2:19 levy says "or fischer random chess" 2:21 levy says "is a type of chess where the back row of pieces is randomly selected before the game" 2:26 levy says "and shuffled, the bishops have to be on the opposite color" 2:28 levy says "and the king has to be between uh" 2:30 levy says "the rooks" 2:32 levy says "and that is for castling rights" 2:35 levy says "a position was drawn" 2:36 levy says "the players have to analyze, they play this type of chess so that openings dont matter" 2:39 levy says "this is Magnus Carlsen's dream come true" 2:41 levy says "and i think this game was played in an underground gold vault" 2:45 levy says "i mean like basically sounds like some harry potter thing" 2:48 levy says "uh" 2:49 levy says "anyway" 2:51 levy says "this is the position, yesterday Magnus defeated Fabiano in spectacular fashion" 2:55 levy says "Fabiano Caruana was on the hunt today" 2:58 levy says "and trying to give it right back to Magnus" 3:00 levy says "he opened the game with c4, the English opening" 3:03 levy says "if you can call it that" 3:05 levy says "y'know, i'm not sure i can call it that" 3:06 levy says "and in this type of format, the center is important" 3:09 levy says "but it's very important also to open up your pieces" 3:12 levy says "and think about what's going to be the structure in the future" 3:15 levy says "who's going to put what pawn where" 3:17 levy says "there are a million and one possibilities" 3:18 levy says "this position can be plyed out some ten different ways at this point" 3:22 levy says "and y'know" 3:23 levy says "here we go developing it uh like this" 3:25 levy says "so" 3:26 levy says "d4 d5" 3:27 levy says "ants" 3:28 levy says "like a slav defense" 3:30 levy says "i mean these are the early moves of a slav" 3:33 levy says "i guess" 3:35 levy says "but it's an italian-american and a norwegian on a boat in singapore" 3:38 levy says "or rather in a gold vault in singapore" 3:39 levy says "now" 3:40 levy says "on the third move of the game" 3:42 levy says "Fabi already plays something that the computer really doesn't like" 3:47 levy says "uh for whatever reason" 3:48 levy says "it immediately starts saying that this knight can come to the party" 3:52 levy says "this knight can go to e6" 3:54 levy says "and then right away it's trying to say that black is already very comfortable uh" 3:58 levy says "but that's, i don't know" 3:59 levy says "a-and yea, in-in normal chess" 4:01 levy says "locking structure like this early for white" 4:04 levy says "is not always the best decision" 4:06 levy says "uh" 4:06 levy says "but okay, Magnus plays h5, alright" 4:10 levy says "and you'll notice that" 4:12 levy says "their time hasn't started moving yet" 4:13 levy says "i don't really know why that is" 4:15 levy says "uh" 4:16 levy says "maybe the clocks were having a syncing problem" 4:18 levy says "uh" 4:19 levy says "h4 is played" 4:20 levy says "i guess they're just gaining bonus time, they're both playing relatively quickly" 4:24 levy says "Fabi plays h4 relatively quickly" 4:26 levy says "um" 4:27 levy says "this move is obviously played to bring the queen to the action, not" 4:29 levy says "right away cuz that would be really tragic but" 4:32 levy says "you need to play where your bishops point" 4:35 levy says "and generally this is a good strategy, uh" 4:37 levy says "if you allow Magnus to play h4 it could be quite problematic" 4:41 levy says "so he plays h4 himself" 4:44 levy says "and now we have knight f6" 4:45 levy says "first time Magnus spends a little bit of time, he moves his knight to f6" 4:49 levy says "by the way, in this setup, just fun fact, you can actually castle on the first move" 4:55 levy says "you can play O-O on move 1; commit your king right away, uh" 4:59 levy says "obviously the players don't really wanna do that, because then they give their opponent a potential attacking target" 5:04 levy says "and their king is locked there" 5:06 levy says "for the rest of the game" 5:07 levy says "to castle that way you would need to make sure these two squares are free" 5:09 levy says "so the rook a-and, the knight and the bishop would need to move" 5:12 levy says "so" 5:13 levy says "g3, structural decision chosen by Fabi" 5:16 levy says "you can almost guarantee he's not going to castle this way, seeing as he's already moved two pawns" 5:21 levy says "Magnus plays g6 and it's clear that both guys are kind of copying each other" 5:25 levy says "but now we have knight b3" 5:26 levy says "and knight b3 is going to be the first major point of imbalance" 5:29 levy says "because black cannot play knight to b6" 5:31 levy says "but maybe he will play b6, okay"
5:34 levy says "lotta decisions have to be made here" 5:35 levy says "one thing i am a little bit confused by is why Magnus did not immediately play this move e5" 5:40 levy says "also he played knight g4" 5:43 levy says "but then he did not play e5" 5:46 levy says "later" 5:48 levy says "so" 5:49 levy says "put the knight on g4" 5:51 levy says "and then it just stayed there" 5:52 levy says "it didn't really, nothing happened after that" 5:55 levy says "uh" 5:56 levy says "and that's a bit strange" 5:57 levy says "alright" 5:58 levy says "like that's uh" 6:00 levy says "this to me is a very natural move considering that" 6:03 levy says "you know white's got this structure" 6:05 levy says "and black probably needs to do something with the pawns" 6:07 levy says "but ok" 6:08 levy says "he chooses knight g4 and he's the best player in the world so when he makes a decision i'm obviously going to pay attention" 6:13 levy says "one thing i didn't quite get here also" 6:16 levy says "is that um" 6:17 levy says "it's very possible for white to play f3" 6:19 levy says "obviously Magnus is not concerned about this otherwise he wouldn't have gone there" 6:22 levy says "and after knight h6" 6:23 levy says "i imagine he had a rerouting plan" 6:25 levy says "he was probably going to trade the bishop and put knight on f5" 6:29 levy says "but again the computer thinks this is not a good plan, haha" 6:33 levy says "which is why i love fischer random like" 6:34 levy says "queen h2, bishop f5, uh bishop takes knight takes" 6:38 levy says "and this little subtle reroute and then e4" 6:41 levy says "and white's just better, the knight is in a very bad position" 6:44 levy says "Fabi though knight d3" 6:46 levy says "and again a moment here to play e5" 6:49 levy says "although now after e5 f3" 6:51 levy says "the best move for black is the ridiculous e4" 6:54 levy says "counterattacking in the center of the board" 6:57 levy says "but it kinda makes sense right cause there's bishops here" 6:59 levy says "anyway none of this really matters i mean these are all like crazy openings" 7:02 levy says "so bishop f5 is the move chosen" 7:04 levy says "and Fabi wins the battle of the opening by simply getting the better position" 7:10 levy says "now" 7:11 levy says "you may be looking at this and wondering 'how did the king literally teleport off the map'" 7:14 levy says "i mean i used to play a game called combat arms" 7:16 levy says "on nexon, cause i liked maple story growing up" 7:18 levy says "i wasn't a big runescape guy and i never played call of duty or halo" 7:22 levy says "i was a maple story guy, alright" 7:24 levy says "and yeah, you know, they made a game called uh, called uh combat arms" 7:27 levy says "and you would literally just fly off the map" 7:28 levy says "people would hack the game" 7:30 levy says "and then fly off the map and then" 7:31 levy says "and and shoot from the ceil- from the sky" 7:34 levy says "alright, good luck, so this is kinda like wall hacks here" 7:37 levy says "i love this little animation by the way cause the rook doesn't even move" 7:40 levy says "i just find it very funny" 7:41 levy says "um" 7:42 levy says "that's how you castle, right" 7:44 levy says "i was a maple story guy, alright" 7:46 levy says "he can't do the same thing because number 1 uh" 7:48 levy says "the pawn is just hanging uh so in all you know future lines it's a problem" 7:52 levy says "but really it's a problem if you start with e4 and then you take the pawn so" 7:56 levy says "magnus is-i-i-is not in a very good shape, i think early on and i actually quite like Fabiano's position" 8:01 levy says "knight to e6" 8:02 levy says "the bishop drops back to e2" 8:04 levy says "uh and now Magnus totally changes the characteristics of the position" 8:10 levy says "he takes the bishop" 8:13 levy says "Magnus identified that his worst piece is his light squared bishop" 8:16 levy says "it's because he has a bunch of pawns on light squares so he's gonna get rid of it" 8:20 levy says "put his knight on f5 and this is the position that he is going to work with" 8:23 levy says "Fabi plays a very simple move e3" 8:26 levy says "e3 is