In the two, three years of listening to this book, on - off, it's been a grounding space for me especially after difficult periods in my life. After because during challenging moments I'm usually too deep in the pits to listen to any logic. I'm very grateful for it. I love philosophy and discovering this has been a godsend. To think that he was an emperor and a warrior most of his life and he literally spent his life facing death and betrayal and still had this mentality to basically say, don't worry so much about life, just do your best and accept that which comes - that's amazing. Amazing because in the modern world , we barely face survival struggles like they did back then. At best, it's your partner betraying you or your boss upsetting you, at worst it's death or sickness of a beloved; and yes they try us. His words really put things in perspective for me. I love many lessons in here. I love when he advises to quit praying for things but to simply be grateful of what you have and pray to be content with that; or when he says, it doesn't matter whether fearful of death or complaining of life or proud of your achievements, we will all be forgotten by the next century; the best you can do is be nice and do your best. I listen to it during my morning drives to work and I've been re-listening over time. Very poignant lessons. Grateful for this and for the audio reader . Thanks

I don't think that's true. I think that it seems that way, from an outsider's perspective. You yourself likely know how hard it can be to express the full scope of your thoughts and feelings to other people. This goes both ways.
@sandpiperBe careful not to romanticize the past too much. The average person wasn't exactly smarter back then than they are today. It's easy to look back and see the best, while seeing only the worst in the now and future.
@@nickanthropocene6502 of course we’re smarter than the avg person back then. I think his point is speaking relatively. Relatively speaking the avg intellect back then was much higher than ours is in todays society. There’s a much wider gap between the avg class and the smarter people now then there was then. And that’s not an accident is his point. The higher ups in our society want that gap to keep widening. They want us (the majority) to continue being dumbed down. Where back then they’re anted everyone to strive to be the smartest they could be.
“Frame your thoughts like this-you are an old person, you won’t let yourself be enslaved by this any longer, no longer pulled like a puppet by every impulse, and you’ll stop complaining about your present fortune or dreading the future.”
My father gave me this book my freshman year of high school. Since then I have read this book many times. Especially, times in my life when I felt like my life was out of balance or not in control. This book was very valuable during my deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The things that I saw and carried out were put into a great perspective and the wisdom taken from those times!
My Gram gave me a double volume of the Meditations with the writings of Epictetus,I still have those works,re-read them often and have encouraged all of my children to do the same,it has served them all well and they have in turn given these writings to their children. A gift from my Gram from 60 plus years ago have borne much fruit.
It used to be until circa 1960. In every grammar school in the UK but with the dumbing down of the education system and the introduction of the comprehensive system in the name of egalitarianism we have lost such philosophical learnings. Ahem !
My life changed a couple years ago, just by listening and studying stoicism. It’s the only thing that makes sense in todays world. “Spend no more time discussing what a good man is, be one”.
I have to thank you for this and your summary of the Meditations. Back in August, I began looking into stoicism, and listening to this video at work convinced me to adopt the philosophy into my life. Shortly after, in the span of 2 weeks, I had to put my cat to sleep, and my grandma died the day before she was scheduled to start chemotherapy 10 miles away. I was closer to my grandma than anybody besides my dad, and that cat was the closest thing I've had to a child. In my younger years, I probably would've spiraled into depression. But I've kept in mind the words, "To bear this worthily is good fortune." I was devastated by losing them, but that's the cost of making connections that make life worth living. Everything seems so clear now; becoming the best person I can be is the only thing that matters, and that's all that I'll ever allow myself to worry about again.
Whenever an adversity arises, reflecting on Marcus Aurelius's ideas and Seneca's are ten times better than a conversing with a therapist, psychologist and anyone who call themselves a counselor.
I read this a few years ago during a tough time of attempting to understand myself ,the world, others, and ofcourse the God/gods. I find myself returning like an Elk returning to his favorite creek. Grateful.
I tend to be a very nervous and anxious person. I've struggled for sometime to find purpose, especially recently. I've only been listening to this for the past couple of days in the morning before work and I already notice a shift in my outlook on life. I know it's probably too early to really understand what's being said here (I'm loosely quoting the passage on not being satisfied with a cursory understanding of a lesson). Thanks for the upload, I stumbled upon this at the right time.
Me too, and I've always struggled with finding my purpose in life beyond a daily life of drudgery in a job I hate for little to no reward And, if it isn't that it's meagre hobbies that only serve to fill up my empty hours Everyday life becomes like a quickening of a lifeless corpse that serves to only turn the wheel of existence
Im on a path of self mastery. And for once im starting to feel good about life. Im starting to aquire good habits. I no longer feel emotional when i watch the news. I want the best for my community. And i do good where i can. I dont lie about myself i have shed my fear of what people might think of me. Today is a new life. And im happy to live it.
Bravo, if more people listened and studied ancient teachings like these. The world would be a better place, only the world doesnt want to know, thankfully we do.
be careful wishing you were different friend. It's okay to want to grow, and be proactive about it, but you can overidentify with it, especially when you're young, and really injure your "soul". You won't realize it until it's too late. Enjoy who you are.
@@DerHammerSpricht Schönes Ding. Ganz genau. While always in the process of wanting to be, people tend to forget that they already are. Slippery slope. Im including myself. Personal change is just everyday being, looked at from afar.

