'No one stops listening to a symphony because they know its going to end' what a line Edit: lol some of the comments, if it's any clarity; I'm an atheist and that line still has a poetic truth to it.
That's pretty immature statement. This is how someone who doesn't firmly believe in The God tries to console himself VS people who pretty understood the Real Meaning of the Life. Thank you Jordan, I'm not buying it.
Life doesn’t have meaning unless you make it have. Your “real” meaning for life is your opinion and has no basis for anyone else. Life is full of struggling and that’s the point Dr. Peterson makes - just because there are struggles in life does not mean life is insignificant and should perish. Likewise, we don’t stand up and walk away from listening to a beautiful piece of music just because we know it will end. That’s not how we should live life.
Might seem weird, but, to hear someone as knowledgeable and intelligent as JP say "I don't know", "I'm not qualified to answer that". Makes me want to listen to him more.
That’s not weird at all. None of us know everything, and when people don’t know but make up something because they can’t admit they don’t, that is dishonest & prideful. A person who is generally honest can admit when they don’t know.
That's maturity and wisdom. Most people are unwilling to admit two things: when they are wrong, and when they don't know something. The average person feels personally affronted when they have to admit either of these things.

@@sebastiangast1640 I believe he means metaphorically that you don't devalue and discard everything, hence stop moving towards your end goal, just because you know you'll reach it or because it's going to end either one way or another (can be generalised to life even). Not literally that you don't stop and listen to good music at one point in time (e.g. passing by some good street musicians)
@@psychcowboy1 He means that life, like music, does not have to be eternal to be meaningful. He even follows it by saying, "I think in some sense our proper task is to find the meaning within the finite."
Thanks JP, once I got clean his work helped to reorder my priorities in life. 5 years later I went from being a literal bum living in my car to earning a bachelors degree with a high GPA and being a completely independent and functioning adult. It’s still not perfect but I am eons ahead of where I started from…
You can’t just “find” meaning of life, you create your own meaning of life. Whoever is reading this, I hope you have a wonderful life, and truly be happy💕
Ultimately life has no inherent meaning, we live, we die, that's it. But you can make an impact and give more to the world than you take. Be kind to the people around you, care about others, find what makes you happy and motivates you. It's entirely up to the person to find what the meaning of life is and it's different for everyone. In the end we live, we suffer, we rejoice, we feel sorrow and sadness but that's life and I'd prefer to be here experiencing it than not at all. The closest thing to a miracle is that we're all here and alive in this time. What are the chances that you would be born our of billions of sperm cells? The fact that we were born and we're conscious is meaning enough to at least try to live life imo.
@@themanape Oh yes, that’s why we need to see reality as what it is, not as what we wish it to be. I can always create some ways to how to live my life, but I also accept that I can’t control the outcome at all.
@Free Doms what he meant was if your dream doesn't fall in the limelight of reality, then you've quite literally deluded yourself, but don't think for a second that limits you, reality in these days(at least for now), there are so many things you can be and do.
A meaningful life as far as I can tell is to find a mode of being that is so meaningful that, the fact that life is suffering is no longer relevant. ‐Dr.Jordan Peterson
I found solitude in knowing that I am going to die one day and that it's going to be all over, there hasn't been a single day I was glad beeing alive and there likely will not be one but it's funny to me how it works the other way around for me. I can move on and get on with my life exactly because it has an end. People are different all you can do is hope that most will eventually find what they need.
I believe to live a meaningful life is to know for sure that this life is just a test that’s passing. Being yourself while spreading goodness and kindness is what all life is about. When you strive to improve yourself while trying to help others too, that’s what meaning is.
It is an excellent answer because it is honest and inclusive. We don't know what is beyond death. People have argued that almost as long as there have been people. Yet there are few who have never lost someone they loved.
Highly recommend Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Searching for Meaning”. Changed my life when I read it and will continue to read this small book every year for the rest of my life.
There's a book called Hidden Time Wealth, and it talks about how using some secret techniques, you can overcome procrastination and accomplish anything in life. It's not just a bunch of empty promises; it's the real deal.
To accomplish something you need to first WANT to accomplish. That is you need to find meaning in accomplishing it. And that’s where the most difficult part is.
I try to not fall in the trap of idolizing, and I do my best in keeping it that way. As all people are flawed, I believe our mission in life is to always strive for the better and be, throughout the course of life, less and less flawed. Or as “not bad” as possible, given the burdens of life which reach us all and beat us to the ground. So Dr. Peterson, I do not idolize you. But damnit.. you’re truly a blessing to this world, a man who helps millions of people by telling the raw, harsh truth while giving tools and solutions on ways to bear it. I hope your wisdom continues to reach people around the world, stay healthy and don’t let the foolish bring you down.
So you're saying that anyone who disagrees with him is foolish. There are plenty of truly great philosophical thinkers who think Peterson's views are foolish. Just trying to give some balance. I hope I'm not being foolish.
@@Doctor.T.46 No, certainly not. Given the complexity of life and endless of different perceptions on all matters depending on ones upbringing and surroundings (and genes/nature at play with our surroundings), there are plenty of views differing from Dr. Peterson’s. However there’s a great amount of, I’d say, indisputable truth in his teachings. And by “the foolish” I was referring to those who spout thoughtless and untrue statements about him without actually, genuinely, in an intelligent way criticizing his ideas and teachings. There are things he’s spoken about that I disagree with but I recognize that those things might apply to the vast majority of situations, which makes them generally true. He was/is of course wrong about some things because no human being is always right. I’m still young so I have a very long way to go. We all start off as foolish and stay that way to some degree for the better part of life, me, you, everyone, you’re not alone my friend! Cheers
@@Doctor.T.46 I think it’s a matter of why someone disagrees that makes them foolish. If it is because they are clinging to old beliefs and Peterson breaks their world view, then yes, foolish. At one of his biblical lectures Jordan starts of by reading a letter that was sent to him by someone who claims she saw him in an ayawaska vision... Dr Peterson, I have pondered all my substantially long life for the answers you have provided about how to live to my life, Some of the answers I had found on my own and they were reinforced by your teaching and I have gained insight from listening to your lectures. But now I'm pretty old. I'll be 69 soon. Every day is more important and I find myself panicking at the thought of not being able to be productive. I was thinking about posting a comment to one of your videos and I found this one, how appropriate. I wish you would talk more to people who are ready to accept you advice and find a way to put it into action. Thanks
"In music, you find this demand that the music lays upon you to orient yourself in relationship to this harmonious interplay of patterns." As a musician/music lover, this absolutely describes what it's like to really "get into" a piece of music you're playing or listening to, kind of our "flow state" or being "in the zone" as it were. It's an otherworldly feeling, almost out-of-body but not really, kind of like your mind and the music lock in as one and your body is just sort of along for the ride and does what it feels led to do. I think you've gotten a taste of this feeling before, Dr. Peterson, perhaps from that time (and maybe others) when you felt so incredibly and inexplicably overwhelmed with emotion by a symphony you were listening to. Imagine being in and out of that state for an hour or more if you're a performing musician who *really* gets into the music and performance.

