In Europe (Germany) those big pockets on the back are traditionally on hunting jackets. Today they are mostly used for maps, even thermoses and stuff like that, but we still call it "Niederwildtasche" which translated means "small game pocket". Way back when only the nobility was allowed to hunt, people did it secretly, mainly on small game and used thosed pockets on the back to hide the shot game and bring it back home.
I got the Yukon Extremes Full Swing a few weeks ago in January. It is stiff, but very free feeling and very warm. A 30 minute walk at 30f, I'm sweating by the time I get to work. I have to open my coat and let the 20 degree wind cool me down. I'm not heavy and usually I have good temp control, but the insulation is awesome. If you value movement, get a full swing.

I worked over night private sanitation in NYC for 4 years. I have both yukon old models Coveralls (Bibs) & Overalls. Trust me they saved my life. You forgot to add that the old models are 100% waterproof. Old school gets the job done. Great review 😃

In 1992 I bought Carhartt insulated overalls and an Carhartt insulated jacket with the faux fur on the removable hood. Used every winter since then on survey crew and soil testing for land development and road projects. Still going strong and keeping me warm. Washed 2 times. One of the Surveyors told me the stitching falls apart when you use washing machine. Instead, air dry the overalls and jacket, then get after the dirt with a stiff brush. After soil testing, I would hose off the gear with the hose in the yard then air dry.
Pile acrylic was originally for marine use. You'd stay warm even when wet and North European companies like Helly Hansen built a reputation on practical gear for deep sea fishermen, lifeboat crews etc. The pile is breathable because it's air permeable, and you'd wear a waterproof layer over it. The reality is you'd still get wet but the pile fleece would keep you warm & dry out quickly. Obviously Patagonia launched their own pile fleece product for outdoors adventurers in the 70s but it was based on the humble (and cheap) marine pile. European hikers & mountaineers sometimes call "pertex & pile" a "wetsuit" because the idea is to shield you from the wind and keep you warm when wet, rather than stop you getting wet in the first place. Dampness is inevitable under some conditions because waterproof membranes aren't breathable enough so your own sweat makes them damp or because at sea you're guaranteed to get a bit wet, but still need to keep body heat to avoid hypothermia. The humble pile fleece has saved many lives over the years. It's one of the great clothing inventions of the 20th century.

I don’t know who made them, but the absolute best winter work coat I have ever had was the 2013 snap on winter coat. Flannel lined, has like 15 pockets, the hood is lined and cinches down around your face. No clue who made them, and the manufacturer seems to change every year and I haven’t seen another one that has been as heavy duty since then
For the new extremes line, Carhartt needs to bring the optional hood out in the burnt olive color. I picked up that color in the full swing coat before realizing they’re only selling the corresponding hood in black. Ultimately I rather have function over aesthetics, but I’m hoping I can have both.

