That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing. New 52 was my gateway into DC Comics. I love them now more than ever, but outside of Batman I’m not sure when I would have decided to give Dc a real try outside of the New 52.
Funnily enough I just started reading new 52 wonder woman the other day, and I think it's great. Every story I hear about the new 52 from the production side of things makes it feel like a miracle that any good books came out of that lmao
There were definitely some highlights, and stories I still reread now. Court of Owl’s, Animal Man, Lemire’s run on Green Arrow, the first few arcs of Wonder Woman.
@@TheComicsPals I hope they've learned from their mistakes during this period. I guess they don't have the power they did have while at a DC. At the moment they're an employee of the creatives who are also the executives.
Im not well versed so forgive me but think one of the best things to come out of new 52 was the animated movies/shows. It definitely painted it in better light for all of us kids growing up, would really love it if you guys did a review on them, I know it’s a lot
The New 52 got me to buy Wonder Woman for the first time, I loved that run. I honestly think it's in the top 5 runs on the character in terms of consistent quality and originality
Do a deep dive on the 90s Marvel bankruptcy Sean. Other than that loved the episode. Interesting to hear about the chaos. And am I still the only one to have made their own Palsverse character
Thanks Spiral! That's a great suggestion, adding it to the list. You actually still are the only one yeah! It's a title only you hold. I like that for you, it fits.
Batwoman is my favorite character and that series is one of my favorites of all time, when Kate and Maggie couldn’t get married it was truly heartbreaking. I totally stand with Hayden Blackmon and JH Williams III.
There were great highs of the new 52 and great lows. You angred writers and artists, you made Batman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and Shazam great, but failed Superman, Wonder Woman, various others as well. There were great stories in the new 52, but so much junk, that it overshadows the success
Yeah, it was definitely an interesting time as a reader. Knowing so much of the behind the scenes makes me look back on the New 52 slightly differently, but it also makes me realize that there's some good stuff that I overlooked at the time.
For all its faults, New 52 Justice League is what got me into comics, JL Origin was the first comic I ever read. What are your guys thoughts on Geoff Johns run on JL?
I think there are a lot of modern fans of DC who got their start with or around the New 52. Even though I started reading DC a few years earlier, I didn't really jump into the world outside of Batman until the New 52. I loved Geoff Johns JL from what I can recall. I really liked how it was THE book to read leading into events. It made it feel important and epic. I'm very excited to read Darkseid War for our Book Club and I'm planning on rereading as much JL as I can beforehand.
wanted to bring up that if it weren't for the New 52 there wouldn't have been MARVEL NOW, which although definitely not as significant, I would argue had an even higher quality of books.
Please can you debate pricing. Some companies still do 2.99. I remember back in those days I bought 20 books a month. Now as most are over 3.99 I get less than ten monthly books. Surely they would sell more, if they priced them less. Image have many 2.99 books.
We’ve talked about the price of comics a lot on the channel, and I’m sure the conversation will come around again soon. I’m not sure if it fits into our New 52 Deep Dive but if it does, we’ll get to it!
NEW 52 May be looked at different depending on the demographics. 40-60 year olds DC fans in 2012 May HATE IT. However, 13-18 year olds in 2012 may see it as perfect jumping on point. Please review/retell NEW 52 Harley Quinn and Suicide Squad! You guys should have another TH-cam channel of just retelling comic book stories à la Comicstorian (R.I.P.)/Comics Explained.
That’s a great point and something we discussed a bit in the first episode of this series. I plan to read and discuss Suicide Squad a bit next week. I love both channels but that’s not really our thing! We’re more interested in discussing comics and talking about their historical context and such, not necessarily retellings.
@@TheComicsPals yayyyyy!!! #New52SuicideSquad !!! Thank youuu!! Another side point, Zach Snyder may have based his justice league “trilogy” on the gritty aesthetic of the NEW52. If he’s to base the DC universe on anything, it would have probably been DC’s “stuff” in 2011-2013: NEW 52. That’s obviously what MCU did for their MARVEL universe: Marvel comics, 2000-2008. Oh, that’s alright too. Your channel is perfect as is 😀
Financially (and culturally), the new 52 was DC's most successful "initiative" since infinite crisis/52. I maybe biased because It was what got me into comics. I would recommend the following titles: Aquaman batman batman and robin wonder woman swamp thing JL JL dark Harley Quinn the conclusion of Geoff John's green lantern epic the conclusion of Tomassi's GL corps run Green Arrow by Lemire
All those were great! This series isn’t meant to hate on the New 52, it’s meant to be a look back at it beyond just the books we liked or didn’t and dive deeply into the inner workings of DC at the time.
@@TheComicsPals Thanks. If it came as if I was hating on this series, I was not. in fact I really enjoy this type of meta analysis (like your DC boom/bust from during Jenette Kahn's early tenure). All the best.
Thank you! No I definitely understand where you’re coming from. I just wanted to say that like you I enjoyed a lot of the New 52 and I hope that people don’t think otherwise.
Was the book club winner (or poll options?) announced? Not sure if I missed it or if it’s just toward the end of the stream, which I haven’t gotten to yet.
Hey, I appreciate you asking. I got so wrapped up in the Deep Dive I neglected to talk about the Book Club! The poll has closed and the winner is Darkseid War. We'll be putting out an official announcement soon, but that's definitely the book!
I think if we’re talking modern we’ve gotten some great Superman stories in the last few years. PKJ’s time on the book was great, Joshua Williamson has been telling some really fun stories with him as well. Sales for the character have been good too.
You guys did a great job with this part. Breaking down the hot mess that was editorial. I'm curious though, are you aware of instenses where editorial saved a series? I know they almost control everything and get the finale say, but is there a scenario where they intervened with a writers story and it was for the better?
Right?! He told this story during one of his classes on Substack, and hearing it live was so visceral. Not that he seemed angry anymore, just that he was able to get across the emotions he had at that time in a way that made it clear how frustrated he must've been. I can't imagine that type of situation.
Certainly! PKJ’s run on Action Comics was truly excellent. It’s the run that turned me into a Superman fan. From that, Warworld is the standout story. On the Marvel side, his current Hulk run is excellent. It’s where he introduces the Ghost Rider of 44, who will appear in the upcoming Hellhunters series.
Saw you guys on the near mint channel and thought you guys were worth the watch. I'm definitely gonna stick around you guys rock
Thank you so much for giving us a chance! I hope you continue to enjoy what we do
Thanks so much!!
NEW 52 GOT ME TO COME BACK. Last time I was into comics I was 8 years old. New 52 got me to come back at 26. Im now 38 and still reading and buying.

Agents of SHADE
Yeah I certainly had a lot of favorites from this era and I’m enjoying (some) of my reads for this series.

Aquaman is easily my favourite new 52 series. By Johns, Pelletier and Reis.
Aquaman was phenomenal. My first exposure to the character and it’s arguably the best one
John Jackson Miller the writer of SW old republic and many other SW comics is the manager and creator of Comichron.

I want someone to write a comprehensive non-fiction book about this
Maybe one day!

Most of the New 52 was bad/mid. Outside of Batman, Swamp Thing, and maybe Aquaman and Batgirl.
I liked a few more series than just those, but there were absolutely a lot of clunkers in there.
