In terms of animation as a whole I do prefer the 93 if you consider the entire series vs the OVA. I love the smoother animation. One thing I’d love to see you analyze too is the Sonic CD animated shorts by Toei. Those are nice and short so they shouldn’t be too long to analyze. The sonic riders opening animation would also be a nice candidate for analysis too.

The only downsides with the OVA are the removal of a lot of the more bizarre moments that basically comprise JoJo in favor of a more gritty tone, Jotaro emerging from the oil truck fire looking less cool than just suddenly appearing behind DIO (even if it makes more sense), and DIO looking too bulky and ugly for his own good. Otherwise, the way that the DIO fight goes in the OVA is really great.

I enjoy both versions immensely. Even with the OVA's smoother animation, I can't choose between either one since they both provide such a great yet different experience despite adapting the same material. The TV anime feels more manga accurate not only in character designs but in tone, making use of great voice acting, score and colour swaps that pop off the screen.
Although, I would say that the new anime's strengths are best shown in part 5, so I'd highly recommend checking out either the Metallica fight or King Crimson introduction for the animation and direction.

I love how David Productions did Justice to JoJo's bizarre adventure with the adaptation it really needed considering its failures back in the day. And yes while in some parts the animation was rough and was later fixed in the Blue rays I still feel that despite all the time restraints they managed to give us an enjoyable time and keep the action consistent.
Also I love the In-between memes while it catches me off guard it's certainly very entertaining 😂😂.

I like both versions, they each have their strenghs and weaknesses. While I certainly enjoyed the fluid action and camera movements of the OVA with even some extra fighting scenes added, that were not in the manga, I also really like the detailed sharp art of the new series and its sound design. And even though it didn't have much sakuga for the climax, the tv series itself had quite a bunch of cool sakuga moments in it. The one that stuck most to me, was where they fought the voodoo doll stand in the hotel room. Also some of polnareffs action looked so well animated.

I like the direction a bit more in the ova version of the scene but i think the anime does basically everything else better lol (art, animation, music choice, voice acting, sound effects, etc.)
6:53 About that, basically every jojo part's production becomes kind of a mess at some point (you even have stone ocean which has been messy since the start unfortunately), so having multiple directors and supervisors working on one episode is kind of the standard for the latter stages of each part. Tthe fact that the staff is capable of pumping out incredibly well adapted and directed episodes even despite those circumstances speaks volumes about their talent and love for jojo

David Production nails the feeling of JoJo. For as well animated as the OVAs are, they lack the flair of Araki's manga. But I have to say that the fight between Jotaro and Dio in the OVA is a work of art! DP's Stardust Crusaders actually started off super strong in the animation department, leaps and bounds ahead of the previous JoJo anime they worked on, but you can notice a decrease in quality during the second half as it went on, which is a shame. Had it featured the same quality of animation I believe it would be a closer call between both versions of the Jotaro/Dio fight.

  • @zummone
    @zummone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

While reading about animation (mostly 3d but also 2d) I have learned of a thing called "meri hari" which is the sort of the Japanese concept of anticipation, used heavily in kabuki theater. Basically it involves taking the motion slow at the start and then JACK IT UP in speed towards the end, as a sinewavish shock effect. Videogames with good animations do this all the time and it feels wonderful, usually what you see with fixed-framerate keyframes is that the body kinda stops and then teleports to a much later motion state to emphasize weight displacement. What I mean is that what Hayama did here was astounding, not only did he apply that anticipation concept very neatly but as you noted he increased the framerate towards the end of the punch, effectively giving off double the meri hari impact it should have had, almost replicating a sort of high shutter speed effect. No teleporting, but increasing perceived proximity/danger through smoothness, as if it equated speed. I just know the first time you showed it during the beginning of the video I couldn't stop rewinding to watch it again lol, masterful sequence.
Personally, I'm a bit more of a fan of the OVA art direction where it comes to CD and colours (also I'm not a JoJo manga fan or even a fan at all, I just enjoy seeing stuff from it), but DP meticulously adapted all of it so credit where credit is due, blockier designs could more animation friendly.