a problem" 8:29 levy says "i think- im not sure really what Magnus expected" 8:32 levy says "maybe he mostly expected bishop takes f5 but e3 is a problem cause even though this pawn is hanging cause of this absurd bishop from you know uh q47" 8:38 levy says "which is a bus in New York" 8:40 levy says "uh knight takes g3 just leads to more problems than it solves" 8:44 levy says "and" 8:48 levy says "Magnus thinks here and does not play a good move" 8:50 levy says "ok good is i mean well like." 8:52 levy says "his 'worst move' is the best move you've ever played in your life but" 8:56 levy says "b6, alright" 8:58 levy says "b6 uh is a problem" 9:02 levy says "it looks like it makes sense, it looks like this is the stronghold, and after this" 9:06 levy says "you know black is going to be able to create counterplay and the king is there" 9:10 levy says "unfortunately it is simply too slow" 9:16 levy says "and Fabi here plays a good move, he plays f4" 9:21 levy says "and Magnus is in trouble" 9:22 levy says "already" 9:24 levy says "uh the point is that" 9:29 levy says "its very hard for black to actually do anything" 9:34 levy says "like if you take on c5" 9:37 levy says "i take on c5" 9:39 levy says "if you try to play d4" 9:42 levy says "i mean at the very minimum you have no play" 9:44 levy says "you can try to get in, i take take" 9:45 levy says "i play e5 your bishop has no communication your queen has no communication" 9:49 levy says "and im gonna take this pawn by the way, just as a little side note, my queen from the corner is much better than yours" 9:54 levy says "this is very quickly spiraling" 9:55 levy says "knight h6 is the move chosen by Magnus because he's trying to play knight g4 and maybe f5" 10:00 levy says "you know if Magnus is able to play like f5 and knight g4 maybe he's gonna but this queenside" 10:06 levy says "is not very good" 10:08 levy says "he does play knight g4, Fabi brings the queen out" 10:10 levy says "controlling some important squares" 10:12 levy says "queen f3 and now rook c1" 10:15 levy says "and this is the beginning of a long set of problems for the reigning best player in the world" 10:22 levy says "there is absolutely nothing you can do here" 10:24 levy says "if you try to close the position" 10:26 levy says "white simply" 10:28 levy says "plays knight a5, for example, alright" 10:30 levy says "black plays rook c8" 10:32 levy says "and white now spends the rest of the game trying to break through" 10:35 levy says "not to mention the fact you can probably even sacrifice" 10:38 levy says "you can get three pawns for the knight" 10:40 levy says "and black is overwhelmed" 10:42 levy says "and i've got a pawn army that is just gonna, walk- you know- wa-wa-walk down the center of the board" 10:45 levy says "so this can't possibly work" 10:47 levy says "Magnus plays bc5 okay" 10:50 levy says "Fabiano plays knight c5, he does this so that his rook can approach the c pawn" 10:54 levy says "and now the only thing that Magnus can possibly do here is play e5" 10:57 levy says "which was his plan all along to create counterplay, white's gotta be a little bit careful here" 11:03 levy says "Fabi takes on e5, uh" 11:05 levy says "black cannot take with the knight" 11:06 levy says "taking with the knight is bad, it leads to only more problems" 11:10 levy says "if you go for this trade, white completely dominates you positionally, this is not what you want" 11:14 levy says "instead Magnus takes with the bishop" 11:17 levy says "and now we have rook c1" 11:18 levy says "rook c1 voluntarily - this a great game being played by Fabiano" 11:22 levy says "he has multiple options here but he plays rook c1" 11:24 levy says "gives up the pawn in front of his king" 11:27 levy says "and plays rooks takes c6, a beautiful move"
11:31 levy says "an absolutely beautiful move" 11:33 levy says "the queen's under attack, the bishop needs protection" 11:35 levy says "you can't move the queen though, because your king never castled" 11:40 levy says "and after king e8 bishop b5" 11:43 levy says "you're mated" 11:44 levy says "if you go here this is a double check and a mate" 11:47 levy says "and Magnus is not going to lose the game like that so" 11:50 levy says "he plays knight e5" 11:53 levy says "defensive shapeshifting" 11:55 levy says "leaving the bishop hanging" 11:57 levy says "the queen is counterattacked, you cannot take the queen because you lose your queen" 12:00 levy says "so the only thing we can do here is rook takes f6, knight takes f3, and by a miracle - not a miracle he obviously planned it" 12:05 levy says "the bishop is hanging" 12:07 levy says "and even though this bishop is hanging, this bishop is hanging, this rook is hanging, that rook is hanging" 12:11 levy says "king takes b2 because he could've played bishop b4 check" 12:16 levy says "but then the king would've attacked the rook" 12:18 levy says "so you're still not fast enough" 12:21 levy says "and when the dust settles with king b2 and knight d2" 12:24 levy says "rook c7 it looks like Magnus Carlsen is absolutely on the ropes" 12:29 levy says "looks like he's on the ropes, i mean he's just getting mated right like" 12:33 levy says "if black plays rook g7 here, defending" 12:36 levy says "i mean. white, well white can't play bishop g6 because rook takes g6 but white can play a whole lotta things like for example rook a6" 12:42 levy says "take this pawn, bulldoze, black's king is stuck on the back rank, this knight is basically trapped and gonna get uh, you know, taken by the bishop" 12:48 levy says "so i don't know if Fabi missed this move or it was absolutely his plan to go for this position" 12:55 levy says "but in this position, black can still castle" 12:59 levy says "that is the hero's calling of this entire game" 13:05 levy says "it's the fact that in these little moments, on the 25th move black can still castle that way" 13:10 levy says "now, having said that" 13:12 levy says "maybe instead of entering this long sequence" 13:16 levy says "Fabi here should've simply backed up" 13:19 levy says "should've played defense and maintained a level of pressure in this position" 13:23 levy says "black would've gone rook b8" 13:25 levy says "white maybe would've had to go bishop c1 which is a little depressing" 13:27 levy says "and then after castles" 13:30 levy says "you know maybe rook f1" defending your queen, the bishop has to come here" 13:34 levy says "you kinda go king a1 so you can try to take the bishop, the bishop goes here" 13:38 levy says "maybe you play e4 to open the center, very complicated game, totally not over" 13:41 levy says "but under some pressure" 13:43 levy says "but this sequence was entered" 13:46 levy says "and now Fabi has to win an endgame" 13:48 levy says "the way to win this endgame is to bring the rook to a6, pick up the pawn on a7 and try to win" 13:52 levy says "now i have no clue why he didn't go for this" 13:55 levy says "i have a feeling it's because the counterplay to his own e pawn scared him" 14:00 levy says "but you don't take, what you have to do now is play the absurd king to c1" 14:05 levy says "the knight now has to move, if it goes here it blocks the rook" 14:09 levy says "if it goes to f3, now you take and after rook to e3, you have bishop takes g6 and it cannot be taken because rook g7 is a mate" 14:17 levy says "now" 14:18 levy says"why does this not work" 14:20 levy says "why does this not work right away" 14:24 levy says "why does this not work, because the knight was never forced to move" 14:27 levy says "and now after knight c4 check it's a very different story" 14:30 levy says "rook c3" 14:31 levy says "there's all sorts of ways right" 14:33 levy says "so Fabiano would've had to find rook here, rook here" 14:37 levy says "and then the inbetween move king c1" 14:38 levy says "and that's a very important move, it's a very hard detail to find with 15 minutes on the clock" 14:42 levy says "not the mention the fact um" 14:44 levy says "at this point the players were wearing heart rate monitors ok" 14:48 levy says "and im gonna pull this up for you really quick" 14:50 levy says "so there's this great shot of the players" 14:53 levy says "uh they have cameras on the board so you can see them" 14:55 levy says "and they're wearing heart rate monitors and they're on headphones" 14:58 levy says "they're not listening to you know any moves obviously" 15:00 levy says "uh but uh they have heart rate monitors" 15:03 levy says "this is the most absurd one by far" 15:06 levy says "by far" 15:07 levy says "alright like i uh" 15:10 levy says "Carlsen's heart rate is half of Fabiano's" 15:13 levy says "not exactly but- and this is crunch time of the game" 15:18 levy says "NUTS!" 15:18 levy says "i mean dude's heart rate is like - 72 is like me walking at a slow pace" 15:24 levy says "alright my resting heart's rate like 59, 60" 15:28 levy says "138 is unbelievable, i mean that is my heart rate when i play like, play squash" 15:33 levy says "and you know im not saying he's unheal- im saying i feel like it's pretty normal" 15:37 levy says "it's completely absurd i mean Magnus is absolutely cold blooded and i don't know if he's worked on breathing techniques" 15:41 levy says "meditation, i don't know if he has nutrition coach that has told him this, or if he is just built different" 15:47 levy says "as this kids say but" 15:48 levy says "yea here the game starts heating up" 15:50 levy says "we have f5 played uh" 15:52 levy says "Fabiano you know going straight at Magnus and uh you know Magnus coming back with the knight" 15:56 levy says "forcing a rook endgame" 15:58 levy says "but unfortunately even though it looks like black's king position is totally collapsing" 16:02 levy says "rook d2 check" 16:04 levy says "king c1" 16:06 levy says "and rook d3" 16:07 levy says "and Magnus Carlsen, one of the best endgame players in the world when he's attacking" 16:12 levy says "he's also one of the best endgame players in the world when he's defending" 16:16 levy says "and practically speaking, you know, his-his rooks are going to cause some problems here" 16:19 levy says "pawn takes f7 is played, king g7, how do you break through?" 16:24 levy says "it's crazy because for a brief moment Fabiano is up two pawns and looks like he's about to win a third" 16:29 levy says "but black is just in time with counterplay, it's nuts" 16:33 levy says "it looks like you can play rook f5 rook e3 rook h5" 16:37 levy says "but i win just enough pawns that it simply does not matter" 16:41 levy says "rook f7, rook f7 king f7 and suddenly black is fine" 16:44 levy says "not only is black fine he's almost playing for a win with king g6" 16:47 levy says "like it's nuts"
16:48 levy says "rook f4" 16:50 levy says "rook e3" 16:52 levy says "g4" 16:53 levy says "pawn takes" 16:54 levy says "rook g4" 16:55 levy says "king f6" 16:58 levy says "there's only one pawn advantage for Fabi" 17:00 levy says "how is he going to prove it, it's gonna have to come down to these outside pawns" 17:04 levy says "here he goes with h5" 17:05 levy says "now the only defensive move here is rook f3" 17:10 levy says "the point is that if you take on e4, rook f7 comes in and" 17:14 levy says "there's no way to check the king, rook f3" 17:16 levy says "protects the king" 17:18 levy says "threatens to go here, he could've gone to for example a3" 17:21 levy says "but that allows for example rook g8" 17:24 levy says "rook f7, rook here" 17:25 levy says "so Magnus has to play rook f3 so that his rooks communicate via the pawn on the f-file" 17:32 levy says "rook f3, he gives up the pawn on e4" 17:34 levy says "he takes the pawn on f7" 17:37 levy says "Fabiano goes for a 1-pawn advantage endgame, the boys got 6 minutes on the clock" 17:41 levy says "Magnus' heartrate is that as if he was asleep" 17:44 levy says "rook c3 check, king d2" 17:46 levy says "rook c7" 17:47 levy says "and now Fabi's gonna make progress" 17:49 levy says "rook a6, king d3, a4, king e4, king d5" 17:52 levy says "marching to the center of the board" 17:54 levy says "black cannot go for this pawn, if the king crosses the 6th l- the 6th rank, he goes to b7" 17:59 levy says "oo- sorry, you take on a7" 18:02 levy says "you take on a7 and then" 18:04 levy says "you start pushing, but the way you win here, the real way you win here" 18:07 levy says "is you try to cut the king off as far away as possible" 18:11 levy says "rook e7 is the dagger, rook d7 is also winning but rook e7 and now the king cannot cross" 18:17 levy says "king cannot cross, eh- uh, when the king cannot come help" 18:20 levy says "you're just going to promote the pawn" 18:21 levy says "so" 18:23 levy says "Magnus has to stay on the 7th rank" 18:25 levy says "he is holding the line, tug of war" 18:28 levy says "rook e6" 18:29 levy says "and this is perhaps the most absurd moment of this entire game" 18:34 levy says "rook e6 is really nasty" 18:37 levy says "the point of rook e6 is that if you just play king g7 right" 18:40 levy says "now im gonna start making progress on the a-file" 18:44 levy says "and if you just keep waiting for me im gonna run" 18:48 levy says "if you go a6, pretty easy, i pick up the pawn" 18:50 levy says "right" 18:53 levy says "so the point of this move is to get a move out of black, now the crazy thing is" 18:56 levy says "the winning move for uh - for - the drawing move for black is a5" 19:01 levy says "which is a wild move" 19:03 levy says "throwing the pawn forward" 19:05 levy says "if king c5 going after the pawn just rook f5 and of course i just win h5 pretty self explanatory but what about king c6" 19:11 levy says "now if rook f5 you lose, h6 i get to b6, i get to a6, i win the pawn" 19:16 levy says "so" 19:17 levy says "you have to draw with rook f4" 19:19 levy says "if king b5, rook f5, so this is the way you create the counterplay" 19:23 levy says "and if king c4, rook f4, king b5 rook f5" 19:26 levy says "this is the way you draw" 19:27 levy says "king a6 rook h5 rook b6 you try to go for this" 19:30 levy says "king g7 rook b5 rook h8" 19:32 levy says "king a5 king f6, you can cut the king off but it's not enough" 19:37 levy says "because i can cut your king off too" 19:39 levy says "i can cut your king off and you never get out" 19:42 levy says "very subtle, very subtle details here there is not gonna be on any sort of test" 19:45 levy says "and the funny thing is Magnus Carlsen" 19:47 levy says "misses the defensive technique and now has one minute remaining on the clock" 19:51 levy says "he's on the ropes, a5" 19:53 levy says "rook f5, rook e5, Magnus goes back to f6 disallowing the king from entering" 19:59 levy says "now, the way you win here with white" 20:01 levy says "is very very tricky" 20:04 levy says "it's very subtle" 20:06 levy says "you cannot just go rook e7 and take this pawn" 20:08 levy says "and the crazy thing is" 20:10 levy says "that is exactly what Fabiano does and the game is now a draw" 20:14 levy says "the game is not a draw" 20:18 levy says "it's absurd" 20:20 levy says "and if you know nothing about endgames this will absolutely blow your mind okay" 20:25 levy says "so the real reason this endgame is winning" 20:27 levy says "is because white can run the king this way toward this pawn and start everything with this move rook to g5" 20:37 levy says "the point of rook g5 is that if king h6 is played" 20:40 levy says "you have this trade, this is the most important part" 20:42 levy says "and now this is winning for white" 20:45 levy says "king c6 king f7 king b7 king f6 and if black could go here black would be drawing, black is a square too short" 20:52 levy says "and now white wins" 20:53 levy says "so by putting the rook on g5 you constantly create this threat" 20:56 levy says "now black has a problem right" 20:58 levy says "black has to wait, black plays something like rook f7 of course the king just gets in" 21:02 levy says "so let's say black plays rook a6, you walk over right" 21:06 levy says "let's say black goes back" 21:07 levy says "you can keep walking closer" 21:08 levy says "let's say king c5 uhhhh rook e6" 21:12 levy says "and now you make a run for it down the middle" 21:14 levy says "it's a slow process you have to get all the pieces in the right spots" 21:18 levy says "and then you make a run for it" 21:22 levy says "unfortunately in the game Fabiano goes here" 21:27 levy says "and he is maybe still winning if he departs the position" 21:32 levy says "but he cannot take" 21:35 levy says "which is nuts" 21:37 levy says "because we enter something called the Vancura position" 21:42 levy says "the Vancura position is a sideways lateral defensive technique" 21:46 levy says "rook f5" check, king c4" 21:49 levy says "and now" 21:51 levy says "black just goes here" 21:55 levy says "now you might be looking at this and going 'what about rook takes h5?'" 21:58 levy says "yes i know" 21:59 levy says "ook" 22:00 levy says "something like this" 22:01 levy says "and then the pawn promotes"
