Sir Richard Francis Burton deserves at least an Honorable Mention, homeboy took a spear to the face, in one cheek out the other, played dead till the attackers left, then swam out to the ship offshore (still with spear in face), also Mecca, sought out source of the Nile, amongst others, hardcore linguist, and a master swordsman, with one seriously badass mustache.
Sir Richard Francis Burton gets my vote. Dude’s life was so nuts that I don’t even think I ultimately envy him. He’s an enigma to me too, because at first I wrote him off as a psycho/sociopathic, malcontented, blue blood. An actual one, because of THAT ONE INCIDENT in his history, IYKYK… *Shivers* But, then I thought about it further… He rolled solo on his adventures to foreign lands, he couldn’t have possibly spoken the language of most of those he came in contact with, and as an outsider caveman-brain socializing would’ve only kept him alive up to a point. So, the guy was just insanely skilled at impressing/entertaining anyone he came into contact with. And, he had to have known how to connect with some of these peoples’ leaders in an emotional way as well to remain alive so long. Anyways, no other man’s memoirs, biographies about him written by others, etc. have ever left me more astonished than his.
The greatest explorer by distance travelled is Tom Thompson (1770 1857) who travelled some 90k kilometers and who mapped The Canadian west covering 1/6 the area of North America
"Behind the wheel the mileage clicking west, I think upon Mckenzie, David Thompson and the rest. Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me..."
I don’t think there’s a greatest ever. There are numerous amazing explorers throughout history. If you’re going straight off of distance, Polynesian navigators need to be in the conversation….
This is the first time every question is wonderfully put and explained. As well as the responses, those too were wonderfully answered. It's inspiring are there tours to the Amazon?
Ibn batuta of morroco in 13th century was one of the greatest explorer , exploring 44 countries in 30 years he saw mongol Empire, islamic Empire, indian Empire etc
Mungo Park - Scottish dude who basically (as I understand it) walked into the depths of Africa and risked life and limb to document what was there. Didn’t live too long but made some waves. Joshua Slocum - his “Sailing Alone Around the World” is a great read, amazing that he took up the sea late in life, just said fuck it, gonna go sail around the world … and he did 😛👍
Does it ever occur to jungle explorers to get lower to the ground rather than to hack it up? Do the people who actually live in the Amazon hack their way through or do they have more gentle ways of navigating it?
Funny how all the haters from Rosalie’s clips that call him a fraud and a liar don’t have much to say when the audience is brought with him straight to the jungle for the interview itself. Kinda hard to doubt a guy while he’s sitting barefoot in the jungle telling you about his experiences in the jungle Good move, guys.
haven’t watched episode yet but i clicked on this and i was wondering, why does Lex look like he’s sweating a little bit?😅 then I saw some bugs flying around and it all came together in my brain and I was like ohhhhhhh cool he did the episode with this guy outside at night in the jungle?! Hellzzz to the yah!
Ehhh Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigated the globe and died in the process his ship was rotting from the voyage, discovered numerous places etc..anyone else is a nobody compared to him

Lmao it took me a second to realize they’re in the fuckin jungle 😂
Lmao Lex is sitting there about to pass out from heat exhaustion just sweating profusely wearing his signature suit 😂
@@connorriley7511 😭😭😂
Me too. I was thinking " what is Lex on ?!" LOL
The suit never dies with lex
why would it?
Lex is waiting on the next ‘Men in Black’ movie audition.
Look like he about to die in that suit
Sweating his balls off 😂
Lex can put on regular clothes probably and go around unrecognized lol
I felt like lex was slightly delirious and on the verge of passing out through this whole interview lol
Lol yessss!!!

He discovered nothing just rediscovered and of course he and the British tried to take credit like everything else they did
That guy JJ seems unreal. It would be amazing a podcast whith him and Paul together. Make it happen Lex, please!

We need more guys like the two of you in this world! Thanks for a fun excerpt.
Never seen Lex not being clean shaven 0_o
Right
Paul is such a fabulous story teller
"Dude, f*ck the jungle" that's funny. I can't even do Florida 😂.
The greatest explorer by distance travelled is Tom Thompson (1770 1857) who travelled some 90k kilometers and who mapped The Canadian west covering 1/6 the area of North America
David Thompson
Distance travelled doesn’t equate to greatest explorer…
"Behind the wheel the mileage clicking west, I think upon Mckenzie, David Thompson and the rest. Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me..."
Look up ibn battuta, that guy travelled 120,000 km through the world and went through much interesting locations that west canada...
I don’t think there’s a greatest ever. There are numerous amazing explorers throughout history. If you’re going straight off of distance, Polynesian navigators need to be in the conversation….
Lex's mic looking like a face in firelight on the bottom will haunt my dreams forever
Protip: What is not visible to the camera is that Lex is wearing shorts and has hiking shoes on.
Lex always seems like he is slowly falling asleep while asking questions and making comments. This clip even more so
He's wearing a suit in the middle of the Amazon Jungle. He's probably half-delirious from the heat and exhaustion.
Underrated
Mungo Park - Scottish dude who basically (as I understand it) walked into the depths of Africa and risked life and limb to document what was there. Didn’t live too long but made some waves.
Joshua Slocum - his “Sailing Alone Around the World” is a great read, amazing that he took up the sea late in life, just said fuck it, gonna go sail around the world … and he did 😛👍
Slocum is one of the most unfortunate last names I’ve ever heard
@@Cloudy_Jonesit’s actually a great name.. quickcum would be unfortunate
@@Cloudy_Jones lols … well, better than Fastcum i guess? Great read at any rate, check it out!
Less than 400 people have solo sailed around the world
Thousands have climbed everest
This is crazy. Jungle life is sooo insane to me. I get it though, i understand. Well done gentlemen...
Why can’t we hear the jungle?
man i wish i could tell stories like that guy! so cool!
Hearing that he saved his own life multiple times by using humor and humanity is just a beautiful thing.
Imagine being a hunter or whatever in the Amazon and you stumbled across these 2 white men one in a suit sat at a table 😂😂😂
What about Ibn Battuta? He was exploring Africa, Asia and Europe as well as the Middle East.
Freaking fascinating Lex way to live! Spectacular!
Beautiful conversation.
Does it ever occur to jungle explorers to get lower to the ground rather than to hack it up? Do the people who actually live in the Amazon hack their way through or do they have more gentle ways of navigating it?
11:25 ... black legend and you keep spreading it.
Most likely Ernest Shakleton, and more so Tom Cream, Antartic Explorers were some of the Bravest..
Reading another book about them. Those guys were TOUGH! stupid tough.
As a surveyor, i never leave the truck without that machete
God I love this and I love lex Fridman.
The dude being interviewed looks like the guy he’s talking about. Coincidence? I think not
Funny how all the haters from Rosalie’s clips that call him a fraud and a liar don’t have much to say when the audience is brought with him straight to the jungle for the interview itself. The suit made me laugh my balls off but Lex disappointed you never had a shave m8 , scruffy boy 😂

He’s got a strong nose for history

Ehhh Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigated the globe and died in the process his ship was rotting from the voyage, discovered numerous places etc..anyone else is a nobody compared to him
I wouldn't go that far, Leif Ericsson and Percy Fawcett were both great explorers
That’s what America had you read in a schoolbook lol
