I just did this last week for the exact same reason you did. It was filthy and smelled like smoke. I also found a water leak and many rust holes in the floor. Luckily I was able to patch them and get rid of the water leak.
It was/is my intention to reinstall some type of sound barrier and rust proofing after confirming that the water leak was stopped, which it is.. Now I just have to make myself actually do it.. If I do I'll likely post a video..
