Overtourism has become a problem for many countries and cities, including Amsterdam, Bali, Thailand, Italy, and Peru. Why is overtourism bad? What are countries doing about it?

YES! This is SO TRUE! Thank you for articulating this issue which is so pressing but which is so little discussed. I live in Edinburgh, which, like Amsterdam and many other places, has become a victim of its own success in attracting visitors, in the case of Edinburgh, to its Festival and Fringe. Once upon a time, back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, these were outstanding cultural events: now, the Fringe is more like a Zombie Apocalypse, as ten thousand talentless teenage wannabes and a quarter of a million aimless gawpers invade our city, trash the place for a month, then depart, leaving us taxpayers to pay for the clean-up.

Yes, due to post pandemic recovery, people stuck at home for a long time have pent-up demand for travel, and so there's.a tourist explosion in many places. Here in Chiang Mai, it was a huge shock to suddenly have lots of tourists...I know it's good for the economy, but I miss the quiet and beautiful natural environment the past couple of years. So many events going on all the time that it's hard to find a normal day to just work, shop, clean, etc. The main problem about tourism in general is that it is based on something that is inherently unethical and unsustainable: UNEQUAL FOREIGN EXCHANGE RATES and PEOPLE STAYING SHORT TERM IN A PLACE AND SPENDING MUCH MORE BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW LOCAL PRICES. The collapse of tourism during the pandemic (with our Night Bazaar shutting down and Thapae Road filled with homeless people) shows that a city or country should not depend on it as its main or only source of income...it needs to have other backup industries. The Internet has also made travel much less exciting and discovery-oriented than it used to be...more about showing off and less about new experiences. I was so interested to visit so many countries when I was younger, but now, because I can talk with people around the world using Zoom and watch videos on TH-cam of any place, I have little interest to travel anymore.
With the amount of travel now, it's easy to meet people of many cultures while staying in one place and have experiences with those cultures just as intense as if you went to the country...for example, here in Chiang Mai, I've been able to work with scholarship students from. Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Comoros, and Eritrea, countries I wouldn't want to go and stay in to work due to political problems and restrictions on the freedom of females there, but I've been able to learn so much about their cultures. Even living in Kuala Lumpur, I was able to teach Koreans, people from the Middle East, and people from the former USSR, and shared an apartment with Nigerians, and learnt so much about traditional Chinese culture (many of it which no longer exists in China) through Chinese friends and apartment mates and attending Chinese festivals and funerals. So a lot of tourism now is just unnecessary and pointless, but maybe more important in terms of seeing different natural environments than for cultural reasons.
