Aggretsuko season 5 was a lot better than Aggretsuko season 4 - but I can't help but feel sad about the lost opportunities for Haida and Restuko through the seasons. Specifically in the treatment of Haida's character as the series has gone on. What are your thoughts? Is there a haida problem?

After season 3 (just like everyone else), I wanted the show to get better, but the complete opposite happened.
With season 4 - the only interesting parts were 1) 99% of the dynamics (the 1% I found uninteresting *is* Haida & Retsuko) and 2) Himuro
With season 5 - I can’t think of anything great besides 1) introducing Haida’s family and 2) Shikabane (the purple skunk).
What’s even more infuriating with this being the final season is that not *every* character gets a proper sendoff.
      - Fenneko once again gets the shaft
      - Anai is severely sidelined (but in his case, it’s because of the untimely death of Billy Kametz)
      - Tadano’s company never fully got off the ground
      - Inui *never* got her happy ending!!! 😭💔 (She doesn’t even make a cameo this season)
      - Retsuko promising Hyodo about a collab never went anywhere in favor of Retsuko running for politics
      - no scene where Haida (reluctantly) meets up with Himuro (and maybe to some extent, Inui) to patch things up
      - the truck driver who attempted to run over Haida was never found out
P.S. Shikabane *and* Haida’s mother deserve better!

personally I feel like Haida and Retsuko *should not* have gotten together, let alone rushed into getting married. Someone mentioned Fenneko x Tsunoda as a ship and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. I think that's the best ship for her.
But FR, I genuinely like Haida and Fenneko as friends. I did think that it might be a case of "supporting my best buddy with his romance even though I love him too", but that seemed less and less likely as time went on. They would have been sweet, but I made my peace with it not happening.
I honestly can't think of any canon ship in this series that I loved, other than RetsuTadano, but I truly respect the decision for them to part ways as it was such a good lesson.

@@obara7366 Agree, I would've loved to see Tadano and Retsuko together, but they wanted vastly different things so I can agree it was a good decision to not stay. They still cared about each other, wished they interacted more after the break up though. But Haida and Retsuko I've always felt didn't work. It has always looked like they were meant to be end goal without proper work, and after season 4 and Haida's characterization, it just made it all worse. Next to them, Tadano and Haida worked better lmao

That's not a retcon... Japanese people often refer to each other by their surnames if they don't know others in their family. You'll even see people who are in a relationship calling each other by their surnames. It's a very common thing in Japanese culture.
As for why his family calls him Haida, it's likely that he's been named after his father, or they just don't see him as an actual member of their family anymore.

Honestly the first few episodes, Haida was relatable. You stayed loyal and confident for someone else just to have it blow up in your face. Then you spend months unemployed and wounded, afraid to come back to work, and trying to distract yourself, only to notice you traded one cubicle for another.

  • @inkling457
    @inkling457 ปีที่แล้ว +235

Honestly, I was more annoyed by how horrible her "friends" have been towards her. People convincing her to go out with Haida rather than her making her own decisions. People convincing her to be more harsh on him, then being suddenly ok with them living together and her supporting him. Her old idol group FORCING HER TO GET INTO POLITICS AND BEING ON THE SIDE OF SOMEONE WHO LITERALLY HARASSED AND STALKED HER.
God, I HATED OTM Girls in this season. The Leopard guy says she can back out at any time, but would they have LET her? Hell no. Haida was the only one who was on board with her decisions until the end, except when he was nearly run over. At that point, it was too late to back out, and she had already shown so much potential that backing out would be a waste of their efforts.
I feel like Retsuko has learned nothing. People are always trying to convince her of things to do, whether it be right or wrong. She never makes any decisions for herself. The only time she did... was with supporting Haida.
And as much as he isn't the best character... I'm happy that she's happy, and that this is what SHE chose in the end. Not what anyone pressured her to do. Staying with him after he majorly messed up was her choice.