22:03 levy says "some of you might be wondering how is this possible like i-isn't it very easy for white to simply play king b4 and keep walking" 22:10 levy says "the problem is you don't have the space to hide the king" 22:15 levy says "anywhere you move the king now, rook f5, king b6, rook here, here" 22:20 levy says "anywhere you move the king you are stuck getting checked" 22:24 levy says "you have absolutely no place to hide with the king" 22:27 levy says "this is the problem, whereas" 22:30 levy says "if black had taken this pawn which is what Fabiano quickly calculated" 22:36 levy says "he has time" 22:38 levy says "why does he have time?" 22:40 levy says "he can hide from the checks 22:43 levy says "he can hide from the checks" 22:44 levy says "look" 22:45 levy says "here, check - here, check" 22:50 levy says "here, check - here, check" 22:54 levy says "oops" 22:58 levy says "that doesn't exist" 23:01 levy says "here" 23:03 levy says "so suddenly" 23:06 levy says "it's a draw, this is the Vancura position" 23:09 levy says "you defend the pawn from the side so the rook cannot move" 23:12 levy says "and this pawn exists so that it cannot be taken" 23:17 levy says "king d4 it looks like it might be winning" 23:19 levy says "Magnus just wont take it" 23:22 levy says "he's just not gonna take it" 23:33 levy says "he's just not gonna take it, he's just not gonna take it" 23:25 levy says "and the thing is you can get the pawn to h6, it doesn't make any difference to me 23:31 levy says "im not- im-" 23:32 levy says "and now it's a draw 23:34 levy says "i sack my rook and it's stalemate" 23:37 levy says "so it's crazy that you would think that being up two pawns in a rook endgame is a win, it's not" 23:42 levy says "it's not" 23:43 levy says "Fabiano cannot leave his pawn" 23:46 levy says "and the second that he tries, Magnus will check him" 23:48 levy says "he will just check him" 23:51 levy says "and there is nothing you can do, you are stuck in a vortex, it looks like you are getting mated" 23:56 levy says "but there is nothing to be done" 23:57 levy says "nothing, rook c6" 23:59 levy says "rook f6, you can never get too close to your pawn" 24:02 levy says "the second you get close to your pawn i check you" 24:03 levy says "you cannot hide your king, now i take the pawn" 24:06 levy says "i don't even have to take the pawn by the way but i take the pawn" 24:09 levy says "you still cannot get away" 24:13 levy says "king g8 rook f6 king g7, this is an unbelievable turn of events" 24:18 levy says "Fabiano ends up sacrificing his rook" 24:21 levy says"and the players play it out to kings, and Magnus Carlsen wins this little freestyle chess challenge in Singapore" 24:27 levy says "Fabiano Caruna" 24:29 levy says "was Magnusing the man himself" 24:31 levy says "he was Magnusing Magnus himself" 24:33 levy says "we have seen Magnus beat people like this all the time" 24:36 levy says "he got him on the ropes, he got him to the critical moment" 24:40 levy says "and now before he went into the position" 24:43 levy says "he needed to be a touch more patient" 24:45 levy says "this position is a win if the king is on b5" 24:48 levy says "so if we get" 24:51 levy says "here" 24:52 levy says "and you play rook e7 king h6" 24:55 levy says "this is still a draw i think" 24:58 levy says "because the king cannot hide" 25:00 levy says "but you're winning here because you just wait" 25:02 levy says "you wait, you get the passage at the right moment, you wait, rook f5" 25:08 levy says "you wait and now you're winning" 25:11 levy says "right because now you made it through, you made it through" 25:14 levy says "Fabiano had to be patient, he had to wait at the tollbooth for 2 seconds" 25:18 levy says "but he was like 'what, im up two pawns" 25:20 levy says "and suddenly Vancura defense" 25:24 levy says "crazy, wild stuff, Magnus wins again, dodges the bullets like, like in the Matrix" 25:29 levy says "and uh gets the job done" 25:31 levy says "folks friendly reminder displate sponsored us today" 25:34 levy says "uh and uh you can check them out for their black friday sale" 25:38 levy says "get up to 44% off, uh i got - i got a few awesome ones here" 25:42 levy says "im gonna hang them up" 25:43 levy says "and um that's all i have for you today, you know by the way" 25:46 levy says "Walmart chessboard is out in 2100 Walmarts, go check that out" 25:51 levy says "chessly 2.0 is on the way" 25:52 levy says "all that good stuff i've been announcing, ill see you in the next video" 25:54 levy says "world chess championship begins in 3 days" 25:57 levy says "get out of here"
15:20 For Fabiano this is the most tense game that might decide his future career as a chess player. For Magnus it is another day in the office, he literally doesn't care
Hey Levy I know you make too many videos on Magnus. Sometimes it's annoying to be honest. But still. Thank you for showing us these magnificent and unbelieveable games. My Goodness! That last part of the video! I was completely shocked in the rook and king endgame. It was fire
I feel like my average play session in chess could easily be one of these videos due to my playstyle of Step 1: Get the queen out of her prison of pawns Step 2: get her into the enemy's pawn/special piece line without getting her killed. Step 3: just kill everything I can get away with. Step 4: checkmate once I have enough piece advantage that they just can't do anything against it. It works for me. even Glados the Chess bot Agrees that I'm stupid if the piece I moved wasn't a queen.
The combat arms references 😭😭, big throwback to my childhood too. F2P multiplayer shooter with an infected mode, but soooo many hackers. Fly hacks, wall hacks, aim-bot, etc.. was a great game besides the cheaters.
U can see the edits while he explains the endgame. Shows how difficult it is that he had to do this multiple times even after looking at the engine beforehand
Magnus is the player with the most talent, you can see that in Blitz, Rapiid and freestyle Chess. In normal high ranking Tournaments he dominates not that much.
Ngl, the game was absolute fire, levy(and stockfish) kinda hated the opening from magnus but the way he escaped that big trouble and entered the rooks endgame was insane
Magnus mentioned:Title Ladies and gentleman: 0:02 Magnus mentioned again: 0:16 Fabiano mentioned: 0:30 Magnus mentioned again: 0:38 An ad started not even 1 minute in the video Levy never fails to mention magnus, Thanks to him he has all his channel growth. It should be named Gotham & Magnus chess
Hikaru was saying on stream today that Gotham might not know the Vancura defense, but Gotham covered it in a rook and pawn endgame video like 3 years ago lol

3:27 levy says "ants"
3:28 levy says "like a slav defense"
3:30 levy says "i mean these are the early moves of a slav"
3:33 levy says "i guess"
3:35 levy says "but it's an italian-american and a norwegian on a boat in singapore"
3:38 levy says "or rather in a gold vault in singapore"
3:39 levy says "now"
3:40 levy says "on the third move of the game"
3:42 levy says "Fabi already plays something that the computer really doesn't like"
3:47 levy says "uh for whatever reason"
3:48 levy says "it immediately starts saying that this knight can come to the party"
3:52 levy says "this knight can go to e6"
3:54 levy says "and then right away it's trying to say that black is already very comfortable uh"
3:58 levy says "but that's, i don't know"
3:59 levy says "a-and yea, in-in normal chess"
4:01 levy says "locking structure like this early for white"
4:04 levy says "is not always the best decision"
4:06 levy says "uh"
4:06 levy says "but okay, Magnus plays h5, alright"
4:10 levy says "and you'll notice that"
4:12 levy says "their time hasn't started moving yet"
4:13 levy says "i don't really know why that is"
4:15 levy says "uh"
4:16 levy says "maybe the clocks were having a syncing problem"
4:18 levy says "uh"
4:19 levy says "h4 is played"
4:20 levy says "i guess they're just gaining bonus time, they're both playing relatively quickly"
4:24 levy says "Fabi plays h4 relatively quickly"
4:26 levy says "um"
4:27 levy says "this move is obviously played to bring the queen to the action, not"
4:29 levy says "right away cuz that would be really tragic but"
4:32 levy says "you need to play where your bishops point"
4:35 levy says "and generally this is a good strategy, uh"
4:37 levy says "if you allow Magnus to play h4 it could be quite problematic"
4:41 levy says "so he plays h4 himself"
4:44 levy says "and now we have knight f6"
4:45 levy says "first time Magnus spends a little bit of time, he moves his knight to f6"
4:49 levy says "by the way, in this setup, just fun fact, you can actually castle on the first move"
4:55 levy says "you can play O-O on move 1; commit your king right away, uh"
4:59 levy says "obviously the players don't really wanna do that, because then they give their opponent a potential attacking target"
5:04 levy says "and their king is locked there"
5:06 levy says "for the rest of the game"
5:07 levy says "to castle that way you would need to make sure these two squares are free"
5:09 levy says "so the rook a-and, the knight and the bishop would need to move"
5:12 levy says "so"
5:13 levy says "g3, structural decision chosen by Fabi"
5:16 levy says "you can almost guarantee he's not going to castle this way, seeing as he's already moved two pawns"
5:21 levy says "Magnus plays g6 and it's clear that both guys are kind of copying each other"
