Your kit is going to be absolutely incredible when it's all done! Beautiful job on the sword and that is certainly a chopper!

woodworker here. You want to add a finish onto the stained handle to seal and protect it. A stain by itself doesn't offer any protection and looks pretty dull once dried. I'd add either a couple coats of danish oil, shellac or a blend of danish oil and oil based polyurethane and wipe on 3-4 coats. That wood grain and color will pop and il will prevent it form getting waterspots ot dirt from hands on it and making it all dirty.

Loved the video, that's a beautiful sword. Longswords are always fun, but there's something really cool about those early two-foot blades like the Greek Xiphos or Roman Gladius. They just look deadly in a different way. Lots of interesting swords back then like the Falcata and Kopis, the wacky looking Egyptian Kopesh and so on.
Glad we got to see you use it, too! It cut those branches really damn well. 10/10!

the section where you hand filing i found those cheap diamond square blocks work pretty well on truing up the lines and flats, they crap for proper sharpening but a useful tool for hand blocking.
turned out great, happens to be my fav type of sword too

There's an ancient tale about an Athenian who asks a Spartan soldier why their swords were so short. The Spartan answered, "It's long enough to reach your heart". End of conversation. And no doubt many Persians will fall before your mighty blade!

  • @skiddop3428

    Great work Thak.
I didnt expect the sword to take 45 mins. Looking at the helm/chestpiece videos for your hoplite kit which i considered much more intricate to forge i expected a shorter video. Did you just go over the sword forging in more detail or is it just that much more of a hussle to make?

    • @ThakIronworks
      @ThakIronworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

A lot of different steps involved in making a blade.....so the video ended up being quite long although it took less time construct than the helmet for example

  • @Joe___R

In the early iron age you were better off using a bronze sword that an iron one. Late bronze age & early iron age the skill that went into making swords out of work handed bronze made them better than most iron weapons for a few hundred years.

Another great video Thak. As is always the case with your videos, informative and entertaining. Would love to see you make a Roman gladius someday. One question: how do you get the spine of the sword so ramrod straight?

I'll have to check this out when I get home tonight!
I wonder if you did something from warhammer 40,000 how many views it would get? Very popular thing right now.

This is great! If I had the ability, knowledge, and equipment to do this I probably have made it a bit stabbier and a little less choppier. Also I would have made the handle shape a little different. However, these are minor changes and don't take away from the wonderful job here!
It also taught some valuable techniques for a knife project I have planned. Subscribed.

The word in Greek is spelled: ΞΙΦΟΣ / ξίφος
The letter Ξ / ξ in Greek is always pronounced like the X / x in the word 'exit'

    Excellent Job!!! 👌🏼
Now when it comes to the name, the pronunciation is ‘x-e-foes’ / X (like fox - not Z like Xander) -> Xiphos
P.S. I’m Greek so I think I’m qualified to make this comment 😂

ALMOST ALL, PRONOUNCE THE WORD "XIFOS" WRONG WAY.!!!
IN GREEK LANGUAGE THE LETTER "X" ("Ξ") (ΞΙΦΟΣ), PRONOUNSED AS "KS",....NOT AS "Z" ..... SO,.... THE RIGHT PRONOUNCE FOR THE SWORD IS "KS-I'FOS",....NOT AS "ZI-FOS".!!!
C.V: I LIKE VERY MUCH YOUR WORK ON ALL ANCIENT GREEK HARMOR AND WEAPONS YOU MAKE.....MY CONGRATULATIONS.!!!

@@ThakIronworks It is not completely incorrect, there is a very similar xiphos-type sword, from Macedonia, only it is not the most common
