"I think, I feel, I believe" is the progression of judgment. "I don't think you can" is the first tolling of The Couple's Death Knell. Good call, Cuddy.
That being said, it’s still bad writing to handle it in this way. And she had zero sympathy for him after the fact. I skip over this arc whenever I rewatch the show
Good point, McGregor. House finally cared, making him extremely vulnerable. This was new territory and coping to new stresses (like fear of his girlfriend DYING) was likely to trigger a familiar setback. But that setback was generated by love, not malice - an enormous change for House. In my opinion, Cuddy wanted "Mr. Perfect" and not Gregory House. What's dangerous is that Cuddy turned off both her human compassion and doctor sense. Cuddy chose to ignore the risks of being judgmental and abruptly severing such an important relationship with House. Any empathetic person could figure out what would happen next. House would break, completely. Which explains why House took a car for a ride into Cuddy's living room, later on.
Most drug addicts have personality disorders and it’s recommended not to date the personality disordered. But, yes the writers could’ve written more compassionately.
I used to work in an open plan office with the desks in pairs facing two other desks. The woman sitting diagonally from me suddenly screamed once, and the girl sitting next to me appeared from under her desk crying with laughter. She had dropped her pen and saw an opportunity and grab her ankle! A truly iconic moment
@@thefakedavid8541 it was very, very funny. I saw a similar event when I was in the army in the common room watching Nightmare of Elm Street. Ne of the guys at the front kept jumping all through the film and I was three rows back. I saw some crawling under the armchairs and wonder what was going on. At the right moment in the film they grabbed the guy who kept being spooked by the film. He stood up and screamed, and the people in the second row pulled the guy who had crawled backwards. Yes he fell forwards and yes he was pulled under the chair. It was very funny, but the girl screaming n the office was funnier
I always feel Forman would have been a better friend to House than Wilson, (we need to remember that Wilson and House were not childhood friends), wilson was always over critical of House, always being negative about him, after House and Cuddy got together, wilson never how happy he was for both, and atleast made an effort to say something like you (house) is playing alone if cuddy breaks up with him (some consequences to house action), wilson never said anything like that like if you do something bad to cuddy i will not talk to you or something like i have dealt with lot of shennanigings but this time i will seriously over our friendship if you ruin this with cuddy. Clearly shown in Mirror mirror episode that wilson had dominance over House. 😌 foreman could have been great friend even in earlier episodes he tried to open up with House, he always conflicted with House but didnt rat him out to Vogler (which i expected to do ) but instead it was chase and also when Tritter was irritating House it was again chase and wilson who screwed House over. Whereas wilson never shared any personal information with house and always shooed him away. I really dont know what makers were thinking. 😅
Keeping all the fights aside you know what's most endearing? The fact that people still are so passionate about House that they are still fighting over such a more than a decade old the show. It's not about who is correct, but it's about the love one has for their favourite show even after decades. ❤️
For those who are wondering why Cuddy acts so out of character at the end, her contract expired and the actor of Lisa Cuddy already got another role so the show had to cut her. Also why she is not present in Season 8
Also yeah that makes sense but they could have written it better rather than screwing up her character development the way they did but who knows how much time they actually had to write her out so it sucks but it makes sense
@@melissadelehanty3616 The thing is... House truly was on a path to salvation. This storyline only was established because of contract issues. They made Cuddy push House away so that there is no reason for her to appear in season 8. Had Cuddy and House went on being a healthy couple she would've been an immense beacon of motivation and hope to conquer Houses addiction.
I don’t blame House or Cuddy. They both did the best they could, and they truly loved each other. It’s heartbreaking, but life isn’t fair, and it’s not always someone’s fault. He couldn’t get over his addiction, and she couldn’t stay with an addict.
@@yelenaangeleski3354 nah. He was changing. She led him to believe he was emotionally safe enough to start letting guards down and then she shits all over his heart like this. And I'm a woman saying this, not a man with an agenda
It’s interesting how rough people are on Cuddy. She also thought she was going to die. In the moment she probably realized that if she ever got sick she would immediately have to worry about House relapsing. What a crappy concept … to know if things were ever truly wrong she’ll have to deal with not only the circumstances but a partner who is relapsing.
Yep and facing death shed likely be thinking about her child, and realising she could never be left with house because he puts himself first always and is an addict regardless. The fact he couldn't be there for her at this crises in her life, even if as a friend... That's enough reason to end the relationship. Anyways it's just a show so whatever.
