WWF One Night Only took place in the Birmingham NEC Arena on September 20th 1997. The UK Exclusive PPV event featured a WWF Championship match featuring Bret Hart defending against The Undertaker, and it also featured an infamous main event; The British Bulldog vs Shawn Michaels.
SKY TV aired One Night Only on their Sky Box Office service, allowing fans to buy a WWF show on Pay Per View for the very first time in the UK. The WWF had been hyping One Night Only on their weekly television shows meaning this event felt like a "real" PPV for fans in the UK. Many felt the outcome of the main event would be predictable when Davey Boy Smith returned home to defend his European Championship belt, but Shawn Michaels had other plans (both backstage and in the ring) and the ending of One Night Only would end up rembered for being both surprising and controversial.
Other matches at the event include Vader vs Owen Hart, Dude Love vs Triple H and The Patriot vs Flash Funk. This video, as part of the Reliving The War series, looks at the entire event.

In fact, for the famous Wembley Stadium match at Summerslam 1992, Bulldog realized "I'm fooked" after smoking crack with Nattie's dad and he had forgotten every spot planned for the match, so Bret had to call things on the fly & basically carry his brother-in-law through the entire match.

Davey Boy Smith's passion for wrestling may have ended after this night... and it's arguable that Bret's passion may have ended (or at least started to end) just two nights later.

Definitely a huge swerve having Shawn go over Davey in the main event. What I was more surprised about was how Bulldog didn’t at least get some heat back with a Harts run in after the finish and clean house with the Heels scattering. Davey not only loses but gets mocked with Shawn & Co whooping it up.

When i watched the main event for the first time, I started to cry for davey's screams,It was a horrible night for me.
I hated Shawn for years as a kid because of this match.
I was just thinking, " Those dirty stinking hyenas are keeping us from a new reliving the war." Then here we are. I just wanted to let you know, this started as a random recommendation for your NWO video. I watched it for nostalgia and now have literally watched all your videos in the span of a month. Thanks for the vids and I'm ordering a horseman business mug for the office.

according to Hart in his book, this night really messed with Davey's head.... and you literally just said it in the video LMAO.. never mind.
Of course it did. Right up to an hour before match time, Bulldog still thought he was going over, hence the prematch dedication to his terminally ill sister Tracey, whom he escorted to ringside. She didn't even live to see her big brother's own failed 1999 comeback, anyway, so Bulldog, by all rights, should've won on this night, at the very least for ethical/moral reasons.

Aka Chaz (formerly Headbanger Mosh [and the less said about Beaver Cleavage, the better]) & "damn it" (especially given the Droz accident, although the tattooed ex-footballer known for upchucking on command & being Hawk's enabler during the tasteless storyline emulating Mike Hestrand's real-life fall off the wagon doesn't hold any ill will towards the former Nation member for his paralysis, since he essentially injured himself, seeing as how he wore a mesh shirt that made it difficult to grip him in order to execute the Running Powebomb signature correctly, so naturally, it all went wrong as a direct result) D-Lo Brown, wearing baggy workout pants as ring gear & studded jackets and hjabs/turbans as entrance attire.

I just love how you pinpoint those moments where our beloved wrestlers are either hammered, smashed or just "tired". Please don't ever stop. I laughed so hard at the Bulldog drooping eyelid still, mine does the same when I'm "tired".

Hearing Vince McMahon refer to “Ravishing” Rick Rude as the Insurance Man is worth watching the PPV from start to finish.
Went to this event back in the day and loved every minute of it.
Crazy how this series is so influential, that so many wrestlers are doing their own triple chinlock. Be that as they want their own time on WB, or just as a tribute. Truly an iconic series

British Bulldog really should have retained the European title that night. Definitely looked like Shawn Michaels pissed off a lot of people in the arena when he took the title from him.

Bulldog was supposed to win the title back from Shawn at the next British Pay-per-view but Bulldog left the company before that could happen.

I think most people in 1997 were expecting HBK to win, I don’t see how this was unpredictable at all. Bulldog was in the UK but the WWF has a history of people losing in their hometowns. They should have figured out a creative way of Bulldog going over but getting heat on DX.

Shawn won the IC title from Bulldog in 1992.. Won the 1995 Royal Rumble with Bulldog in the final 2... Won the 1996 Rumble with Bulldog in the final 4... Successfully defended his WWF title against him in May and June 1996.. Won the Tag Titles from Bulldog/Owen in 1997... Won the Euro title from him here.
Other than Hogan > Savage, there might not be a more one sided feud in wrestling history!

Part of me has often wondered if that was at least part of the reason Shawn hated Bret did he hold getting his first tag title away from him against Bret.

As others have said, I’ve been looking forward to you covering this one and great work in doing so. I went to this event as a 10 year old and still have vivid memories of it now. It was absolute chaos trying to get into the arena, the security guards were checking every one entering as HHH music hit so my mum dragged me and my sister past the guards to get to our seats as Dude was coming out!
HHH’s sweet shin music counter is legendary.
I often forget but love how Mic made an effort to wrestle a different style as each of the 3 faces of Foley. And As Dude he always wrestled more

I remember this PPV from back in the day and later owned it on DVD. It was a decent PPV. With a couple of stellar matches on it. A good treat for the British audience. Not having a live WWF event since Summerslam 92.

90s Shawn Michaels was a beast backstage He was so ruthless that even Kevin Nash said(before he went to WCW) That HBK would have screwed him if he got in his way😮 And they're best friends. Think about that
Shawn Michaels is my favorite wrestler and the European Belt has my favorite design. People might not like this outcome but it made it far more memorable.

I remember as a youngster Vader with Harley Race in WCW and he was unstoppable a real villain - got the same feeling when Brock Lesnar first came into WWE - in fact an identical story. Shame WWE didn't do much with Vader.
Vader was a liability in the ring and after 97, there were plenty of better heels.

To promote this ppv. WWF did a press conference type of event in Brindly place, Birmingham. It featured sunny, hbk and bulldog. I attended even though I was suppose to be representing the school at a football match up. Was worth it for seeing sunny in the flesh as a 14 yr old boy

This Shawn Michaels vs Bulldog match is actually one of my favorite matches. And I originally saw the The Undertaker Bret match as a extra on the tombstone dvd of the undertaker

I was so hyped for this show as a kid. If I remember rightly, WWF cancelled a UK tour the winter before and I think was their only UK show in general that year. But I remember when it was first announced during Raw, with the title match originally going to be between Bret and Austin. That was my favorite feud, so I had to be there (it's a shame Austin never got a title shot at Bret. That was a lost opportunity, but I guess it's all down to timing too). I was 11 and didn't live in Birmingham, so I had a bunch of friends over and had a viewing party instead. What a night - My mam cried at the Bulldog massacre. Awesome video, thanks for the continued ride!

nothing that Bret's over heated rivals, Stone Cold and Jerry Lawler, ever did affected Bret's family as much as Shawn in this section of 97
This channel is really legendary I wouldn’t be surprised if the WWE picks this up one day
I was at this PPV I was on the side opposite the hard cam so not shown, 4 rows back and what isn't picked up on camera was a guy jumping the railing to try and help Bulldog before the Hart Foundation ran down. He was sat right behind me shouting where's the HF and has enough and ran forwards, as soon as he jumped, security speared him to the ground and was trying to still get in the ring, holding on to the bottom rope as security kicked the hell out of him, I think because people could see the beating this guy was getting it stopped others running in cus seriously the crowd was absolutely near rioting with Shawn.
On a side note, the NEC planned this event horribly and we were queuing to get in for hours and didn't get to our seats until after the Dude Love/HHH match had started.
