Comic Tom and Jeff I just got back into the hobby a year ago. Had my entire comic collection lost in the CA fires in 2016, in that collection I lost ASM 1. The insurance company did not except any of my comic claims because no receipts or grades! ASM is out of reach for me now 😭. So I was able to get the next best thing!
Btw every book I own is slabed and insured correct!
Please reply to make me feel better!
I am the proud owner of fantastic four 13 which has the first add for ASM 1!
Do you think adds for books inside books brings up their value?
    Great show much love,

First of all, I love your videos. The information that you and your friends provide is awesome and I like the enthusiasm and positivity that you bring. You asked for stories of seller regret. My biggest is that I owned 2 copies of New Mutants 98 in 9.8. One had white pages. I bought them in anticipation of a movie. It wasn't coming and it wasn't coming and I gave up. I sold both for around what I paid for them which was around $300 each. If only I had at least kept one.

3rd comment, I know... Anyway. Yeah, DC Silver keys are WAAAAY undervalued. Hawkman #4 in a 9.6 should easily be a $20k+ comic, period. Holy shit, there are only 15, yes 15 total, 9.8s and 9.6s on the CGC census, and 3 on CBCS. ALL Silver and Bronze DC keys, and even a lot of Golden Age keys, are almost criminally underappreciated and ignored. There should be NO WAY I could buy a Batman #20 (1944), in a CGC 9.2, for LESS than a 9.8 UF4 Djurdjevic variant, but it's true (I did it a month ago). It's so absurd it makes my head hurt.

For example, what do you recommend for modern comics when it comes to Mylar? Would you recommend BCW 7 1/4" 2 Mil Silver Mylar to go with BCW 7" backing boards, or...BCW 7" Current Age Mylar to go with BCW Modern 6 x 5/8" boards?

This is kind of interesting. I don't know why, but for my PC I kinda PREFER buying pre-code Horror in low grade. Most books in that genre look cooler/more authentic with considerable wear, like around a 2.5-4.5, even down to a 2.0, as long as the full comic is intact. Plus, of course there's the added benefit that they're a lot cheaper than high or even mid-grade, as well. So I can definitely say my 50's EC collection may not be "pristine", but I love them all the same, and I have some great memories of buying them at different shops and shows, all over the Southeast USA, when I was a kid. I paid only $40 for a VG Crypt of Terror 17, because I hounded the shop owner for 3-4 hours (he had it priced at $60), because it was all the money I had and I was only 15. 😁 To this day, if a teen-ager comes into my store and shows some moxy, a little extra tenacity when bargaining for a book, I'll cut him a better deal than I would for an adult. Because I remember how tough it was to be taken seriously when you're a young collector.

Back in the mid-80s when I was a kid there was a small comic shop in a neighboring city. My mom would take me there every few weeks to pick up my pulls. One Saturday we walked into the store, and I noticed something interesting in the small glass case at the counter.
An Amazing Fantasy 15. I felt like Indiana Jones, and I just found the Holy Grail.
I was a rabid reader at the time, but I was just getting into the collecting side of the hobby. The owner let me hold it, and I just stared at it for a moment. I had bought an Overstreet guide a few months before, and I had some barebones grading skills. The owner said it was a G/VG, and my skills-meager as they were-lined up with that.
He wanted $100 for it. $100. One hundred one dollar bills.
I thanked him for letting me hold it, shopped a bit, got my pulls, and then we left. When we got into the car, I explained to my mom the significance of that book. I told her that $100 was absolutely insane for that book in that condition.
She said she agreed. She’d never pay $100 for a book that looked that bad.
    ???
Wait, had I just stepped into a sitcom where someone’s statement got taken the EXACT opposite of how it was meant? Yes. Were hilarious hijinks about to ensue that would be resolved happily in less than 30 minutes? Tragically, no.
I reiterated just how big this book was-and even back then this was a unicorn among unicorns-and how cheap it was for the condition. It was worth $100 even if it didn’t have a cover. My mom wouldn’t budge. She said it was a ripoff and that he was trying to take advantage of us because I was a new collector. She said he would come to his senses, and I gathered that she was going to wait him out and offer him much less the next time we stopped by.
The store shut down suddenly a few weeks later. We never saw the owner or the AF15 ever again. Even now, my mom still tells the story every couple of weeks to anyone who will listen about how we missed buying the first appearance of Spider-Man for $100. And sometimes I guess she’s just thinking out loud because I’m the one she’s telling. Yeah, Mom, I know. I was there. 😂
I try to make her feel better by saying that we had no idea how valuable the book would be someday. It’s a lie, but I still tell her. Because I knew. Any collector would’ve known. In a strange way, the book’s skyrocketing price over the last few years has made the pill a little easier for both of us to swallow. Because even I couldn’t have predicted just how big it would be, how huge the entire market would become.
If I had known, my fourteen year old self at the time perhaps would have dusted off some of the skills that the five year old me had mastered. Maybe I would have thrown a tantrum and rolled around on the floor screaming like an idiot until she gave in and bought the book.
And that would’ve been really pathetic-unless it got me the book. No, it would’ve still been pathetic and totally not worth it. Maybe.
Anyway, that’s my story of the one that got away. Thanks, Mom. I still love you anyway.