If you date an addict you should expect a relapse or 2. I think it’s understandable given that this was actually an unselfish reason. If he went on a bender that’s a different issue. People with addiction and disorders tend to get more stable as time moves on, especially someone like House who never makes promises-when he does, you know he is willing to finally put in his best effort. She wasn’t willing to give him a chance. She wanted him to be all fixed up for her enjoyment.
Cuddy did the same thing House did, she said you cant truly love someone if youre not willing to go through pain for them, yet, she dumped House because she didnt want to deal with the pain of not being able to change him, hypocrite much?
His pain is momentary; over time, it will pass. Had she stayed with him, she'd have been hurt by his inability to love (anyone) day in and day out, for as long as she put up with such a relationship. So, no: Cuddy is just that rather unusual woman who refuses to fool herself, and others.
@@yelenaangeleski3354 Then she maybe should've used a premise other than "you can't love someone without taking on their problems." They both took an avoidant behavior to free themselves from the pain of the other's problems. She's allowed to make that choice for herself, but she still broke her own premise. What she should've said was that House would never really be happy until he's willing to stop using the vicodin as a cure all.
Yeah. The thing about drug addiction, pretty convenient thing for everyone else to focus on and ignore their own issues. Many drug addicts, in my experience recognize they have a problem. They usually are selective on who they acknowledge that to, because of the harsh judgement and severe criticism they get. Also, addiction is a symptom of a problem, NOT the primary problem. Keeping House off drugs will do anything , really, without treating the ACTUAL problem. Even if you successfully keep àn addict away from drugs, they will find just something else to self-medicate, to find relief, from what he is hiding from. The real issue is usually major depression but it could also be severe anxiety, personality disorders, bipolar disorder (any of the mood disorders), schizophrenia, other psychotic illnesses, eating disorders, etc the list goes on. Without compassion and understanding that addiction is a symptom, you will NEVER help a drug addict. They will never stay clean. Just treating the addiction, the one symptom is how we got to the "once an addict, always an addict" mentality. There has been new and incredible, eye-opening research into addiction but it is still horribly understudied. And it is and has been because of how long people and society have thought of addiction as a character flaw, a moral weakness. It is NOT. Addiction is a symptom of an illness. And it is treatable. But only if you dont get preoccupied with just ONE symptom of the overall illness.
Have only had general, once when getting wisdom teeth out. Fell asleep naturally then the anesthesia kicked in and it was blackness and nothing for what seemed a few seconds then I woke up in the recovery room. No ill effects upon awakening except equilibrium issues
Taking into account House's usual behaviour this is an incredible display of Hugh Laurie's range. (Cuddie's attitude very much reflects the attitude towards addiction that ... a lot of people have)
It's getting better. The more people understand it's a sickness the l ess of a stigma is put on addiction. I've personally seen the change happening in my community. People that would show the scowl of disapproval have now shown the look of sympathy. This show ended a few years ago and more is understood now about how addiction effects the brain/body.
Cuddy: "You can't love someone without making yourself open to their problems, their fears..." Also Cuddy: "I'm breaking up with you because of your problem of addiction and fear of attachment".
@@f12736 I would say it's more like "exactly the point" and not just hipocrisy. She basically admitted she won't be able to commit to him because of his addiction.
This is from my memory, but House changed many things for Cuddy. House had a really good masssager, one that actually aliviate his leg's pain, the problem is that she was one of House's call girls, even if he did nothing with her, so...because of Cuddy, he stopped getting his massages from her. House was never a kid's person, but we all know what he did for Rachel. Cuddy's mom? How hard he worked to safe her? He even was "nice" to her. My point being, he really tried, a lot, he changed and he both were happy. Granted, Cuddy knew Houses's selfdestructive tendencies, but...he hold on to the last moment, he was desperate to save her, so, he relapsed to have his mind clear and think like the genius he really is. After all of that, Cuddy should have given him one last chance...a thin one, but a chance. Then, if he failed, even by a small margin, she had all the right to end their relation. That being said, as everybody else said, the actress was leaving the show, bla bla bla...so, shitty way and reason to end their relation.
“You can’t love someone if you’re not willing to open yourself up to their pain and their fears” Says the woman who leaves him because she can’t/won’t deal with his addiction/pain/fears. I always hated how much she judged him while not caring to understand WHY he’s the way he is.
Thats not the only problem, how can't You see it. And she supported him a Lot with the addiction before. She needed a partner not a selfish inmature child who got scared and don't support her when problems appears.
House should've gone back to therapy. The whole point of rehab was teaching House healthy ways to deal with pain. This was an extreme example, a relapse is understandable but both he and his therapist should've kept working on this.
As an addict I can say, never date someone who is an addict if you aren't willing to understand their struggles. We all became an addict for a reason, be it life trauma or mental health. Once and always addicted to whatever drug you choose to do.

