  • The Last Two Years of Updates : From Alpha to Today in Elite Dangerous Odyssey
On this day two years ago we were in the midst of the Elite Dangerous Odyssey public alpha test. A lot has happened in the years since Odyssey launched and as we approach update 15 we thought we’d take a look back and see just what has been added to the game overall since Odyssey dropped.

I will always hold out hope for ship interiors. I know, unlikely, but one can hope. With the end of new player factions being formed, I wouldn't mind seeing player bases and towns become a thing. I think that would absolutely result in humanities expansion into the rest of the Galaxy, simply because there would be more places worth going to. I think it needn't be very different from fleet carriers. X amount of credits gets you the basic base with hangars and adding services or additional buildings would add to the weekly upkeep. Throw in a mechanic to attract NPC residents and you have player owned towns/business empires. You could set up a mine, tourist attraction, agricultural, or industrial site. I admit it isn't my kind of gameplay. But I know there are a lot of people who would be into it, and for an explorer/miner like me, it would mean more places to see, and sell ores to. Could even be someplace for the more piratical people to hide, out on a rim system among friends.

@@GaryMillerUK I earned a fleet carrier on my exploration account doing Exo Biology. Took one week of game sessions.
Now that carrier is 26,000 ly from the bubble and I can dock and walk around the interior any time I like.
So, my suggestion would be to take a long trip in your explorer, scanning exobiology along the way. When you return to the bubble you might have enough for a carrier of your own.
Fit a Vista Genomics and you can scan one Tectonica a month (100m) to pay for your upkeep, selling that data to your own carrier.

I was part of the Alpha testing. It was getting better and better as time went on, and then the official release happened! Well, they wound up using a build of the game from before fleet carriers! Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!
As always, you and Rheeney do fantastic work! Your voice is so iconic, and Rheeney's camera work is second to none! I'm glad to have you both in the Elite community. Have a great day! And God Bless! o7

Man... it's all really come a long way, hasn't it? It's easy to lose sight when all you hear from folks is "what's new" or "give us more". Warts and all, I'm glad that Elite's still alive and slowly plodding forward, even as people call it dead at every opportunity they get. Here's to hoping the future's just a little brighter in Update 15.

I'm just gonna put my wishlist here that I would want in the coming years xD
    1) Awesome ship interiors(with some interior gameplay)
    2) OnFoot Thargoid Combat
    3) More types of planets and moons, eventually leading to ELWs
    4) Player owned surface installations(maybe with slight modifications and lots of livery options)
    5) Expansion of Fleet Carrier interiors and lots of livery options, add some gameplay elements as well
    6) Another graphics upgrade
    7) Improved AI for NPC crew
If they put all of that in a DLC and sell it then I'll be more than will to buy :)

I have a sneaky feeling we're going to start nudging towards on foot thargoid missions, starting with finding bits and pieces they've left behind, and building up to face to face contact. I don't know if we're going to see that in *this* expansion, seems equally plausible that "in-person" contact with thargoids (and maybe guardians?) could be the launch feature of the next expansion, but I've got an idea that we might start heading in that direction before long.
Not for U15, or the next expansion even, but I still hold out hope for ship interiors and player "housing", the ability to customise those ship interiors.

I’ve begun to notice the foundations of a shift into genuine live service. Ever since Odyssey was released, updates have been whole numbers without any of the 15.X.X goofiness. In addition, after Odyssey began to move the plot with Salvation, Elite suddenly gained a brand new subtitle. Now, post-proteus wave, Elite is now Elite Dangerous: Aftermath.
What does Frontier do that other LS devs do?
    - a weekly blog discussing dev insight, future updates, community showcases, etc.
    - a weekly livestream talking about development of the game.*
    - cosmetic micro-transactions
    - an evolving, quarterly storyline
The only thing that’s keeping Elite from full-fledged Live Service status is a season pass model.
    *not all devs do livestreams

  • @dwsnz
    @dwsnz ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good recap. Sure the pace of change is way too slow but it does get there eventually, even if it is repeatedly demonstrated including in this video to be not followed up on, or added too/fleshed out, or expanded where we can see glaringly obvious opportunities for them to do so. Its eternally frustrating. As others have mentioned on foot war efforts are the most conspicuous in their absence. Even if it was just more abandoned settlement missions (e.g. recover data left behind by fleeing occupants) with very limited Tharg combat until they get really pissed off with us... Frontline services should then become like Starship Troopers, not just the mercenary sign up for human squabbles.