5:25 levy says "but now we have knight b3"
5:26 levy says "and knight b3 is going to be the first major point of imbalance"
5:29 levy says "because black cannot play knight to b6"
5:31 levy says "but maybe he will play b6, okay"
5:34 levy says "lotta decisions have to be made here"
5:35 levy says "one thing i am a little bit confused by is why Magnus did not immediately play this move e5"
5:40 levy says "also he played knight g4"
5:43 levy says "but then he did not play e5"
5:46 levy says "later"
5:48 levy says "so"
5:49 levy says "put the knight on g4"
5:51 levy says "and then it just stayed there"
5:52 levy says "it didn't really, nothing happened after that"
5:55 levy says "uh"
5:56 levy says "and that's a bit strange"
5:57 levy says "alright"
5:58 levy says "like that's uh"
6:00 levy says "this to me is a very natural move considering that"
6:03 levy says "you know white's got this structure"
6:05 levy says "and black probably needs to do something with the pawns"
6:07 levy says "but ok"
6:08 levy says "he chooses knight g4 and he's the best player in the world so when he makes a decision i'm obviously going to pay attention"
6:13 levy says "one thing i didn't quite get here also"
6:16 levy says "is that um"
6:17 levy says "it's very possible for white to play f3"
6:19 levy says "obviously Magnus is not concerned about this otherwise he wouldn't have gone there"
6:22 levy says "and after knight h6"
6:23 levy says "i imagine he had a rerouting plan"
6:25 levy says "he was probably going to trade the bishop and put knight on f5"
6:29 levy says "but again the computer thinks this is not a good plan, haha"
6:33 levy says "which is why i love fischer random like"
6:34 levy says "queen h2, bishop f5, uh bishop takes knight takes"
6:38 levy says "and this little subtle reroute and then e4"
6:41 levy says "and white's just better, the knight is in a very bad position"
6:44 levy says "Fabi though knight d3"
6:46 levy says "and again a moment here to play e5"
6:49 levy says "although now after e5 f3"
6:51 levy says "the best move for black is the ridiculous e4"
6:54 levy says "counterattacking in the center of the board"
6:57 levy says "but it kinda makes sense right cause there's bishops here"
6:59 levy says "anyway none of this really matters i mean these are all like crazy openings"
7:02 levy says "so bishop f5 is the move chosen"
7:04 levy says "and Fabi wins the battle of the opening by simply getting the better position"
7:10 levy says "now"
7:11 levy says "you may be looking at this and wondering 'how did the king literally teleport off the map'"
7:14 levy says "i mean i used to play a game called combat arms"
7:16 levy says "on nexon, cause i liked maple story growing up"
7:18 levy says "i wasn't a big runescape guy and i never played call of duty or halo"
7:22 levy says "i was a maple story guy, alright"
7:24 levy says "and yeah, you know, they made a game called uh, called uh combat arms"
7:27 levy says "and you would literally just fly off the map"
7:28 levy says "people would hack the game"
7:30 levy says "and then fly off the map and then"
7:31 levy says "and and shoot from the ceil- from the sky"
7:34 levy says "alright, good luck, so this is kinda like wall hacks here"
7:37 levy says "i love this little animation by the way cause the rook doesn't even move"
7:40 levy says "i just find it very funny"
7:41 levy says "um"
7:42 levy says "that's how you castle, right"
7:44 levy says "i was a maple story guy, alright"
7:46 levy says "he can't do the same thing because number 1 uh"
7:48 levy says "the pawn is just hanging uh so in all you know future lines it's a problem"
7:52 levy says "but really it's a problem if you start with e4 and then you take the pawn so"
7:56 levy says "magnus is-i-i-is not in a very good shape, i think early on and i actually quite like Fabiano's position"
8:01 levy says "knight to e6"
8:02 levy says "the bishop drops back to e2"
8:04 levy says "uh and now Magnus totally changes the characteristics of the position"
8:10 levy says "he takes the bishop"
8:13 levy says "Magnus identified that his worst piece is his light squared bishop"
8:16 levy says "it's because he has a bunch of pawns on light squares so he's gonna get rid of it"
8:20 levy says "put his knight on f5 and this is the position that he is going to work with"
8:23 levy says "Fabi plays a very simple move e3"
8:26 levy says "e3 is a problem"
8:29 levy says "i think- im not sure really what Magnus expected"
8:32 levy says "maybe he mostly expected bishop takes f5 but e3 is a problem cause even though this pawn is hanging cause of this absurd bishop from you know uh q47"
8:38 levy says "which is a bus in New York"
8:40 levy says "uh knight takes g3 just leads to more problems than it solves"
8:44 levy says "and"
8:48 levy says "Magnus thinks here and does not play a good move"
8:50 levy says "ok good is i mean well like."
8:52 levy says "his 'worst move' is the best move you've ever played in your life but"
8:56 levy says "b6, alright"
8:58 levy says "b6 uh is a problem"
9:02 levy says "it looks like it makes sense, it looks like this is the stronghold, and after this"
9:06 levy says "you know black is going to be able to create counterplay and the king is there"
9:10 levy says "unfortunately it is simply too slow"
9:16 levy says "and Fabi here plays a good move, he plays f4"
9:21 levy says "and Magnus is in trouble"
9:22 levy says "already"
9:24 levy says "uh the point is that"
9:29 levy says "its very hard for black to actually do anything"
9:34 levy says "like if you take on c5"
9:37 levy says "i take on c5"
9:39 levy says "if you try to play d4"
9:42 levy says "i mean at the very minimum you have no play"
9:44 levy says "you can try to get in, i take take"
9:45 levy says "i play e5 your bishop has no communication your queen has no communication"
9:49 levy says "and im gonna take this pawn by the way, just as a little side note, my queen from the corner is much better than yours"
9:54 levy says "this is very quickly spiraling"
9:55 levy says "knight h6 is the move chosen by Magnus because he's trying to play knight g4 and maybe f5"
10:00 levy says "you know if Magnus is able to play like f5 and knight g4 maybe he's gonna but this queenside"
10:06 levy says "is not very good"
10:08 levy says "he does play knight g4, Fabi brings the queen out"
10:10 levy says "controlling some important squares"
10:12 levy says "queen f3 and now rook c1"
10:15 levy says "and this is the beginning of a long set of problems for the reigning best player in the world"
10:22 levy says "there is absolutely nothing you can do here"
10:24 levy says "if you try to close the position"
10:26 levy says "white simply"
10:28 levy says "plays knight a5, for example, alright"
10:30 levy says "black plays rook c8"
10:32 levy says "and white now spends the rest of the game trying to break through"
10:35 levy says "not to mention the fact you can probably even sacrifice"
10:38 levy says "you can get three pawns for the knight"
10:40 levy says "and black is overwhelmed"
10:42 levy says "and i've got a pawn army that is just gonna, walk- you know- wa-wa-walk down the center of the board"
10:45 levy says "so this can't possibly work"
10:47 levy says "Magnus plays bc5 okay"
10:50 levy says "Fabiano plays knight c5, he does this so that his rook can approach the c pawn"
10:54 levy says "and now the only thing that Magnus can possibly do here is play e5"
10:57 levy says "which was his plan all along to create counterplay, white's gotta be a little bit careful here"
11:03 levy says "Fabi takes on e5, uh"
11:05 levy says "black cannot take with the knight"
11:06 levy says "taking with the knight is bad, it leads to only more problems"
11:10 levy says "if you go for this trade, white completely dominates you positionally, this is not what you want"
11:14 levy says "instead Magnus takes with the bishop"
11:17 levy says "and now we have rook c1"
11:18 levy says "rook c1 voluntarily - this a great game being played by Fabiano"
11:22 levy says "he has multiple options here but he plays rook c1"
11:24 levy says "gives up the pawn in front of his king"
11:27 levy says "and plays rooks takes c6, a beautiful move"
11:31 levy says "an absolutely beautiful move"
11:33 levy says "the queen's under attack, the bishop needs protection"
11:35 levy says "you can't move the queen though, because your king never castled"
11:40 levy says "and after king e8 bishop b5"
11:43 levy says "you're mated"
11:44 levy says "if you go here this is a double check and a mate"
11:47 levy says "and Magnus is not going to lose the game like that so"
11:50 levy says "he plays knight e5"
11:53 levy says "defensive shapeshifting"
11:55 levy says "leaving the bishop hanging"
11:57 levy says "the queen is counterattacked, you cannot take the queen because you lose your queen"