7:18 The problem wasn't that House didn't care, he also didn't choose (only) himself. The Vicodin was his shield so that he can be there for her because he cares, he didn't take drugs to be there for His regular patients but only with her (emotional ties) the real problem she was seeing was House didn't have what it takes to be there for her from his own power rather he seek power from an external sources. This should have been a realization that he also needs support not in a physical way but a mental/emotional way. House stuck by her side no matter what, cuttie on the other hand did not do the same for him rather she protected herself by leaving his side.. what she called selfish in House was a reflection of her as well, perhaps apart of her she doesn't too much enjoy. At the end of the day like does attract like energy.
I haven't watched the whole series, but from what I've seen, this relationship had always been doomed from the start. Still a sad scene when it finally comes crashing down.
Imagine calling him selfish for "not being there" for her, despite being there every second, even giving into his addictive nature so that he could ensure he could be there instead of wallowing in a corner alone and crying... only to then abandon him because you don't want to deal with the pain of him being apparently selfish... look in the mirror :/

She knew House well enough to know he wasn't changing. Not really. He seemed better because he had her, not because he was getting better for real. As soon as the prospect of getting hurt showed up, he turned right back to the pills. Instead of facing the world, he ran from it. Every time. She had a daughter. How in the world could she justify a relationship with a grown man shed been babysitting for ten years who just demonstrated to her that he wasn't strong enough to face difficult reality without vicodin?
Totally agree. As someone who's been in a relationship with an addict, I totally understand Cuddy's actions here. Unless they can deal with the root cause of their addiction, an addict will never truly recover
Had a relationship with an addict with a child in tow as well. Breaking up was and still is the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make in my life. But it isn’t just about cuddy and house is a grown person. She needs a partner who is an equal because she is a parent now, that in itself changes everything and all criteria that’s needed for a real partnership
Okay, my heart is breaking for House. He opened himself up to her and trusted her, all to have her just up and leave him because she couldn't handle being with him. She could of at least been honest and say that she doesn't think they could be a couple, in stead of playing with his emotions like that. No wonder he doesn't open up so easily
She lectured him on the lessons of love and pain and criticizes him for not wanting to deal with pain in life, gets him to open up, then inflicts said pain unto House….SMH
I don't understand the addiction bit. He's not shooting up heroin or snorting meth to ignore his life problems, he takes pain killers because of a medical condition. Sure, the show constantly says House might die of liver disease because of it, but we have seen him off the meds and it was horrible, both the leg pain and the withdrawal. How much does the pain go away after House completes his detox from Vicodin? His leg muscles won't regenerate and the chronic pain will return. Addiction mostly is a bad thing, House might just be an exception.
It's one thing to wholeheartedly UNDERSTAND someone's self-destructive behaviour and a completely other thing to LIVE with someone with self-destructive behaviour. I think it's very mature to know and respect your own limits. When you're with someone who has a serious addiction, you're not really with that person. You're with that addiction. It's all-consuming.
I think I would've been more content with Cuddy passing away from cancer than her breaking up with House. But then part of me thinks they wrote her like this as a way to vent their frustrations with the actress leaving the way she did.

The really maddening thing about this is that Cuddy goes forth to avoid dealing with Houses' addictions by dating people who either don't really feel negative emotions (para-psychopats like that borderline crazy guy who she ends up with) or people who don't have negative events in their lives (like that "perfect guy" that she was dating when house drove his car into her house)....both type avoid pain altogether, while House deals with pain almost daily as a doctor but tempers it with Vicodin and a wicked sense of humor (plus the frequent resolution of medical problems that might turn fatal). Cuddy in this case FLAMES the man who literally made the masses in her lungs go away and in so many ways at so many times has been there for hre and with her.... While he was on Vicodin. As he usually is. ...and she says "no. It wasn't really you with me. It was you and the Vicodin with me". Suddenly when SHE is the patient, NOW she has "clarity". Make of that what you will, folks...make of that what you will.
funny with the theatrical number, when my sister got her heart transplant she was put under for almost a month and she describes a sort of play where everyone she knew were a disney character.
I understand that House is the protagonist and the writing of the show directs the audience towards sympathizing with him, but I still don't understand all of the hate for Cuddy at this point in the story. I'm currently a year and one week sober from everyday opioid abuse and I can tell you that the primary abuse effect they have is dulling emotions, if not getting rid of them entirely. If House relapsed the first time something serious happened, who is to say he wouldn't do this for every hard part of the relationship, leaving Cuddy to take on the entire load of those situations herself?
ppl are just stupid and can only see on or off, Cuddy is a great character while I was sad they broke up the idea that somehow it's Cuddy's fault is kinda ludicrous, most ppl in the comment section clearly haven't been in an healthy relationship, or really don't get that House's self-destructive nature is coming back to haunt him.
I think the hate comes from afterwards when she was with another guy right after breaking up with House, they’re taking that moment and placing it here

