Thanks Rusty! I took the auto train on the way back from my Lifestyle visit. It was my second time on the auto train. Kind of a last minute decision. I was not looking forward to that drive back to MD. I usually have to call because we need a Handicap bedroom and my Mom needs assistance. And I find if I call, the price is better than what is on the website. Looks like you had smooth sailing with the check in. We arrived around 1ish and it was crazy as the train had arrived late and people were still coming off. But they are extremely efficient and we left on time. Snacks/drinks are a must. You can bring a little cooler but not a big one. I made that mistake. I slept (or tried to) sleep on the top bunk. You have to be a contortionist to get up there and it was claustrophobic and hot! Next time, I think we will just leave the seats and not do the beds. Many people have said that if they are travelling with 2 people, they do two roomettes across for each other for more room and I believe the 2nd roomette is cheaper. It is not perfect, but I would absolutely do it again.

I did not know that. I'll have to investigate that if I do it again. Did you have to ask?

My brother was a magician that was hired by auto train in the 1970's to walk up and down the aisle entertaining passengers with magic tricks.

So we have taken this a few times from Lorton to Sanford. One time I had to fly down to Orlando for work ahead of our family vacation and my son and his future wife returning to school in Florida with their cars, so my husband, daughter, son and future daughter inlaw took the train down with 2 cars and a truck. I took it with my husband and daughter with one car. For us it has always been a good experience. We always just had the coach seats. People tacked up blankets from the overhead to add more privacy. The seats are so generously sized and lay completely flat for sleep. Bring a blanket and pillow in your train bag. We'd so it again and are considering it for this fall because we have back to back trips with the car.

Rusty, thanks for the info. We have taken the auto train a couple times and one thing to mention is if you ride in coach you cannot eat dinner in the dining car; it's only for those who get the rooms. We've done the coach and brought sandwiches. We also bring a bag with blankets and pillows. And if the train isn't full and there are 2 of you traveling, one person can go take an empty seat and stretch out to sleep.

At the stop in Florence, SC to exchange engineers and pick up water, people are allowed to take their service animals off for a quick break. This stop is about halfway so as long as the train isn't delayed, the animals only have to hold it for 8-9 hours or so.

Hi Rusty. Wanted to let you know that my husband and I work for Amtrak. He Is a manager and works for Auto Train mechanical dept. He is in charge of the locomotives. Today, on Sunday's, he has the whole train. I am manager for the mechanical dept in Miami, first and only woman in the Southern division. I was a Foreman years ago at the Auto Train. If you ever need anything, or we can help you, let us know. My name is Jill Sheppard, and my husband is Virlyn. We are retiring in a couple of months and going to the Villages. He is currently living there in a rental. Hope to buy a home in there soon. I currently still live in South Florida running the Silver Service trains. Long story, LOL. Hey Rusty, I've done this trip four times now. I have a condo in Fort Myers and a house in Annapolis Maryland area. For the first time I broke down and spent the $95 for the early car removal. The rule is (according to my friend to work for Amtrak for 30 years) first on last off, so unless you show up right before report NLT time of 3 PM, you'll be one of the last cars to be pulled off and that's happened to me more than once. In addition, I found that the crew in the northern Lorton station are a lot slower than the crew in Sanford, Florida, who hustle a lot more. The problem with showing up last minute to have your car pulled off first is the fact that you have the only options left for dinner, which is 9 PM. Paying the fee for early car removal is well worth the money. It's taking me up to almost 2 hours to get my car off the train. Even if you've never done the auto train before, it's a very rough ride. I strongly encourage to take some Ambien or melatonin, gummy's to help you sleep.

Great video. Thanks for all the info. For those wondering what happens if you get sick or have a medical emergency on the train, I’ll explain what happened on my last trip. A lady was coming up those twisty, narrow stairs in coach and went flying into a coach seat when the train hit a bump. She had a pretty bad head injury and was bleeding everywhere. It was difficult to find a conductor. They seem to disappear at night. Once a conductor was found, the train relayed a message to the ambulance service at the next town. The train stopped at an intersection in that town, the ambulance showed up, took the lady off the train and we continued on the journey. Not sure what happens to your car when you leave the train.

You have to pick it up at the station you are headed to. They will hold it there for you. We've taken the AT many times and have had a few medical emergency stops.

Excellent video! We take the train about once a year and get a roomette. I sleep on the top bunk and do just fine and I'm 5'11". If you don't book a room and sit in coach, I would highly recommend bringing snacks. I've seen people bring everything including a charcuterie meal inside a small tackle box because of all the small slots. If you want a gorgeous train trip, go to Chicago and take the California Zephyr to California. Beautiful mountain views with streams for hundreds of miles.

There is a fantastic German Restaurant in Sanford .
We have been taking the auto train off and on since 1998. Have had some awful delays where , they ran out of food . But if your train is ever very delayed and you write a letter , you get a free trip . One Christmas the delays were so bad that we got into Sanford at 11:00 pm ( instead of the morning time ) . We always pay for priority to get our car out early . By the time we got into our house in the West Palm beach area it was 2am Christmas morning.
~ We always get the bedroom with its own bathroom.
The big negative is that the room doors do not lock ., Also the beds are not comfortable and the food is mediocre. The food isn’t terrible and you get one free alcoholic drink with your dinner when you have a room . I usually go with their steak option .
A positive is that you save mileage on your car and wear and tear .
I have to admit that l do like taking the train . Every one should do it once .

