little bit Lonely fasinated by all the unreleased tracks on it , you are right he was the Author of the book the illustrated discography this was a revelation to me in the early 1980s as it was the first time i had seen all the early singles , Bluesology, from Denver the L.A etc , etc, promos, bootlegs and more and yes Alan had copies of everything for sale i had an expensive ten years or so buying from him
Always enjoy your stories, and glad you put the effort into the research side of things. I've been collecting since the 80s and still learn new things from your videos.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching.
Exciting stuff. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
This is probably the one most desired Elton album for me. CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY is my all-time favourite album so anything related is always highly desired! Hopefully Universal Records and Elton's team has something worthy for the album's 50th anniversary this year. Great expression the moment you identified the album! How do you beat this one?!!! Grail mania, indeed!
Definitely will be hard to beat! Perhaps even impossible, short of getting a lost master tape or something. I too am hoping for something interesting for the CF 50th -- and not another splatter vinyl edition.
I am so happy for you, Matthew! You and I talked about the brown vinyl issue in recent months. As you may recall, in the mid 90s I happened upon a brown copy at a record convention for $125, but it was way out of my price range. At the time, I didn't have enough in my pocket to buy it. Then, more recently, I priced it online only to find out that it was now selling for over $800. You, my friend, now have a copy in your collection, thanks to Alfonso. I am sure that this is now your most prized Elton album over all others.
It'll be difficult to beat, that's for sure! The 1968 Portuguese "Loving You" EP is still a contender but the brown vinyl "Fantastic" is in much better condition. So, I think you're right -- it's now tops. And something I forgot to mention in this episode: This copy of "CF" is the first and only item I have signed by either Elton or Bernie. I've never met either one of them and I've never sought anything signed by them. I guess by ca. 2000 the prices just went far too high for me. I have signed first editions by some of my favorite authors, though; I also have two of the Monkees' autographs (on a tour program, which I obtained in person), plus Peter Noone's (Herman of Hermits fame) autograph, which I also obtained in person.
@@CollectingElton And, you have Roger Pope and Clive Franks autographs as well.
Happy anniversary Matt! That's one cool looking disc! Perhaps it even warrants frame on wall treatment... As for the next grail. I'm guessing it's a signed Gold Diggers single?
@@mygrooviecollection1837 Thanks for the congrats. No, not a Goaldigger but that's a really good guess!
That Splatter in the UK IS VERY EXPENSIVE YOU WOULD BE LUCKY TO PICK ONE UP FOR UNDER £150
Matt, great episode and congrats on your one year anniversary. You are quite fortunate to have friends who are also benefactors! I paid $180 usd for my copy of the Blood Records HC, but I just had to have it! I will say, stay away from the recent Diamonds limited edition disc that has "diamonds" embeded it the vinyl. It is basically two lps glued together and the sound quality is horrendous. You are also fortunate that you did not order the splatter vinyl copies of EJ, TC, MAtW and DSMIAOTPP, as the TSOV site has yet to fulfill my order despite ordering and paying for them on Black Friday. TSOV has essentially stopped responding to my emails and I am so po'ed. What a way to do business. Anyway, I digress, congrats again!
Man, I'm sorry to hear you've waited so long for those. I heard about the new _Diamonds_ limited vinyl; I've not heard any good things about it. Just about everyone I know that's bought it feels ripped off. It's too bad. That's why I prefer buying vintage.
@CollectingElton update: TSOV finally responded after more than two weeks of silence and stated that "the warehouse is currently fulfilling my order and I should receive a shipping update shortly." Hopefully, my order will arrive before we hit the 2 month milestone!
Matt, another Interesting video and so pleased for you to receive the splattered pressing of Honky Chateau.....a generous gift but a worthy recipient ! I so enjoy the content you post and follow your comments on the forum as well. Loving all the Elton knowledge and the pleasure of good vinyl pressings is a joy to collectors. keep up the good work happy anniversary and I look forward to this years content. Well done its all appreciated
Thanks so much, Alan! I appreciate that a lot. Lots more good stuff comin'...
This is pretty good except try talking over less of the videos, so we can hear the music. No reissues better the orig UK DJM pressings in my opinion. Even Bernie Grundmans remasters which are good, don't better the sound of the UK DJM's.
