Hello. Please read the journal written by union soldier, John Haley! It's a day by day account of the war, actually witnessed by him. It's filled with events not in any history books! I hope you do read it, and if so, please write me back.
I absolutely appreciate the fact that "ordinary" people who lived through an experience like this took the time to write a book. Without politics or embellishment for glory sake. Perhaps not as sexy as the publishers would like but it's honesty and attention to detail is refreshing! Absolutely loved it. When Leander recounts the statements made by men who use G-d d--n offensive language I have to laugh and wonder what his thoughts would be of the language (I dare use that word) of the modern day Marine at a war! I came home dropping F bombs every other word. Thanks for this recording!! God bless the men & women who sacrificed so much during this horrible time
I was just at Gettysburg on all parts but at devils den and Pickets charge I had a overwhelming feeling of sadness for these men knew dam well they were gonna get mowed down and they still did it.

What a dedicated young soldier, he couldn't even walk but didn't want to leave his fellow soldiers. Compare that to many today. Now I do consider this war and most other wars we have fought unnecessary, but people used to be exceptional.
Once I began listening, I could not walk away until I finished! Beautifully written and accurate description of the time (Civil War/abolition). I hope to find more pieces such as this online from the same time period. Great book for a HS Junior or Senior, as well as collegiate underclassmen.
Sam Watkins, Co. Aytch (H) - I forget the whole title off the top of my head but I highly recommend it if you enjoyed this, but I'd be willing to bet you've probably discovered it if you've found this. Nothing else I've been able to find quite reads the same as this and this still remains my favorite read from the era, even if it isn't the most excitement filled option, something about it just really resonates with me and I just adore it.
We have the Bible, & yet there is much disdain for one another. Despite saying, "the two greatest commandments are love God with all your heart, soul, mind, strength. & 2nd, love your neighbor as thyself. All other commandments hinge on these two." We follow neither!!! & those that claim they don't need a belief in God to be a good person only to be nice to neighbor borrow this principle FROM GOD, YET EXCLUDE & REJECT GOD, the very God that GAVE us the commandments whom the atheists chastise & reject. If you are nice to your 'neighbor' without giving glory & belief to God, you worship YOURSELF. you give YOURSELF GLORY. How do ppl not comprehend this basic concept? God have mercy on us all! 🤦♂️✝️
Dont forget about the author and soldier fighting in this war and writing harrowing stories about his experience fighting and surviving it, the author and fierce soldier Ambrose Bierce.
At about 8 min into this reading when the author mentioned that the Union loss of the Battle at Bullrun was perhaps a good thing because if the Union had won that battle the war may have ended and slavery would have continued and the souths desire to break away from the union would cause another war to be fought by another generation, perhaps his son's. I have never heard of that scenario before. It just hit home that history could be so significantly different today.
@Phil Silverman CSA fired first....because the USA kept armed forts on every entrance to every river entering the nation of CSA...No nation on the globe would tolerate this. Imagine the USSR keeping missiles on Staten Island and Alcatraz in 1961.🤣
@Phil Silverman Slavery didn't just magically end when/because the union won the war. The thirteenth amendment was passed deep into the war. A lot of support for the thirteenth was drummed up due to the idea that it would be the nail in the coffin of the South as they were all but beat and their morale and economy had been eroded down to almost nothing. A lot of public support, even in the north, only existed for the thirteenth due to the notion that it would end the war. Plenty of people in the Union were opposed to ending slavery, if not for the devastation wrought by the war. The idea of the North being full of do-good abolitionist people sacrificing for the moral righteousness of ending slavery was somewhat of a myth, although there were a lot of those people. If the war ended fast and the South rejoined the union, the amendment might not have been ratified by the needed amount of states to become law or the issue may have stirred up a whole new war. The war did not start with the idea of "we gotta free the slaves" or "we gotta keep our slaves" depending on the side, not even close. Lincoln himself said if he could end the war without freeing a single slave and preserving the union he would. It was so much more complex than just Fight > Win War > Slavery vanishes > Everyone is happy.
@@podunkest For the common people's views, what you say is no doubt true. Few but the wealthy, industrialists in the north and plantation owners in the south understood the stakes. And of course the politically astute. The issue was the growth of the nation and the expansion of slave or free states which would sway the electoral balance one way or another and settle the issue one way or another sooner or later. Too much money and power were in the line, in various established forms of exploitation to leave it all to democratic whims or chance. War was both expedient to resolve the issue and as all wars made money for various factions and mongers so there was that made conflict inevitable.
Stillwell's description of Shiloh is so visceral. I can imagine the dread of seeing a rebel flag for the first time in combat, and coming across the corpse of a dead rebel stopped in the moment he died with a vicious open-eyed glare and tobacco stained teeth. The sight of a dead enemy with all of their idiosyncrasies on display like that is profound. Those were the remains of someone who was trying to kill him. Someone whose entire life isn't even remembered now because they died such a long time ago. I imagine it had to have felt similar to seeing a dead poisonous snake or a man eating shark. Scary even in death.
3:08:07 Those silly Southern women! Little did they know the Confederate monetary system would collapse and the Northern greenbacks would be sought after even in the South...
I would have like to have heard the same historical account as written by a young Leander Stillwell instead of a much older Leander. I suspect this story would be told differently by Leander in his youth.
6:38 Compulsive attendance to worship services... They were dancing around that that when I joined in 1980 - at least on our 1st Sunday in the Army. We got the choice of church or a VERY miserable work detail. Of course people chose church. The intention may well have been mere familiarization with the religious functions/support/help available to the brand new soldiers (trainees) instead of pushing religion on us as it wasn't repeated the next week. I find it interesting that the resentment felt and expressed by Stillwell were pretty much the same that we trainees felt about the situation. There is a very real line there that must be observed and that chaplain might have caused some serious problems in the ranks of that Union Army.
1:43:00 - 1:46:07 reminds me of how things are going today. Even then they knew how important the Constitution and the United States of America really is in the grand scheme of history. Eternal shame on all traitors and those who seek to destroy this great nation.