I have a real bad sellers regret. When I was a kid. 12-13 yrs old. I was paid to clear out a basement. I got to keep whatever was in there. Found a closet full floor to ceiling of goldband silver books. Which I have most of today. 1 of those was an ASM #1. My cousins and extended family loved to fish. I wanted to be apart of those adventures. I traded my #1 for a used old deep sea pole. Which ended up breaking on the 2nd fish I almost caught.

Growing up I passed on a Tales of Supense 39 in a mid Grade for $200 over $25 . I was haggling with the Comic Shop owner. His bottom line was 200 and I wanted it at 175. This was all before the MCU movies. He then offer me a Daredevil 1 in again in a mid grade and I turned around and told him Daredevil sucks and ended up walking away not buying anything. Sometimes haggling and egos will definitely cloud our best judgment.

    My BIG Seller Regret -
Story #1 - Last year I discovered comic book dry cleaning and pressing and getting comics graded. As a test I picked a comic I bought back in '79, X-Men #120. It came back from CGC a rare 9.8. Then I heard the rumor that Alpha Flight was soon to be announced as part of the MCU so I hung onto the slab waiting, and waiting and waiting for the announcement, all the while the FMV fluctuating by $$$. Eventually I got tired of waiting and sold it for $3,000 to a very happy customer. Then two months later one sells for $500 more, and a month after that one sells for $1,200 more than my sale, and THEN last week you report one sold at auction for $11,250! You could hear me from a mile away screaming in agony. I also had #121 at CGC 9.8 that I sold a couple months ago and has more than tripled in price from what I sold mine for.
Story #2 - Buyer's and Seller's Regret - My LCS would put some comics in my pull list that he thought worth picking up. One of those was TMNT #1 first print. I saw a dozen or more still on the shelves and almost added 2-3 more to my bag but changed my mind, and then I did something really stupid, I put the comic he pulled for me back on the shelf. I did partially redeem myself by picking up issue #2 which I sent into CGC and it came back a 9.4, probably what issue #1 would be if I had bought them. It also has been selling for 50% higher than what I sold it for a few months ago.

In February, sold a ASM 361 Newsstand 9.6 for $300. Clearly should've held until the trailer.

I enjoy your videos and purchased a 500+ lot of old comics from an estate sale 10 years ago. I had purchased the guys BMW a few weeks prior to his estate sale. He was an older guy and he had a ton of comics from the late 60's to the mid 80's that his kid collected. The comics were worthless at the time and I picked them up for $20. My brother and I tried to sell them on Ebay at the time 2011 and only a few of them had a value of like $7-15. I decided to not waste the time to list all of them and had my brother the comics to our local comic dealer. They rejected the pile of comics and said there was nobody collecting comics from those years. I'm in the process of bagging and backing each comic and will sell all of them on Ebay for an average of $10. Crazy how something that was worthless 10 years ago is now very collectible and I think I have $5000 worth of comics with around 20 hours of work to list all of them. I might submit some of the key date ones to CGC and I find it interesting that they charge about the same as NGC does for grading coins but the turn around times are 100 days. Is CGC the best company for grading?

I have a true seller regret about 20 years ago I was at a yard sale and asked if they had any comics sure enough they had a box in the house that they do not know what they had in it were a ton of old late golden age and early Silver age books. I told them what they had and as a reward the lady told me I could pick any for I want it for free. All I remember is that in the lot was an FF number four the first submariner. I was so excited and like a fool ran to my local CS And was told oh it’s in bad shape and took $12. It was probably a 5 to 5.5 but me being as impulsive as I was sold the damn thing. Major seller regret

Right around 2014 I was hunting at a local chain in San Diego, and found 10 copies of the bagged Ultimate Fallout #4 books, between 2 of their 8 stores. They were all cover price, so I bought them. Also, at these 2 stores were a total of 12 copies of the Djurdjevic variant. They were asking $12 a piece. I grumbled, because I didn't wanna pay $12 a piece. So, I grabbed the 2 best copies and grumbled paying $24 for the 2. A year later, I was unemployed and needed rent money. So, I sold those 2 Djurdjevic variants, an Incredible Hulk #180 autographed by Trimpe and Wein, a couple Edge of Spidervers #2s, a couple of regular bagged Ultimate Fallout #4s, and a few other things,...probably 15 to 20 books in total,...for $420. Because of this, I cry myself to sleep some nights. 😂😂😭😭😭😂😂