@Random d00d I was so. *Angry.* About how everyone except Retsuko kept treating the Lemur like he was totally justified after his first stunt.
Like, "Oh, he's not a stalker! He's just someone who wants to offer a business/political deal!" NO. HE I S A STALKER. HE BOUGHT HUNDREDS OF TICKETS TO SPEAK TO HER, TRACKED DOWN HER HOME AFTER BEING TOLD NO, FOLLOWED HER HOME, FOLLOWED HER EVERYWHERE, EVEN PLACES HE ISN'T AUTHORIZED, AND REFUSED TO TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER NO MATTER WHAT.
THAT IS HARASSMENT AND STALKING WTAF, WHY WOULD YOU SIDE WITH THAT. JUST BECAUSE HE DIDN'T TRY TO KILL HER DOESN'T MAKE HIM ANY BETTER THAN SEASON 3.
I'll bet it was the jaguar's fault though, always wanting to up their numbers. Knowing Monika, after their first encounter with the lemur, I doubt they'd be so eager to side with him. Even if he just wants to help Japan. The girls know better than that. But the jaguar is their boss. He makes the rules. Fuck that guy.
...Btw, going "she's a people pleaser, she'll do it anyway when pressured enough" is blatant manipulation and toxic on SO many levels. Jesus Christ.
Retsuko deserves better friends. Credit to Haida for one thing, actually listening to her about the psycho lemur man. And letting her do what SHE wants. Though that may be because, well, he's ALSO a people pleaser. Monika was certainly right about that, neither of them have a spine.

Honestly, when you described Haida in the intro of the video, I did not recognize that person or description at all. That really hammered into me how much he has been flanderized. I was always aware of my discontent with the series as it wore on, and Haida has always been my fav, but putting it into perspective like this really highlights what they took from us.
Season 5 didn't feel like a definitive ending at all, but I saw sources and Netflix say that this was the final season. Feels like it got canceled.

You are reminding me of that the introduction of Tadano in season 2 was really where I started to feel a disconnect from the relatable elements of the show I liked in season 1. I later got exhausted with the show when season 3 made Haida into a creep indistinguishable from the stalker fan and abruptly shelved any hope for a satisfying resolution for the sake of resetting the status quo again and keeping this shambling zombie of a show and will they won't they ship going. It sounds like it might have been a good thing I jumped when I did...

You make some really good points! Great video.
Yeah, I feel like Retsuko was a great character back when she wasn't "special" - just a normal young accountant with no extraordinary talents (perhaps except for her death metal voice), no special cult of personality, definitely no magical abilities... Now that she can do anything and everyone suddenly seems to be super drawn to her and blown away by her, it kinda loses me.
And here's what especially bothers me: one of the main parts of Retsuko's arc was that she had to learn to stand up for herself and be more proactive instead of always just doing what she's told, letting everyone walk all over her and bottling up her frustration - or at least that was my impression. But everything that happened throughout the show, her becoming an idol, the whole election plot - everything that the show seems to celebrate as her finally doing just that - only happened because she got roped into it by other people and just couldn't bring herself to say no! She was effectively forced into the whole idol thing, she didn't want to run in the election at all, she had zero interest in politics, but she was too much of a pushover and allowed herself be persuaded... Maybe she ended up getting something out of it, finding her voice or whatever, but that still doesn't change the fact that she didn't do ANYTHING on her own, she never said "no" to anyone in order to do it her own way, she just went along with everything, just like she did at the start... and that's supposed to be her big character evolution?? It frustrates me so much. I kept waiting for her to stand up to that asshole who basically stalked her and tried everything to make her run for his political party (that she knew nothing about and had no connection nor interest in!), I was hoping she would eventually tell him off, finally say no to something and begin to pave her own way instead... but alas!
That aside lol, I actually kinda liked the final season. I mean, I hated the election subplot, but other than that... Definitely a huge improvement from season 4!

    • @efoxkitsune9493
      @efoxkitsune9493 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Well, now that's making it sound like I was expecting some big individualistic resolution - that's not the case. I'm well aware of the cultural differences. But it seems so strange how it's all framed in the context... Like her getting roped and forced into things she didn't want to take any part in was some big accomplishment on her part? She just let herself become a political puppet...! Always working for somebody else's benefit or goals... Where are her own goals or beliefs?? Know what I mean?

I wish they would have taken a route for early season 5 where haida really had to deal with the struggle of being poor/homeless and what he had to do to get out of that situation. Like having him spend more screen time at the construction site to exemplify his trait of being a hard worker. It'd also be a good way to show the misery of being homeless and how hard it is to climb out of that.

Honestly I feel like if they had just ditched the entire political campaign part of the season and dedicated it to Retsuko and Haida learning to build a solid relationship, despite their lack of self confidence, this would’ve been the one of the best seasons. It tackled some harsh but much needed topics like the importance of a support system when you’re down (and an example of what happens when you don’t have one via Shikabane). If it had just focused the second half on the two of them finding a good pace and maybe spent more than 5 seconds on them getting MARRIED, then it would’ve been solid.