@@A1000-b9s to be fair tho they couldn't possibly fit everything in the number of OVAs they were given, in fact the 90's OVAs start at the ndull fight and only later in the 2000's they adapted the stuff that came before and still had to cut a bunch of shit, and not all of their changes were bad, though I think the biggest problem is that they're kinda afraid of the more "bizarre" part of the series, unlike the anime which fully embraces it, so a lot of the wacky stuff is missing in favor of a more serious tone, and the characters unfortunately suffer from it and are turned into boring versions of themselves, and the art style is also more Kenshiro like than JoJo, though it's not always consistent cause some shots with Vanilla Ice and pretty much the entire Darby the gambler episode look more accurate to the manga art style, it's a little bit simplified for animation sake but still looked great, the whole OVA series looked good, but I wished they went with a more manga accurate style throughout all the episodes.

Looking at them side by side, each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses. The OVA seems to have more snappy, impactful animation, especially with the Anticipation of Jotaro's punch. There was a slow build up for a faster action. And which I think it looks better IMO. The TV series has the art and design more faithful to Araki's manga, which already looks beautiful. And to have Star Platinum's fist initially get bloody really puts the tension at the final fight better than the OVA. Interesting how the best posing and the use of sharp angular shapes are in different scenes in both. And IIRC, THE Satoshi Kon himself worked on the OVA as storyboarder and director of Ep 5.
IMO, it might be my bias, but I would prefer the TV series version despite the OVA having more snappy timing. ForgottenRelics, if you could, I would like to see an analysis of My Hero Academia or other anime by Studio Bones.

I disagree, the animation's better, which is to be expected when comparing a short OVA series to a full long TV series, but they don't really capture the flamboyant weird flare of Araki's work like the anime does, it's certainly cool, but trying to make everything more serious and gritty dampens contrast and makes the characters and story more boring and generic in my opinion, also I'm not the biggest fan of the more Kenshiro looking art style, it's not bad but I want the true Araki look with JoJo, which oddly does show up in the Darby OVA but not the rest of the series for some reason, seriously it's kinda jarring how off model the characters look compared to all the other episodes, and on the note of character designs the color schemes for characters are way better in the anime, and the dramatic color changes are a really neat touch, and I have to prefer the acting in the anime, especially for DIO, he sounds god awful in the OVAs, they just picked the least threatning old man ever, which I don't understand cause the drama cd from around that time had Norio Wakamoto who is the greatest contender for best DIO along with Takehito Koyasu as well as all the other actors being really well casted and doing a kickers performance but the OVAs just can't compete, not to mention that the OVAs had to cut a lot of the story which leaves some characters impoverished of their character development and such, so I have to prefer the anime adaptation overall.

also the OVAs aren't really non canon, they're just a limited retelling of the canon it's not like they made up a new story.

@@dyl_pickle16-mta48 I guess by that logic it isn't canon, but usually I reserve that term for made up filler stories, rather than adaptations that just couldn't quite get all the story as accurately as they wished.

you gotta do the whole episode, there's so many problems with the anime and its "faithful to the manga" structure, such as bringing out polnareff to job to DIO and forcing jotaro to distract him (wasting our time as viewers), whereas in the OVA polnareff actually helps jotaro by distracting DIO right before he discovers jotaro is alive!
it's mucy more than that too, there's so much that happens between joseph's blood being absorbed and DIO's death that was packed with effort and new action events being injected that they just ignored for "faithfulness" even when that stubborn approach david decided to take output a wholly inferior product
araki is not perfect, and the OVA was directed by the likes of katsuhiro otomo and satoshi kon. it's almost laughable to compare that stunning 93 OVA to david's carbon copy of the heavily flawed original.

I was originally going to cover the whole fight but there simply wasn't enough time, I think the fight takes place over at least 3 episodes in the tv anime and 2 in for the ova's. But it would genuinely take almost a month to make a side-by-side comparison like that.
It would either have to be a general overview or a comparison of a specific moment like this one :)