Best thing I ever purchased jacket wise was the carhartt Sherpa lined vest I needed a carhartt jacket I could wear all day with the free movement off my arms and not have to take it off to drive
The Carhartt extreme coveralls are the real deal!! Keeps me warm on my motorcycle on 40 degree Farenheit days along with full face helmet and gloves of course… but i just where one layer of clothing under the coveralls!! That’s impressive no long johns….also i wear them outside to do mechanic work in below 32 degree weather. Only place i was cold was my hands nothing to do with the coveralls….
Ivowned the older jacket for 20 plus years, work in ìt all the time. First year owning nite I ran around the front of my jeep and snaged the jacket on my winch cable and there I was hanging. I got the C55 coat for excavating in sw Ontario, Canada in 2003. I didn't use it for construction the entire time, but it lasted 14 or 15 years. The zipper eventually gave out. When I found out they were "redesigned" I bought the C55 again and a J133. I plan on returning one, I wanted to compare them for fit. I can't decide. I ordered the R33's as well. I'll sacrifice a little mobility for unbeatable durability! I can say my original C55 never looked dirty, or worn out. And it did eventually feel broken in around year 7 or 8.
The map pocket or the back pocket on that parka, I’d use it for gloves. For me some thing need bare hands to accomplish the task and I’ll take on my gloves and throw them in there, that or like a balaclava or toque so when I start sweating i can rip it off and have a dedicated spot for it, then it’s not on top of my phone or box cutter and then isn’t in the way. I wear a Surveyor’s vest in the colder months and it has that map pocket too and that’s honestly what I use it for. I imagine the parka can be used the same way
the map pocket is typically used for electronic blue prints, i.e ipad....so when you dont need to hold you can put in pocket, because when you walk all over a jobsite and set your ipad down, you may have forgotten where that was...in my experience, great video!!!! thanks!!
Carl, you should check out the Corcoran 1500 or 1510 jump boots. Absolutely solid, built like tanks, and fly under the radar constantly despite their low price point.
Great review, man! However, I am skeptical about Carhartts decision to start using plastic zippers on their new coats. I guess time will tell if they hold up or not. I do commercial & industrial HVAC in the Midwest & when a person is working out doors with temps that hit -20 the last thing I wanna be worried about is a plastic zipper breaking.
I love ❤️ the old active jacket 🧥 I have the j133 and I don’t work blue collar jobs. I just simply wear it when leaving the house 🏡 and it broke in significantly in one winter 🥶 I wish they made the new jacket with the new materials but kept the exact same design as the old active jac. It’s a classic style and the new style looks like everything else you can buy.
I have the old model of the whole Extreme serie. Im in eastern canada and winter can be pretty rough Well never cold enough for the Yukon bib and the active jacket, one or the other😂 ! I've worked on my knees in the snow for 10-12h fixing heating equipment in -30celcius with no problem at all, had to take some break to take the whole kit off to breath a little. Very high quality and warm stuff
Hey I found your channel from looking up DIY videos on waxing canvas jackets. Ironically enough I live in New England and I’m in my first year as an electrical apprentice. I have the Yukon jacket and STIFF is an understatement. I bought the medium because the large was very baggy but now I’m experiencing some uncomfortable tension in the upper back and shoulder area. So I decided to take it to a tailor and make a vest out of it. It will be unique because it will be hooded as well. One good thing is this jacket is very warm.
Cheers for that, a lot of work put in that vid. Here in the UK we get wet and windy winters, rather than cold. I would relish cold and dry. Really like the look of the Parka though.
I like coats, I'm in to warm. I'm in to tough. I had heard of the "Extremes for a while. Met a guide who swore there was nothing better on the market for the price. So, I bought one. she was right. For under $200 on Amazon nothing can touch them . I bought my 29 year old son one. He wouldn't take anything for his. Says it is the warmest toughest coat he has ever had . We had a bitter cold week recently I'm talking bone chilling cold. I took my Berne thermal lined hoody and combined it with the Yukon Extreme. Unbelievable how warm. In my opinion there is no other coat that can even come close to the Yukon Extreme for rain ,snow, cold or wind. It's like unbeatable in the $200 range. I got my son his off Amazon for $169 I also got him the Berne thermal lined zip up hoody for $49 , 100% real wool gloves and a merino wool toboggan and I'm so great in his eyes now. Whatever works right? Peace.
since you need the dexterity and mobility, wear a pair of rubber gloves under a pair of mechanix gloves or something. that’s about the best i’ve found.
I work at a farm and I bought the extreme coat for $170 yeah little pricy but it's what you would expect out of Carhartt.Tough restricts movement a little but super warm with a Carhartt Rain Defender hoodie underneath.