Basicly. Be happy with who you are and don't try to be something you're too small to be. When adversity comes, take it on with a smile as if it were a friend. When victory comes don't celebrate because you only got that which is given to you.
It's human nature to yearn for things that seem to offer richer experiences, whether it be opulence or pleasurable experiences Alas for me to be trapped within a meagre life due to past mistakes with no hope to escape beyond my own death, it makes the sting of hope seem ever more empty
Im on a pursuit of happiness. Im now learning the art of stoicism and other kinds of arts/teachings to find inner peace. While im on it, i realised that there will always be yin and yang in this world. There will always be two sides of the same coin. I learnt that humans is a hero in their story be it good or bad. Dying is inevitable but living is a choice. Humans have a mind of their own and its formed by how they were taught, raised, heard, see and experience. Everybody is I and I am everybody, just different way of life of me. Always put myself onto other people shoes and never regard my self as a higher being. Always listen not hear. There always a lesson to be learnt. Be open minded and aware of my own doings as it will have an impact in myself and others. My thoughts become my words, my words become my actions, my actions become my habit, my habit becomes my attitude, my attitude becomes my future. I learnt that sometimes to have something good, it needs to be done by evil actions. The world is both fcuked up and beautiful. We are being fed by temporary happiness that it makes us forget about how strong, intelligent and willing we are. Lastly, i realised that if i can't change myself... What makes me think i can change an individual or the world. I hope everyone is having a good day or night and to always use the time wisely. Stop having the mindset "Oh, i can just do it later", it will never happen. Time is going forward faster than you might think. We live in an illusion where the word "Present" is something to be taken lightly. Past can be a day ago, a week ago, a year ago while the Future can be a day later, a week later, a year later but the Present is just a second which is NOW and it has just passed. "If you wait to be ready, you will be waiting for the rest of your lives".
Wow I love the knowledge you have gained in your pursuit of happiness great message would you mind sharing some of the books or podcasts or articles you've been learning from please.
Its funny how you put that quote in at in the end after you say that you are in the "pursuit" of happiness and peace. Happiness and inner solace cannot be persued as an obtainable goal because it only ensues and is something you can't persue

Meditations, next to Letters From A Stoic by Seneca, Epictetus' Art of Living and various works of Cicero fundamentally changed my life. Stoicism makes so much sense to me. It's a daily exercise. The voice work brings this to life! Masterfully done.

No matter how far we advance, there will always be forbidden truths and tough questions that humans will perpetually contend with every consecutive generation. Marcus speaks with the wisdom of a man who has tackled these elements of life quite deeply and has come to many conclusions after a preponderance of consideration.
He wrote many of his books in my hometown of Sremska Mitrovica (Sirmium) . The entire modern city was built on top of the ancient city, sadly. So much history is beneath the streets, never to be discovered.. Thank you for the upload! Greetings from Serbia.
One of the few books that's worth reading over and over again. IMO, re-visiting 15 to 20 very impactful books is much more valuable than trying to read every new subject.
I found that reading this out loud while listening to it out loud keeps me focused. So far I am able to connect psychology with this philosophical wisdom.

@@stumpedsuper2014 I was responding to michael toner saying "Sexist!". Obviously stoicism is for everyone, but I hate all those frustrated women coming out of the woodwork all the time when it comes to language. Especially all the pronoun bullshit has rustled people's feathers. Everytime this group of entitled not-doing-anything-but-be-frustrated people thinks of something new to annoy society with, they're coming closer to people not accepting their bullshit anymore. They are the minority amongst minorities, so maybe they should learn where their place in society REALLY is. (BTW: i'm a minority as well, I know what I'm talking about);
This is at a real nice pace and easier to follow, since his works require pauses and reflection to ponder his words, well, at least for me. I like how his opening works are recognitions to his previous teachers and the knowledge they passed on to him, life lessons and acknowledgment of others It was excellent he took counsel and input from those around him. Maximus had some good teaching and word for the Emperor in Book 1, 15. I enjoy the ruins and stoneworks of once great palaces or theaters in the video. Many thanks!
If only my generation could hear these words for what they truly are, when a great mind professes such a brilliant understanding of the world around them. It allows one to furnish ones mind with new possibilities.
For the last 35 years I have appreciated "The Great Books of the Western World" 56 volumes by Encyclopedia Britannica, containing some of the Stoics and some of the top literary influencers of Society and Culture. Glad to see these audio books are available.
There are some things I deeply disagree with, and I don't see stoicism as a philosophy I would support, BUT after experiencing the ultimate betrayal that a friend and a lover can inflict on a man, I spent years trapped in thoughts of vengeance, torture, and murder. Stoicism has helped me to move past it, and I think I may be able to retire one day into internal tranquility. Thank you
I used to reject stoicism too because I didn’t want to let go off my girl but when she left I had to choice but to embrace it and it’s helped a lot. Sometimes we reject such teachings because we hold on too tight to certain things but the fact is we came to this world with nothing n so we shall leave with nothing and that is okay.
Stoicism is 85 % the way to live our lives. Had people good guidance, modern posturing gurus wouldn't be necessary. Kudos for the work! Marcus Aurelius was amazingly fascinating.
@@patriciatoth7715 Pretty sure every ancient philosophy course out there includes stoicism, lol. It's not like it's some obscure esoteric teaching or something.