@@Splintz246 Very true. Pain pills flood the system and the brain and body stop making natural painkillers that we all have. Depending on how long you've been taking them, ot can be brutal. I feel for people going through this, today and anyday, it's a form of living hell.
You would think someone in the medical profession would know that relapses happened and it's only failure if he doesn't get back on the wagon. You would think someone in the medical profession would also understand that fear of grief and grief itself test us harder than anything else ever will and that he'd let her in enough to fear her situation being able to actually inflict pain and in his own way admitted that instead of running away far before this. You would think that knowing him for this long she would know how radical it is for him to beg her not to leave. But who needs consistent characterization that makes sense when you just want a quick write out and don't want to bother to make it meaningful for a character who's been around for this many seasons in your show. As a writer who would die for a role in a show like this God this makes me angry.
This break up is so stupid. Like she knows he’s in pain every single day. She knows he’s afraid of any kind of pain and yet she still breaks up with him making him distrust relationships more because relationships hurt him. The relationship could have been a start to fixing his pain and distrust problem. That’s why he said being alone is better. He didn’t lie about taking Vicodin, he was really afraid of losing something because losing something hurts him. It’s like every time there is fix for House’s pain, it doesn’t happen. He’s stuck in this unending cycle of pain when all he really wants is to be pain free and have a happy life.

I really hated Cuddy for doing that. House didn't deserve it, he tried his best to be a good boyfriend, so what if he was on Vicodin? Partners are supposed to except each other's flaws. He supported her and that is what matters..
@phynchen8139 No, and I probably wouldn't, but she already agreed to be in a relationship with him, and known him for years. Also, it's a different kind of addiction, he suffered intense chronic pain and the drugs were for that, not for just a "high".
This show did Edelstein wrong. This was them nudging her along because she had the nerve to expect to be treated like an important member of the cast. A male actor wouldn't have been seen as replaceable t&a. Edelstein was amazing in this role. I've loved her since The West Wing, which should have kept her around longer. Producers of House had the nerve to label her demanding and difficult to work with. Yeah. Male actors are such easy-going people pleases. Huddy was doomed because she was going off the show, not because the story didn't work.
To play the broken record for a moment, not only did Cuddy give up on house immediately but if anything she only made him worse by doing it. It almost felt like she was taunting him, which seems to also prove that she could never settle down because even the slightest bend in their relationship for House begininning to struggle and she literally gave up. Perfectly fair of her to do. There was a chance she was on her death bed. She had to worry about herself and her daughter, and she needed support. House couldn't be there for her without relapsing into a drug that causes him severe hallucinations that put him in long hospital stays. This was her hour of need. He could not support her on his own. And the steps he took to be able to meant she would get no time to rest or breath easy before everything became her needing exhaust her already depleeted self helping him through detox
Too many people here are shitting on Cuddy as if it’s wrong for someone to declare strict non-negotiables in the relationship (ex., don’t lie to me, don’t go back on Vicodin, don’t put my child’s life in danger via your drug habits or antics…). Yes, Cuddy hurt House. Yes, it was a little heartless how she went about it. But, in the end, she has set these boundaries for herself and her kid over and over again throughout the series. Especially the lying bit. And for her to know that these boundaries were transgressed during a crucial time of need, I’m sure it made her realize that things weren’t worth fighting for. Again, I’m sad for house, but women are allowed to establish boundaries and leave when their boundaries aren’t respected

Which explains why House took a car for a ride into Cuddy's living room, later on.
Most drug addicts have personality disorders and it’s recommended not to date the personality disordered. But, yes the writers could’ve written more compassionately.