Thanks. I had to keep the music down so that YT's content filters wouldn't flag the video for the music. I'm not monetized, so it really isn't _that_ big of an issue for now, but that could change. I agree with you re: original DJMs, in _most_ cases. There are some exceptions, I think, i.e. some pressings (e.g. later DJM-UK and some non-DJM) that at least equal the classic UK DJMs by Pye.
Great content as usual, Matt! I too, as you know from the Hoffman Forum EJ album discussion posts, am always hopeful for Elton's team to upload more videos to his TH-cam. That DVD is cool, the record is cool... Glad you got it. And my guess is the other is a Barron Knights album? Keep up the great content, sir.
Thanks @DDavis-mg9nd. Unless I missed an earlier comment, you're the first commenter to guess at what next week's grail will be (perhaps the "grailiest of all Elton grails", as I describe it -- even though "grailiest" isn't a word I don't think). But no, it's not the Barron Knights disc. A good, thoughtful guess though!
@@CollectingElton LOL I saw Knight... I thought? Written on the album sleeve? That's where my mind went. But then I wouldn't know if that's a grail necessarily or one that Lennon would possess as a "prize" from Elton. So, my answer is sorta weak... LOL
Well, I gather that you did not take my first guess seriously. Fair enough! I guess John Lennon could not have been in possession of the 2021 release of _The Lockdown Sessions_ . My next guess is far more plausible. Few people know that John Lennon was in Munich in August 1979 and joined his pal Elton at Musicland Studios where, under the pseudonym “Craig Snyder”, he played lead guitar on the smash hit “Johnny B. Goode”! Your next grail is the Limited Edition 4-LP box set of _Victim of Love_ , given to Lennon by Elton as a token of appreciation! (I’m sure that in some universe this could be true) This is my best guess, as you use the same language and have the exact same facial expression I have every time I hear this album!!
@Capt.Ego-78 No, I didn't take it seriously, lol. _Lockdown Sessions_ blue vinyl? Just like the 4LP _Victim of Love_ promo box by MCA. It exists, but who's fighting for a copy??
Do you have EJ records pressed from Amiga (German Democratic Republic)?
I think I have one 45? I can't recall which, though. I know the label though.
@@CollectingEltonI'd show one (Greatest Hits Vol. 1 with "Writing" and "Bitter Fingers" on it) to you, but I don't find your address. It's simply not shown on your profile. 😕 Could you put it in your video description, please?
@LogoKroko I added it at the very bottom of this video.
@@CollectingEltonI got it - thank you very much! I'll visit my parents at the beginning of February. The LP is there. You'll hear from me. ✌️
Fascinated to watch all your EJ related videos. Keep unboxing all thru 2025....love it!
Thanks for watching! Much appreciated. And lots more good stuff to come!
What a great release. I went with the CD edition of Honky Chateau 50, but always wanted to get my hands on the special vinyl.
I'd say Disc 1 of the 50th anniversary 2CD _Chateau_ is the best-sounding digital version I have of the original album. That's the Lurssen mastering, and I think it beats the 2019 Japanese SHM-CD and even the old MFSL gold CD from the early '90s. And I'm certain that's the Lurssen mastering on LP1 of the anniversary double-vinyl. I haven't yet played the splatter copy yet; I'm assuming it's the Ludwig remaster from 2017. The VMP _Chateau_ sounds really good too; but not so much better to justify paying whatever it goes for now. The 2LP anniversary set is still one of the nicest vinyl copies to own, I think, and not just because of the Lurssen mastering on LP1; it's also the only vinyl edition that includes that beautiful, oversized booklet.
Some really interesting Elton rarities I've seen watching Collecting Elton this past year. Congratulations, I really enjoy your program.
Thanks, Dennis! Much appreciated.
So cool - great gifts from collectors to collectors. Have 2 copies of the splatter and couldn't bear to give away the sealed copy - Alfonso generosity to me is even more remarkable - I feel unworthy lol. Extraordinary gift. Look forward to next video update and congrats on the first anniversary of your channel. Thanks for sharing. Only 14,028 km away
Thanks for the congrats. Yes, Alfonso was/is very generous. Just wait until next week's episode...
@CollectingElton Yea - I suspect certain vinyl release 1975 variant during period Elton was working with the other John. Might be wrong , but it did have "bigger" release x 4 than The Blood Record.