"Meaning is implication for action, or for re-organization of the perceptional frames that frame action." All right: I'm going to spend the next 5 years meditating on *that* phrase.
All he's really saying in overly complicated way is that meaning is the reason why we do things based on the way we perceive and think about reality. But the problem with that definition is that it doesn't give the individual true objective meaning in their life. The kind of meaning described by Peterson is only limited to the subjectivity of how each individual thinks and perceives, which is not true meaning at all.

Being in the exact circumstances that I am in right now, this lecture really helped realise when all of my optimism has disappeared; it was the exact timeframe that I've stopped living in the moment (Having done that for around 2 or 3 years until that moment) and started thinking in the future / within timeframes. Really helped me get a glimpse of what the issue was.
This is a great man and the reason youtube plays a good part in people's lives. I find that knowing these things a revelation. Putting it into practice is the difficult part.
I like that Dr. Peterson is humble enough to admit when he doesn't know about a subject and has admitted that there are people far smarter than him out there, that's the mark of a true scientist.
I don't think anything has changed in his lectures. I still get that wonderful feeling that i used to get watching those university lectures... Thanks for everything
Even though most of this goes above and over my head, I appreciate how well he knows his audience. He is at Cambridge so he speaks and uses verbiage that they can understand. When he’s on Joe Rogan he speaks as if it’s to the common man. It’s a skill set that’s easy to learn but hard to master

"We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn't, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares. "But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell's dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley's vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think. "What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us. "This book is about the possibility that Huxley, not Orwell, was right." From "Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business" by Neil Postman. I despair for those who refuse to seek enlightenment and experience. We exist, let's make the most of it and be the best version of ourselves we can become.

Yes, you can create your own meaning. But if your meaning doesn't fall in line with the truth, your would have deluded yourself.
@@themanape Oh yes, that’s why we need to see reality as what it is, not as what we wish it to be. I can always create some ways to how to live my life, but I also accept that I can’t control the outcome at all.
Thanks, I wish the same for you ❤️
@Free Doms what he meant was if your dream doesn't fall in the limelight of reality, then you've quite literally deluded yourself, but don't think for a second that limits you, reality in these days(at least for now), there are so many things you can be and do.
A meaningful life as far as I can tell is to find a mode of being that is so meaningful that, the fact that life is suffering is no longer relevant.

V. Frankl said The meaning of life is helping others find meaning in theirs.”Simple.
Another one from Dr. JP " the meaning of life is to live a meaningful life."
I believe to live a meaningful life is to know for sure that this life is just a test that’s passing. Being yourself while spreading goodness and kindness is what all life is about. When you strive to improve yourself while trying to help others too, that’s what meaning is.