Exactly, I'll never forgive them tbh. Cuddy was one of my favorite characters and they just decided to be petty.
Forman knows something is up within seconds bc House is quiet, alert, and actually listening on a phone call.

And the “I can do better” is really truly what an addict believes each time we say it-it’s really hard to do though
@@melissadelehanty3616 The thing is... House truly was on a path to salvation. This storyline only was established because of contract issues. They made Cuddy push House away so that there is no reason for her to appear in season 8. ‘You’ll choose yourself over anyone else’
The difference in that statement and house’s mindset in the last episode of the show is insane
It’s interesting how rough people are on Cuddy. She also thought she was going to die. In the moment she probably realized that if she ever got sick she would immediately have to worry about House relapsing. What a crappy concept … to know if things were ever truly wrong she’ll have to deal with not only the circumstances but a partner who is relapsing.
...what a HORRIBLE RELAPSE 🤣😅😂
Yes....just knowing that makes the whole thing an illusion to even continue.
Women characters on TV are expected to be much more understanding than men.
Touché. We humans, are so full of hypocrisy.
Ironic that doctors take the Hippocratic oath of doing no harm. 🤔
hypocrite a lot. I kinda' wish they stayed together but I the writers wanted him to suffer to make the bromance in the end possible I guess.

I agree. I felt horrible for him, but I don’t blame her at all, and I don’t understand all the hate she gets.
Why. Why did I watch this again. My heart breaks for House every time :(
Okay, my heart is breaking for House. He opened himself up to her and trusted her, all to have her just up and leave him because she couldn't handle being with him. She could of at least been honest and say that she doesn't think they could be a couple, in stead of playing with his emotions like that. No wonder he doesn't open up so easily
That smile on the floor, that's what she fell for.
She lectured him on the lessons of love and pain and criticizes him for not wanting to deal with pain in life, gets him to open up, then inflicts said pain unto House….SMH
Next to ambers death episode (Wilson’s heart) this was one of the saddest moments of the show
I love the “All That Jazz” take off but with a happy ending….in that she lives…

No, and I probably wouldn't, but she already agreed to be in a relationship with him, and known him for years.
Huddy was doomed because she was going off the show, not because the story didn't work.
nothing in this world could have prepared me for that musical interval
To play the broken record for a moment, not only did Cuddy give up on house immediately but if anything she only made him worse by doing it. He got vengeful and even dangerous in his anger towards her. Leading him to almost become homicidal and drive a car through her dining room.
It almost felt like she was taunting him, which seems to also prove that she could never settle down because even the slightest bend in their relationship for House begininning to struggle and she literally gave up. Cuddy was a great character but I think her theme was just that she almost always seemed to give up by the end.
Ultimate victim blaming comment found.
@@kavyadas5360 Both of them are the victim in this situation, Cuddy has toyed with Houses emotions and skills for years as his boss and then did so as his girlfriend, House was a victim of his abuse but also was emotionally abusive of Cuddy.
Unfortunately this was all due to Lisa's contract being up and due to salary negotiations not panning out to her liking, she decided to leave the show. They had to write a script that unfortunately was out of character for both House and Cuddy in order to write her off. Personally, they should have just killed her off, would have made much more sense and been a good catalyst for House losing it so drastically again. I hated the show when this happened...I basically just pretend the show ended when they first get together and that's it. Lisa leaving really did ruin the character arcs to a point where it just wasn't the same show after that. But to each their own, definitely still love House ❤️
@@beezer81 In a relatively recent video I actually commented something like this, it was on the episode where Cuddy was trying to juggle a bunch of tasks whilst also trying to get health care for the Hospital. She was quite tenacious and more like her usual self.
Glad the show showed Hugh can sing and piano :O
Again, I’m sad for house, but women are allowed to establish boundaries and leave when their boundaries aren’t respected
i forgot that there was a thing about cuddy having this creepy dream. definitely something my mind wanted to wipe clean out of my memory lol
Thank you, lol - I saw comments about how great it was (of course, it was done very well), but it felt like a nightmare, to me
This one broke my heart
That sucks that she dumped him, what an excuse. I hated that she did that. She didn't need to go that far.
3:20 Yo this part feels like it's straight out of Hugh Laurie's comedy glory days in the 70s/80s 😂😂
House almost ended it at the start saying he couldn’t change to avoid getting broken but cuddly said he didn’t want house to change but then cuddly changed her mind and broke house after he was coming out of his bubble
Everyone in here being like "Why did she leave him" and I'm just over here like: "How in the world could she ever date him in the first place. He's a horrible partner."
