A bad piece of advice that I heard from a friend was that it was cruel to put a puppy in a crate. He changed his mind after his puppy was chewing on his couch and having accidents all over the house. Now he uses a crate for his puppy!
My brother says dog crates are cruel too. I'll have to remember the playpen analogy next time he says that about my pup. Some people misuse crates, yes, but that is true of absolutely everything, even cribs and playpens.
My puppy’s breeder gave us an introduction sheet that said we should hit the crate and yell “no!” if the puppy whines or cries in the crate. He also gave us a book with the same advice, copyright 1990!! Figures.

was actually told by a trainer years ago... if your puppy is barking or whining in the crate you should have a can with pennies to shake and distract them, ok that part is not as bad as the second part... if the pup does not stop whining, throw the can at the crate to stop them, theory being the loud noise would redirect the pups attention. What it actually does is make a fearful dog who cringes and cries at every loud noise,
Very helpful video. One thing I'm unclear about though, in another video you advise putting a Snuggle Puppy toy in the crate with a new puppy to alleviate anxiety, but how does that differ from bedding as a potential choking or swallowing hazard?
Appreciating a lot your informations & advices 👌😊 Thanks a lot 😊 I'm from Egypt & I like a lot to watch your videos 👌 collecting a right info. Not easy at all, but you really changed that 👌😊
My puppy is 14 weeks old, we just got him last week, previously he was outside and not well socialized. A video on how to properly socialize would be helpful (he currently just tries to bolt). Also, for the potty routine, during crate time do I always cover crate? Until what age does that stop?
I love your videos, thank you so much. I have a question what about taking your dog to work with you and having a doggie playpen, I own a restaurant and would keep my puppy in the kitchen with me. I would take the puppy out for short pee breaks but at least they are not home alone. Can you give me your thoughts on this my work day is six hours ??
Hello! For some dogs that's a great arrangement. But for others that could be overstimulating. So it will depend on the temperament of your dog. The best thing to do is work up to that situation slowly, such as taking him to work for just a little bit of time, allow him to sniff and get used to the area and then go back home. Slowly over time, increase the time he's there and start adding in some time in the pen. Pay close attention to body language to ensure it's a positive experience for him!
I know you said bedding is bad for puppy because they might chew on it but I was wondering if I could use old towels and blankets so if they have accident you can wash is easily.
Hi love the info you put out, really helpfull. Is it ok to rotate the puppy crate from one are to another or is it best to just keep to the same routine/similarity
When we 1st start crate training, we keep it in one spot. As pup starts to get used to it and doesn't have any issues we can move it. Eventually, moving it occasionally isn't a bad idea. This means if we ever needed to move it, pup won't panic when it's in a different location. We may move it from one side if the room to the other or to a different room entirely.
Hi Michele! Thanks for your videos they are very informative and we are getting prepared every time we watch your videos before bringing our new bundle of joy at home. The playpen that you have suggested is currently not available in amazon, can you please suggest another one that you like? and also for English cream Golden retriever which Petmate Sky Kennel Pet Carrier size will be the best? I don’t know if this is bad or good advise. Whenever your puppy gets sleepy, don’t let it sleep on your lap or next to you, rather put it in the crate. The reason given is it can lead to separation anxiety as it becomes used to sleeping on you from a young age. True or False?
We definitely recommend that you use all naps and nights for crate training. Sleeping on laps is fine in moderation and after your pup has become comfortable in the crate. If you're struggling with crate training check out our new mini course! courses.howtotrainadreamdog.com/crate-training-course
I did think, what does this 20 year know about dog training. Then you said you’ve been certified for 20 years!!! What! Does that prevent you from ageing? But also, great tips thank you! Very concise
So I commented before on a different video. My boys are now 10 weeks old one doesn’t care if he is in the crate at all could care less, but the brother doesn’t like it. I have them next to each other with a sheet covering both cages so they can still see each other. He doesn’t freak out as much. Should I make 2 separate pens for them to be in or should I just do 1 pen for when I’m not home. Thanks so much in advance
We'd recommend them being in two separate crates. Here is a great video on raising littermates that digs into this more and has lots of other great tips! th-cam.com/video/p_RDIS9yoVo/w-d-xo.html
if my puppy does something good and I put them in the crate and make the crate like a reward should I do that because I want to be a great trainer like you because my dad got an 8-year-old puppy and he was born on January 1, 2021, he is not our house yet we are going to get him after valintines
Should i put my kennel somewhere else at first? Im planning on keeping the kennel under my bed since its got like 32+ inches of clearance, im not against putting it somewhere outside my room at night to start but it wouldnt be abke to stay
Great question! Even though your pup is older, you can still apply the same techniques we would use with young pups. th-cam.com/video/rnMFXmzh_Cc/w-d-xo.html
We just got a toy puppy 8 weeks poodle, first night put him in crate cries and settle for 1 to 2 hours and then cry again but this time even if I let him cry for several minutes and im beside him he doesn’t stop . Now I got him this donut type bed for anxiety he’s using today for nap he love it so my question is can I put this donut bed inside crate since he seems to like it , i put him next to crate and food /water he gets up from nap drink water goes back to bed. I hope Im not messing up with training him to like his crate or like my husband says he’s just a baby he misses mom ,dad & brothers maybe when he get very comfortable with us he’ll stay longer in his crate .