Best coat for the money there is, most are cheaply built junk for more money, carhartt is really stepping up, better hope it's real cold or you'll be roasting, the shell of it is the best part.
For short durations, I might store a clipboard, or plans in that big seat pocket; in the rain or snow perhaps. Another thought - the parka can work as a snowboarding jacket if you are double tasking your outerwear.
I have that carhartt jacket. I also have a Duluth whale back parka. The Duluth is superior at movement and warmth. It doesn't seem like it would be as tough as the carhartt. But, its 200 so I don't use it as a work jacket, I just wear it when it's in the teens and windy. If its between 15 and 30 the carhartt comes out. And any jacket will do above 30.
Carhartt said they have discontinued all Yukon extremes products. What's a shame the Yukon line was my absolute favorite. I think I'll never find another jacket like it again. 😔
hey! for a base layer give the Airblaster ninja suit a try , you wont get better for movablity and warmth particualy if you try the Marina one . truely incredible
I have the coveralls. They are very warm and takes a beating, but that nylon melts very easy when running a angle grinder or welding. Mine went to the mending lady to patch the melt holes. Making them melt resistant would be nice, other wise is a good product other than the price.
on the old logger jackets like the Filson Makinaw , it was used to store maps bit I guess you could use it for blueprints etc or other paper work on the josite which you don't want to lose etc.
Hello 👋. You should check out Aramark SteelGuard™ 30° Below Insulated Coveralls, they are fantastic. A lot like Carhartt very durable and warm . But I have seen them for as low as $99.99 . And they come included with a great insulated hood also .
I've been considering buying this stuff. I'm coming from Northern New York and need some snow gear that will last sometime and adequately address the conditions I undergo. Mostly ice fishing and framing in the cold. Would you recommend?
I spend alot of time in the desert camping and riding dirt bikes/hiking , and the wind can be hell , and i love the coveralls , and the old coat for inside the camper shell my old coat after many washing soften up but had to retreat for rain , but its still one of the best coats ever , the cover all are great for riding , but would love to have some that have the cargo pockets , always something just don't have the bucks for lol thanks for the video , new sub bro
@@jamesnm21 yep have vest , and a small day pack as well , can't have enough pockets out there even have some coveralls that are sleeved , just can't find any that have cargo pockets, good idea sewing some on , I don't sew worth crap but not out there for looks anyway , thanks great idea,
@@redwing771 youtube has some good how to tutorials for cargo pockets. One trick I use is sticking the two seams together with fabric adhesive to hold everything in place before stitching. Makes it a lot easier and better finished result. You might even find some adhesive pockets you could iron on and reinforce with some stitching but not sure on that.
My 15 year old pair of Walls Blizzard Proof coveralls are still my favorite for winter work on the ranch or for camping when it's around freezing. Waterproof ass and knees for the win. I heard they don't make them like they did back then. Hopefully I never have to find out.
Once somebody figures out how to make coveralls fit and look cool everybody will buy them. The "I don't wanna look like a redneck" factor is huge. Lol.
I once worked in 40 below 0 Fahrenheit and like 40 mile an hour wind. I assure you if you put on enough of the right stuff you wont even feel the cold. Wed lay down in snowbanks and fall asleep cause we were in it like 12 hours a day with 1 break to eat frozen sandwiches 🤣 I had long johns 2 facemasks, 1 thin one thick, 2 shitts, a hoodie, carhart coveralls a carhart jacket. Multiple hats, multiple gloves and goggles. Like and i was decently mobile. Basically just keep adding layers and you will hit a point where youd need to be in antarctica to get cold. It was also construction so i was moving. But like you lay down in snow you could fall asleep. I was waterproof and the snow blocked the wind. We were like a mile from heat so going inside was basically not an option. And the reason you do construction in winter is rich people lol. They will pay you 5x to do it in winter cause rich people dont care. Alot of people wait and call when its too late. Then offer tons to do it in the snow.
I like the full swing jacket it’s very warm a few cons are the zipper for one gets stuck at the bottom I even returned it because of it and the new one is the same. The other thing is that Carhart doesn’t have a hood in the burnt olive color only black I’ve called and was told they won’t have a hood, ridiculous
Another warm option is the Fire Hose Superior hooded coat and bibs from Duluth. I love mine since it's still heavy but has all the gussets and full swing cuts for easy movement, even when bundled up in fridges temps.
👉This coat (full swing) has a slightly "fitted" cut BUT it has shoulder gussets that allow you FULL RANGE OF MOTION when stretching and moving so the coat doesn't bind around your shoulders causing the sleeves to hike up your arms when you reach overhead or extend your arms when working. This is a feature that more coats should have as it adds a LOT to the comfort and wearability. It's not quite as flexible as a soft shell or the unbeatable "hoodie", but not bad either and the toughness of the shell is nice when doing rougher tasks and should break in with some wear. I'm no mongoloid, I'm 6ft with an identical reach but sleeves often tend to run a little short for me. The sleeve length was perfect on this jacket. Overall worth the money if it fits well AND keeps you warm and dry. They could have made it fully waterproof vs water resistant but that's not a huge deal.