@@shineonugrzydieman Not a bad guess. It doesn't leave much of a "gift window" though, as Elton seldom saw JL after late 1974 and virtually never after Oct 1975. Maybe something released a little earlier than 1975?
Cool - I'm happy to be surprised. Don't want to spoil.
Congrats for the first anniversary of the channel. I have watched and enjoyed every video!

Never did buy the "splatter" but did get a similar disk for DON'T SHOOT ME I'M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER the next year. Yeah, "Ego" certainly did flop but EJ clearly liked the song and I saw it live on both his 1979 tour with Ray Cooper and his 1980 tour promoting 21 AT 33. I do like that HONKY CHATEAU alternate cover photo (used for "Rocket Man") do the bright pink does not work: the original beige/brown cover is ideal for the album. Nice new additions to your collection! Looking forward to the next grail!
Alfonso predicted that, after receiving the splatter vinyl he sent, I'd want to get the other "splatters". And he was right. I've been looking at them lately, drooling and wringing my hands. They don't seem to be flying off the shelves, though. I thought they would but there's a chance stores may begin to discount them just to get rid of them. I'm also wondering if I were to do another weekend in the States or something, I might be able to grab a few. Even after $$ exchange, they're still much cheaper down there than up here. Are there just the four of them? For some reason, I thought there were five. Perhaps I'm double-counting _Madman_ because of the "propeller vinyl" edition from 2022. How does your splatter _Don't Shoot Me_ sound? I don't like the pink too much either. I think a nice sky blue might've been the better tone for that design.
WOW! I always thought that the splatter discs were produced in the low thousands for worldwide consumers, but my thoughts have now been educated. Truly a remarkable gift indeed. This is similar to the number of discs produced for The Goaldiggers single, which was also only 500, and half were signed by EJ. I am looking forward to the next installment to see what can outshine this super grail. I'm on pins and needles on the edge of my seat. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Yes, 500 is one of the lowest runs of anything in Eltonography, at least commercial releases. That I can think of.
Lucky guy acquiring all those goodies
Well, the real treasure is the friends I've made along the... Aw hell, who am I kidding? The treasure is the grails, _grails_ and more GRAILS! 😆
I offer an early congratulations on your 1st anniversary!! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the generous sharing of your Elton collection and knowledge. The expression on your face and the use of “non-Canadian” language can only mean one thing…. Part 2 will see you unveiling the elusive blue vinyl edition of _The Lockdown Sessions_ ! Walmart sold out of those things in a hot second! Now I just have to figure out the connection between John Lennon and Lil Nas X!?
Lol. At one point in my region of Ontario, the blue vinyl version of _Lockdown_ was all you could find. Everywhere, too. Black vinyl copies were worth a fortune. Such high prices for frisbees. (I can only surmise that "Lil Nas X" is the product of some automated captioning feature?)
honky i have number 104 and 181 you are very lucky to get one of these
Wow Jay, two of them? Low numbers, too... You can retire! PS - Dude, did you just call me 'honky'? Lol. Touché.
just catching up with your amazing channel my victim of love on uk Rocket is turning gold , and is from the 1980s but Born Bad is spelt correctly
Thank you, glad you enjoy the channel. Interesting about the spelling correction. I'll make note of that. I wonder why, later on, they error reappeared. Hmm... someone at Universal messed up! But yeah, if it's bronzed that bad, it's definitely at PDO UK disc.
damn how did i miss this in 1982 but i am in the uk and been a collector since 1971 been looking for years and never yet found one in complete /excellent condition or ive missed out /outbid etc etc
Keep trying! You'll find one. If I can, anyone can!
Congratulations on reaching 600 Subscribers!!🎉
Thanks! I just bought a villa in Tuscany!
Are you aware of the UK versions? Same catalogue numbers but released under the 'Priceless' series. Generic series inner sleeves. Often cut by Jack Adams and people like that at Tape1One. The Caribou cover is similarly blurry. The labels are the DJM wedge type. All the DJM titles were involved except Greatest Hits 1 and 2 and for some reason Rock of the Westies. In fact I've never seen a UK released version of Rock of the Westies that wasn't just an original DJM pressing in the heavy gauge sleeve but with a tiny sticker placed over the original catalogue number. My guess is that they grossly over manufactured ROTW so had stock that lasted them through until vinyl pretty much died. The 'Priceless' series (also marked Phonogram) all sound pretty good; WAY better than some of the late 70s DJMs that are often very veiled in the upper frequencies. I've often wondered, even at the time of their release, whether they might have used early digital masters for these Phonogram releases. There's something a bit glassy about the sound.
