I agree that *when the scanning works* the loss of two SCU means very little. If I am carrying stuff then it is more often delivery boxes & armour boxes etc.
The Cutter is my favourite starter. We'll probably find that a lot of ships get rebalancing when it comes to component sizes, once the resource system comes along.

This ship really reminded me of the Raptor from Battlestar Galactica in function and sort of in form. I picked one up for situations when I'm doing multiship operations and moving a lot of cargo. Could be useful when the scanning changes are implemented.

From what I was able to gather during the UI panel at CitCon, we will be able to name and mark locations and then sell that data to other players. That would suggest that if you found a big quantanium deposit for example, you could sell that location to a miner for a reasonable finders fee. It seems like the plan is eventually to not have all ships capable of scanning for resources, and so for new players this Cutter could be the play if surveying interests them. It offers a different gameplay loop that focuses on just flying around and exploring, while also being able to profit off of players who are focused on mining or salvage. You could even Scout for bases and sell their locations to pirates or rival orgs eventually down the road when bases get implemented.
I can definitely see this Cutter variant being a popular option once the scanning and data running mechanics are properly implemented. It seems like it has a pretty clear niche while the original Cutter is simply a small delivery van.

@@sempiterno3243 Ya I'm quite excited for it. It will give a profit incentive for just flying around exploring the planets, plus it will make a big difference for the other play styles as well. Miners for example, will be able to pay a small percentage of their prospective profit in order to skip having to survey for minerals and will be able to instead hop from deposit to deposit. I really like the mining in this game, but it can be sort of a let down when you spend more time flying around than actually mining.
I've been looking at all the "explorers" for this specific reason. I love the idea of just scanning, exploring, and eventually selling location data for a small cut. It sounds like a super chill experience. I have been debating on upgrading to the scout cause it would only be $20 more. I purchased the mustang starter back in 2016, but I have been waiting on game play updates. The UI/map and interaction updates they showed a Citizencon are exactly the kind of updates I have been waiting on, to really skin my teeth in.
I melted my base Cutter and got the Scout. 2 vs 4 SCU to me does not make much difference since even 4 feels like way too little to bother with unless it is salvage cargo. Personally I never hauled actual cargo in my Cutter. I'll use my Corsair or MSR for that. Cutter is for just bouncing about the system with an STV stuffed in the back doing camper van stuff. The scanning could come in handy. Though I'll be the oddball and say I don't really like the spoiler. I liked the 2 angled fins better. If scanning never becomes a fun thing one day I might swap back to the basic just for the old engines and fins.
So you can still store 6scu of cargo and in the ship. It just won’t fit nicely.
@@asog88 Nice. I have not tried putting any cargo boxes in it yet to see how they ride. Standard Cutter I'd carry a few box mission boxes or my STV backed in hugging the wall and then pulled towards the ramp as far as possible makes it so you can get in and out of the STV and the door to the rest of the ship. Never really hauled real cargo in it though. But always good to have an idea of how much can be crammed in it.
Also you can wait for the expedition variant if you are not sure for the scout.
I went ahead and grabbed it for $5. With the scanning and map stuff that they showed at CitCon I figured that $5 for a ship with enhanced scanning was a no brainer.
Especially because a single starter can be nice, so if your dream ship is dead you can do stuff while the claim timer chimes

I like it. I CCU'd my base Cutter for the Herald and grabbed the two-pack Cutter/Cutter Scout.
Size 2 components make me wonder what will happen with the Hornet Tracker, since that's supposed to have a radar upgrade.

Edit: Hoping CIG will add like in Elite Dangerous ship mods, where you can add trim and other items on the exterior, they even had weapons and exhaust coloring for customizing the look of our ships.
I would guess that would never happen.Eventually we will be able to paint our skins. But think CR isn't going to want us to put bling on our ship. At least from what you wrote it sounds kinda link bling. I have not played ED.
I hope for a prospector version with a tailhook for cargo trailers

The Battery is to add additional power, when the new engineering gameplay arrives. Apparently you cant have all modules running with your normal power plant but a battery allows this.
The battery can be recharged after use.
Guessing it could also be used in stealth scenario? Shut the power off and run life-support on battery.