I agree with everything that you mentioned in your video! Retsuko was meant to be the everyday office worker with everyday troubles, not what she became in later seasons. As one of the characters mentioned in the show, will Retsuko end up being an astronaut next? I mean probably with the way the show is going haha!
It sucks that this is the final season. I wanted to see more of Retsuko and Haida struggling with everyday couple stuff. Show a bit more conflict of them now living together, sharing their habits of what they do at home. Why was their marriage a "blink and you miss it" moment? That was something she was aiming for since season 1!! I'm honestly surprised that they didn't have Haida fight in the election instead of Retsuko. I mean, he has more stake in it since it's against his family. Why did Retsuko do it? Cuz OTM Girls threw her on stage and Retsuko doesn't know how to say "no"..... Not a fan of that.

Let's be honest, Haida and Retsuko's relationship was a fucking mess thanks to how they treated their relationship in Season 4 and 5. It would have made more sense for Haida and Fenneko to be endgame considering 1. They had more chemistry 2. Fenneko very clearly had a thing for him 3. It would have been a perfect punchline for Fenneko's whole hypocrisy joke considering all the shit she talked about love and marriage for her to fall for and get married to Haida. 4. I don't feel that 'mooching' is the right word to use for Haida? If you mean the fact alone that that his father was paying for the apartment, it should still be taken into account that before the end of season 4, Haida had been working all that time, not exactly doing nothing. I think it should be noted that Retsuko's parents also pay for her apartment, as implied by her mother making a spare key for herself. I've heard it's not uncommon for parents in Japan to do this for their kids.
I do think that with this fact, it still isn't great to be unemployed for so long (not even trying) without your parents' knowledge while they're paying somewhere for you to live. In Haida's case, I guess his father didn't actually care whether or not he was working as long as he wasn't causing a scandal. So hmm, it's complicated, especially when your family is literally pressuring you into accepting money (which in the end, Haida refused).
I actually did sympathize for Haida's gaming addiction because it was clear that burnout had gotten to him, and I can understand him not wanting to give up a moment where his life for once isn't revolved around work. We are introduced to Shikabane this season who feels similarly to Haida but has completely given up the chance at a stable life because work in Japan is so demanding.
I don't just feel Haida was being lazy and selfish. When he gets kicked out of his apartment, he can't even stand the thought of burdening Retsuko by asking her for help, and he nearly endangers himself in doing so before Shikabane helps him out. I think he messed up, for sure, but I understood how he got there. The biggest difference between Haida and Shikabane is that Haida actually had people he could rely on. Just because someone is more fortunate doesn't mean they are mooching.

I got disappointed by that rushed marriage ending. In real life that level of chemistry (not even friends, let alone lovers) never works out.
They should've changed Haida's whole personality in order for Retsuko to fall for him. They haven't
So this ending kinda makes no sense
This character had much more chemistry with Fenneco and that dog lady lol

Glad you got onto season 5! I'm sad that it's the final season, because I'm going to miss the videos you make on this show, but I think they finished it on a good note. They did just kinda tack on another flaw onto Haida, which I didn't love, but at least they resolved that pretty quick. And I feel happy that Haida was able to kind of go against his family and fight for what he believed in by the end, instead of just being pushed around by his brother and father. Overall though season 5 was such an improvement from season 4, considering I also was hesitant to watch it. I'm glad I did though.

Retsuko was an idio† to leave Tadano, and Haida was an idio† to get with her.
Also, I hate how this show went from a relatable story about a girl trying to make it in a sexist, soul-crushing corporate world, to....a total Mary Sue that everyone adores and fawns over, she's a metal pop idol, now she's dating a billionaire, now she's an enormously successful streamer, and now she's a politician. Wat.

I really miss how Retsuko, despite doing her best, still didn’t live up to her own expectations (pushed on her by familial, societal and workplace expectations and standards). I miss her learning to enjoy new things and finding out what she wants out of life… It was extremely relatable to me as a 23 year old woman. Now… it’s just bizarre.
I also don’t like Haida x Retsuko. I like Tadano x Retsuko more but I still think a more grounded but passionate match would have been better. The biggest appeal was always Retsuko navigating the frustrations of modern life as a young woman. Would have loved to see her meet her match and go thru the struggles of domestic bliss.

It’s funny in that in Season One, I had wanted them to get together, and then as the seasons go on, it actually happens and now it’s a “Be careful what you wish for” deal since now that their together, I feel like it’s a cop out.

I think this is a good analysis of Season 5! I did find myself invested in the plot in Season 5, but the more I think about it, the show did kind of go off the rails with the characters doing things past season 3 where the show still had some relatable messages. I think it was an interesting way to leave off the show, but I do feel like they could have taken more time to develop or fix up Haida’s character or so. I still enjoyed watching till the end, and seeing Shikabane’s little arc was very nice.