I’d come across one or two of them but never considered them a UK counterpart to the 1987 series done at PRS Baarn. In my mind, the UK issues weren’t their own series. It seemed like PolyGram - having just acquired DJM Records in 1986 - simply added a few of EJ’s more popular titles from the early ‘70s into its pre-existing budget series (“Priceless”), which comprised albums from many artists. They didn't use Phonogram matrix codes, and the (re)use of the "wedge" label for those UK issues further suggested to me that PolyGram had no serious interest in continuing the DJM brand in the UK, at least not on vinyl. That said, those “Priceless” issues were clearly made by PolyGram for the UK market and post-date the PolyGram acquisition of DJM Records. Looks like four former DJM EJ titles were added to the “Priceless” series in 1986 and then _Caribou_ in 1987, the last year PolyGram issued any of its “Priceless” titles on vinyl. So, I guess I’ll have to get them for my collection… aarggh!! Lol. Edit: MCA overproduced _Westies_ too. Some of the later copies that shipped were just ca. 1975 originals with updated catalogue numbers gold-stamped across their covers.
PS - I should have added thanks for mentioning those. I'll mention them in the revised video description.
Great to see a dive into more obscure pressings of popular records! Have you or your friend ever discussed the mono pressing of Empty Sky?
Yes. I'll reveal more details in a future video. Certain tracks show significant differences (mono vs. stereo); others show little to no difference, in terms of track length or of elements/stems used or not used in one mix vs. the other.
Another great video! I'm excited to see what's coming from the channel in 2025.
We had them in Australia too. Under the budget “Priceless Recordings” line. Commencing in January 1988. Catalogue numbers are the same. I don’t have Madman or Caribou but I do have Don’t Shoot Me and the cover art is identical. All of the ones I have had new lacquers cut and were pressed locally. I don’t know the source so they might be new analogue cuts or cut from digital files. I think they sound great.
Now, that's interesting. The Dutch copies were for mainland Europe (including the UK), I believe; but if they appeared with the same cat. numbers in other parts of the world, that's something I'll want to look into further. For some reason, Australian Phonogram seems to have rarely (if ever) pressed using Aus's Polygram facility; so, I'd be curious to know whether it was Aus CBS or another plant that did the Aus copies. One thing I cut from my voiceover (the video was getting long) was that I suspect that the masters sources for these 1987 DJM reissues may have been digital. It's just something about their sound; despite the clarity in these discs' upper ranges, they have a sterility to them typical of some early digital sources, back when the technology was still in its infancy.
For the Caribou, in making the effort to get the text so similar to the original, you'd think that they would have taken the extra minute to obtain the original photo proofs to get that right as well. As for the inner sleeve, I have seen many examples of albums having different intensity of colors when produced in different countries. Perhaps it's the quality of the printing machine that is key, whereas different copier models produce different color schemes. One country might have a superior machine over another.
And when I kept seeing you handle the discs with your bare hands, I kept thinking "Shouldn't you be wearing white gloves?" LOL
You're probably correct about the large image on the inner sleeve. In fact, it's the only image in the 1987 copy that isn't that fuzzy or weird with colors; it's just a boldness/intensity thing. About white gloves: I have considered using them; but I always handle these with clean (i.e. recently washed) hands. Plus I try my best not to remove LPs from their sleeves by "pinching" the edges but rather via the "proper" way, which (I'm told) is to reach into the inner sleeve or bag, place the tip of your middle finger into the spindle hole, place your thumb on the LP's edge, and remove the disc. It took me a few years to get the hang of that, actually, but it's better than "pinching". I used to "pinch" all the time! I'm glad that I reformed.
Superb video Matt, and thanks for the plug! I'm with you on the low end needing more boost. They focused on the high end and sound stage at the expense of the low end... But never the less it's a very good job for a reissue considering how muffled the 1981 UK reissues sounds. As for the perfect copy of Madman, I'm still searching. I had a original UK but it was a later pressing with plenty of service noise. My DJC SA press is now my go too, but there's room for improvement. Regards Robert
My best vinyl copy of _Madman_ is my original UK DJM by Pye. But yes, it took me a while to find a copy that hadn't been scratched up. The 2016 reissue sounds almost as good, if you don't mind LPs cut from digital sources. One thing I cut from my voiceover (the video was getting long) was that I suspect that the masters sources for these 1987 DJM reissues may have been digital. It's just something about their sound; despite the clarity in these discs' upper ranges, they have a sterility to them that some early digital sources tended to have, back when the technology was still in its infancy.
