I live in Barnstaple, My Volvo D5 blew an injector out of the cylinder head as a previous helicoil repair had failed, I was so stressed out thinking i would have to get the cylinder head replaced which i could not afford, I went to Barum engines and had a chat with Lee, He put me straight to my ease and told me to get the car over to him as he could sort it, Sort it he did for a very reasonable cost and he turned the job around in a few hours, The D5 is still going strong after the Barum engines repair, I highly recommend Barum engines as Lee is genuine, Loves his work and will not rip you off 👍
it’s nice to hear a positive review, unfortunately the bad jobs spread a lot faster than the bad, especially in the classic car scene it’s like wildfire
I have had a number of engines built by Barum engines. Excellent service and did exactly what was agreed and end result was perfect. Recommend speaking to them if you need engine work.
Thanks for doing this video, it gives another perspective how Barrum’s business works. Lee is upfront about everything, and running a business, added with the change in attitude of customers since Covid, is not to be envied. You still have to make a profit, and repairing engines with classic and high performance in mind does increase the scrutiny on how you run your business. Some of the comments are critical, but I’d love to see how they would cope in the same situation.
Hi I have been subscribed to Barum engines for a few years and watch every video including Barum BTS (Behind The Scenes) which has bee handed over to the apprentice "Isaac" and his Subaru but there may also other behind the scenes parts of Barum It is worth watching Especially the race days!
Enjoyed that👍 As an ex engine rebuilder its nice to see someone doing the job properly to show some transparency as theres so many sharks out there in the murky world of engine re'conning' - Keep up the good work Lee!
Being a small specialist is a good route to take. It allows you to take a small amount of work, and make the most profit. It's about making money, not keeping super busy.
I do starter motors and alternator on the side. Just got Mercury boat starter to fix that has been under water. It`s quite interesting. Just about to strip it.
like we was discussing you can spread yourself to thin trying to do everything. I keep looking at other things I can add to my company and sometimes it’s just not worth the hassle
They do a good job with the tooling they have. Problem for a company trying to expand is the cost of equipment required to make the jobs any better, for example a CNC honing machine from Rottler is £340k. To tool up with all the machinery to build an engine to exacting standars is around 1 million. To charge 80-100 £ per hr to the public. Not happening.
same as our work,we can carry out repairs they hold up but if you want the loom making the the spec of the manufacturers is going to cost more than the car is worth every time
Lee banned me from commenting on his channel 😢😢 I think I upset him when I said the Pakistani engine guys, who work outside on the floor, have less comebacks than Barum 😂 Think I hit a nerve. 😂
lol,he has always been open about his returns and the reasons it happens,I was going to buy a auto gearbox company once, he says that whole trade expect a 40-50% return rate and higher if the customer fit the box. sod that
I enjoy all the warranty and court case videos, great entertainment but I do feel sorry for the customers. Barum had a bad reputation locally now thanks to TH-cam that reputation is global.
@@rmsdiagnostics Well thank you, that's a bit surprising after I criticised Barum. 😆 This was the first video of yours I've watched, you have gained a lot of subscribers in a short time on TH-cam, well done. I'll watch more of your videos. 👍
Thanks buddy,it’s been growing nicely and hoping it’s going to become a nice authentic channel that will last instead of a quick blow up and then gone over night.
Rule one. NEVER PUBLICLY CRITICISE A FELLOW BUSINESS. Apparently scrutiny from people who know you have opinions that would not promote your company in a positive way.
@@GRUMPY0254 Barum Lee made videos criticising fellow businesses not just a single random comment. However I do agree with you and two wrongs don't make a right.
I can only judge from what I see on the channel,Lee is upfront with the good and bad parts of trying to fix broken stuff,it’s never perfect and I like he is still trying to move forward with his business and processes to give the customer a better experience. can’t ask for much more, but like everyone in the classic/ performance industry all bad experiences travel like wild fire and chinese whispers don’t help either. I’m sure I have a bad name in a lot of people minds but I can only keep trying to improve. 🙏🙏
I have watched it from the outset and still enjoy the vids but....if I lived in Blighty not sure I would have them build my engine...a little bit too casual about things
Everyone has heard bad things about all engine builders. Because of the successful YT channel and their exposure, there are going to be more people that have ‘heard bad things’ about them. For example,my sister’s ex husband’s gardener saw a Facebook post from their Venezuelan cousin that Lee and Isaac are eating the dawgs, they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of the people that live in Barnstaple.
Yeah its like good news you rarely hear about that which covers off 99% its always the 1% who have "heard bad things" that grabs the headlines so I dont sweat the small stuff........
I would've trust barum with a lawnmower engine, let alone a valuable classic engine. A constant stream of warranty claims and customer complaints. High value finished jobs sent out insufficiently packaged and getting damaged, etc. A shambolic disgrace.
I get that the trust won’t be there from yourself but if a company like Barum engine and also mine are putting out these videos to help make constant little changes and putting in processes to stop mistakes happening again,it can’t be a bad thing? if we learn from our mistakes and show others our faults and take onboard any advise it’s got to be the way forward.
who pissed up your rear end? A business takes the time to be honest and upfront about how things run in the real world and you want to slag them. If you had a real complaint as a real customer of their business then you would not sound like such a pathetic troll.

it’s not easy to run a company these days, thanks for the nice comments
Great vid
It just shows how you have to have cooperation between businesses and pick and choose the jobs that come in the door
thanks mate

Great video. It’s a great idea for a series as nobody is doing this 👍👍
thank you
It's interesting to see how the "clean room" is starting to become full of clutter.
I bet it’s a constant battle
Barum: Get that line boring equipment going, which will bring you more income!
like we was discussing you can spread yourself to thin trying to do everything. I keep looking at other things I can add to my company and sometimes it’s just not worth the hassle
It's strange watching Barum content without Lee or Isaac making the video.
Isaac was the camara man👌👌
Brilliant! 😊

Lee get the workshop finished - it still sticks out as incomplete
now he is back working in there I would think it will get finished in his next down time or project he starts,
