Track Day fun in an old car! MGB tackles Castle Combe. How will it perform?

  • I joined Tim of ‪@CambrianClassicsLtd‬ in his mildly-modified MGB as we did an MG Car Club track day at Castle Combe. My first time, but what fun it proved to be! Definitely not my last visit to a race track. Tim's MGB has been bored out to 2-litres, has Lotus pistons and kicks out about 120bhp. A few handling mods ensure it is a LOT of fun on track. #trackday #classiccars #mg

    The angle of the dangle on the bunch of keys in the dashboard gives you an idea of how hard the car is cornering.

      Which Michelin tyres are on the car? I am running Michelin Discovery tyres in a 295/65R15 94H on my old Volvo 240. I have yet to hear tyre squeal no matter how hard I push the almost stock car. Besides the Made In England tyres the only other upgrade is to the shocks/struts. Monroe Sensatrack all around.

    You were certainly getting much better towards the end, Ian. Once you get into the rhythm, you can float the car along, pretty much in an unstable setup most of the time. I've never tried left-foot braking, but I gather you can dial out understeer using it. I used to love four-wheel drifting right on the limit, tremendous fun, although not always the fastest lap. Well done you two. Great video.

    That is what motor racing used to be about. I have no interest in other forms where the cars are totally devoid of similarities to what is driven on the road apart from looking a little like them. It has become a game of whoever has the most money wins. This was great fun to watch. Thanks Tim and Mr. Hubnut.

Spent my childhood at Castle Combe, my Uncle participated in the local FF1600 championship, won it four times over the 80's and 90's!....these days his son's have taken up the mantle! He's also been an instructor himself (he took an Aryton Senna around when he visited back in the late 80's). So many a Sunday or Bank Holiday Monday watching the racing and walking around that paddock viewing other competitors!! I've cycled around here loads of times on various charity cycle runs! My Grand Parent's ashes are spread over the starting Grid's Pole Position (the joys of my Uncle knowing the owner and grabbing the keys on a couple of occasions!! Living 8 miles away I often here the cars go around on a race weekend or open day!! Great Video! Love a "B" as well, such a great example.

Keep up the great work and enjoy.

    Another top video Ian and Tim. The brake issue might not be so much of an issue. From feedback many years ago track days are notorious for highlighting brake knock off where due to the higher speed cornering conditions the callipers and pads move leaving a wider pad to disc clearance and hence extra pedal travel. With the extra heat in the pads/discs causing brake fade this can feel like that there is a brake problem. It looks like you both had an epic day out in the MG. Many thanks for sharing. I'm more than happy to be corrected if I'm wrong and apologies of course if I am.

    I used to marshal at Castle Combe, mostly at Tower Out, before the chickens(chicanes) were installed to slow the entry into Tower In, thus reducing the scrambles to the bank on the outside. It's not the quickest track, but some of the wriggles make it a great car control learning circuit. Regarding moving your hands Ian, you had your wrists inboard of the steering wheel rim. You want to try to keep your forearms and wrists straight, or failing that your elbows just outboard of the rim. It improves the grip immensly and you drive from the shoulders thus keeping your hands still. However, it's been a while since my racing days ended and I'm jealous, so I'm allowed to be picky. Haha.

    Listening to Ian and Tim talking about the brakes getting hot, for track days would a set of different wheels be any better, the ones that's on the car look great but look restricted in terms of how much air can get to the brakes

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brakes will always get hot during a track session, but the offside was noticeably hotter than the nearside. Would be a shame if the steelies and hubcaps had to be ditched.

      @@HubNutthat is really odd...were the brakes pulling to one side?

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not that we really noticed. Suspect a sticky piston on one side just wasn't fully releasing and caused more pedal travel when you nexf applied the brake.

    I never knew a B series could be so good. Tim must have done a really nice job of building that. I would be interested to know what went wrong with the brakes?

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do hope to report back on the brakes. Tim suspects a sticky piston which failed to release the brake properly (causing the extra heat) and then absorbed some pedal pressure when we reapplied (because the fluid had been sucked back from the piston).

    Great video! Will we be seeing you on more track days now? I love Combe, I've driven it a few times in a car but I've mainly done bike days there and going over Avon Rise into Quarry is a very weird feeling. It's actually harder on 4 wheels I find

    • @HubNut