I was an early adopter when Elite launched, have racked up several thousand hours in game, and from the beginning I always had issues with Frontier padding every single feature with grind and RNG while making the gameplay the bare minimum of acceptable complexity, and often less than even that. After charging folks two hundred dollars for early access and then shipping a game that didn't even have a working chat window, let alone any sort of party feature, it felt like a lot of us had been scammed. There were still those, of course, who would defend Frontier's bad faith behavior even back then. I waited and watched as we got Wings, Horizons, Engineers and other updates. I was the voice actor for Tiberius Darvil during the Rise to Power competition, representing the Mercs of Mikuun and the Border Coalition. I endured the soul-numbing grind to get the Federal Corvette and Imperial Cutter. I ran for a time with the Fuel Rats. But as time went by it became more and more apparent that Frontier was more interested in making a quick buck than in creating a good gameplay experience, and even many of their cosmetic monetized items were being sold in an unfinished, untextured state. I heard about Odyssey but knew deep down that it would be another colossal disappointment upon launch, because every single other one had been exactly that until that point. I finally logged out for the last time, well before Odyssey dropped, went to Star Citizen, and never once felt like coming back. That game, for all its flaws, despite being stuck in development hell and having only one star system explorable at time of writing, has delivered so much richer and deeper an experience in every conceivable way than ED ever did. Why? Because the dev team actually cares enough to communicate with its community and is doing its best to deliver on its lofty ambitions, as opposed to merely pretending.
Having seen this video just now.... I still don't regret leaving. I only regret ever having placed faith in FDev.

I would say that space legs is now in a shippable state, but that the ground game has almost wholly been abandoned. It is in an unpolished state and is still very cardboard. There has been no game story contents that uses it either.
I don't believe there has been any story content or events that are dependent on Odysessy. The ground game wasn't up to snuff. So what we got was pretty planet atmospheres and re-worked lighting. With the promise of events that couldn't be done in Horizons....
I am hoping that the delay feature rework will get the ground game to a current gen quality of first person shooter/explorer game.
I am also hoping that the ground engineering gets a re-work.
The bio discovery game mechanic is also due to for it's game mechanic that got pulled from the game, 2 years ago.
CQC needs some fixing (since 2017ish?).
The trade ratios need to relax.
Now we are getting into the weeds.....
The GUI, the lighting and the BGS thargoid layer is brilliant.
The ground game, bio discovery and engineering are very disappointing to me.
Really, make the ground game worth participating in and entertaining. That's what I would like.

I alpha tested and one aspect of planetary tech actually got worse (though I think it was done for optimization). In alpha there was much more biodiversity on planets. You wouldn't just find a few random plants scattered in a small area, but instead you'd encounter dense forests full of them with intermixed species. Felt very natural. The terrain just felt more random and natural and less like featureless hills.
    1:10, 1:45, 2:11, and 12:27 are good examples

The only way I see this game being saved is if they release a new engine that is optimized from the very start for all the features of the game so far. 60 fps with everything they wanted to add, along with fixed to the gameplay and addressing the things people wanted added or fixed in the game that has gone unanswered for the past several years.

In the days i played ground CZ with friend using ship, SRV, and foot. Here is the experience:
The anti air turrets are too good against ships. Albeit they can be disabled, they respawn in like 2 minutes, and you have to shut then down again. With 3 active turret this means that there is always one turret. So better to go low CZ where there are only one turret avaible, and you can shut down it.
Bombing the settlement from a ship is a working tactic, but not neccessary rewarding. You can land some well place missiles, which can turn the tide of the war, but from the ship, you can't see who is a foe and who is a friend. Still very raw, but is could have a potential.
Shoting down the dropin vultures has no value at al, if you shot them down, the enemy just appears out of thin air on the ground.
The scorpion SRV is useless in the ground CZ, it is quite good against ships however. Too bad there is no reason to shot ship from the SRV at the CZ.
Scarab SRV is quite good, but it can be shot down easily and there is no replacement.
All in all? There is a huge potential, but in its current form, it is very raw. Can be fun sometimes, but it lacks some many thing. The problem is that it is in this form like in 2 years, and i doubt it will change ever.

Core game mechanic is still being addressed. They made specific mention of it in a public release a couple of weeks back which we reported on. It's been pushed back to later in the year while they continue to work on it (iirc). O7

What a great game. I think the last piece missing here is base building. Then I think David Brabens masterpiece is complete. I remember how ARKs basebuilding just made me forget everything. I think companies underestimate the value of people being able to create and manufacture permanent things in a game. Using the ship, srv or space legs to gather resources for a permanent base anywhere in the galaxy is the final piece of the puzzle. And gather the community to beta test it and make it shine. Be able to build living quarters, landing pads, defences, trenches and walls. And hire guards to guard the base while you are offline. This would just tie everything together and E.D would have a huge boost in popularity. People would love to try out such a feature in the game. And also build depots where you can stack your resources and see it pile up. Well, maybe im just dreaming. But I really think Frontier should make a last effort to make it happen. It will be amazing.

