Authentic dollar bills are equipped with many security features to make them difficult to forge. But that doesn’t stop counterfeiters from trying to fool people with fakes. Luckily, anyone can help catch a counterfeit; all you need are a few simple tools and a bit of chemistry. Tien Nguyen details the chemistry behind counterfeit cash.

I'm a bank teller, and the easiest way to detect counterfeit is to run your fingernail over the shirts of the portrait on the front of the bill. The shirts have a raised edging on them, and you'll be able to feel/lightly hear the raised edges. It's like this for every bill, including $1 and $2 bills.

There are easier ways to spot a counterfeit bill:
Legitimate bills use black and green ink.
Most counterfeits are printed out with a printer so by that logic all green ink will be comprised of yellow, magenta, and cyan and is easily discernible if you look closely at the bill.
Also, in bills that are 10 dollars and higher, the amount in the lower right hand corner of the face side of the bill will be reflective/shiny. If the number does not shine it is suspect.

Remember to be careful for bleached bills too! You might notice that bills pass the marker test but are still counterfeit, they take a $1 or $5 bill, bleach it, then print a higher denomination on top of that. Make sure that strip is in the right spot before taking large bills. That marker is easily fooled!

There's an easier way to combat the bleached 1/5 trick. The ones and fives don't have a portrait with enough of a suit to texture. All bills 10 and higher in the U.S. have textured suits on the portrait. If it doesn't feel textured, it's fake.

The following is for entertainment and educational/informational purposes only and is not intended to suggest that anyone produce, distribute, or otherwise commit a crime involving fake money. I do not endorse or imply that anyone commit a crime. If you do decide to make fake money the chances are very high you will be arrested, Counterfeiting is a Crime punishable with a Large custodial sentence. I take no responsibility for your use of the information, opinions and possible lies stated below. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Point one: Detector pens DO NOT WORK, lots of paper now is made without starch and even when the pens were first introduced their effectiveness was really only psychological, they are only to deter casual counterfeiters as most paper has very little starch in it.
Point Two: The strips in notes can be made from any material that will Flores, remember it only has to work once when you, or better, your accomplice spends the note.
Point Three: Making the paper used in U.S. bank notes is quite easy, there are many tutorials on-line on making your own paper. The original reason bank notes didn't have starch in them is because, rather than wood pulp which is expensive and starchy, they use a fabric/cotton mix which was incredibly cheep to make and produced very poor quality paper.
Point Four: When deciding on note denomination, Lower is better. While it may seem tempting to create 100$ bills, if you think about it, how often to you pay for a pizza, or buy a CD with a 100$ bill. Fives, Tens, and Twenties are your best bet, they are more common and your note will blend in better with other notes.
Point Five: Location is everything, When spending your fake money target shops that pressure there sales staff to maximise the number of customers they serve, shops that are popular or stores that have high customer through-put. Sales staff are less likely to take the time to thoroughly check notes if the boss has a stopwatch and an eye on the cue behind you.
Point Six: Using any of the above information to commit a crime is stupid, only an idiot brakes the law when the consequences are so horrible for such a small return. Use this information to spot the idiotic criminals and report all crimes to the local authorities.

If you're being given a bill, and find it to be fake, then you obviously shouldn't take it.
If you have a bunch of bills, then don't ever test them yourself. You almost certainly will not be arrested for passing off a bill you didn't know was a forgery. Ignorance is your friend in this situation.
If someone tests a bill you have and finds it to be a forgery, then you can either destroy the bill, or try giving it to the FBI. Either way, though, you're out however much money the bill is worth.

Pawel Tylinski You're actually suppose to turn it in to the secret service, not the fbi. You can find out any details that you need by simply calling your local police department. It is illegal to have a counterfeit in your possession, especially knowingly. If you receive fake money as change, you're probably out of luck. If you try to spend this money at a store, you're risking jail time.
If you find fake money, turn it in.
I would recommend not destroying it, because it may help the secret service in an investigation.
I'm a clerk, and I handle thousands of dollars everyday. I can spot a fake bill pretty easy. I always confiscate the bill from the customer when they present it to me. I've seen $100 fake bills that marked good with the pen, and I've also seen them with the blue stripe. The first two red flags that you will notice in a fake bill is that the print kind of looks blurry and that the bill feels a little more stiff. If you have any bill with these issues, check the watermark or use the pen. The differences may be too subtle to see for someone who doesn't handle money very often, but if someone demonstrates to you that your bill is fake, you better get rid of it the right way.
On a side note, I've never encountered a fake $1 bill in my profession. Maybe I did, but I just didn't notice it. Maybe it's not worth counterfeiting. I don't know the reason, but I've never seen one before, and I do have a safe that automatically rejects fake or damaged bills.

+CoolAsFinnBro By plastic you mean polymer specifically. Vietnam also uses polymer money (because someones brothers wife's dads cousin (you get the idea) gave some kick backs. If you think they can't be counterfeited then you would be wrong. There are many fakes that come out of China and get circulated all the time. if it can be made, if can be counterfeited! The polymer monies is many cases are easier...it just depends on what security features are present, not so much the material the majority of the bill is made of.

In Australia it's extremely easy to spot a counterfeit. Since counterfeits are mort often than not made of paper, it's easy to just feel the difference between a genuine and a counterfeit. Along with that, there are parts where it is see-through, and the last time I checked the only way to make paper clear is by cutting a hole in it. Not to mention that the government is making new designs so it is even easier to tell the difference between a counterfeit and a genuine, as they're putting brail on it and moving images when you tilt them, as well as extremely tiny writing that you need a magnifying glass to read.

We have a FraudFighter (the UV-16 model) where I work. The strip on the 100s can be really hard to see in a store. Other bills are SUPER bright under the black light, but that 100 is a fairly weak red.
But it impresses our customers! The colored hash marks on the front of the device are handy to make sure the strip is in the right place, and the right denomination for the bill.

Money (or at least government-based money) has value because we belive it has value. For example, bitcoin used to have no value. But because enough people accept bitcoin as money, bitcoin became valuable. So if enough people accept monopoly money as money, then monopoly money becomes valuable.

Paul Revere never said, "The British are coming!"
Not with possible British troops and Loyalists around. Yet some might be British themselves (considering how not everybody was born in the Colonies). There's also the chance of somebody ratting him out (or warning the Redcoats that the Colonists are preparing themselves) if Revere were to shout, "The British are coming!"
He actually said, "The _REGULARS_ are _out_!!" Take it as a code Patriots understand. Or a way to get the message out without being so obvious.