Excellent book, however his memory is much better than mine when I was a soldier in the army and shipped to Vietnam in 68/69 for I've tried as hard as I could to forget all things including officers names. Unfortunately for me something that is equal to this writing is every fire fight I was ever in. As they say War is hell❗That my friends is a understatement for all who have found themselves in uniform and weapons. Each war on our own land or foreign is different. Its not just the killing of others, but the trying of staying alive from those who are making it a life time objective to send your ass to hell as quickly as possible.. I must add my hat goes off to the soldiers that had the misfortune of finding themselves in the Civil War and killing thier nieghbors,or being killed by the same. Soldiers fight in any war because simply they are told to. Most of us are not really sure why any war must be fought,, but surely it must be necessary. I've come to the conclusion that soldiers are given the excuse we are fighting for freedom of others or for our own. A bunch of flag waving and parades,, SURELY we would need some politicians to convince the public as well as our selves that war was the only answer. And of course we did not do anything wrong to cause this new war. As old age creeps it's way over the once youthful mind and body of this Army L. R. R. P. Which after researching,, find out that these places are owned by the people to whom we are sent to fight. Our government brings them to our country and set them up with a business, a home, college for their children etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc. Now explain to me how that could happen. I'll explain how it happens, because liberals have been able to take over our country while the fighters are off getting killed. If we don't change this country from being taken over,, we better stay home and fight the politicians and their leadership. IT has been said many years ago that America will be taken over by the inside out and they never even fire a shot. GO TO THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS, STAND UP AND TALK ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE TEACHING OF YOUR CHILDREN. ITS EITHER THAT OR YOUR CHILDREN ARE GOING TO BE RAISING YOUR GRANDCHILDREN EXACTLY WHAT YOU DON'T WANT THEM TO BE TAUGHT AND AMERICA WILL BE TAKEN OVER BY THE LIBERALS. IF YOU THINK THINGS ARE BAD NOW,, JUST WAIT. DON'T YOU YOUNG MOTHERS AND FATHERS SEE WHAT OUR GOVERNMENT IS DOING. THESE POLITICIANS ARE NOT WORKING FOR YOU, YOU MY FRIENDS ARE WORKING FOR THEM. THEY HAVE THE BEST OF EVERYTHING AND YOU HAVE BARELY ENOUGH TO SURVIVE. LOOK AT WAGES, HEALTH CARE, RETIREMENT ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC. YOU HAVE GOT TO STOP TRUSTING POLITICIANS, THEY ARE THE ENEMY. DON'T PUT IT OFF ON THINKING SOMEONE ELSE WILL TAKE CARE OF IT. YOU HAVE TO BE PART OF THE GROUPS THAT TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK. FOR GOD'S SAKE PEOPLE WAKE UP TO REALITY. FIRE THESE POLITICIANS AND PUT IN OFFICE,, HONEST GOD FEARING PEOPLE WHO ARE CAPABLE OF DOING RIGHT THINGS FOR AMERICA,, AND NOT WHAT PUTS MONEY IN THE POLITICIANS POCKETS. OLD FIGHTERS LIKE MYSELF ARE ON OUR WAY OUT OF THIS WORLD,, YOU YOUNGER PEOPLE ARE THE ONLY HOPE FOR AMERICA. MAKE US LOOKING DOWN ON YOU FROM HEAVEN,, AND YOUR FAMILY RIGHT NOW AND GRANDCHILDREN IN THE FUTURE,, SAY MY GREAT GRANDPARENTS SAVED AMERICA AND THEY FOUGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM. I SURE HOPE YOU WHO READ THIS, STAND UP AND DON'T LOSE THIS FIGHT. BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T,, YOU'RE PUTTING YOUR CHILDREN AND EVERY CHILD BORN AFTER YOU HAVE LOST THIS WAR,, IN PRISON CAMPS. WHILE POLITICIANS HAVE PUT US IN WAR AND MONEY IN THEIR POCKETS AND CHANGE THE LAWS OF OUR GREAT NATION, THEY WILL BE IN CHARGE OF EVERYTHING IN THE FUTURE.

I get you. There's a place quite near where I live, the name of which is spelled, "Mobindry." However many locals do not pronounce it as it is spelled, they pronounce it as, "Mobinbry."
I moved to Macon, GA in '73. The county to the south is named Houston. Of course I called it HEW-stun and was quickly corrected as to it being HOW-ston. Where I live now there's a town a bit south called Ladoga. I had to make sure how it was pronounced before I said it. Luh-DOE-guh, not LAH (as in cat) doe-guh as in the Russian-Finnish lake.
Very good. Today it would be, like we ate breakfast and the we like charged the hill and we like got shot at. They spoke like poets back in those days. We lost all of that now.
also i was born right across the river from Cairo Il and Know people that are not familiar with the two say it like the city in Egypt but it’s its pronounced Like this Kare-o , pronounce it like the word care with an O

YOU PEOPLE CAN STILL STOP THIS IF YOU ARE ABLE TO GET OUR ASS OFF THE COUCH AND GO TO THE SCHOOL WHERE OUR CHILDREN GO AND FIND OUT WHAT THEY ARE BEING TAUGHT.

Chapter 6 2:51:52
The town of Bolivar is pronounced ball-iv-er. Flawless reading really and good book. I just know this area and know how it is pronounced by everyone.
Enjoyed that i did