Now that SQ42 is FINALLY feature complete, I'm crossing my fingers that we see more resources get allocated to working on the remaining careers, and we get at least some T0 form of Exploration gameplay to go with this ship and the Zeus MKII explorer variant in 2024-2025.

the presence of the battery is not confusing at all.
most likely it is for when you turn everything off and only want to use life support and the scanner.
then you are virtually invisible to the ships you are scanning.
For me it was a no-brainer. But only because I like the 2x2 engines more than those 2 giant ones which give way to little acceleration for what they look like. ^^
I only use it as a Taxi and Delivery-Mission runner anyway.
The best thing that came with it is the new black paint anyway. ^^

I always liked how the Cutter's engines were balanced in the middle of the ship. It makes VTOL more believable. Conversely, my beloved CuttyB has engines that are way to the rear. It gives an unrealistic sense of VTOL lift, breaking emersion for me. I'd love it if the CuttyB had a smaller set of VTOL tilt-thrusters on the front stantions to distribute the weight.
Original Cutty had thrusters instead of the side doors which made it appear more balanced. I am not sure why they kept the VTOL rear thrusters when they redesigned the cutty. It would definitely somersault in VTOL mode.

I got this because mostly because it was a 45 dollar lifetime insurance, as my other ship has 6 months I figured why not up my arsenal? Its a very fun compact ship that can get in and out of tight spots. My complaint is that its very slow, if you have an enemy ship harassing you things look pretty grim.
I should note for others that its currently bugged with the satellite dish not expanding.
I think this will become an integral piece of every fleet until a more powerful radar by another manufacturer challenges the scout because it will allow you to see where potential targets are coming from or where past targets have gone. With base building, having a constant radar seeing ~50km and ships quantum jumping will be absolutely essential for defense. Perhaps the opposite as well for finding idling ships? All of this becomes 10x more effective when everyone is on the same server but interesting to think about nonetheless.
Still waiting for the third variant to be revealed, but if it's not something I like I'm definitely going for the Scout
It's an expedition variant. With a table next to the bed and toilet in the cargo and some square gizmo on the roof.

The ability to drop a quantum beacon! Which means you can mark salvage, rocks, enemies.
I didn't upgrade I just bought the scout. Love them both.
Looks more useful than the standard Cutter. It's not like the rear is useful for cargo or vehicles meaningfully so anything else is going to enhance it.
Can you explain scanning capability? How does this dish differ from a Terapin, or any of the explorers?
I'd still recommend the base Cutter for now for new players looking for a starter. The Scout is a cheap enough upgrade in the future when the extra scanning will matter. That being said, I picked up a Scout with some store credits since I already have a ship for every purpose.
It seems like a cool variant, but just fair warning from a friend of mine who switched, this variant can not fit a ROC or MULE inside it like the regular cutter can, just something to consider.

being able to detect a QED trap before you fly into it is woth the loss of 1 SCU. Perhaps the next one is a size 10 torpeedo ship.. (or what ever size would fit on the patform)

the interior is slightly different (bed bathroom area).. I think bathroom door is different and theres more space in front of the door and also on the left there used to be a little shelf/nook I used to put my turtle on that seems to be gone in your footage
The big thing for me is that it's got 6000 quantum fuel which is insane for a starter ship. To put in perspective that's more fuel than all the other exploration ships minus the Carrack.
I believe it was fixed at 1960, which is still a lot but not op. (The average quantum capacity for small ships is around 600, while for medium ships starts at 2500).
Yeah still gets about 3.5X the range of most starters. In that aspect is makes most sense as a starter. None of the starters are really good at fighting so getting one with a bed and interior space is important. The only small ship that still has messed up quantum range is the Hull A, which for some reason has enough fuel to nearly match a C2 in range. Has to also be a mistake in numbers. The only thing more absurd is the range of the Argo Raft which is the absolute long range king at 5000mkm. They need to change the range of the Starfarer as well because the fuel truck will not be doing much rescuing when it has less range than the damn Cutter.
Drake already has a nearly worthless medical ship, the Cutty Red, which is useful for fixing boo-boos and not much else. Same as the Pieces. How many bandaid capable ships are required? I could see a prospector type, but for gems not the big rocks. Same size head as the Roc. So instead of stuffing roc into the back of the cutter scout and pulling it out, just land next to gem and open back door and maybe use a ground mounted turret device, like the Cutty Steal, that does cutting and extracting. Scout already has the dish on top for scanning, so take out one of the 2 SCU of cargo to add in a floor mounted laser and the other SCU for the minerals to be deposited into. Make it hold more than a big Roc and it will be pretty decent. Better than having to haul a Roc out of any transport each time.

