Next is the replace the feet or quick feet pick off move. Just remember to vary your looks and holds. I remember in high school a lot of the pitchers still thought you had to disengage by stepping off before throwing to first. So all of their pickoff moves were slow and obvious. I always did the spin move and had great success with it. Had a few opposing coaches ask the umps if I balked and if you don't know that that isn't a balk you shouldn't be coaching high school baseball.

    Great video, an old coach taught me exactly what you just did. It's an awesome pick off move especially when you take your time on the first one, then lightning fast the real move.

    Great Video! Adding the Balk rules to your video would help the beginning pitchers understand the rules and what they can and can't do. For instance, you can't start your motion to deliver the pitch (pick up your left leg) and then step off, or try to step off or spin... That is a Balk. If you do the jump move, you MUST throw to first. If you do not throw the ball using the jump spin (fake the throw), that is also a Balk. You do not have to come set to step off or do the spin move, you just can't pick up your left foot. Charlie Hough had a great move (more advanced) where he moved his pivot (right) foot toward third slightly then stepped and threw to first. When done properly, it is almost impossible for the runner to pick up or the umpire to call a Balk. However, the Charlie Hough move is the same as a jump/spin move (but much quicker), you must throw the ball. If no throw is made, it is a Balk. Pitching is the art of deception.

      It worked because it's a balk. You have to come set before you can throw the ball.

      Bill, you are totally wrong. You need to come set before delivering a pitch. You do not have to come set when picking to a base.

    I coach 12u baseball and I ran into this rule this past season. Please explain this to me. I have played baseball my whole life and it has always been my understanding that from the windup the pitcher has to go home but from this reading in the MLB rulebook. Please shed some light on this for me.
    The rule states straight out of the MLB rulebook, which I will copy to this post, that a pitcher out of the windup and do 3 things
    MLB 5.07 Pitching
    From the Windup Position, the pitcher may:
    (A) deliver the ball to the batter, or
    (B) step and throw to a base in an attempt to pick-off a runner, or
    (C) disengage the rubber (if he does he must drop his hand to his sides).
    In disengaging the rubber the pitcher must step off with his pivot foot and not his free foot first. He may not go into a set or stretch position-if he does it is a balk.
    From what I read the pitcher can go to first base out of the windup as long as he steps in that direction. From what I see to be the problem is most pitchers step sideways in the direction of first to start their motion going home which would not leave them the ability to have a pick off to first since the 2 motions must be different. BUT if a pitcher was to step straight off the back of the rubber to start their motion home then they would have the ability to be able to step straight to first for a pick off. What are you thought please?

    • @alanhess9306
      @alanhess9306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The HS rule does not allow a pick off from the windup while MLB rules do.

    I coached first base at my son's tournament this weekend, and twice was told it's not a balk to spin move to first and not throw to first. Am I mistaken? The second time this happened, I politely questioned the umpire about this, and he told me that once the pitcher disengages from the rubber, he is an infielder and can do what he wants. I explained that I know this to be correct, but to disengage from the rubber the pitcher has to step back behind the rubber. A spin move is not considered disengaging. He told me I was wrong and needed to check my info. I believe I'm correct. Can anyone straighten me out on this?
