  • There are a lot of assumptions and misperceptions around wildlife photography. Today, I'll be testing out some camo gear while adventuring in a mountain forest to see if it helps or not during my day out.

    I’ve been shooting bald eagles for past few years with no camouflage and the funny thing is they don’t care if I’m around but as soon as they see the camera they’re out. They’re so smart. I’ve been thinking about getting some camouflage hence the reason I found this video. Anyway, Thanks and nice work!

    My experience it works great for small birds and deer, but big birds like raptors and herons have much better vision, same with predator mammels like Martens, foxes, (big) cats, wolves, ...
    It helps a lot to have something behind you so you become one with your background and helps breaking up your silhouette, for example sitting against a bush or tree. I have had deers smelling me and my lens and martens and foxes playing around me like I wasn't there 😱 but like you said you need to move very slowly

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most definitely, all of what you shared is definitely true. It depends largely on species, movement, and your surroundings

      Also worth looking into "7 s of concealment" to become truly invisible ;)

    Hi nice video :-) I think camo is a 'double edged sword' in that it works well for some animals but others seem to be happy if they can see you as long as you are outside their 'circle of fear'. They then can keep an eye on you and some movement will be accepted but if you enter their 'circle of fear' then they will be off very quickly :-) The hard thing is knowing which technique is best for any particular subject/species but a little time spent photographing a chosen subject/species will tell a photographer which camp it falls into. Thats my experience anyway :-)

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most definitely you’re 100% right. It’s very species dependent and most animals do have a “circle of fear” like you said, that’s a good term for it haha.

    I always use my leafy camo suit here in uk woodlands. It does seem to work...especially with woodpeckers and deer/badgers etc...

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most definitely! There are certain species that it is especially impactful on. Woodpeckers are one that I can relate to on the experience.

    Man, came here from Hilliar :D
    Love your storytelling! Even though I am not into wildlife photography. Great sound and picture quality!
    A drone would be cool, to see the surroundings! Or a map that I know where you are. Eagle's eye!

      @JeremyNeipp  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome you came here from my comment on Hilliar's channel haha. Glad you like it even though Wildlife Photography isn't your thing, that's encouraging! I would definitely love to do drone work eventually, I haven't invested into that yet. I also have thought about a map before but I just haven't learned the Apple Motion skills to make it happen easily in my editing. I checked out your channel rn and you have some great editing skills! Are you an editor or is just a side hobby?

    Hello from Montreal, thanks for sharing another wonderful video 🐦❤️👍

    It depends on where and what you are photographing. If you are photographing where hunting is allowed some animals have become more in tune with recognizing camo. Especially prey animals. A lot of times animals will feel less threatened if you just act cool, maintain your distance, move slowly and allow them to become used to your presence. Extra care is called for when photographing in predator country. Every year where I live, one or two hunters, dressed from head to toe in desented camo, sneaking around bear and lion country, end up getting mauled. One place I have found camo useful is with birds, especially song and water birds. Some photos are impossible without a blind or camo.
    One final thought. As a good friend who wore nothing but camo while photographing in National Parks and sanctuaries where he was often standing next to dozens of tourists in bright tees, shorts and flip flops taking pictures of the same animal once told me, "I don't wear camo to hide from the animals, I wear it to hide from the people if I'm shooting something off the side of the road by myself!

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some good thoughts shared! I agree with your insights. Never heard of that hiding from people with camo but I like it haha.

    excellent video Jeremy, you know i never use hides no camouflage at all, as i do most of my birding in my garden, its just when i feel i want to be close to my birds i go out sit on a chair between some bushes and wait for thing to happen, usually this is next to feeder and water plates.
    when i go out in desert or shore for birding its usually the same i rely 100% on luck, most of the time my results are not that WOW, but sometimes a bird decide to come so close or just drop form nowhere right before me, and make my day. some birds accept me chasing them for branch to another or on different trees of rocks, and finally give me the chance for nice shot with good isolation, but in most cases they get mad and fly away.
    in my birding it 70%-80% no or poor results , the rest is just or much more then what i wanted.
    can't say that i am not sad when i don't get the results i want, yes get so depressed and sometimes i have dreams about those disappointing moments.
    but at the end i love the way i do birding, thought many times to use hides and camouflage, but i wonder will it really add more fun to me. you tell me.

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing and glad you enjoyed! Yea that can be a hard part about bird photography for sure. Camo has definitely helped in certain situations in my experience, but it's very reliant upon your scenario and situation. Even without the help, bird photography is largely so enjoyable do to it's experience, so if you prepare yourself in camo for an adventure, my mentality is it helps me feel more adventurous even without the results, so I thoroughly enjoy using it :)

    This camouflage clothing doesn't seem to do a great job in my opinion, it leaves a lot of skin uncovered, e.g. the forearms and wrists. I strongly prefer Ghosthood products with the ConCamo pattern, their products also do a lot better at breaking up the easily recognised shoulder/head-silhouette.