Didn't see much of a point on the regular cutter unless you want a hauler type starter ship, but this is a nice little runabout with some utility!.

For experienced players its probably a no brainer, but a new player wont be able to get their feet wet in trading with only 2scu and would have to jump into a specialized gameplay right away. So they will both keep their reason for having i think
If it were a bigger ship with a 50% loss of cargo space like 100SCU --> 50SCU, I think it would be a harder sell but with something this size, I don't think it's that big of a deal in exchange for scanning.
I THINK there was a leak saying the the 3rd Cutter would be an Expedition varient with a food machine and other things to help it make long trips into uncharted areas. I'm not quite sure what its function will be just yet but I guess we'll see later this year.

I would like to see what "scanning" gameplay would end up like? On a basic level I would love for these scanning ships to be able to ping 40-80km out for the existing scannables. Say for example you are working along side a Prospector or Vulture and the Scout can ping pockets of the asteroid belt to get an estimation so you're not wasting time flying 100km in dead end directions.
Is the Vtol on the scout smaller than the regular cutter? Does it fly the same?
My Scout's radar saucer does nothing. When I saw your showing it moving .. I'm like .. hey I've noticed that .. because it doesn't (on mine)
... and an STV fits in it .. and better if you back in. You may have to use the "enter pilot seat" animation to get around the fenders.

I'm just envision door gunners on a tiny ship like this lol. Although, you could do a setup like the MH-6 helicopter, have people sitting outside the actual doors, would be kind of cool if impractical.
Got one of those, tried to put the referral hoverquad into it and the hoverquad and ship exploded.... what i did?
Melted the Cutter Scout standalone, and turned the useless Hoverquad into a unmeltable Cutter Scout..... and it will forever be.
i bought this ship for the sole purpose of getting lifetime insurance and for some reason i kind of accidentally fell in love with it lol. i think i'm going to keep him. atleast until i find a ship that i want to upgrade to and have insurance on forever.
can someone tell me what scanning is supposedly used for in the future? Like would this scanner only be for ships in space most likely, or would you be able to search for things like caves on planet or maybe ore in asteroids and such?
My prediction for the third cutty variant will be a tugboat/flying tool box with a tractor beam at the back.

I mean if we are thinking a cutter armed to the teeth it seems like the natural way to do it would be trade 2SCU for a size 2 top mounted missile launcher with ammo feed inside the cargo bay.
Only reason to swap for this is vehicle inventory (2000 mSCU then 650 for the standard). Like the old ship the inventory is the same amount of SCU of cargo... Caterpillar docet!
Sorry, checked and standard version now have 4000 mSCU. But, if I remember right, in previuvs patch cutter have 2500 quantum fuel, now 1900.

low power and high power scans aren’t in game yet, Jump to scan points will be implemented when the new scanning system is.
Bomber Cutter, holds 1 size 10 bomb. Can be armed while still inside the ship.
the only reason not to upgrade is the pending version 3 of the cutter best wait for that in case the scout cutter is priced above the unknown version

You can only CCU to a ship at least $5 more. So this can't be priced higher than the other variant and still be able to CCU from the base to it. It could, however, be the same price as this version meaning people who upgraded to this couldn't do an even trade without melting and rebuying.
I don’t see Drake making a combat cutter. If you want a small Drake ship with a ridiculous weapons load out for it’s size, the buccaneer is available.

Just checked it has 650k micro SCU. And its not under the bed its to the left of it in the cabinet.
The Cutter Varients were leaked last IAE, the other one is going to be an "Expedition" version. What makes any "Expedition" ship different from a scout/recon I don't know. I like that there is a Cutter scout, but I would still take the Terrapin over it any day. The only thing that the Cutter Scout has over the Terrapin is the 2SCU. The guns on the Terrapin are size 2, but on a turret, so effectively gimbaled meaning you don't have to drop a gun size to be gimbaled. The Terrapin has a size 3 scanning dish so it will be able to either scan further or with more sensitivity. Realistically, the Cutter Scout is the Pirate's Terrapin lol.

Wish CIG would design a ship with a large viewing area (glass or something like it), to admire the scenery when parked up and exploring. Bed logging seems solid atm with 3.21, and the problem with most ships is, they are not meant for that type of relaxing gameplay. Yeah i know of, and have the 400i/600i, but they are still limited and with kinda sterile interiors. Im probably asking too much.
Cutter is fine as a starter, but never stuck with it.