We took the Auto Train back in the early 70s when I was a little boy. All I clearly remember is watching the movie “Man of La Mancha” and having Kellogg cereal in a built in plastic bowl (those were the days of the cardboard boxes that never made good bowls). 🤣

Hi Rusty, just wanted to elaborate on my bad experience on the Auto train. To begin with, we were scheduled to leave at 530pm but didn’t leave until 830 pm and didn’t get our dinner till 1030 pm. During our travel around 2-3 am my wife asks : Why are stopped? Which I hadn’t noticed, but there was an emergency and a couple of passengers had an ambulance pick them up at an unknown location. Nevertheless it was a sleepless ride to Norton Virginia and once we arrived we had to wait for our car to be unloaded. After an hour or so of waiting we started to wonder where our car was and one of the employees says, ‘there’s a car with a dead battery (ours) and once they get it going they’ll finish unloading the cars. As it turns out , our car was second to the last car and the employee that drove our car unto the train turned on the headlights manually (which wasn’t necessary cuz they were on Auto). So once he parks our car he must’ve thought the headlights were on auto and just left the lights on for the duration of the ride. Once our battery was charged and our car unloaded the display on our car wasn’t working properly so we ended up driving to a car repair in the evening and we had to drop it off and take a Lyft ride to a hotel till the next day when we had to get a new battery. So that’s our experience going there, coming back we had to put up with loud passengers behind us and no sooner than they fall asleep, they start snoring real loud…so I don’t think I’ll be taking the Auto train any time soon 😅

      @RustyNelson  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

WOW>>>WOW and one more wow. Two things. Thanks to both of you for the reply. This is a great example of how things can go wrong. And, I think you got them all in one ride. I feel bad for both of you. That's really a good point about the headlights. I'm glad that Amtrak responded. It may not have been the full answer you wanted but it sounds like more of a response than the airlines give these days. Once again thanks so much for taking the time. I'm not sure what you could do about the headlight thing. Crazy!

Rusty , l tried to reply to you , but it doesn’t show up …. So …
Near Lorton there is an excellent little restaurant a few miles away , it’s called The Secret Garden . It’s in an adorable little town .
We always get the bedroom bc we are senior citizens , the porter is always helpful,
and we always tip him ( most people do tip them ) . We bring our own pillows bc the pillows are very thin .
They used to show movies years ago , but we were told that they no longer show movies bc the company that supplies them got ridiculously expensive due to rights or something.
Our next trip on the auto train is next trip . It might be our 20th , but who is counting ?! 😀

We are on the auto train now and were given the choice of dinner in the room or dining car . The last time we were on the train on April 23 they only had dining car dining . Hoping that the train is on time leaving , it’s 3:40 and they just announced that there was a late arrival . Apparently someone had an accident, turning left into the station, maybe that’s the situation, but that left turn into the station next to the 95 Ramps could be a bit confusing.

My reply’s don’t seem to come through. Our train was actually Very Early this am . We had to wait an hour and a half to disembark, bc not enough crew got there early enough. We waited an hour and a half for them to show . We had Pirority boarding so we were car # 20 and got off basically at the regular scheduled time . As l said , we have taken this trip about 20 times since 1998. We have had some awful trips. ( like once we were the last to leave bc they “ lost “ our car . With this trip we have moved permanently to FL . We might take the auto train again , but l look forward to a leisurely trip north stopping at Charlestown and Williamsburg .

ok I have taken AMTRAK many times. The type of people vary from professionals to low lifes to race track people. Ok first professionals, no problem here. Low lifes : I have seen more than once people take their shoes and socks off, and start cutting their toe nails in their seats. I have seen slobs buying under age teens drinks , going to bar car and bringing them back, trying to get them drunk and take advantage of them. The problem is that the conductors seem to vanish. I have seen people party like it's 1999 for whole trip. I have seen people not pay, and get thrown off at next stop. One trip so many people entered because the race track was done, that people were putting their lawn chairs in the middle of aisle. They had to stop in 20 minutes and hook up more cars. Another time the train ran into dead cars on track and had to empty the train and move the people to another train. Another time I had to exit the train, take a "trolly" where the police forced every one off, because they were looking for someone with choppers in air at night. Put us on bus and bus wen up the hill to cul de sac couldn't turn around, was rocking back and forth, people were turning yellow. Then everyone said enough and walked back down to trolley station. All, true. would I lie to you ? Taking the train, is MORE than an adventure.

European auto train goes approximately 200 mph and cost between $30 and $200. I have no idea what this charge encompasses.

@@scott-og6iu he is trying to say Randy please mention that you can stay in your seat all night, and not have to pull a three stooges and get one of those train cars that have beds in them with sheets hanging down as dividers for people to sleep in, or cars that have rooms to sleep in like the Oriental Express does.
