The History of Test Track | Rise & Fall of Disney World's Fastest Attraction

- For the past 25 plus years, Test Track has been a premier E-ticket attraction at Disney World’s Epcot Park, but it hasn’t always been a smooth ride.
Construction delays, major media production failures and one 17 billion dollar bail out later, I still can’t believe they made it happen!

The construction for the incredible Test Track 1.0 took less time than it took them to put together some planters & Communicore Hall. I will never forget the heat room. Hoping Test Track 3.0 can bring that iconic part of the ride back
My only hope for 3.0 is that the test dummy mascots come back 😭
They said it will be inspired by World of Motion, so hopefully some of the original animatronics and Ward Kimball humor come back
I was on it as a kid in like 99. Definitely the one I remember most from Disney
Knocked it out of the park with this one! Very well done. My hope for 3.0 is better souvenirs! 2.0 was basically a sales gimmick to get a Corvette shirt, whereas 1.0 had awesome "Mickey Test Track" shirts, neat ride car diecasts, and many other fun things. Again, well done
Love these history/ behind the scenes videos. As someone tech/math challenged, I always admire the work of the Imagineers.
Same!! I can handle the Imagine part, but the Engineering is where i get lost 😅
Thank you so much as always for watching 🙏
I broke down on the heat section back in elementary school. We were stuck for about 10 minutes and the lamps were on for half of it. It was real hot, even after the lamps turned off
Absolutely loved this video! I do miss Test Track V1, and hoping V3 pays homage where it's due.
Thank you Will! Part of me wishes they would just change it back to the original test track, but I know that won't happen 😭
Even better, they said the new version will be based on World of Motion.
If the can pull off the humor of WoM, plus the ride system of Test Track it will be a good update.
@@CobraKai63 I love that idea because most of the people including myself who were born after 1996 closure never got to experience it so it gives them a point of view what others who are older got to experience when they went to Epcot during the time when World of Motion was the attraction.
@@Magiclove99Abby I’m probably biased because I only got to see it in ‘93 when I was 7. That was one of the last years all the original Epcot Center attractions were open.
@@CobraKai63 Lucky.
My name is Craig Dennis i watch your new videos all the time and i in joy all of your videos all the time and you have a nice safe day today and you take care today👍👍👍👍👍👍
CRAIG DENNIS!!
@@ForTheLoveOfThemeParksVlogs I don't even know Craig, but because of his self-imposed ubiquity across so many Disney vlogs, I propose you consider giving him a shout out in a future video, Ryan!
These videos have quickly become my favorite to watch. I love all the nostalgia as I personally loved Test Track 1.0 but maybe because that's what I grew up with. You do these videos so well and I hope you continue to do more. Side note, your office is A DREAM.
Thank you, thank you! More videos like this one to come! Some big adventure / history ones in the pipeline as well! Thank you so much for watching! 🙏
I rode this three times during my only trip to Disney World back in 2003. It broke the first 2 attempts right before the big acceleration part into the wall. Sat there for 10 minutes waiting for the ride to continue. Eventually staff came and walked us out a back exit both times. We literally walked through some curtains straight into the gift shop.
Recognizing that you took the time to calculate how much more supportive a Patreon membership is vs a TH-cam ad is proof in the pudding for how much thought you put into your channel, Ryan.
Keep pushing with this mentality and well thought out content!
This channel needs to be at 5 million next year. Great content
Aww thank you so much! I am extremely proud of all my videos and hope that can happen some day 😂🙏
Great video did not expect to see myself near the end 😂🙌
Had to find a way to throw in a surprise Blake where I could 😅
Hi Ryan! Another awesome and informative video in the books! You, my friend, have found your niche!
I've never ridden Test Track, but, as a retired automotive industry prototype participate, I've driven some really cool concept vehicles on proving grounds in the Detroit area.
As always, thank you for bringing us along. I'm a proud pity viewer and follower of your twin sister. 💜
Omg what an amazing connection! That must have been a cool thing to be a part of, hopefully you didn’t run into any trouble with those test vehicles 😅
Thank you as always for the support and plenty more videos in this realm to come 🙏🙏
Gosh, this one hit me with nostalgia - i remember standing in line for 1.0 when i was little... and the excitement of 2.0 when it was released like it was yesterday. Cant wait to see what they do with 3.0
Keep the Disney history videos coming!! Really enjoyed this video.
Thank you!! If you’ve got any suggestions for topics let me know! Got plenty of ideas on the list but there’s always room for more 📝 🙏
@@ForTheLoveOfThemeParksVlogsI think it would be cool to learn about the original idea for Kilimanjaros Safari. Along with how AK was suppose to have mystical creatures. I know AK isn’t your favorite but it’s mines😂.
