- Why I Chose A Pelican Case | Pelican Cargo Case and Mount Review
Cheap, run of the mill Walmart special cases dont cut it. Some people will tell you that you can get something as good as "X" brand for 1/8 of the cost. I'm hear to say that you cant!
Today I am reviewing the Pelican Cargo Case, specifically the Pelican BX55s. These cases are built to last, built to store, and built to mount up and go. I think these are a solid option for those looking to add some lockable storage without all of the bulk and weight of some of the other options out there.
Note that at the time of filming, these cases were listed as 36L. Pelican said that is only to the inside of the lip, the most narrow part of the case. I am guessing this particular case is closer to the 45-50L mark. I will post updated info when I know.

Incredibly well done video and excited to see it on your FJ while you wait for the Taco to arrive. Thank you for trusting Pelican with your gear!
LOVE this case setup!
Funny, first thing I would do is remove all stickers.
Why?
I just mounted the bx140r size pelican on my roof and love it. Figured out I have enough room beside it to possibly fit this size now. Helped a lot with decluttering my trunk area and moving all my recovery gear and tools to the roof.
I bet, that size is a monster! Excited to have mine for this years adventures.
Great video. I'm really in need of storage and this mounting system is perfect for what i need. Roam is great but the mounting system is very limiting.
If it looks cheaper without the sticker, then it will be less attractive to thieves anyway. There are benefits to embracing being low-profile and worrying less about the “roll call” of brands on your truck. 😉
Not really worried about showing off the brand as much as having a big void on there. I bought this case in particular because it will look nice with the blue/black contrast. Showing up to Overland Expos and stuff like I do, people want to know what’s on there.
What he said still stands.
This review is just what I needed!!! Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Stumbled onto this vid while looking for a quality box for my ATV & think I may have found it. Good info & that mounting system is certainly intriguing. Thanks for the info.
You are welcome!
That mounting setup looks super slick. I love the over the tire storage too.
Pretty sweet latching system!
@@IndependenceOverland yeah. That whole setup is killer. That makes the whole thing not seem so crazy on pricing.
@@EF9jdmhatch I'll have the video up on the DIY cargo carrier next week hopefully. Thanks for watching man!
great editing, great presentation too.
and I always get the best I have too. out there isnt where you want anything to fail
Thanks man! I always appreciate your words of encouragement.
Amazing review! Hope Pelican takes notes!
Stay safe keep the rubber down! 💙🇨🇦
Thank you sir!
Added this box recently as well. Great quality and overall purchase IMO
I’m very happy with it. Expensive, but it will out live me so I can accept the price! Yours looks awesome on the Bronco!
Nice review. Just got a BX140R case to put crosswise on an FJ with a Baja rack, it just fits (46” wide).
I’m removing the sticker too, I’d rather have someone think it’s cheap than a $500 case. Although replacing with a custom sticker for your favorite topic (rather than brand) isn’t a bad idea.
Granted, security is relative, anything outside of a vehicle is at a little more risk than if it’s inside, but short of driving an armored truck there’s not a lot you can do. For cases mounted on a roof rack, it’s a little less accessible and someone pilfering is likely to attract some attention. A small padlock will keep casual passers-by from opening it, but anyone that really wants will cut the lock or just take the case (or the whole vehicle).
For what it’s worth, we’ve had no problems with the stuff on our roof during 10 years on the road. Most people are honest enough, and I like to think the off-road community is a little better than average. Pay attention to where you park, when possible, don’t make things too attractive, and hope for the best.
Yeah when I was doing this, my main line of thinking is going back to Mexico. Most of the time we are within the US tucked into the mountains but the places we have gone where we had to leave the truck behind for a while, that’s when I really worry. Thanks for the comment!
Great choice. I’ve got the same one.
I’m very impressed with the case and mounts!
That's a slick setup!
It works really well, I wish I had done it sooner!
A case is a value for sure not justorganisin protecting valuable &$44 gear but making your fun trip better! If you built somthing for performance & drive it that way it looks pr & works that way! There are surprisesOFF ROAD & CAN COME FAST!
I watched your expo video on these and found them to be very innovative. Probably wouldn't do me much good for our camp life, but if I had a need for it, I'd totally be down to buy one or 2.
I appreciate you watching the videos!
@Independence Overland then call me and tell me that, Chunky-Butt
Quality content as always!
Thanks Ben!
crazy how long these have been out and still no mounts for the top
Yup, I agree. They seem to have abandoned these cases to some extent.
Nice! I like that box and the mounting. (But how do you see out the back window! Heehee) As for sticker, get an Independence Overland sticker made that size. That would look even better!

Now we’re talking!
Being able to unscrew the whole mount and walk away with it all is an absolute deal breaker! Guess who walks around with an assortment of tools? Thieves do lol a tweeker would have that thing off in under a minute. Pelican failed hard on this box/mount design.
I would buy one today if Pelican would offer a practical and affordable kit for mounting the case on Yakima round bars.
Yeah, the mounts are crazy expensive. For the same price you can get the Mounting Companies mounts which are far superior, just wouldn’t have been ideal for my particular application.
You could wrap that thing too.
The Colorado sun is brutal to vinyl. My hood is already a pain to deal with, having more stuff to remove a wrap from would be quite a chore. It would look cool though!
I’m going to ceramic coat my new hood vinyl and perhaps it will make it hold up longer. If that’s the case, then I will consider it.
Do the hooks on the backside of the mounts fold down? I have a 4Runner ( factory, no mods, ) and I have only a few inches of clearance through my garage door. The box wouldnt be a permanent addition, but the mounts would be if they can fold out of the way.
Nice vid and review. Ive used Pelican products for 30+ years. Expensive, but worth every penny.
No sir, they unfortunately do not fold down.it’s such a simple mount that you could take them off in about 5 minutes after a trip, but that’s not as nice as folding them down.
There is a different style latch that I believe are still made for these by front runner. They are a little more complicated to use, but they are more low profile.

Thanks for the reply. Travel well my friend.
Looks dope T.
Thanks Jeff!
Nice review. I have looked into Pelican cases. I have the same Alu Cab tent and with roof tray as well. How would you mount on top of tent? Thanks.
Use the same exact mounts I used in the video. I updated the description with links. It would be pretty pretty simple to mount up.
question for you, for the bx55S the interior depth on the website is 8.5". Im assuming thats at the opening andf it widens out below the lip? i want to use it for a camp kitchen setup but the 8.5" is cutting it really close for my stanley cooking pot
Yes, it widens below the lip. This case doesnt have the super thick walls like some of the other companies put on their boxes, which I like because it makes for more usable space.
Fill the heads with jb weld
A damn fine solution, thank you
How is your propane tank mounted on the back of your fj and also what size propane tank is that?
It’s a little 5lb tank using the Refined Cycle propane mount.
Any reason you can’t replace the pull pins with tamper proof bolts?
If you don’t plan on taking it off/I’m constantly I don’t see why not.
Aye forget a Pelican sticker. Make a custom sticker for you and put it on there.
Your the second person to suggest it. I’m on it!
Is this case made in USA or in China like the Roam cases?
Made in Canada

Hope your not getting away from a Toyota, it will be to your demise... bet.
Box seems way to pricey, especially to hold $30 bucks worth of gear. These boxes need to come down in price by 1/2.
Yeah they are expensive cases. Anything with a lifetime warranty goes up significantly. I would like to see cheaper mount options, and I think I have found an alternative people will enjoy. More on that soon.
As for the next build, I will be sharing some of that soon.
So $500 for one box and mount? No thanks
Ridiculously expensive especially if you want to buy the mounting stuff.