12:00 levy says "so the only thing we can do here is rook takes f6, knight takes f3, and by a miracle - not a miracle he obviously planned it"
12:05 levy says "the bishop is hanging"
12:07 levy says "and even though this bishop is hanging, this bishop is hanging, this rook is hanging, that rook is hanging"
12:11 levy says "king takes b2 because he could've played bishop b4 check"
12:16 levy says "but then the king would've attacked the rook"
12:18 levy says "so you're still not fast enough"
12:21 levy says "and when the dust settles with king b2 and knight d2"
12:24 levy says "rook c7 it looks like Magnus Carlsen is absolutely on the ropes"
12:29 levy says "looks like he's on the ropes, i mean he's just getting mated right like"
12:33 levy says "if black plays rook g7 here, defending"
12:36 levy says "i mean. white, well white can't play bishop g6 because rook takes g6 but white can play a whole lotta things like for example rook a6"
12:42 levy says "take this pawn, bulldoze, black's king is stuck on the back rank, this knight is basically trapped and gonna get uh, you know, taken by the bishop"
12:48 levy says "so i don't know if Fabi missed this move or it was absolutely his plan to go for this position"
12:55 levy says "but in this position, black can still castle"
12:59 levy says "that is the hero's calling of this entire game"
13:05 levy says "it's the fact that in these little moments, on the 25th move black can still castle that way"
13:10 levy says "now, having said that"
13:12 levy says "maybe instead of entering this long sequence"
13:16 levy says "Fabi here should've simply backed up"
13:19 levy says "should've played defense and maintained a level of pressure in this position"
13:23 levy says "black would've gone rook b8"
13:25 levy says "white maybe would've had to go bishop c1 which is a little depressing"
13:27 levy says "and then after castles"
13:30 levy says "you know maybe rook f1" defending your queen, the bishop has to come here"
13:34 levy says "you kinda go king a1 so you can try to take the bishop, the bishop goes here"
13:38 levy says "maybe you play e4 to open the center, very complicated game, totally not over"
13:41 levy says "but under some pressure"
13:43 levy says "but this sequence was entered"
13:46 levy says "and now Fabi has to win an endgame"
13:48 levy says "the way to win this endgame is to bring the rook to a6, pick up the pawn on a7 and try to win"
13:52 levy says "now i have no clue why he didn't go for this"
13:55 levy says "i have a feeling it's because the counterplay to his own e pawn scared him"
14:00 levy says "but you don't take, what you have to do now is play the absurd king to c1"
14:05 levy says "the knight now has to move, if it goes here it blocks the rook"
14:09 levy says "if it goes to f3, now you take and after rook to e3, you have bishop takes g6 and it cannot be taken because rook g7 is a mate"
14:17 levy says "now"
14:18 levy says"why does this not work"
14:20 levy says "why does this not work right away"
14:24 levy says "why does this not work, because the knight was never forced to move"
14:27 levy says "and now after knight c4 check it's a very different story"
14:30 levy says "rook c3"
14:31 levy says "there's all sorts of ways right"
14:33 levy says "so Fabiano would've had to find rook here, rook here"
14:37 levy says "and then the inbetween move king c1"
14:38 levy says "and that's a very important move, it's a very hard detail to find with 15 minutes on the clock"
14:42 levy says "not the mention the fact um"
14:44 levy says "at this point the players were wearing heart rate monitors ok"
14:48 levy says "and im gonna pull this up for you really quick"
14:50 levy says "so there's this great shot of the players"
14:53 levy says "uh they have cameras on the board so you can see them"
14:55 levy says "and they're wearing heart rate monitors and they're on headphones"
14:58 levy says "they're not listening to you know any moves obviously"
15:00 levy says "uh but uh they have heart rate monitors"
15:03 levy says "this is the most absurd one by far"
15:06 levy says "by far"
15:07 levy says "alright like i uh"
15:10 levy says "Carlsen's heart rate is half of Fabiano's"
15:13 levy says "not exactly but- and this is crunch time of the game"
15:18 levy says "NUTS!"
15:18 levy says "i mean dude's heart rate is like - 72 is like me walking at a slow pace"
15:24 levy says "alright my resting heart's rate like 59, 60"
15:28 levy says "138 is unbelievable, i mean that is my heart rate when i play like, play squash"
15:33 levy says "and you know im not saying he's unheal- im saying i feel like it's pretty normal"
15:37 levy says "it's completely absurd i mean Magnus is absolutely cold blooded and i don't know if he's worked on breathing techniques"
15:41 levy says "meditation, i don't know if he has nutrition coach that has told him this, or if he is just built different"
15:47 levy says "as this kids say but"
15:48 levy says "yea here the game starts heating up"
15:50 levy says "we have f5 played uh"
15:52 levy says "Fabiano you know going straight at Magnus and uh you know Magnus coming back with the knight"
15:56 levy says "forcing a rook endgame"
15:58 levy says "but unfortunately even though it looks like black's king position is totally collapsing"
16:02 levy says "rook d2 check"
16:04 levy says "king c1"
16:06 levy says "and rook d3"
16:07 levy says "and Magnus Carlsen, one of the best endgame players in the world when he's attacking"
16:12 levy says "he's also one of the best endgame players in the world when he's defending"
16:16 levy says "and practically speaking, you know, his-his rooks are going to cause some problems here"
16:19 levy says "pawn takes f7 is played, king g7, how do you break through?"
16:24 levy says "it's crazy because for a brief moment Fabiano is up two pawns and looks like he's about to win a third"
16:29 levy says "but black is just in time with counterplay, it's nuts"
16:33 levy says "it looks like you can play rook f5 rook e3 rook h5"
16:37 levy says "but i win just enough pawns that it simply does not matter"
16:41 levy says "rook f7, rook f7 king f7 and suddenly black is fine"
16:44 levy says "not only is black fine he's almost playing for a win with king g6"
16:47 levy says "like it's nuts"
16:48 levy says "rook f4"
16:50 levy says "rook e3"
16:52 levy says "g4"
16:53 levy says "pawn takes"
16:54 levy says "rook g4"
16:55 levy says "king f6"
16:58 levy says "there's only one pawn advantage for Fabi"
17:00 levy says "how is he going to prove it, it's gonna have to come down to these outside pawns"
17:04 levy says "here he goes with h5"
17:05 levy says "now the only defensive move here is rook f3"
17:10 levy says "the point is that if you take on e4, rook f7 comes in and"
17:14 levy says "there's no way to check the king, rook f3"
17:16 levy says "protects the king"
17:18 levy says "threatens to go here, he could've gone to for example a3"
17:21 levy says "but that allows for example rook g8"
17:24 levy says "rook f7, rook here"
17:25 levy says "so Magnus has to play rook f3 so that his rooks communicate via the pawn on the f-file"
17:32 levy says "rook f3, he gives up the pawn on e4"
17:34 levy says "he takes the pawn on f7"
17:37 levy says "Fabiano goes for a 1-pawn advantage endgame, the boys got 6 minutes on the clock"
17:41 levy says "Magnus' heartrate is that as if he was asleep"
17:44 levy says "rook c3 check, king d2"
17:46 levy says "rook c7"
17:47 levy says "and now Fabi's gonna make progress"
17:49 levy says "rook a6, king d3, a4, king e4, king d5"
17:52 levy says "marching to the center of the board"
17:54 levy says "black cannot go for this pawn, if the king crosses the 6th l- the 6th rank, he goes to b7"
17:59 levy says "oo- sorry, you take on a7"
18:02 levy says "you take on a7 and then"
18:04 levy says "you start pushing, but the way you win here, the real way you win here"
18:07 levy says "is you try to cut the king off as far away as possible"
18:11 levy says "rook e7 is the dagger, rook d7 is also winning but rook e7 and now the king cannot cross"
18:17 levy says "king cannot cross, eh- uh, when the king cannot come help"
18:20 levy says "you're just going to promote the pawn"
18:21 levy says "so"
18:23 levy says "Magnus has to stay on the 7th rank"
18:25 levy says "he is holding the line, tug of war"
18:28 levy says "rook e6"
18:29 levy says "and this is perhaps the most absurd moment of this entire game"
18:34 levy says "rook e6 is really nasty"
18:37 levy says "the point of rook e6 is that if you just play king g7 right"
18:40 levy says "now im gonna start making progress on the a-file"
18:44 levy says "and if you just keep waiting for me im gonna run"
18:48 levy says "if you go a6, pretty easy, i pick up the pawn"
18:50 levy says "right"