Thank you for this video and thank you Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. I know this is just a TH-cam comment and it seems silly for me to comment this, but for me these meditations have helped me so much. I would say it’s hard to be stoic or to live stoically, but what is my simple life compared to what he faced. Yet I still find myself struggling at times to try and live by many of these principles. I strive on because there is but one way to go ever forward.
I've listened to this about ten times to go to sleep to, and about five times during the day. Powerful wisdom. I now have the book on my shelf too. Thank you for this timeless collection of profound insights, delivered to me nearly 2000 years after written. It's simply incredible that so much of what he was trying to learn has such value after so much time has passed. It's as though the words were written yesterday. This tells me something sobering about human nature; we have changed in so many ways, yet remain confronted and often imprisoned by the same internal struggles faced by our distant ancestors.
@@mablesfatalfable6021 As I originally mentioned, many aspects of human behavior haven't changed in 2000 years. There are stories of great thinkers such as Plato being confronted often by very small-minded people who only tossed insults and never attempted to engage in constructive dialogue. Perhaps some of these simpletons were your ancestors?
You should do audiobook narration for business. You've got this totally mastered. Absolutely the best reading I've heard outside commercial audiobooks. Perfectly clear and easy to follow. Fits the subject like a glove.

MARCUS AURELIUS (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus) (121-180 A.D.) One of the greatest emperors in Roman history and one of the most profoundly intellectual monarchs in western civilization; ruled from 161 to 180. Marcus Aurelius was born in Rome on April 26 , 121 , to a political active and wealthy family. His grandfather , Annius Verus , was a member of the senatorial class , a praetor , and three times a consul . His parents were Annius Verus and the wealthy Domitia Lucilla , although he knew his father only briefly , for Annius died when Marcus was barley old enough to begin his education (124) . He was given to the care of his grandfather for his training.
Yea , it was somewhat Plato's utopia came through when he wrote about a philosopher king . Marcus Aurelius along with Augustin were definately the best emperors and smartest . I would include Hadrian there too
Yes, he was one of the few emperors who actually got down to things. He was a competent and practicing General and wad known as one of the five 'good' emperors. Oddly, his son was Caligula - one of the most mindlessly psychopathic people who ever lived.

Hahaha .... true😂😂
I don't think that's true. I think that it seems that way, from an outsider's perspective. You yourself likely know how hard it can be to express the full scope of your thoughts and feelings to other people. This goes both ways.
@Snakejüce Please don’t tell me you’re a conspiracy theorist.

It used to be until circa 1960. In every grammar school in the UK but with the dumbing down of the education system and the introduction of the comprehensive system in the name of egalitarianism we have lost such philosophical learnings. Ahem !
Anyone else listening and falling asleep, only to have the meditations said in your dreams. Really serene feeling

Stoicism is a little silly, to be honest. It is a flawed belief system as it overestimates the value of virtue to fill the empty void of existence.
Basicly. Be happy with who you are and don't try to be something you're too small to be. When adversity comes, take it on with a smile as if it were a friend. When victory comes don't celebrate because you only got that which is given to you.

" It is ridiculous not to escape from one's own vices, which is possible, while trying to escape the vices of others, which is impossible."

Its funny how you put that quote in at in the end after you say that you are in the "pursuit" of happiness and peace. Happiness and inner solace cannot be persued as an obtainable goal because it only ensues and is something you can't persue

This is at a real nice pace and easier to follow, since his works require pauses and reflection to ponder his words, well, at least for me. There are some things I deeply disagree with, and I don't see stoicism as a philosophy I would support, BUT after experiencing the ultimate betrayal that a friend and a lover can inflict on a man, I spent years trapped in thoughts of vengeance, torture, and murder. I used to reject stoicism too because I didn’t want to let go off my girl but when she left I had to choice but to embrace it and it’s helped a lot.
