I don’t believe this aria from Franco Corelli could ever be topped. I listened to three versions of Corelli singing this. The beautiful voice, passion, the timbre is perfection; the technique is a lesson in legato/portamento and at “Assai…..” the euphonious diminuendo-to-crescendo I cannot find in any other interpretation of L’anima ho stanca. Corelli surely must be the best tenor in opera history.
Gli anni d' oro di Franco/Dario , 1959 -1969 a mio avviso, li cambierei difficilmente con altri Tenori.E dentro ci metto anche qualche Leggendario ( come Lui) del primo 50 ennio del 900 Certo, poi, avremmo dovuto ascoltarli in Teatro......
Romanza ad hoc sul FA diesis e LUI ci spiega a profani e non come risolvere il punto di snodo fra i due registri, aprendo, chiudendo, smorzando facendo ciò che vuole Quello che Lauri Volpi chiamava punto di sutura fra petto e testa Corelli lo affronta senza mai affrontarlo di fatto ma carezzandolo a gola distesa, non sacrificata, facendolo galleggiare sempre sul fiato In sintesi un suono più aereo che fisico
He's nearly 50 here. There are wonderful recording from the 70s as well. So yes, while he may not have been in the best shape here, he still sounds quite thrilling. And he went on to sing for a few years afterwards as well.

The voice is in shape, he is a bit sloppy on the technical side on some occasions. And that makes the impression. And it is live.....
