    I know this sounds cheesy, but I am glad they kept Patrick Warburton's character in the Soarin' revamped version.

    I've always enjoyed the original film a bit more, even though it was weird to be traveling to California. You should do a video on Disney's America, it's where the concept of Soarin was originally planned to be!

    I do like some aspects of the new one - The Great Wall scene is awesome and how there is a break between segments. However, I enjoyed the old film much more. Plus the orange grove scent was such an homage to Horizons.

    Did you know the Disneyland segment at the end of the original version was filmed during a cast member holiday party? I was there. They didn't normally have parades for it so I was confused as to why there seemed to be one this time. Also, all night, there was a helicopter flying back and forth. At some point I got so curious about it I asked a cast member if they knew what was going on. Sure enough, that helicopter was filming the final scene.

    Good god, Patrick Warburton may have only one voice, but he freakin' owns it like so few other voice actors can. Nice video! I'd go to Epcot on my days off just for Soarin' when I worked the WDW College program back in 2005. The smell of citrus always got me...

  • @nicolebrowne1433
    @nicolebrowne1433 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If you guys miss the smell of the original Soarin, go to Target and buy the candle Coastal Linen! It smells just like Soarin at the end when the orange, pine and ocean smells combined 😍 burn that and listen to the soundtrack for the best experience!

    My daughter now says this is her favorite ride at Epcot (it used to be Test Track, but she's decided she favors scenery over thrills, I guess).
    The main objection I've heard to the new movie is that there are more shots with stark verticals in them, like the Taj Mahal and the Eiffel Tower, which really brings out the spherical distortion in the image if you're not seated right in the center sweet spot. I definitely saw that, especially with the Eiffel Tower, but it didn't ruin the ride for me.

    • @ExpeditionThemePark
      @ExpeditionThemePark  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The thing for me is the Taj is clearly all CGI and i find it very distracting.

    • @atat67e
      @atat67e 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, the CGI is what really gets me more than anything. Totally takes me out of it. Also, I'm Californian, so I'm biased towards the old film as is.

    • @michaelthebishop5290
      @michaelthebishop5290 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      California is almost unanimously considered superior. Not gonna lie, I'm confused why Expedition Theme Park did not address this. I have yet to meet a person who has said Soarin' Around the World is better. Even if it's more fitting to EPCOT as a whole.
      PS. The least they could've done was keep Soarin' Over California in the park known as CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE!!

    I first got word of Soarin' coming to Epcot in 2002 when I worked at my downtown IMAX Theatre as a projectionist. The company's Sonics DTAC technician stopped by for the annual maintenance and I briefly mentioned Horizons that used to have the Omnimax (IMAX Dome) projection system and wished those machines could be re-used somehow. He then mentioned to me that Disney purchased two units for Florida and that's when I knew something (eventually Soarin') was coming soon.
    An Imagineer that posted on the old Intercot Forums named Kevin (went by username Mufasa) mentioned that the filming was actually done using cameras from IMAX's competitor, iWerks Entertainment; but their projection system couldn't achieve the strobing speed for the higher frame rate for 15 perf 70mm film. IMAX could (and patented) that ability which is why they ultimately went with IMAX's HD film transport.
    During my very, very brief CM days at Soarin' before the digital world refurb, there would be brief downtimes required by maintenance to clean the IMAX machine a few times per day. This was likely because the field flattener glass that flattened the vacuum-held film print would get dirty over time making very small objects like hair or dust look like giant bugs and snakes on the screen. There were wiper bars that would help keep the flattener glass clean but overtime would build up and need to be cleaned and/or replaced every few hours; hence the occasional maintenance downtimes between dispatches.
    During a 3rd Shift Projection Maintenance Job Interview at Epcot, I was fortunate enough to check out the IMAX machines for theatre A. It looked like a souped-up original IMAX GT film (with the notorious 15KW Xenon lamp inside of it) transport with a climate-controlled looping cabinet with the head and tail of the film spliced together for continuous shows. The cabinet was smaller than I thought it would be and the film was very tightly guided along numerous columns of film rollers.

    Live in Orlando; used to work at Disney World, and I much preferred the original version of "Soarin'". The new one isn't terrible though, and I met a lot of guests, and was friends with co-workers who thoroughly enjoyed the new version. I love the classics though. Another great video. Please keep up the great work; huge fan!

    Actually surprised you didn't mention that the Taj Mahal Is 100% CGI, as they were refused permission to film it legitimately.

    • @michaelthebishop5290
      @michaelthebishop5290 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There's actually plenty of scenes that are pure CGI. Soarin' Around the World is a lazy pile of shit honestly.

    • @Tsumami__
      @Tsumami__ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      michaelthebishop the mechanics of the ride were innovative at the time it was opened, but the concept is pretty lazy.

    • @michaelthebishop5290
      @michaelthebishop5290 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. I still think if they had just updated the California version (maybe sequence changes like Star Tours) and didn't go for jump scare transitions, the ride would still hold up. Unfortunately, Disney didn't.

    • @gpturner0924
      @gpturner0924 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@michaelthebishop5290 CGI is not lazy shit. Do you know how difficult it is to get an accurate model in CGI? It would have actually been lazier if they went and shot the real places... More authentic, yes, but nowhere near as difficult.

    • @michaelthebishop5290
      @michaelthebishop5290 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gpturner0924 WOW! You missed the whole point. First, using CGI doesn't make it good. I think it makes it worse because I know what I'm staring at is fake. If you don't agree with that, great. But more importantly, EVEN IF the Taj Mahal scene was shot in real life, it doesn't excuse the ridiculous distortion, the obnoxious jump cuts, the fact the ride bites off more than it can chew (like 16 places in such a vast world) and the fact that at the end of the day, it's a bunch of disjointed location show in no particular order.
      And I love how fans of the ride love to rebutt "ask for B1" as if it's reasonable for every individual to do that every cycle.

