    Thank you - I have been able to replace the washers on my taps! I quoted £45 quid from a plumber to do this and am so happy that I found this site :)

    Very useful - had the same problem as other people, the cartridge was incredibly stiff to remove - I used a socket on a T-bar to hold the tap, and the socket set wrench and 17mm socket - I was using more force to undo it than I thought was healthly, but it did come apart without any problems or damage. Hope this tip, along with the video, can help someone else out. Thanks Owen, this sort of basic but really useful video can be a life-saver for us non-plumbers.

    Thanks Owen, what a great video, the Plastic Tube to hold the tap worked great, now in my tool box. Cheers.

      Agreed. I keep bits of plastic tubing for other purposes, so I always have some. But it's great to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

  • @Pixel1962
    @Pixel1962 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    IMPORTANT UPDATE...! Further to my own researches (better known as 'actually DOING the job') I have found that, in some cases, the washer at the bottom of the cartridge just slips AROUND the retaining 'lug'. There was no nut or screw to undo. You just fit it between the lug and the base of the cartridge, and press it down around the base of the cartridge to ensure a proper seal. I still could not have changed the tap without this video though...

    many thanks for this. i got stuck (literally) when trying to get the lid off. prising with a screwdriver didnt help. i worked out that there was a thick layer of corosion inbetween the outer and inner tap sticking it together. so i scraped the corrosion out with a small flat headed screwdriver. i tried the tap without replacing the washer and found that it works much more smoothly now with no dripping

    My issue was the valve had come lose, thus when you turned the tap open more than 60% water spurted out and the tap head came off! Tyvm for the video, saved me getting a plumber in!

  • @scott1brayden2
    @scott1brayden2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The care and attention to protecting the tap is a good idea, prepare in advance so your less likely to get heavy and scratch up the tap in the process

  • @blondeenigma3882
    @blondeenigma3882 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So what do you do if the valve won't come off, no matter how long you unscrew it, for you to take it out and get at the washer ? I couldn't lift mine off like that to do the next stage despite it turning continuously ! Same tap exactly as well.

  • @SW1Q1

    Thanks for posting.
    When we saw what should happen in the servicing of a normal tap by a normal person, we realised that we should stop as the tap we had was identical but abnormal.
    .
    It had corroded inside, invisible to us, it was impossible to un-wrench the top of the tap.
    .
    Under the basin it had come lose and then, the whole tap was 'moving about'.
    .
    .
    So, we left it to for a plumber to come and fix; he'll have to replace the tap as it is cheap and nasty.
    .
    Cheers,.

    del-boy

    Could not get the top off after removing the screw. Then I started to worry when I put it all back - what if I never put the water pressure on the tap high enough when I turned the water back on. Could that affect the water heaters, or plumbing in the bath room?

    It didn't have a screw, the washer just pulled off.

    I can't seem to find anything on google other than the full top part including the valve ?

    I see that your tap is a 'Cold water tap'. My problem involves the 'Hot' one, which unwinds almost all the way till a low pressure flow comes out. NOW--the bloody thing just goes round and round with NO water. This is the bathroom basin. We have recently had a new 'Combi ' boiler fitted (it's in the Garage) where do I turn off the hot water--to do this job please?

    Well, I got half way thru the video: tried to unscrew to top of the tap to get to the washer and couldn’t do it for love nor money.
    Still got a dripping tap. Feeling utterly gutted, dejected, fed up with the situation, just wanted to change the washer myself as my bloke has no idea but can’t even do that! Now gotta spend money on a plumber ffs!
    Blisters all over my hands
    Thank you for your help, if I could get the top of the tap off, I wouldn’t end up back in debt again cos my man is a scrub.

    very helpful, thank you. ok so its a day later. important to say l know nothing about plumbing. l decided to look at the stuck hot tap on the bath, well no isolater valve on the bath so turned off at mains but of course that has nothing to do with the hot tap. l decided to change both valves which meant removing one to get it matched at the plumber shop. so l removed the cold tap valve and remembered that there is a cold water tank in the loft so had to wait for that to drain, then got 2 replacement valves and fitted, simple except with no obvious way of turning off the hot water l had to quickly swap the new valve with hot water coming out as didnt want to wait while all the water drained out of the tank.
    so then turned on the water again at the mains and water at kitchen sink but nothing upstairs at all, then remembered tank needs to fill, hour later still nothing, looked at tank, checked ball valve which came off in my hand, fixed that and noticed the flow is very slow, pressed little valve in and out and it got better, then noticed there is an overflow running outside but cant see why. the tank for what might be the toilet is not overfull and neither is the main water tank so wheres it coming from?

      Thanks. I'll look into it. So at 2:00, you see the screw that needs to be unscrewed? In my tap, the screw is stuck very very tight. I am unable to turn it in any way. How do I loosen the screw? I tried using lubricant, doesn't work. To unscrew, I believe I must turn it clockwise, am I right? I did try turning both ways to see if the screw would budge. no luck unfortunately. Can you suggest how I can work at this?

    Well Owen, I've used my box-spanner, holding the body of the tap and the nut will not budge...so now what? I wish you guys would post more realistic videos that include the kinds of problems people experience in reality. I'm sick of watching videos where nuts and screws are undone with ease - and I'm thinking 'No, it won't be like that' - and it never is. Not bostin.

      I had the same problem, as I could not get enough leverage on the spout to stop the body of the tap rotating. I ended up cutting a length of timber that I jammed between the spout and the bathroom wall to stop it moving. That let me apply maximum force with the wrench to get the nut undone.