Hey Ryan, this is Tytus we met at Epcot on the first day of the new Encanto show! It was great meeting you super stoked for more of the informational type videos. Don’t forget to post a few vlogs along the way for the old school pity viewers🫡
Yes! I remember! There will still be big adventure type vlogs (my next video actually), opening days of big stuff and such! But all of the more chill vlogs will be held over on patreon 😔
just trying to plan what’s best for the channel when it comes to production and types of videos that help grow the channel 😅Thank you again🙏🙏
Oh dang I missed the new Patreon! I’ll just hop on that train 🫡
@@TytusIPlanck Oh no no, you're good. I just wanted to clarify where things are headed since I don't want to leave anyone waiting for the standard vlogs over on this channel 😅
Appreciate the support regardless of where its at 🥹🙏
Absolutely ruined my night, I didn't know 2.0 was gone XD. Awesome video though
Loving these history style vlogs, really interesting and you must put a lot of effort into researching them so thank you for sharing and can't wait to see what Test Track 3.0 becomes, and what you bring us next!
Superb. Been to all 3 versions. Looking forward to V4. Lotsa love to all from Toronto ❤❤❤
I was in this ride 2012 March and now I'm really happy that I experienced the crash dummy ride. This ride had some charm and was exiting like just a few other rides had in DW Florida.
I'm from Germany and love your Chanel
Such a solid video Ryan, thank you. I rode World of Motion as a kid and appreciate how you called out how so many of the rides at the time were the same story about different histories. I do remember liking the Horizons ride better than WOM. Thanks for your effort pulling this together, excited to see what Test Track 3.0 brings.
Lyndon B Johnson would make sense as the cut out truck driver. He signed into law the motor traffic and motor vehicle safety act, and the highway act around 1966!
But it could be Nixon as he was a major part of Disneyland
/ Disney World history. He also set a maximum speed limit of 55mph during the oil crisis to save on fuel used. He also was recorded talking about airbags being used on cars from one of his infamous tapes. Either way it's a pretty good inside joke lol
Thanks always for all the information and taking your time and energy to do this!
Thank you so much for that awesome blast from the past Ryan. I’m old enough to remember the World of Motion. 😱 I never really liked Test Track in either version because the lines are so long and it used to go down so often (while waiting in the long lines). Keep up the great work!!
Super jealous that you got to ride world of motion, hopefully your review of it was more glowing than some of the ones I featured in this video 😂
Thank you so much for watching, more like this time come in the future!
Phenomenal video. I love history and this did not disappoint. Keep them coming👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
You didn't mention that this ride had two characters, and for the first time, these characters were made specifically for the attraction. Never forget Fletch and Lumpy
So good! I love your vlogs but these history of videos are also fantastic!
Thanks for this video. During my first trip to the USA in 2005 I visited WDW and while visiting Epcot I had several rides on Test Track V 1.0 (day and night). It was one of the strangest, most unique und most fun rides I‘ve ever been on. An absolute great concept and the heat and cold rooms were my highlights beside the speed test. Absolutely loved the ride! Soarin‘ and Mission to Mars were also good rides, but Test Track was my absolute favourite ride at Epcot!
John Michael Higgins is the host of America Says on the Game Show Network. You did a fantastic job with this vlog. I learned so much!
I have yet to catch the show, but I know thats so much of what he's been up to lately. More videos like this to come in the future! Thank you for watching 🙏
I was lucky enough to ride version 1.0 (it was breaking down a lot when i visited WDW) but it was so awesome! Definitely a highlight of my trip! Great video! 😃👍🏻
These are your best type of videos!!! Love this!
Another great video! Brought back so many memories
really enjoy all your The History of videos. You are doing a great job with these, Love the info and the trip down memory lane.
This is the first I’ve seen of your channel Ryan. This is great stuff. I am eating it up… thanks again!❤
Ryan, this may be one of my favorite videos you’ve ever done! Test track is one of my favs and is so nostalgic to me so this brought back a lot of memories. Amazing job 👏
PS I miss TT V1 and wish they’d bring that back too or at least parts of it 😢
Yesssss! What we all needed!! And I haven't even watched the video yet 🤣🤣 I actually have footage of test track 1.0 lolll
test track 1.0 was such a creative and cool experience. Loved hearing this history and loved the easter eggs!!!
There was also a sign on the hill going up toward the truck collision that read “general motor way” and “motion drive” and one more I can’t remember.
dude! you’re so underrated, what a well made and entertaining video!
Nailed it again!! Another awesome video!
I remember this was my favorite ride when i visited the one time in my life back in 2004.
Love this vid, Ryan! Great job. Would love more history videos like this one. Really interesting stuff
Plenty more like this to come soon! Appreciate the support 🙏🙏
@@ForTheLoveOfThemeParksVlogs nice! Looking forward to it. I certainly wouldn’t hate a history of Figment.
