Funny. I'm playing that for the first time right now, and yes, it does count. It's interesting to see how many of the elements that make up modern Mario games started in Yoshi's Island, yet it is its own original style. Legit "platformer" for sure.
Definitely Super Mario World. It introduced Yoshi, Mario's trusty steed. It also had the cape feather which remains to this day the best flight power up in a Mario game ever. Every level design was unique, there were so many secret levels and pathways, and the controls were the smoothest they've ever been. It's colorful and charming, has the most memorable Mario tunes. Fun cut scenes every time you beat a castle. The boss battles were all different and it properly launched the SNES, which is arguably the best Nintendo console in existence.

My favorite Mario game, as cliche as it is, Super Mario Bros. 3. As fun World was, the Cape Feather made it very easy to beat many levels. I prefer the more challenging SMB3, to be honest. Great level design, fantastic looking 8 bit graphics, catchy 8 bit music, tricky bosses, and my preferred map screen. It's too much fun :)

The New Super Mario Bros games have been generally too easy to get game overs that this game perfectly mocks that concept by giving you countless lives. The game, presenting you the Invincibility Leaf is the real game-over in this game; saying "DUDEEE YOU'VE BEEN FAILING MISERABLY IN THE GAME" And if you're asking a challenge, go try out the nerve wreck and impossible packs, they are even harder than most of the levels of SMB: The Lost Levels.
"You're only there because Mega Man taught you the fortitude it took to beat a game".............So true! MM definitely taught the player to value lives!

I already beat the game with almost all star coins and it only took me around 7 hours with 1 1/2 hours of playing it a day which is probably the fastest time I beat a Mario game the game is just too easy.
If I were you, I would throw into consideration with the "worth the rental" rating, if a game can be beaten within 3-5 days. I'm just sayin. I almost never buy games anymore just because I can beat most of them these days within that amount of time. Otherwise, I'm glad you came up with a rating system for games. It basically means you'll probably start doing more game reviews (right?) and I see nothing wrong with that since you've been the most reliable/my favorite reviewer of all time.
Super Mario Bros and Super Mario 3 were great, but there were tricks in those to earn crazy amounts of 1 ups as well. The original had the green turtle on the stairs you could use to earn 1 ups until it displayed them as symbols. You missed that there was a beetle on stairs in a later level.

At this point, I think the point of lives in Mario is less "worry about running out" and more "see if you can max them out." In Super Mario 3D Land, for example, the max is over 1000 and it took a little longer than getting 100% in the game for me to do that. I needed to use some "infinite lives" tricks at the end to get there, so I would say the lives are well-balanced. Even back in Super Mario World you didn't really need to worry about running out of lives, really only SMB1-3.
Jeremy, I'm glad that you're doing 3DS games reviews again. You should review Resident Evil: Revelations for the 3DS man. In my opinion is way better than RE:6, it has a great storyline, lots of characters, great gameplay, gorgeous graphics, and its pretty scary at some times. Overall its a great game man, you should definitely review it!
Sunshine definitely. I feel like it was underrated for like a year after released, then everyone said "hey, Nobody likes this so I'll like it to be unique!" but by then everyone liked it. It just had awesome atmosphere and challenging gameplay: the hardest 3D mario by far. Also, on your comment about the difficulty, No mario game has really been that tough since mario bros 3, since you could just continue or save. And lives didn't really matter either since there was no real penalty for dying.
Also, if you would ever consider reviewing a computer game, I would love for you to try out one of the Nancy Drew PC games, mostly because I can totally see you hating it, lol.
Gold coins in the Mushroom Kingdom have almost no value, due to their abundance in the Kingdom. Mario isn't greedy, he's a hoarder, who wants to live forever.

yknow, its almost impossible for me to choose just one favorite mario game, they all hold such fond memories for me. most of all would be mario world and mario 64, mainly because in my childhood these were probably the 2 games I played the most. other than that, definitely mario 3. I wasn't able to play that as much considering I only got to when I went to visit my grandmas house, which I did more often as a kid. whenever I think of mario 3 I remember playing it at my grandmas house as a kid.

Is it a bad game? No. But it's the same 2D Mario game we've been getting for nearly a decade with little things added that should have been dlc. The games from the 80s and 90s always had something and exciting that made them stand out from the rest, graphics, music, it was always a new adventure. All this "new" series is doing is relying on nostalgia. It pulled off better than Sonic 4 did, but how long will Nintendo make us wait for something actually NEW?
I kind of feel as most games now have tons of respawn points I don't think the 500 lives are terrible or something. But I suppose with that it's still not hard to get through the levels
