Ran into exactly this problem using Dulux Easycare Kitchen paint. I thought Ihad degreased the old stuff pretty well, but still found that the Kitchen paint seemed to skin over pretty quick and then pull off and go all messy. Second coat went on a lot better. Found that using non-kitchen Easycare of the same colour for the first coat was much easier (and it has better flow than the Kitchen version) and a bit cheaper followed by a final coat of Kitchen gave me an overall better finish with less stressing.

I have had this with Dulux trade matt emulsion on one small section of a wall. I could sand it but I am tempted to BIN the whole section. Any thoughts? Definitely a problem with the older matt I painted over. Maybe not mist coated. Hard to say.

@@PaintingandDecorating Yes, something problematic about the whole room. Had to use Guardz on one section (didn't fully solve the bubbling but sorted the flashing). There is a bubbling up reaction. I think even with BIN I'd have trouble. Old distemper baked in or no mist coat, who knows? I think it must be old, cheap matt thrown on thick with a brush

    Thank you. Very informative.
My Dad was an old school painter and decorator. 7 years time-served as an apprentice. Sadly, he's no longer with us, so I can't ask his advice!
I have a question for you.
Two areas of painted walls in our house get persistent mould, despite many treatments. My husband put watered down pva glue on top, in a single effort to stop the mould.
We now have mould plus droplets of water dripping from the pva painted areas. Ons is in the ensuite (one outside wall). The other is in the utility room (two outside walls).
The bathroom has a new extractor fan but the utility hasn't got one.
Ang advice you could give would be very much appreciated 😉😊

@@susangardner940 unfortunately it's down to cold walls. You can remove the PVA with warm water and a cloth. You can buy an additive for paint to stop mold. Tough hard wearing paint is best also

    Very informative video 👍
You have to work quickly with acrylic based washable/ scrubbable paints when applying on Matt or vinyl matt surfaces. The first coats acts as a bit of a sealer and normally goes off quick.
Usually best to cut the room in let it go off then roll the walls and just leave it! DIYers tend to be slower and play around with the paint to much so run into problems.

I've tried all types of hardwearing washable/scrubbable paint and I still haven't found the magic formula how to get it right. I've tried adding paint conditioner, water, applying really fast but it still looks awful.
The main problem is that the likes of dulux advertise these types of paint for all rooms now, so if your painting a large area with a lot of light your doomed as you can't roll back into the section you've just done very well as it's already dried thus leading to roller marks and flashing everywhere.

Great video. I’ve a question. I’ve been painting onto walls that had a slight glossy wallpaper on. I didn’t do the research to buy a product like zinseer primer etc and I didn’t want to strip the wallpaper off.
But now I’m paying for it! I’ve applied about 2/3 layers of Matt white emulsion and it looked absolutely fine. But I’ve painted a wall with our colour we wanted and have done 2 coats. I noticed straight away there was a lot of mud cracking. Only really visible if you go close but still annoying.
I’ve applied zinseer mud cracking primer over the top of the colour and re painted and it sort of looks ok but still small areas have this mud cracking.
Before I paint with colour on the rest of the house, should I really strip the painted wallpaper completely to plaster or will I be ok applying some sort of wallpaper primer over the white I’ve already painted over the wallpaper?
    Sorry for the long question!

      Never use PVA.
There is wide choice of proper primers for the job that were tested and are warranted.
No paint manufacturer on the world is specifying use of the PVA for the simple reason that paint do not bond to PVA.
Using PVA in any dilution will sooner or later lead to the future failure of the bond between layers.