This is really good, thank you!
I love the history ones, thank you for making such a great video!
Thank you so much! Put a lot of work into this one and happy to hear that it shows 🙏
Hi Ryan!
Excellent video as always!
👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻
Loved the history if the attraction. I remember when test track opened it would break down all the time and you’d be sitting on the floor of the building waiting for it to start up again. Those waits were often quite long.
Great video! I learned so much! The history of this is fascinating!! As a Disney nerd I love these kind of videos!!
The sad truth.
I’ve never been on Test Track before. I remember standing in front of the ride many times but not getting on it
Great video! Informative, clean and clear, well put together. Surprised it doesn’t have more views!!
Thank you so much! Still a growing channel, so hopefully this one can help me get in front of a few more eyes 😅🙏
Great video Ryan! 🙌
I didn't realize that was a test dummy in the truck in test track 2.0. Good find! 26:23
Great video man! Solid work.
If V3 can have the same “make your own car” gimmick from V2, along with the elements from V1, that would be cool
The history videos are great Ryan!! Keep them coming. I love to pitty watch them 😂 you’re doing a great job!
hahaha thank you for your pity view 🙏
more like this to come in the future! Let me know if you've got any topics you'd like to see covered🙌
@@ForTheLoveOfThemeParksVlogs one on horizons I bet would do really good with the die hard Disney fans. Or how HS was originally going to be another land in Epcot. There’s so many you’ll be busy for a long time. But these videos are great I have I get all my friends to watch them too so that’s like 2 more views for you 😂
This is an epic video! It will be interesting to see what comes out of the reimagine.
Great video!
Man, this one brought back memories. Coincidentally I actually came across my Test Track drivers license from like 2004 the other day
I hope this is your break-through video that will take you to the next level of TH-cam success
And then today’s Disney said screw Epcot and its history. Just throw in IPs and call it a day
Another banger video 🔥 Miss test track 1.0 and the heat room!
Thank you Cam! 1.0 is the GOAT, they've gotta bring it back in the retheme 🤞
These videos are our new favorite. We love the history of the Disney parks and rides. Thanks for spending the time to put these together and keep up the awesome work. We did have one question for you. Where did you get the Epcot jar that was in your video room? Thanks again for the great videos and keep it up. Also please keep up the videos like this they are amazing.
Awesome video! 😎
I'm glad to have rode the original version...and that was back in 2003!
This makes me want to continue my dream of owning a Corvette. I will have one... I WILL!
Was in line around the opening for Test Track 1.0. It started storming and obviously the ride had to close. But no one in the line would leave because of how terrible the storm was. And for 2 hours we got to listen to the SLAM of the test dummies every few minutes. 💀
My dad lifted me over the rail separating one of the automotive zones that had a toolbox on it with a few pictures of families, like a real workshop. I slipped our family’s Christmas picture with the rest of them and it stayed there until the concept was changed and queue was reworked.
That's awesome.
Just got back from Patreon. Officially signed up! Looking forward to seeing more content 😁
Thank you so much Alison!! Appreciate you so much 🙏
Got a really fun adventure video coming up that i know you’ll love 🙌
I'm fairly new to WDW (been going once or twice a year since 2015). I love the current iteration of Test Track and while I'm not a fan of the direction that Epcot is going, I am excited for the updated Test Track.
This is fabulous!
5:44 Robots. I used to work in I.T. at a GM assembly plant. My scope of work sometimes took me through a large area of the plant’s area where nothing existed except robotic arms. It was as fascinating as it was scary. It was scary because sparks were flying everywhere.
"It's not often you see references to old attractions at theme parks."
Take a trip to Kings Island, buddy.
especially for halloween haunt, the tombstones w old rides on them!
Excited for the future of test track!
25 years?!? 😳 Oof, that just made me feel old AF!
really digging these types of videos! I still believe test track 1.0 is the superior version. Hopefully with the refurb, they can find some exciting new ways to update a legendary attraction in my eyes
Couldn't agree more!! Love 1.0 so much! Thank you so much for watching, more videos like this to come soon! 🙏
To give a little insight, I actually asked the Chevrolet salesperson at the end of the ride how the floor setup worked if someone wanted to buy a car. Apparently yes, they have sold cars to people on “more occasions than you’d think.” Basically if someone was serious about getting one of the cars, they had somewhere off site pretty close where they could test drive the vehicle and then subsequently order and pickup the vehicle. From my understanding of what they had told me, they don’t actually have cars at the park for people to buy but the test driving did happen pretty close to Epcot. They were oddly secretive about the whole process though, didn’t get too many details, but it was still cool to hear.