@@Doctor.T.46 No, certainly not. And by “the foolish” I was referring to those who spout thoughtless and untrue statements about him without actually, genuinely, in an intelligent way criticizing his ideas and teachings. @@Doctor.T.46 I think it’s a matter of why someone disagrees that makes them foolish. If it is because they are clinging to old beliefs and Peterson breaks their world view, then yes, foolish. "In music, you find this demand that the music lays upon you to orient yourself in relationship to this harmonious interplay of patterns."
As a musician/music lover, this absolutely describes what it's like to really "get into" a piece of music you're playing or listening to, kind of our "flow state" or being "in the zone" as it were. All he's really saying in overly complicated way is that meaning is the reason why we do things based on the way we perceive and think about reality.

I only wanted to help add more light to that journey! make the fight a bit easier for him if at all possible, as i'd like to do for you, and everyone, if it were in my power at all. thanks for giving me the chance to clarify!!! i hope you're doing well!!!
@@optinoptimist Thank you for your clarification, very much appreciated 👍 🙏
@UCbS-sKEmeTh7iTdqekTS3pQ I certainly don't feel superior, I just have a different opinion to that of Jordan Peterson. I'm not even sure I'm right. As for spending a lot of time here, it's because I enjoy hearing different opinions. I have an open mind and being here is part of my education.
@UCbS-sKEmeTh7iTdqekTS3pQ most of you are not foolish, but I do worry that many followers don't take the time to question Peterson's views or do their own research. That worries me.
Hidden Time Wealth is so unique. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about it sooner. It’s amazing how life-changing this can be for anyone battling procrastination.
I revel in the fact life has no meaning. It is my meaning because I'm free to do what I want with no guilt or fear.
Jordan B Peterson and Jonathan Pageau are the most important voices of our current time.

What a badass Jordan Peterson is. I have so much respect for him.

He does that for me a lot too!
What? What did you need and what did you get?

To meet JP in person and spend just a few minutes with him would be a blessing. I wonder how difficult it is to access JP. He is a gift to humanity.

JBP is the only person I can think of who could possibly describe a mosh pit as a waltz for nihilists. Now I can't stop thinking about it.
What is a mosh pit? Google translate thinks it is arabic.
@@ankavoskuilen1725 Google it in English, then translate the description.
You are a beautiful man Dr Jordan Peterson. A true gift to the world. Thankyou for choosing to impart your wisdom and admitting you don’t know everything…but then go on to give such meaningful answers of hope in this time. Love listening to your meaty words 🇦🇺💫💚

Excellent talk, meaning is God...God IS CONSCIOUSNESS!!!🦉🦉🦉
God is love
no
Musicdudeyoutub yes
There are a number of philosophical concepts that seek to describe consciousness..the existence of a God is only one of many.
@@Doctor.T.46 You misunderstand, the "existence" of God is a total misnomer unless you do not believe in existence. Existence IS God. Consciousness IS God
Many many hours of listening to Mr Peterson. Not a minute wasted
Thanks for charging Jordan, god bless!

About the symphony example; it is also interesting how it makes symphony so much better precisely because it has an end.
All things have an end, and they become a fuel for the new beginning and a possibility of a change.
Also, sometimes the end of a symphony (or any song) can be the best part, especially if there's like a big *DUUUNNNNNN!!!!!* at the end 😍😍😍

The example of “why stop a baby crying” is so perfect because while it garners a laugh, taking care of an innocent human being who needs you is also perhaps the most important thing in the world.
JP's brilliance can only do so much for someone in my situation. I am unemployed, divorced, unemployed(but I do have a rather significant savings). I am on Fluoxetine and am devoutly religious though. And I am a recovering opioid addict who at age 42 lives with his parents still! But I am rather acutely aware of how thinking positively can actually change the situation one finds oneself in! My diagnosis is/are depression, opiate addiction in sustained remission, PTSD AND anxiety, which I control through exercise! And I have have been undergoing a rather rapid detox from Suboxone. I do NOT reccomend it! And if you have a good job, do Not quit unless you have something lined up already.
"Meaning is implication for action or for reorganization of the perceptual frames that frame action"
So meaning is the reason why we do things
Mr. Peterson you've had my attention for many years now...but you've just taken it a step up. You went to a Ramones concert? Kudos to you my man.
If you struggle to find meaning in your life turn to Jesus. He is the only way through the gate. Its as simple as this people.
Discovering Hidden Time Wealth has been one of the best things I've done for my productivity. It feels like I’ve finally cracked the code to overcoming procrastination.
And that Mr. Peterson is where you have it wrong…… you want us to look for meaning in time and in ourselves! True meaning is found outside of time in eternity with our eternal Saviour Jesus. The true meaning of life is to love Jesus with all your heart soul mind and strength and love everyone else and then you will find the true meaning of life! Try it I dare you!
Believe in Jesus and be saved it’s really that simple.
Actually, I repent first as much as I can, and then have faith in the Good Lord Jesus.
I am awestruck by Quidditch analogy... You chase the thing that glimers in the distance, and you usually win the game, but not always... What an insightful analogy to life, what a great invention of Rowlings imagination...
This lecture within itself offers a great meaning to my life as I did not pay attention to the time whilst listening to it. I appreciate thorough navigation of the human unconsciousness, as well as Jordan B Peterson.
Omg I love JP. He’s so brilliant at saying things that help people