I have never understood why people let there dogs ride with there head out the windows. It drives me nuts because I know its not safe. I'm all about dog car seats ( harness).
Yes! We agree! It's so hard to see them doing something so dangerous. Thanks for keeping your pup safe! For more great info about car travel with dogs, check out this video: th-cam.com/video/npvb4dk8hxs/w-d-xo.html
If I move some furniture around i can put my crate in the living room..this will be the room where we watch TV in the evening....is that a good place ? I have 2 other dogs and I know they will need a break sometimes, so i'm planning on using the crate for bedtime and sleep breaks and to give my others a break//living room or not ? otherwise when we sit in the evenings puppy will be alone ( i realise puppy needs time alone too )
Using aversive tools to scare or punish your puppy is an old technique that doesn't teach the puppy what to do. Positive reinforcement is more effective than punishment techniques. Check out this video for more info: th-cam.com/video/C2hPcodaHJ8/w-d-xo.html
@@HowToTrainADreamDog thank you. I will check out the video. I have two older dog training books and I found both of those methods in there so I was curious.
We are setting up a day crate with a pen in our living room and then a sleeping crate in my room is that okay that way during the potty training and in the day he is right by the back door so we are able to take him out easier
Kokila Rani try using nature’s miracles to clean the area. The scent will no longer be there and we will hopefully know stop. Also reward him when he goes outside!
Dogs do not like to mess where they sleep. So your crate may be too big, it should be big enough for him to stand, turnaround and lay down. Any bigger and the puppy will be able to pee in one end and sleep comfortably in the other. Try a crate divider to make the space smaller.
Personally I would add a blanket. This is my personal choice and if the puppy was in danger would take it out. For me personally i would get your puppy use to blankets and try to reduce the amount of biting before they go in the crate. I feel that leaving puppies especially those of a large breed to sleep on a hard surface isn't good. This is because larger breeds are very prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. If your puppy gets this at a young age it isn't going to be nice for your poor puppy or your wallet from all the vet bills. Larger breed dogs only normally start to get hip or elbow dysplasia when they are older a puppy should not be getting this at a young age. For any dog I would recommend a blanket that is quite thick and also very strong to limit the risk of them chewing it. Also maybe make the blanket one of the first things to teach your puppy not to bite this should help to limit the biting. I hope this helps! Please do your own research though and talk to a trainer! Again my personal choice and opinion. 💞
@Reclusiarch Grimaldus I was saying personally for me thats what I am going to do with the german shepherd puppy I am getting in a few months. And laying on hard surfaces can assist in giving some dogs hip or elbow dysplasia. I am personally not going to take the risk.
@@hollies1564 NEVER use towels or blankets in a puppy’s crate!!! Do you not realize how many puppies chew off a corner of a blanket or towel and swallow it? This can cause a blockage and needs emergency surgery!! It’s VERY dangerous! Having an empty crate is much better. It’s not going to cause hip dyplasia! At all. That’s a genetic disorder. If you feel it’s too cold, put the crate on top of a blanket or even on a warming pad. You don’t have to have your crate directly on the floor.
@@judyives1832 If you don't do it thats fine. It is my personal choice, I have found ways to train puppies out of this quickly and easily and have never had a problem. If i felt that the puppy i was working with was not going to cope with having a blanket in there and would be putting themselves in danger of course im going to take it out!! I never said that it causes it i said it can assist in hip dysplasia which if you research, it can. I am a huge dog lover, have been researching dogs and dog training for 5 years and volunteering at a dog training centre for 1 year.