Another CARIBOU for your collection! How many copies, now? Everything about that cover "should" be blurry...very blurry. I agree with Gus Dudgeon's assessment about the CARIBOU cover! Too bad that these issues didn't come fully packaged (eg. gatefold and insert for MADMAN ACRROSS THE WATER, etc.). Those re-issues were at a time when CDs had become the dominant sellers. Being in Canada, I never came across these re-issues when hanging around "Records on Wheels" and "Sams." All this was new for me. Thanks for posting.
I'd have been surprised if any of these 1987 discs turned up as imports in Canada, even at the big Sam's in Toronto. Even in 1987, we still had that line of MCA budget issues in stores, albeit some titles had long since disappeared from MCA's catalogue by then. I believe that's my eleventh or twelfth vinyl copy of Caribou. It sold so well in the 1970s of course, and remained available on vinyl in so many parts of the world up to the end of the 1980s, that I really shouldn't feel as surprised as I do that I have so many copies -- or that they're seldom expensive! It's the vinyl copies of _Goodbye Yellow Brick Road_ that -- no matter how many copies of those have been pressed since 1973 -- go for so much, even dull-sounding MCA copies in less-than-great condition. You make a good point, one that I forgot to make in the video: Another big difference between then 2016+ Universal/Mercury vinyl reissues and these 1987 reissues is the artwork and packaging. We were spoiled back in the late 2010s! Those were luxurious reissues in every way. Now I see some the earliest of the 2016-17 reissues still available but in "reduced" sleeves, _Madman_ being one of them. It's not a gatefold anymore. I think I've also seen the standard black vinyl 2017 _Captain Fantastic_ in a non-gatefold sleeve too. I guess Universal can't justify the ongoing cost of printing those sleeves, which makes sense. For those albums to remain available new for newer listeners, Universal must cut corners I guess. It's really amazing that, eight years later, so many of those are still available at all.
Great to hear from you again with something new to me! This is kind of a “missing link” between the originals and the more recent reissues. Please don’t let these sound great, because I can’t afford to collect a new series of albums! p.s. Is that a new knife??
"Missing link" is definitely a good term. -- now I wish I'd thought of it while recording the voiceover! That knife is *the* new knife I got back in October and feel so proud of myself for getting. It's so good that I used it to cut some pretty thick carpet the other day when I was making improvements to this room. And it's still as sharp as it was when I took it out of the Amazon package!
I agree with you about the Australian _Live in Australia_ labels. I prefer the bolder “Australian” color, but reversing the images caused overlap and interference with the text which had been carefully laid out around “left-sided” images. This made the text difficult to read, especially with the bolder images. I don’t think this would be an intentional choice. Just be thankful MCA didn’t use the popular fading Tan/Brown label we all love!
I agree. I cut it in the finished video but in the raw take I speculate that it was probably an error, based on the placement of the text, especially in the upper half of each label. That and the fact that it wasn't just the images that were reversed but their order too (using the Side 1 and 3 label image for Sides 2 and 4, etc.). Probably some intern!
Happy new year! and cant wait to see what you have in store for this year
Thanks for sharing Have shared on several Elton John Facebook groups Your videos are great bringing unusual versions / country releases making me appreciate what there is out there plus what I have. Looking forward to next video
Thank you, as always, for sharing my videos around. Happy new year!
Another fun ride on the EJ train 🎶 I like the Predators hoodie 💯 I lived in Nashville for years before I came to Houston. Another cool connection besides the music cheers from Houston.✌️🇺🇸✌️💕💕
I loved the Preds, especially during the Mike Fisher era. But since moving back to Canada, I've begun supporting Canadian teams more... because, boy, do they need it!
Happy New Year Matt! Thnx for the kind mention, you're very welcome. Look forward to seeing your Channel go from strength to strength this year and into the future. 😀😀😀 Wow, love that Curtains 45 I've never seen that release.😀😀😀