Just painting a new extension we had built and running into this problem or similar and with so much to do it’s making it very hard going.
I used Armstead contract Matt from Jewsons that I believe to be the same paint as the Dulux supermatt both from Akzanobel.
Brilliant paint even watered to 40% still has fantastic covering power. The issue however is using Dulux easyclean matt for topcoat as in places and especially corners it’s pulling the Armstead back off despite being given a few days to dry.
This is becoming a real pain and a worry because if it’s pulling the supermatt off is it not demonstrating it hasn’t penetrated the plaster surface which is the whole point of using it heavily diluted?
Vinyl emulsion is becoming very difficult to find in the DIY stores and if you do the price has gone crazy yet until recently it was the defecto paint that was cheap, why is this?
Another issue with the washable “easyclean” acrylic paints is cleaning of brushes, rollers and trays etc, it’s a nightmare to get it off.
Thanks for the video and highlighting these issues 👍

For best outcome I suggest to sand the walls with a coarse sand paper to roughen the surface. This way you get better coating, however still one has to paint the walls 2 or sometimes 3 times especially if using poor qualitu paint 🎨 or painting over dark colours. In between the coats I recommend to sand the wall also but this time with fine sand paper.

Hi there. Recently I replaced a length of coving that was loose and, having painted it with white emulsion, got some on the grey painted wall beneath (which needed repainting anyway). However, having put a coat of cut in grey over the white (it had dried a day or two) I’ve come to do the two new grey coats on the whole wall and it’s reacting along the length of the coving on the area below where the white was.
Would you advise letting the recent coat of grey dry for a few extra days then try sanding and redoing?? It literally is darker (and looks cracked/crazing like) along the bottom of the coving where the white paint was. The white is Dulux normal matt white, the grey is a valspar (mixed for a colour match) emulsion

Had this happen on a ceiling a few months back. Used contract Matt for most cost on new plaster. Watered right down. Then Valspar scrubbable Matt as a top coat. Didn’t look like yours to start with but once it was dry it all bubbles up cracked out and flaky. I’m wondering weather it’s some reaction with the pigment of the first coat (contract Matt) reworking up and mixing in with the high vinyl content of the valspar paint? Just my thought. Almost like pulling the chalkyness of the contract into the vinyl paint. Safe to say I ended up scraping it off. A coat of zinsser peel stop and 2 coats of Dulux vinyl Matt ontop was sound!

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You may not be finishing your rolling correctly
Too mush pressure on one side and using the wrong pile can result in tram lines.. you will always get a certain amount of orange peel effect... and it also could be in the plaster itself.. bad plastering can result in tram lines.. hope that helps.

I did a mist coat of crown matt white emulsion paint. Once dry the paint is chalky. Followed the instructions for diluting the paint but it's just so chalky that when you touch it it's like you've been playing with chalk. Cleaned it as much as possible to get rid of the chalkiness and painted over with dulux easycare matt paint. The paint applied ok and wasn't clumping. However, the dulux paint is peeling off like dry glue once it dried. Can someone give advice on how to fix this? Both the chalky mist coat and peeling dulux easycare paint? Good thing i've only done one wall.

Put 1st coat of vinyl, went on fiine. Every time i put second coat on, bubbles appear. Tried to scrap all off like a sheet once. Scrubbable paint like the valspar in this video has a greater quantity of acrylic binders rather than vinyl binders. Acrylic is more durable and faster drying then vinyl, so it pulls much quicker than say vinyl matt, vinyl silk, soft sheen which have vinyl polymer binders.
Always thin by a minimum of 5% with water to allow more open time when applying the first coat .
Scrubbable matts and acrylic eggshells are both heavy on the acrylic and will both suffer with faster drying.

As I understand it you painted the supermatt on the whole board, then Valspar scrubbable a) to the right rolling many times and b) to the left rolling quickly. Rubbed down and then went over the whole board again with the scrubabble.
But you said you would use an easy care bathroom paint at the beginning but then no mention of it again?...Sorry but I have found it a bit confusing.

I kind of understand the theory but why does it still sound wrong in my head? On the back of the Can it also says new and bare surfaces thin down the product first? Any ideas? @@PotentialTechniques your welcome cheap paint and thinned paint can cause mist. Rolling too fast and using the wrong nap on the roller and depending on the texture of the surface your rolling. But you always get a little splatter just depends how much.