I have always fought the elastic waistband on any coat with them. I'd love the classic active jacket without an elastic waist.

Cheers for that, a lot of work put in that vid. Here in the UK we get wet and windy winters, rather than cold. I would relish cold and dry. Really like the look of the Parka though.

I like coats, I'm in to warm. I'm in to tough. I had heard of the "Extremes for a while. Met a guide who swore there was nothing better on the market for the price. So, I bought one.
she was right. For under $200 on Amazon nothing can touch them . I bought my 29 year old son one. He wouldn't take anything for his. Says it is the warmest toughest coat he has ever had . We had a bitter cold week recently I'm talking bone chilling cold. I took my Berne thermal lined hoody and combined it with the Yukon Extreme. Unbelievable how warm. In my opinion there is no other coat that can even come close to the Yukon Extreme for rain ,snow, cold or wind. It's like unbeatable in the $200 range. I got my son his off Amazon for $169 I also got him the Berne thermal lined zip up hoody for $49 , 100% real wool gloves and a merino wool toboggan and I'm so great in his eyes now. Whatever works right? Peace.

I dunno. Just picked up a pair of firehose insulated bibs. Tried on 1x so far.. Pretty comfy😁 have had 2 sets of carhartt 1s. They are nice as well.

since you need the dexterity and mobility, wear a pair of rubber gloves under a pair of mechanix gloves or something. that’s about the best i’ve found.
I work at a farm and I bought the extreme coat for $170 yeah little pricy but it's what you would expect out of Carhartt.Tough restricts movement a little but super warm with a Carhartt Rain Defender hoodie underneath.

Best coat for the money there is, most are cheaply built junk for more money, carhartt is really stepping up, better hope it's real cold or you'll be roasting, the shell of it is the best part.

For short durations, I might store a clipboard, or plans in that big seat pocket; in the rain or snow perhaps. Another thought - the parka can work as a snowboarding jacket if you are double tasking your outerwear.
I have that carhartt jacket. I also have a Duluth whale back parka. The Duluth is superior at movement and warmth. It doesn't seem like it would be as tough as the carhartt. But, its 200 so I don't use it as a work jacket, I just wear it when it's in the teens and windy. If its between 15 and 30 the carhartt comes out. And any jacket will do above 30.

The full swing coats also have the internal drawstring instead of the elastic waistband
The insulated parka maybe can be worn inside out and still looks badass!
Carhartt said they have discontinued all Yukon extremes products. What's a shame the Yukon line was my absolute favorite. I think I'll never find another jacket like it again. 😔
hey! for a base layer give the Airblaster ninja suit a try , you wont get better for movablity and warmth particualy if you try the Marina one . truely incredible

I have the coveralls. They are very warm and takes a beating, but that nylon melts very easy when running a angle grinder or welding. Mine went to the mending lady to patch the melt holes. Making them melt resistant would be nice, other wise is a good product other than the price.
Bamboo might be an option for this. It's similar to cotton but wicks moisture better.
Just got the Yukon Active jac. Had to toss the last one after over 7 years. That one got put through hell☺️

on the old logger jackets like the Filson Makinaw , it was used to store maps bit I guess you could use it for blueprints etc or other paper work on the josite which you don't want to lose etc.

