Education in this country is primarily a communist system. Most schools are not only run by the government, their teaching methods and administrative policies are centrally planned by the federal government. Any industry that is governmet-run and centrally planned will produce horrendous results. There is no innovation and improvement over time in the education sector, there is only deterioration in quality and increase in cost.
Now, if education was a free market system, schools would compete, the best schools would adopt the most effective practices and succeed, the schools that failed their students would go out of business. Incompetent teachers would be fired and salaries would be based on performance/results. Thus, remarkable teachers like Jaime Escalate would get paid the most and would be wildly emulated.

I think in theory it’s great but in practice sucks ass. I think more money should be put into education. I am fundamentally against private school though. I live in LA where there are a ton of private schools. Most spend 10-25k a year. Kid. If you ask me it just separates kids from local residents and instills whatever religious beliefs

This is incredible. It made me think about how much work I have to do before I can be eminently qualified - especially as a mentor. The most powerful aspect to me is that the highest levels of accolade are a function of the subordinates' performance and the far-reaching impacts beyond one's own direct sphere of influence. Listening to this episode of the podcast would benefit any person, but it should be required listening for any parent, coach, manger, leader, etc.

This may be my favorite episode. I needed this opportunity to reflect on my performance in life. My self-evaluations will be more thorough and standardized going forward. I realized I set high standards, or no standards. So if I don't set clear standards for something, then I'll subconsciously ignore it because I don't honor it enough for standards in the first place.

I'm an Army Combat Vet, and now business owner. Let me tell you, after reading that document you read, the "Marine Corps Fitness Report", I have such a higher respect and understanding for Marines. So, I'm taking action: I'm interpreting, converting, and implementing this document into SOP for my company and employees. I'm raising the whole bar, starting exclusively with me. Most importantly, "Inflationary markings only serve to dilute the actual value of each report. Reviewing Officer will NOT concur with inflated reports". Thank you to the USMC and to the both of you for providing this value and motivation. Solid. Shit. Stand by to Get Some!

This is one of his best podcast....it exanded into other Jockopodcast and even a book, "The Code" w Dave Burke.....it amazes me that most company's don't use reviews effectively.....My company is too greedy to even do them. It takes brutal honesty and action to make it an effective tool. The company will grow and it will set a culture. Good company's use them the right way to pay their employees more money when they reach a standard. It's a form of collecting data in your work force, but only effective with 100% honesty a relationship.

The University I went to worked like this too. They didn't *have* to mark on a bell curve, but my profs said *if* they turned in student grades that didn't form a bell curve, they had to write a lengthy essay explaining why that was the case. Of course, no one wants to write an essay they can avoid, so student grades always formed a perfect bell curve.

JOCKO: for the Eminent Qualifications list how about: 1. A PDF to download/print/save on the phone, and 2. An app? It seems like a natural progression for your business. Advertisers/links can be Origin/Irish Oaks Ranch/Flipside Canvas, etc. You could have a tab connecting for shopping to get gear from the store to represent. Links to Victory MMA, BJJ websites, etc. an “all-in-one” shop. You could also have daily tasks and goals like Todoist (or partner with them) and achievements like Garmin. I have enjoyed both of those recently, as I build habits in getting my daily steps in/earning achievements for working out vs. the PlayStation, and organizing my day so I can more effectively prioritize and execute and put in my PT as priority one. Good luck, I know you can make it happen and that it would greatly benefit your business and all the people following. I greatly appreciate your time, attention, and thoughts into the matter.