For the HR relationship i have a point to say showing it's actualy a realy good point for both of them : the fact that Retsuko is here the leader in the relationship.
Other Retsuko lovers were definetly the leaders, not caring for Retsuko as much as they care for them to live with her. Each time the choice they give her is to abandon what she is, what she do, to become dependent of them. They, andmost of the people, threat her as "weak minded fool who need to be directed by a stronger person in her couple life".
But for Haida, it's different. Retsuko is strong even if she dont show it or know it. He realised this hided strenght of her destroyed by toxic people abusing her. Even Fenneko is terribly negative with her, saying her weakness constantly. But Haida go in total opposite. He dont try to control her but to push her to her best and she do same with him. She is the leader of their couple and it male her evolve as well.
And that's what is interesting in their couple. They push each other to do better and actualy achieve greatness together. They are not "the best couple" by people standart but they have a good functioning.

For some reason Season 3 didn't hook me as much and i lost interest, with the same repetitive nature. Eventually season 4 came out and we did not like the arc in which Haida and Retsuko were going and dropped it. In the 1st season I was shipping Retsuko and Haida, they seemed to be such a cute couple, but after season 4 I couldn’t recognize Haida anymore. He’s not the guy he used to be, he’s so problematic.
And now that they are officially together, they still seem to be buddies who live together. I’m a western girl, now I live in Japan, and what I can say is…maybe we watch this show with our western lens, but those characters were inspired in the real japanese citizens. Haida and Retsuko act like a japanese couple. They are cold like that, they don’t say “I love you”, they don’t hug, they don’t hold hands. Despite that, I really would like to see them taking care for each other more. Man, it’s so unsatisfactory, every time that Retsuko cried I just wished that Haida would hold her and tell her everything is going to be okay, that he’s there for her…but we never get anything… this kind of affection is better shown in anime, but Aggresive Retsuko is more “realistic” about the japanese people behavior.

  • @drax7950

I thought it was fine if not a little rushed as for Haida he was just doing what he did in the other seasons his problem is that he desires to be needed because retsuko couldn't come to terms with her love for him a problem that she also gets over could have used a season in between this but it ended well enough

as mentioned in the video, the biggest flop for me was the fumbled relationship...hard not to feel disappointed when Retsuko and Haida's "will they/won't they" dynamic is a significant part of the show overall, only for the early part of their relationship, which i think could have been the most interesting development, was sort of skipped over in that awkward surreal mini montage. I think it could have been a more interesting take for Haida's crush to remain unrequited and to develop the friendship by itself instead

    @TelPhi_ ปีที่แล้ว

I mean... I guess it _did_ feel self aware this time, but I feel like that doesn't really makes it any better.
Season 5 wasn't much better than season 4 imo, the first 8 episodes felt better for sure (even though Haida was being a different character than he used to be) but in the last 2 episodes it suddenly tried to rush this whole gigantic nonsensical subplot that should have received its own season instead, just like the whole new CEO + Haida boss subplot in season 4
Instead of cutting content like many people suggest online, I feel like it would have been better to split season 4 and 5 into 2 other seasons to flesh things out and make stuff happen for reasons that actually make sense, as I like some of the ideas from these seasons (included the relationship between Haida and Retsuko!) but feel like they simply failed in their execution. I wouldn't want the show to have ended on season 3 like others do, as there's plenty of plot points, characters and other stuff that could be expanded upon. Seasons 4 and 5 had a lot of potential to do exactly that, but failed (aside from expanding upon Ton's character imo). I'm sad Aggretsuko ended not because it, well... ended, but because of the nonsensical, underwhelming finale that leaves many plot points unanswered.
But these are just my thoughts of course. I know there are lots of different opinions on this online.

I can't believe no-one came up with the idea for Haida and Retsuko to be dating at the start of the series, or at least to have them meet up and start dating in the first episode and stay together from then on. It would make the series a whole less messed up, by removing that cliched and annoying "will-they-won't-they" subplot. Not to mention it would prevent all that random Haida hate, and everyone saying that "(insert random character here) would have been a better match for Haida". Because frankly, I'm sick of all that! I mean, if Rarecho/Yeti/whoever's in charge really wanted them to be a official couple - for merchandising purposes and all that - they should have put them together straight away.
And of course, much like her death metal hobby, Retsuko should keep this love affair hidden from her mom. Not because it's the right thing to do, but A: because it's what she would do - let's be real here, and B: FOR THE PLOT.
