Boone's story was very personal for me and felt like one of the better pieces of writing a video game has ever seen. My wife killed herself a long time ago and every step of Boone's story was so familiar: hardening yourself to close out the grief, withdrawing from connection to others, blaming yourself and seeking self destruction... and then, finally, seeing that it is possible to move on. That there is more left in the world to do, even alone with those memories. It was hard to get through but, in a good way I guess. They really don't make games this good often enough.
Going full John Brown on Cottonwood and Fortification Hill with Boone is always the highlight of any non-Legion playthrough. It can also lead to some hilarity, should Boone decide mid-tyrannicide that now is a good time to revisit Bitter Springs.
He keeps drawing a machete and just charging at the legion in my playthrough. Like, Boone, you’re in a T shirt my guy one hit and you’re done just use the pistol I gave you if you run out of sniper ammo 😂
@@lydiscott “Boone, I’m glad you’re having this moment of resolution, but I’m about to be ballistic fisted the second we get done speaking and the time starts moving again. Couldn’t you have waited until we were at least outside the tent?”
This exact thing happened to me while I was going through the legion camp at Fortification Hill, before I could kill an incoming enemy that would kill me. He decides it’s a nice time to chat. I was not pleased when I got out of that conversation 😂😭
I cant count Manny as a friend to Boone, if your Ex Military Special Forces "friends" pregnant Wife is missing, possibly kidnapped by brutal slavers I think you would go with them and do whatever it took to get them back, risks be damned. Maybe for an ordinary citizen that would be too much to ask, just whatever emotional support or practical help like asking around or finding someone to investigate would be as much as you could expect but for an Ex Special Forces guy? Ride or Die, Manny wasn't even concerned.
There's a bit of subtext between Manny and Boone. Manny Vargas responds to the Confirmed Bachelor perk, heavily suggesting he's gay. With that in mind, his dislike of Carla Boone probably has less to with her and more to do with unrequited feelings for his best friend.
See, im aware of the confirmed bachelor thing, but I never got the vibe that Manny has romantic feelings for Boone. For my male courier? Yes 🤣 for Boone? I dunnooooo. I could be wrong!
@@lydiscott It does annoy me slightly when someone sees someone else who is gay, and the immediately assumes they must be attracted to anyone they're close to. Though I guess it happens with cross gender friendships between straight people too...
@@lydiscott Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but to me, the way he talks about Carla when you ask him just drips with jealousy. When you best friend tells you their wife is gone, your first response, even if you don't like her, would be "let me get my gun, we'll go look for her". On the other hand, when the man you're in love with tells you his wife is gone, your first thought might just be "I have a chance now!" You'd probably feel incredibly guilty about that immediately, but it would explain Manny's response. EDIT: I think part of the issue is that the New Vegas had too few voice actors for way too many characters, and the one voicing Manny Vargas didn't necessarily emote the lines correctly. He might've missed the intended subtext himself.
The way Manny responds. He just seems oblivious to the courier hitting on him. Usually everyone else is flustered when you select the dialogue, but he just expresses annoyance and needs to let it out. The reason they made companions teleport when dismissing them was because Boone would go and find leigon camps and clear them out before the player ever found them.
If we were to determine what certain characters were in the fallout universe I always consider Six to be the wild card. A little bit goofy due to the bullet to the brain but nonetheless competent. Great video Lydi! Not gonna lie I have never taken Boone as a companion, Cass is just too much of a best girl. On your point of your grandfather not wanting to speak of war experiences, that hit home. One of my most vivid memories of my grandpa was when he was visiting and started talking about his service in WWII. I didn’t realize it at the time but he was telling me stories my dad had never heard since grandpa never spoke about the war. He was island hopping in Japan and credits the atomic bomb as the thing that saved his life. After the war he needed to work through his trauma so he moved to Alaska and became a gold miner. He did manage to hit some gold and even used his first nugget to make my grandma’s wedding ring. When Alaska became too harsh to survive in one winter he had to abandon everything but what his sled dogs could haul and moved back. Boone seems to have the same issue but lacks the space needed to work out his trauma. It’s a sad fact of the world. And its nice, in a way, that art exists to communicate these feelings and emotions in ways you may never be touched by. Thanks again for the video, see you in the next comment lol.

One of the things I like to do in RPGs like New Vages is construct a backstory for my character, and have that back story influence who my character is. In the case of New Vegas, my Courier was a former legionary. His tribe had been conquered by the legion, and he and his mother were enslaved. His mother was sold off, he doesn’t know to who or where, and he was indoctrinated into legion life. By either luck or the hand of fate, he got out during the first battle of Hoover Dam, where he was wounded and left for dead as the legion retreated. He crawled away to safety and realized he was free from the legion, so he shucked his old legion gear and escaped into the Mojave wasteland where he worked as a courier, trying to make enough money to buy his way further west to get as far from the legion as he could. But then the opening of NV happens, and everything changes. Against his will the courier gets wrapped up in the events of the main game, for awhile just focused on trying to save enough caps to buy his way to safety. But slowly his priorities start to shift. He sees the atrocities that the Legion commits from the outside for the first time in a long time. Nipton, attacking traders on the road, and yes, buying and selling Boone’s wife like a piece of property, just like they had done to his own mother. And he goes from wanting to run, to wanting to make things right. To settle the score with the legion. So he and Boone set out after bringing justice to Jeanie May, and they slowly bond over their shared hatred of the legion, and the pain it’s brought them. In time, they grow into grow into friends, even brothers in arms, with a goal: to break the legion so completely that it can never recover. And the Hoover Dam is going to be their fucking hammer. And of course they stormed Caesar’s camp, blew away every skirt boy that made the mistake of trying to stop them, charged into Caesar’s tent, and got rid of his tumor along with the rest of his head. You can’t *not* kick the legion’s teeth in if you’re traveling with Boone. It’s just too much fun.
