These were mainly regular army men from the early years of Ww1. They seemed to accept the brutality of the war in a very matter of fact way, the way soldiers were expected to in that era. The accounts from the the new army citizen soldiers and conscripts later in the war have a very different mood.

I am a Brit and used to often work in the Somme area, Normandy etc. I've stood on crisp mornings by small shrines that were there in WWI and WWII. I imagined Tommies praying there before battle. The saddest thing about the wars is that it caused good people to behave as badly, or worse, as the Germans in order to beat them and liberate the lands. To become evil to win. This rarely gets told and I think is one of the highest costs. 'Lest we forget'.

That's a fact. If they were to teach history they would find the USA has been a champion of countries seeking freedom from tyranny. And without the USA Hitler would have prevailed. "YEAH but the Americans had slaves!!!".. Took a civil war to make it right. If there is a disaster in the world you can bet the USA would offer help.

I must defend the Germans -- the angry tone of some of these authors demands it. Isn't the saying, ``all's fair in love and war?'' I mean, it is not for the English to defend themselves, after things they did in India, to a force possessed of lesser technology, which is what everyone but the Germans were in WWI. There was no Geneva Convention at this time, although I am sure there were other conventions. That being said, I can better see now how the Germans ended up being the brunt of such a cruel document as the Treaty of Versailles. It was up to the English command to have gathered some damn intelligence, for god's sake -- man, have some intelligence and pride! Make sure you read Sun Tzu's great work!

    • @thomasjamison2050

If you like the Germans so much and enjoy studying their thinking, you should really read Hans Delbruck's "Art of War" in four volumes. An excellent work of scholarship, and personally, I always like to remember in Mel Brook's "Frankenstein", the name of Hans Delbruck is on the jar that Marty Feldman drops before he takes the jar marked "Abnormal."