Oh yeah and apparently the sports car of choice they had in that little room before you get to the main show room was manually pushed through that small opening guest leave through. No secret doors, they just put the car into neutral, pushed and steered it very carefully.
it was so sad going from test track in the early 2000s when i was a kid and then going to disney as a 20 something and test track was completely different and honestly worse. I missed those weather tests so much
Huh. I guess I should consider myself lucky to have riden both World Of Motion and The first version of Test Track. Didn't realize I had even seen that much history of Disney in a 15-20 year span.
This video reminded me that I rode World of Motion haha. Great video as always, Ryan! I always like learning the "what went wrong" aspects of Disney. I actually rode Test Track for the very first time last week and...that was a thing that happened. At least I can say I went on it before it closed for refurb!
Super jealous that you got to ride world of motion! Trust me when i say this, test track 1.0 was far better than the most recent version! Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long before the next iteration 🤞
Thank you as always for watching🙏🙏
16:15 OH TRUST ME…. It’s noticeable! HARD! 😂😂😂😂 especially when the actor tries to sound “naturally”
when there’s a quick glitch and has guests move around to trigger the sensor.
You’re an outstanding TH-cam channel.
I recently went to EPCOT for the first time on June and I still regret not wanting to do the 90 minute line.
9:02 Fun fact: This is Richard Jennings. He was a semi popular comedian in the 90s that had a minor role in The Mask with Jim Carrey and his own short lived TV show called "Platypus Man" based on his comedy act of the time.
He sadly unalived himself roughly 10 years after this, partly because of his declining popularity and a little bit of mental health issues.
Great comedian though. If you ever get the chance, go look up his Platypus Man stand up special.
I'm so glad we are getting a better theme to the ride
Great video sir! I work for the company that makes the polycarbonate windows for GMTT!
I remember being there in opening week but the day we were there, there was lightning and the ride had to be stopped due to it not being ground as I remember so everyone stood inside for a long period of time, we gave up eventually so didn't ride on it (me, brother, mom and dad).
I have told you this before and I will tell you again. You need an agent. You have a gift. You are a true talent. Take it to the limit. “To infinity and beyond”.
Idk what an agent will do for him, they are for like acting and modeling jobs
We finally got to visit Disneyworld as kids end of Aug 1997. I was sad that World of Motion was already knocked down but the new Test Track wasn't completed yet. According to all the video ads from the year before it should have been opened. =( We did the Tower of Terror a few times tho the following day.
Went to Disney for this past Jan. Haven't been there since 1.0 and was greatly disappointed that they had removed the hot and cold room and replaced it with quiet and slow parts of the ride
They need to make test track as cool as the radiator springs racers in DLCA
good job! I know I was on WOM but don't remember it as much as Horizons.
I always thought it was Jimmy Buffett in the truck cab. TT2.0 post-show was staffed by a marketing company. The same type of company you would see presenting at an auto-show. TT1.0 was staffed by GM and you could take delivery of a car at the attraction for a period of time. Sale would be facilitated through a local dealer and the vehicle brought to Epcot for delivery. Kind of like if you buy a Corvette you can pick it up at the factory and museum in Bowling Green, KY.
My family and I broke down in BOTH rooms 😂😂😂😂 both were awful, but actually, the cold was worse cuz we were all sweaty 😂😂😂
My main question is, were the heat lamps turning on and shutting off all the time while you were stuck? like was it on a trigger or a timer?
thanks! 😂
@@ForTheLoveOfThemeParksVlogs from what I remember, they were just on us the whole time 😂 but I feel like the heat wasn't as strong as the cold, so the heat was kind of just uncomfortable but the cold was painful 😂
I can't think of anything more American than waiting in line for a ride that simulates driving TO the park.
I am a video editor myself and I can only imagine how much time you put into this. Bravo! 👏
Thank you so much! Lots of time and effort into these edits! 😅🙏
I learned so much! 🎉
This is actually like one of the best comments I could receive and I want to thank you so much 😅🙏
@ForTheLoveOfThemeParksVlogs I didn't even try to be clever, and I still got a heart AND a reply 🫶
No but for real and as always, You have such high quality videos full of new information. Keep em coming! Also, you and "your sister" made camero walk by appearances in my may the 4th video. I didn't know it was you two until i was editing. Oops 😭
Love and miss the World of Motion
Test track 1.0 definitely didn't close in April of 2012 because I went for my first trip to Disney World in 2012 for my graduation gift in May. My mom had a ride photo somewhere of us on Test Track
They also wanted originally for there to be a car testing ground like in Michigan
I have only done Test Track once. I have not had any desire to it after that 1 time. I don't remember the year I rode it either. I do remember that it was either 1999 or 2001.
Glad i got to experience the original
Not sure what the future will hold but test track 1.0 is the best version