18:53 levy says "so the point of this move is to get a move out of black, now the crazy thing is"
18:56 levy says "the winning move for uh - for - the drawing move for black is a5"
19:01 levy says "which is a wild move"
19:03 levy says "throwing the pawn forward"
19:05 levy says "if king c5 going after the pawn just rook f5 and of course i just win h5 pretty self explanatory but what about king c6"
19:11 levy says "now if rook f5 you lose, h6 i get to b6, i get to a6, i win the pawn"
19:16 levy says "so"
19:17 levy says "you have to draw with rook f4"
19:19 levy says "if king b5, rook f5, so this is the way you create the counterplay"
19:23 levy says "and if king c4, rook f4, king b5 rook f5"
19:26 levy says "this is the way you draw"
19:27 levy says "king a6 rook h5 rook b6 you try to go for this"
19:30 levy says "king g7 rook b5 rook h8"
19:32 levy says "king a5 king f6, you can cut the king off but it's not enough"
19:37 levy says "because i can cut your king off too"
19:39 levy says "i can cut your king off and you never get out"
19:42 levy says "very subtle, very subtle details here there is not gonna be on any sort of test"
19:45 levy says "and the funny thing is Magnus Carlsen"
19:47 levy says "misses the defensive technique and now has one minute remaining on the clock"
19:51 levy says "he's on the ropes, a5"
19:53 levy says "rook f5, rook e5, Magnus goes back to f6 disallowing the king from entering"
19:59 levy says "now, the way you win here with white"
20:01 levy says "is very very tricky"
20:04 levy says "it's very subtle"
20:06 levy says "you cannot just go rook e7 and take this pawn"
20:08 levy says "and the crazy thing is"
20:10 levy says "that is exactly what Fabiano does and the game is now a draw"
20:14 levy says "the game is not a draw"
20:18 levy says "it's absurd"
20:20 levy says "and if you know nothing about endgames this will absolutely blow your mind okay"
20:25 levy says "so the real reason this endgame is winning"
20:27 levy says "is because white can run the king this way toward this pawn and start everything with this move rook to g5"
20:37 levy says "the point of rook g5 is that if king h6 is played"
20:40 levy says "you have this trade, this is the most important part"
20:42 levy says "and now this is winning for white"
20:45 levy says "king c6 king f7 king b7 king f6 and if black could go here black would be drawing, black is a square too short"
20:52 levy says "and now white wins"
20:53 levy says "so by putting the rook on g5 you constantly create this threat"
20:56 levy says "now black has a problem right"
20:58 levy says "black has to wait, black plays something like rook f7 of course the king just gets in"
21:02 levy says "so let's say black plays rook a6, you walk over right"
21:06 levy says "let's say black goes back"
21:07 levy says "you can keep walking closer"
21:08 levy says "let's say king c5 uhhhh rook e6"
21:12 levy says "and now you make a run for it down the middle"
21:14 levy says "it's a slow process you have to get all the pieces in the right spots"
21:18 levy says "and then you make a run for it"
21:22 levy says "unfortunately in the game Fabiano goes here"
21:27 levy says "and he is maybe still winning if he departs the position"
21:32 levy says "but he cannot take"
21:35 levy says "which is nuts"
21:37 levy says "because we enter something called the Vancura position"
21:42 levy says "the Vancura position is a sideways lateral defensive technique"
21:46 levy says "rook f5" check, king c4"
21:49 levy says "and now"
21:51 levy says "black just goes here"
21:55 levy says "now you might be looking at this and going 'what about rook takes h5?'"
21:58 levy says "yes i know"
21:59 levy says "ook"
22:00 levy says "something like this"
22:01 levy says "and then the pawn promotes"
22:03 levy says "some of you might be wondering how is this possible like i-isn't it very easy for white to simply play king b4 and keep walking"
22:10 levy says "the problem is you don't have the space to hide the king"
22:15 levy says "anywhere you move the king now, rook f5, king b6, rook here, here"
22:20 levy says "anywhere you move the king you are stuck getting checked"
22:24 levy says "you have absolutely no place to hide with the king"
22:27 levy says "this is the problem, whereas"
22:30 levy says "if black had taken this pawn which is what Fabiano quickly calculated"
22:36 levy says "he has time"
22:38 levy says "why does he have time?"
22:40 levy says "he can hide from the checks
22:43 levy says "he can hide from the checks"
22:44 levy says "look"
22:45 levy says "here, check - here, check"
22:50 levy says "here, check - here, check"
22:54 levy says "oops"
22:58 levy says "that doesn't exist"
23:01 levy says "here"
23:03 levy says "so suddenly"
23:06 levy says "it's a draw, this is the Vancura position"
23:09 levy says "you defend the pawn from the side so the rook cannot move"
23:12 levy says "and this pawn exists so that it cannot be taken"
23:17 levy says "king d4 it looks like it might be winning"
23:19 levy says "Magnus just wont take it"
23:22 levy says "he's just not gonna take it"
23:33 levy says "he's just not gonna take it, he's just not gonna take it"
23:25 levy says "and the thing is you can get the pawn to h6, it doesn't make any difference to me
23:31 levy says "im not- im-"
23:32 levy says "and now it's a draw
23:34 levy says "i sack my rook and it's stalemate"
23:37 levy says "so it's crazy that you would think that being up two pawns in a rook endgame is a win, it's not"
23:42 levy says "it's not"
23:43 levy says "Fabiano cannot leave his pawn"
23:46 levy says "and the second that he tries, Magnus will check him"
23:48 levy says "he will just check him"
23:51 levy says "and there is nothing you can do, you are stuck in a vortex, it looks like you are getting mated"
23:56 levy says "but there is nothing to be done"
23:57 levy says "nothing, rook c6"
23:59 levy says "rook f6, you can never get too close to your pawn"
24:02 levy says "the second you get close to your pawn i check you"
24:03 levy says "you cannot hide your king, now i take the pawn"
24:06 levy says "i don't even have to take the pawn by the way but i take the pawn"
24:09 levy says "you still cannot get away"
24:13 levy says "king g8 rook f6 king g7, this is an unbelievable turn of events"
24:18 levy says "Fabiano ends up sacrificing his rook"
24:21 levy says"and the players play it out to kings, and Magnus Carlsen wins this little freestyle chess challenge in Singapore"
24:27 levy says "Fabiano Caruna"
24:29 levy says "was Magnusing the man himself"
24:31 levy says "he was Magnusing Magnus himself"
24:33 levy says "we have seen Magnus beat people like this all the time"
24:36 levy says "he got him on the ropes, he got him to the critical moment"
24:40 levy says "and now before he went into the position"
24:43 levy says "he needed to be a touch more patient"
24:45 levy says "this position is a win if the king is on b5"
24:48 levy says "so if we get"
24:51 levy says "here"
24:52 levy says "and you play rook e7 king h6"
24:55 levy says "this is still a draw i think"
24:58 levy says "because the king cannot hide"
25:00 levy says "but you're winning here because you just wait"
25:02 levy says "you wait, you get the passage at the right moment, you wait, rook f5"
25:08 levy says "you wait and now you're winning"
25:11 levy says "right because now you made it through, you made it through"
25:14 levy says "Fabiano had to be patient, he had to wait at the tollbooth for 2 seconds"
25:18 levy says "but he was like 'what, im up two pawns"
25:20 levy says "and suddenly Vancura defense"
25:24 levy says "crazy, wild stuff, Magnus wins again, dodges the bullets like, like in the Matrix"
25:29 levy says "and uh gets the job done"
25:31 levy says "folks friendly reminder displate sponsored us today"
25:34 levy says "uh and uh you can check them out for their black friday sale"
25:38 levy says "get up to 44% off, uh i got - i got a few awesome ones here"
25:42 levy says "im gonna hang them up"
25:43 levy says "and um that's all i have for you today, you know by the way"
25:46 levy says "Walmart chessboard is out in 2100 Walmarts, go check that out"
25:51 levy says "chessly 2.0 is on the way"
25:52 levy says "all that good stuff i've been announcing, ill see you in the next video"
25:54 levy says "world chess championship begins in 3 days"
25:57 levy says "get out of here"
Wow
If I had a dollar for every video Levy made about Magnus, then I would have a dollar for every video Levy made about Magnus.
i could buy an RTX in that case
Why didn't I think of that?
nah really
every minute in Africa, 60 seconds passes
He makes about $4,000 for each video he makes about Magnus
For future viewers, the title was "magnus calson losess?"
Then it was : My final video about magnus, then it was "How?"
Who is Calson? Omg
aint it carlsen
Now it's how did he do this?