The beginning hit me and I have to comment before I finish watching because that 4.0 system directly retarded my future growth and I believe that is what is happening in society today.
I was in boot camp 3 days after my 17th Bday. Been a troubled child, the old man couldn't handle me anymore and a bunch of other problems, but I can honestly say this day was a great day in my life.
Throughout boot, I was 4.0 for the most part, but I was in Triple Threat on the drill team, and a Div MAA, so I sat in the cage on the second floor a lot and cleaned empty units for the next company coming in while guys were doing the mundane stuff. I still had to do mandatory stuff like drill practice, did parades and what have you, but It was easier in way.
But guys did fail, and get set back a week or even discharged because they just couldn't do the physical stuff, which really wasn't hard but for some of the guys with weight issues, it was. Obesity is big now, not so much then, 1981.
Then I went to OS A school in VA and was 3.8 to 4 which seemed fine to me. I finished 3rd in my class
Then I hit the fleet. I got to pick my assignment for finishing high and I picked the USS Constellation CV 64 as I had watched a movie where a carrier went back in time and watching Tomcats flying on and off a ship was awesome and indeed it was...for a month. LOL
I was lucky enough to get there just in time to do 90 days in the IO, another great time, 8 on, 8 off, not counting drills....but throughout, 3.8-4.0 sailor, everyone doing their job.
Then we hit ports. First for me was Perth Australia, went out had fun, actually saw some sites, then Singapore, had made a few new friends in other divisions, drank more and as a young guy, almost hooked up with a trans not knowing it, was saved by a buddy. Then went to PI and my world that I had been in previously came back. The new friends I had made, that had been there before, showed me the ropes. Booze, drugs, and women. I had always loved the first 2 but still had not been with a woman and the guys thought that should be fixed.
Long story short, that day defined me for a long time after. I did not enjoy that ( I am married and love women, just not using them, I am weird that way)
At any rate, I became a slacker, I started going back to my old ways, stole a buddy's ninja and crashed it, said oh well, and all the while guess what?
I was still rated 3.8-4.0. Got in a fight with a couple petty officer folks, went to mast and I did end up getting kicked to the curb after the second time, and rightly so, still under honorable conditions general discharge.
Heres what I learned in all this at the time. No matter what I did I was great until something drastic happens, THEN you are a problem.
THEN AIDs came along. Remember the hype when it was first going around. It can lie dormant for 10 years and the rest. Famous folks dying and all I could think of was I was with a woman, unprotected in PI....what if?
Thankfully nothing came of it, but from that time on NOBODY can peer pressure me into something. Whether that is believing or doing something if I do it, I own it, and that includes all my previous failures
I like the 5-star system. I like a system where you can learn that compared to others there MAY be room for improvement or at least having folks around you that can fill in those gaps. We should know our weaknesses. This system may have made me more aware of my weaknesses and showed me my strengths by highlighting what I was doing right rather than saying I am an all around great sailor and though I ended up living my life this way, it was through trial and error and maybe while I was being told how 4.0 I was that I was told here is the structure of becoming a great sailor and this is how we rate it and you can improve through it, maybe, I could have avoided becoming the old idiot I was before I joined and be a lifetime member like several of my buddies were.
Unfortunately, I see the services going backward on the whole, even special services

Anthony Morielli I’m looking for these forms also. I will let you know if I’m able to find them or if someone directs me to them. Please do the same and alert me if you find this information. Thank you.

Been awhile, 30 years, since I was a Marine. But I remember problems with that 5 scale grading system. It seems that nobody wanted to grade their subordinates anything less than a 4.6. I think the problem is that it didn't have enough stratifications. Rather than five, there should be 10 to account for people who were real screw-ups. So when you get a 5 out of 10 you know you're doing okay.

I am in the middle-to-end of medical school right now, and these are very relevant standards for the work that we as (future) doctors are doing, next to the CanMEDS framework we follow in medicine.
Is there a pdf file of these standards which are shareable perhaps?

I've uninstalled all my videogames... It is my one weakness that once I start I can't stop. I'm embarrassed because I had the problem growing up and its been encroaching on my life now that I'm in college. I want to stop the STOP START STOP START problem where I get back into the bad habit. Before you know it I am wasting 5 hours a day, my mind is fried and I start eating crap. Jocko it would be awesome if you could do an episode on why games are bad for you and why you should give them up for good, I know the reasons already but if I have a sound record of you telling me and others to stay free it would really help me out a ton. Thanks.

I just purchased the Molk DARKNESS!!! Question...I tore up my shoulder, bicep, labrum, etc. My flexibility is ahead of schedule because I'm gettin' after it. Will the Krill Oil be enough or should Joint Warfare find its' way in there? Lastly, had dinner and washed it down with Jocko White Tea. Dude!!! This podcast is slowly creeping in to every aspect of my life. Definitely NOT a bad thing. Carry on.

Thats what the stoic philosophers do.. they journal at the end of the day and they write on: what did I encountered today? Did I respond or did I react it ? What did I do today to get me closer to my goal? have I noticed anything that distracted me of my goal? etc