I have mentioned this before in the comments but I once sold a solid mid grade DD 1 for $100 and at the same time a FF 10 for $100 as well. Really needed some cash at the time. Buts that’s not the worst I once sold an entire long box full of silver age FF and amazing Spider-Man for $400 there was asm 6,29,30,31,40,50,39,60-70,100.....and to top it off I really had a tales of suspense 39 at about a 3.0 in there too. This was in 2008 and I was caught up in a really bad situation and needed cash immediately. A month later i sold a combo of FF 48 and 49 for $250. Both were maybe a 3.0 but still. Biggest regret considering comics EVER!!! I can only image the value I had there.

At that time I was not In a great place financially, so I sold a first appearance of Blade, Vision, and Silver Surfer along with a nice copy of Iron Man #1 (actually the guy bought like #1-#10 from me) so I would be able to take care of my son! No regrets, but I wish I still had them, because I doubt I'm going to be able to ever afford them again with college tuition lurking down the road. Side note: I worked at a comic shop and a customer brought in a Hulk #181 which I wanted so bad ( stamp and all). I worked out a deal with the owner to buy it and was literally moving money from my account to a credit card, she sold it to someone else right in front of my face. Tom, although I realize the extreme rarity of 9.9 Newsstand, I have to say GI Joe #1 has never excited me -- I passed on it as a teen, and back then (stupidly) I also passed on MANY non-newsstand Direct bagged editions of GI Joe 1 that I came across. There was belief by some that practically all bagged non-newsstand copies were reprints, so I had some uncertainty. This unfounded "sweeping" bias still existed decades later -- for example, around 2000 a dealer tried to argue with me that the Whitman editions of Star Trek from the '70s were reprints. Of course, he was wrong. Sorry about the long comment. Thanks for the video.

Horror is fun. I'm very nostalgic. I love both older Horror and SciFi. Is their a guide for just horror or Sci-Fi comics?

Great episode and some solid words of advice. But I can help but think that some key data is being lost on the sales, of bigger books of course, with them being moved on social media platforms. I know that data is acquired from eBay and auction sales for what big books are selling for. But I am sure that there have been undocumented sales on social, and they are not being recorded. I bet that there are significant difference in a sale, possibly missing thousands, on say Instagram not being recorded on GP. I also agree that DC keys are sleepers right now!

My holy jebus. December 2019, flew to California to look at a collection containing vf ff5 Lee/Kirby splash auto, nm hulk 180/181. Many many others. Didn’t buy for 28k. Offered 21k she didnt even counter. Another guy had offered 28k which she thought was guaranteed. When the dealer got there after us he offered 13k and ended up paying our price. I even told her to submit the books to Cgc and sell them on eBay. She was clueless. It hurts so bad.

New subscriber looong time comic collector. Love the videos. All this slab stuff I don't get. I'm not going to knock it because I believe "to each their own". I do wonder though, will the slabbed books always be worth more, or do you think a generation of collectors may get annoyed by them, and a TON of books get cracked open. There will always be the collectors who want to feel, read and smell, the actual real deal, not rely on a TPB, or complied volume of single issues.

Was actively searching for a clone wars #1 3 years ago, looking at several 9.8 copies of the 1 of 1000 variant but couldn't find one for under $300, passed on several copies @9.8 that were under $500...biggest "buyers regret" next to passing on a Xmen #4 8.5 unpressed for 1500$ just last year about 6 months before wandavision...ouch!!!

Sellers regret. 2 big ones. I bought a Amazing Fantasy 15 in 1.0/2.0 or Good minus in 1987 for $80. The only issue was the cover was almost detached and it had marvel chipping on the edges. The book was however very clean. It still had cover gloss, was flat, and off white pages. Sold it plus 14 in F, and Ann 2 in vf for $1600 in 1998. Today these would bring 20,000 at least. I also was buying up every copy of Iron Man 55 I could find in the mid 90s for $5 to $10 each for Fine to Very Fine copies. I had 10 copies at one point. I sold them all around that $30 range each. I know I made money, but I could have made so much more.

Hey comic fan, fan of the channel ! I was looking to purchase a Wolverine #1 (1988) CGC graded. But I don’t really know any trustworthy online sellers. Not sure if you have one to sell or know a reliable seller , that would be great.

    • @A100-y2c

I think a lot of people didn't realize the significance of that issue when it hit the stands, because Wolverine was already the cover feature of Marvel Comics Presents -- it was overlooked to some extent.