I've been considering buying this stuff. I'm coming from Northern New York and need some snow gear that will last sometime and adequately address the conditions I undergo. Mostly ice fishing and framing in the cold. Would you recommend?
Definitely, you could use the bibs and the parka together for a pretty insane combo.

I spend alot of time in the desert camping and riding dirt bikes/hiking , and the wind can be hell , and i love the coveralls , and the old coat for inside the camper shell my old coat after many washing soften up but had to retreat for rain , but its still one of the best coats ever , the cover all are great for riding , but would love to have some that have the cargo pockets , always something just don't have the bucks for lol thanks for the video , new sub bro
Sew some pockets on. Vests are also a great option and often come with lots of pockets and total range of motion with no sleeves.
@@jamesnm21 yep have vest , and a small day pack as well , can't have enough pockets out there even have some coveralls that are sleeved , just can't find any that have cargo pockets, good idea sewing some on , I don't sew worth crap but not out there for looks anyway , thanks great idea,
@@redwing771 youtube has some good how to tutorials for cargo pockets. One trick I use is sticking the two seams together with fabric adhesive to hold everything in place before stitching. Makes it a lot easier and better finished result. You might even find some adhesive pockets you could iron on and reinforce with some stitching but not sure on that.
now they just need the bibs to match the nice new coat!
My 15 year old pair of Walls Blizzard Proof coveralls are still my favorite for winter work on the ranch or for camping when it's around freezing. Waterproof ass and knees for the win. I heard they don't make them like they did back then. Hopefully I never have to find out.
Once somebody figures out how to make coveralls fit and look cool everybody will buy them. The "I don't wanna look like a redneck" factor is huge. Lol.

I once worked in 40 below 0 Fahrenheit and like 40 mile an hour wind. I assure you if you put on enough of the right stuff you wont even feel the cold. Wed lay down in snowbanks and fall asleep cause we were in it like 12 hours a day with 1 break to eat frozen sandwiches 🤣
I had long johns 2 facemasks, 1 thin one thick, 2 shitts, a hoodie, carhart coveralls a carhart jacket. Multiple hats, multiple gloves and goggles. Like and i was decently mobile.
Basically just keep adding layers and you will hit a point where youd need to be in antarctica to get cold. It was also construction so i was moving. But like you lay down in snow you could fall asleep. I was waterproof and the snow blocked the wind. We were like a mile from heat so going inside was basically not an option.
And the reason you do construction in winter is rich people lol. They will pay you 5x to do it in winter cause rich people dont care. Alot of people wait and call when its too late. Then offer tons to do it in the snow.

I like the full swing jacket it’s very warm a few cons are the zipper for one gets stuck at the bottom I even returned it because of it and the new one is the same. The other thing is that Carhart doesn’t have a hood in the burnt olive color only black I’ve called and was told they won’t have a hood, ridiculous

Another warm option is the Fire Hose Superior hooded coat and bibs from Duluth. I love mine since it's still heavy but has all the gussets and full swing cuts for easy movement, even when bundled up in fridges temps.

👉This coat (full swing) has a slightly "fitted" cut BUT it has shoulder gussets that allow you FULL RANGE OF MOTION when stretching and moving so the coat doesn't bind around your shoulders causing the sleeves to hike up your arms when you reach overhead or extend your arms when working. This is a feature that more coats should have as it adds a LOT to the comfort and wearability. It's not quite as flexible as a soft shell or the unbeatable "hoodie", but not bad either and the toughness of the shell is nice when doing rougher tasks and should break in with some wear. I'm no mongoloid, I'm 6ft with an identical reach but sleeves often tend to run a little short for me. The sleeve length was perfect on this jacket. Overall worth the money if it fits well AND keeps you warm and dry. They could have made it fully waterproof vs water resistant but that's not a huge deal.