Odyssey gets too much hate. While it does feel like it's missing a large new feature, it's still an awesome expansion that adds much to the original gameplay loop. When I get sick of flying and exploring, I like to set down on planets and scan plants or raid settlements. It breaks up the pace and keeps me invested in this awesome galaxy longer.

  • @Lordwinter15

Update 15 should give Galnet back to legacy version of the game so legacy players can hear the story at least.
Yes before I get slammed with hate comments I am a legacy player and no I wont go to odyssey or buy a pc my choice of course but what I am asking for is simple in nature and wouldn't be hard for FDEV to do.
After all legacy is still played by a great number of commanders at least on the xbox where I am at and we have loads of fun doing things and controlling our own BGS along with having our own player made conflicts from time to time.
Thats all from me O7 commanders and dont forget the limpets.

Still salty about Fdev's cancelation of console play. I know you can still "play," but it is not the same knowing the story has moved on. I did the account transfer, but my PC is not a gaming rig at all, so it is almost unplayable.

This seems like an attempt to hide what we all feel, ED is dying, for years there have been no real updates, just small bug fixes, that's not considered development. I understand that you are chosen as one of Frontier's TH-cam content developers, but some constructive criticism was missing.

The game isn't dying and these repeated comments are finally getting pushed where they belong...in the garbage. If you don't like the game, then go away. Seriously. This community is done with this bullshit. Get. Lost. You won't be missed.

Want to add my 2 pence worth and say that most of us who view Cmdr B's channel are of a similar age (within reason) and will know WHERE Elite started way back in 1984.
Been thinking about this and from 1984 to present Elite has CONSTANTLY been updated from the days of singular play on 80/90s technology to its Kickstarter year in 2014 to start its life in a more "life like" form on the intel/Amd technology of the time to what it's capable of now. Ok while not 100% brilliant it is playable to a reasonable satisfactory degree.
Also if the game was dying explain how a global player base (we've all seen Steam figures and yes they dropped around Ody release and the console no-go) is still ongoing and reasonably healthy. The squadron I'm in boasts 4200+ members globally and not to mention other squadrons of A LOT more members than mine. No need to be a maths genius, but that does equate to a large quantity of players who play this game we all love for our enjoyment and camaraderie.
Maybe you could be a bit more specific in what you mean in case it's been misunderstood. But if you want to bad mouth Elite that's fine but just be mindful that there is a portion of the player base who will disagree with you and you may just have to accept that.

Because of the mistake with O, they soon installed it. Currently the game is just dead. Even the war didn't produce much great. There is a lack of content that alternates, many do not want to see it and insist that everything is good. When you see that almost 45% of the players have withdrawn since December.

Steams player charts only reflect the players that play elite using the steam client. It's not a true representation of the playerbase. As long as frontier keeps chugging away the main playerbase will remain. Hell, look at me. I was abandoned on console and 2 years after, I managed to save up for a pc JUST to play odyssey. I can repect your opinion though. I definitely see your point. But, I'm fortunate enough to be back playing my favorite game.

    • @Isako93
      @Isako93 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jasonbonell4494 It's hard to say without a precise statement. If you know that the various pages here indicate something, it will be funny. Just the fact that you "have" between 13 million "players" is destroyed by the 8 million from "Epic Free" where some got 5-8 accounts. I didn't do it at all, I'm a fool :P. So you have 6 million players. If you assume 200,000 active players, that's roughly positive, that would be 3.3% of the total players.
At the end of the day, everyone wants their game to be big and have scope. 20 years ago I would have thought that Warhammer would be active once people knew it.

Honestly, this is extremely weak. They couldn't keep half of what the said they will and the game is almost at the level when Odyssey came out. I left it then. Seeing this video, even with the relative positive way of telling these changes couldn't bring me back, and honestly I just feel like a made a good decision.

    • @SimilakChild
      @SimilakChild ปีที่แล้ว +2

Star Citizen is WAY more buggier, has a smaller universe (consist of 4 major planets, a bunch of stations, and moons), NPC's stand there in T poses, game ALWAYS crashes (they call it 30k over there), but the graphics is probably the best i've seen out of any other PC game. also even on the best PC you will get 30 FPS or lower because they seem to have capped the max FPS on stations to 30 FPS for some unknown reason.