    My mom absolutely adores this ride. Last time I went on it, I was front row and had a bad panic attack because of how high off the ground I felt. The cast members totally understood, and the people sitting next to me were really kind. I can’t tolerate the heights anymore, but I still think the engineering of it all is super clever and really interesting!

    Tony Baxter's original concept for The Land pavilion was to show off the beauty of different biomes/environments of the world, and was going to include a "gliding" type of ride on a suspended track where you look down upon the "land". It was changed to a more food/agricultural theme right before the construction phase, when the planned sponsor (a logging company) dropped out and Kraft came in to sponsor the Pavilion.
    So while it's very fair to say that Soarin' doesn't quite fit the *current* theme of the pavilion, it's exactly the kind of attraction that I feel fits the true intent of The Land. :-)

    We got to ride the last day of Soarin’ (California) and then we went the next day we saw the first day of Soarin’ Over the World. Soarin’ is my husband’s favorite ride at Disney. It was also a day or so after the Pulse night club shooting and the day the kid was taken by an alligator. We were at Magic Kingdom the day after he was taken. The hadn’t found him yet and there were boats out looking in the lagoon. It had a really creepy vibe and security was extra tight. There was a ton of press too. When we were checking out of our hotel we met some journalists from Japan.

    I live in California and this ride always makes me emotional, I think it's the sensory overload, but i think it's the soundtrack (music makes me emotional). Do you know if the Soarin Around The World ride has different music? Or is it the same soundtrack. Fun fact the Amusement park across the street from my house was designed by the guy who designed Frontierland at Disneyland. There's so many theme parks here still and some that are gone that you can do a California series of Expedition Theme Park. Like your amazing UK episodes!!! Sorry, I just geeked out. Awwwe, sorry.

    One year, on Christmas Day in 2011, me and my family were in Epcot and we had fast passes for Soarin' for later that day. A cast member asked us if we would give our fast passes up to a family. We were really confused but we did and he guided us back stage to the front of the line and we got front row seats for the next departure. He also gave us a Soarin' certificate that he signed for us saying "Thanks for Soarin' with us".

    Other than passing through Orlando a couple of times in the past year, and stopping at Disney Springs to buy souvenirs for friends, I have not been in a WDW theme park in 20 years. My only connection to Soarin' is from California, and I have not been to Disneyland for closing in on 10 years. Geez, times flies; it seems like not that long ago when I used to go to DL every year. Anyway, lately I have been watching a lot of Soarin' videos here on YT. Even though I have not experience the World version in person, my opinion is that it is inferior to the original. But anyway, I hope I will ride it again in the not too distant future.

    I haven't seen the new version yet, and I have a feeling I'm going to be disgruntled when I do, though I keep telling myself to keep an open mind. The LA scene in the original always kind of cracked me up, though, because yay, traffic! While I of course love Soarin over California, I have to hand it to Soarin around the world of how impressive it is. It took 5 years to film everything for its show, and get all the permissions they could to get those aerial shots. It sucks some stuff has to be done in CG to make up for it but I find Disney imagineering to be completely fantastic. The score is great and the ride is fun. The line... not so much but what can you do 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I think that they need to make a new film about Soarin over North America for DCA, since soarin over the world from a ranger station in the mountains doesn't make much sense. They could bring back some of the california clips and get some new clips of maybe the Appalachians, or parts of Mexico, or somewere up in Canada.

    I don't mind the change to the world over California. The CG is a bit distracting and the best place to sit is middle top row. If I see the edges of screen it ruins the emersion.

    Is the reason why you're doing weekly episodes of expedition Epcot because you like discussing the land pavilion or is it so you can finish future world and do world showcase and/or magic kingdom?

    To be honest the only reason why my family even considers going to EPCOT is because of Soarin’. If it weren’t for the Haunted Mansion and the Hall of Presidents (which I think he only likes it so he could take a quick nap in an AC building and because he knows everyone else hates it) Soarin’ would be my Dad’s favorite ride in all of the Disney parks. The last time we went to Disney my Dad asked if it would be too much to pass on EPCOT. I asked if he would be okay passing on Soarin’ and he immediately changed his mind. Turned out he mistook it with Animal Kingdom.

    I ALWAYS never thought the original fit well with Epcot but worked well for California... but now the new one fits WELL for Epcot but now its ALSO in California.... which makes....... no sense... why not keep California in California?? its one more nail in the coffin for California Adventure being about California.. which it no longer is.

    Lack of must do attractions, especially e ticket, makes Soarin' popular. #Frozenruinseverything. Test Track version 2 is worse than version 1. Mission Space is sickness (orange) or yawn (green) inducing. #BringbackDreamfinder

    • @Tsumami__

      Jason Motsinger I don’t like the movie Frozen, or anything CGI that Disney releases via Pixar, but the Frozen ride belongs in Norway. It doesn’t ruin anything, it’s bringing a large wave of visitors to Epcot. Maelstrom was my favorite ride at Epcot but it was outdated and honestly didn’t teach anyone anything about Norwegian culture. They made a perfect choice replacing it with Frozen.
      Walt never wanted the park to be filled with old decaying attractions. People need to get over rides being replaced that weren’t even built when Walt was still alive and overseeing the construction.
      And sorry but if a little G Force makes you sick, just don’t ride Mission Space. Go ride the people mover in MK. That’s definitely not a gut churner.

    My family has always loved this ride... unfortunately it isn’t my favorite. The California version was MUCH better. The graphics look dated (even the new one). I just can’t justify the wait times. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wait time of less than an hour.