Bro changed the title 3 times.
The title is the biggest lie I've heard all year
For all the people who came here after he changed the title: The Original Title was My Last Video about Magnus Carlsen
@@martinmichels631thanks
@@martinmichels631 funny. I saw the title and I felt it was for sure about magnus
Title - My FINAL Magnus Video
If Levy ever does a magnus video again i will laugh so hard
Haha when I started watching this video this was the title and he changed it now
So he will not stop milking magnus
7 Magnus videos in a row, the channel should be named Magnuschess
Magnus
8 within a month magnicisn school of chess
ikr.
its almost like we want magnus content
Maybe GothamCarlsen?
People troll levi for making video on magnus
But they all enjoy magnus Carlson games ❤ 0:59
He does
Once again, who the hell is this Carlson?
7:07 the castle was scary
0:01 that stare though. That’s why we all keep coming back.
It was different for sure, almost agadmator-like
Least clickbaity GothamChess title:
Edit: This comment was made when the title was "My final Magnus video"
new title: How?
newer title: How did he do this?
Oldest title: MAGNUS FINALLY LOSES?!
Let be honest, we all know that Magnus is a neverending source for Levy to mill
mill
mill
mill
mill
15:20
For Fabiano this is the most tense game that might decide his future career as a chess player. For Magnus it is another day in the office, he literally doesn't care
Stop the cap Levy keep them Magnus videos coming I'm watching them ALL
I could've sworn Levy said he wouldn't use any sponsors anymore
:o
Any chance of a source for this?
On a serious note, it's reassuring to know that the wealthy remain slaves to capitalism.
2:28 but the second row is shuffled too, you know!
@14:50
Fabi: I'm outplaying Magnus! This is great!
Magnus: *Yawn* obvious draw in 45 moves
0:30 Actually I’ve never lost a classical world championship game against Magnus Carlsen either
Learning that Levy played combat arms is a lore drop I was not expecting😅
3:01 end of yapping
It's only been a minute bro
It's a talent
Chad 🗿
😂
Thanks!
gothamchess is like Magnus carlsen if you imagine him as Magnus carlsen
Keep thriving levy i will be super happy when you become GM love from Egypt ❤️🇪🇬
then ig youll never be happy :(
24:29 then fabi fabi'd himself. classic time trouble from fabi!!
3:00 yapping stops
Hey Levy I know you make too many videos on Magnus. Sometimes it's annoying to be honest. But still. Thank you for showing us these magnificent and unbelieveable games. My Goodness! That last part of the video! I was completely shocked in the rook and king endgame. It was fire
I feel like my average play session in chess could easily be one of these videos due to my playstyle of
Step 1: Get the queen out of her prison of pawns
Step 2: get her into the enemy's pawn/special piece line without getting her killed.
Step 3: just kill everything I can get away with.
Step 4: checkmate once I have enough piece advantage that they just can't do anything against it.
It works for me. even Glados the Chess bot Agrees that I'm stupid if the piece I moved wasn't a queen.
I love when you upload about magnus please keep it going
Gotham playing combat arms before was not something I expected to hear in 2024 😂
didn't notice it was 960 until 3:00
0:15 magnus mentioned
0:16 * new record
What was the clicking sound at that mark?
4:50 dude that castling looks so cursed
nvm 7:07 looks even more cursed
2:27 he became british 😭
The laugh I made when the heart rate monitors came on the screen 😂😂😂😂
One of the best recaps so far
Levy somehow achieved to have 3 different titles in 47 minutes🤣🤣🤣
I think people underestimate how good a salesman Gotham is like am I really about to buy a displate rn
i think this is the fist video i see from Levy. Like in 6 months (some time around that) i never see he do a stop in a recap. Amazing.
Now you can look at your favorite team disappointing you in the World Cup😂
"His worst move is the best move youve played in your life"😭🙏
that is probably the most exciting game i've seen this year
The combat arms references 😭😭, big throwback to my childhood too. F2P multiplayer shooter with an infected mode, but soooo many hackers. Fly hacks, wall hacks, aim-bot, etc.. was a great game besides the cheaters.
Love how Gotham immediately takes down him sponsor
Combat Arms is a lost gem. Quarentine was amazing, sucks its dead after it was sold.
U can see the edits while he explains the endgame. Shows how difficult it is that he had to do this multiple times even after looking at the engine beforehand
This format really highlights the differences in Magnus and Fabi’s strengths
Magnus is the player with the most talent, you can see that in Blitz, Rapiid and freestyle Chess. In normal high ranking Tournaments he dominates not that much.
I lost to Magnus, but not in chess 😳
What?
I don't get it?
its november, hes referring to nnn
Inaccurate title: "FINAL Magnus video TODAY" is more like it.
sorry gotham, but underground gold vault sounds more like artemis fowl than it does harry potty
This variation is fun to watch the top level players play. No memorizing of 15-20 moves regardless of which opening is played.
That title is a lie and we 100% know
Such good memories with Combat Arms, remember scorpions vs spiders? Good old times haha
Levy wasnt lying about the Vancouver (not sure on spelling) endgame damn the subtle details in endgames blow my mind . I learned something new today
Magnus is so good at chess that his initials are M.C.
Ngl, the game was absolute fire, levy(and stockfish) kinda hated the opening from magnus but the way he escaped that big trouble and entered the rooks endgame was insane
Anyone instantly come down to see any comments about Levis "betwain" and pause? 😂 2:26
Happy to have all the GMs here in Singapore :)
0:30 That's not true, I have never lost a game in a world championship match against Magnus Carlsen either
Haven't watched the video, but from the thumbnail I predict that somebody sacrificed THE RUCK!!!!!
This should be the world chess championship match, fabiano vs magnus
Man, Combat Arms mentioned. There's a throwback.
Original title: MAGNUS FINALLY LOSES?!
Magnus has nerves of steel
1:41 NOOOOOOOO LEVY WENT TO THE DARK SIDE
WOO COMBAT ARMS WAS MENTIONED!!!! i still play combat arms reloaded here and there
Funny you say RuneScape I used to play it as a kid and I'm sitting here playing it now. Hope you have a great day my man. Thanks for all you do.
Very instructive endgame; thanks for the instruction, Levy.
7 milkings in a row. We could feed a baby cow for years with this amount if milk.
the magnus carlson glaze is unreal
Fabi: draws against Magnus
Levy: Magnus wins again!
The heart rate in high stress positions might be indicative of what Magnus is known for as a player, his incredible stamina in long games.
-yo i wanna play queens gambit
-but we play fischer random
-I WANNA PLAY QUEENS GAMBIT
I really like Fischer chess. Please make more videos about it
This was one of my favorite videos of yours
Great video, I enjoyed your explanation of the ending.
He Gotham to the ropes, he Gotham to the critical moment...
But he's Fabi Caruana
usually i skip them but this displate sponsor really spoke to my millenial brain .
Final Magnus video ❌
Somemore of my future Husband ✅
I used to refer to girls as my future ex wives. I have two real ex wives now. Definitely not working on a third.
Pls stop hating him,he teaches us by magnus game,he analyses it and teaches us
The Title was - I went to Diddy's with Magnus?????
I PLAYED COMBAT ARMS SO MUCH, that’s crazy
You're telling me you can castle after the rook moves diagonally??????
" I will be my own sponsor from this day foward" - Levey, Yesterday.
More freestyle chess, it’s really fun and new
Not Levy melking the chessgod again
The endgame was fascinating
such an insane endgame wow
Magnus mentioned:Title
Ladies and gentleman: 0:02
Magnus mentioned again: 0:16
Fabiano mentioned: 0:30
Magnus mentioned again: 0:38
An ad started not even 1 minute in the video
Levy never fails to mention magnus, Thanks to him he has all his channel growth. It should be named Gotham & Magnus chess
Bro worships Magnus
have you thought about making another video playing vs chatgpt maybe it has improved?
Damn that endgamee defending two pons and a rock with a rock !
Dude combat arms was amazing and I also tried it since I loved MapleStory 😂
Hikaru was saying on stream today that Gotham might not know the Vancura defense, but Gotham covered it in a rook and pawn endgame video like 3 years ago lol
For reference the last title was: Magnus finally lost?
Man I loved Combat Arms
GothamChess is the n°1 channel for Video Tittle per Video ratio. This channel has more Video Tittles than Video themselves 😂😂
Levy can we get a preview/deep dive of Gukesh and ding??
Dude has a Magnus streak of 7
this endgame made me realise that ill never be grandmaster...
