    "Can I get that in writing?"
    "Are you sure you want to do that?"
    "You can certainly try."
    These phrases should be seen as warning flags the size of billboards. Anyone who ignores them does so at their own peril.

    The toothbrush story reminds me of a problem my friend used to have. The apartment building she lived was made of concrete slabs and boards that were manufactured off site and assembled on site. This makes most of such buildings conduct sounds very well for some reason. Her neighbor had a very active love life and both she and her partner were very vocal about it. The problem my friend had was they woke her up with their "sounds of nature" and interrupted her study time. Finally she asked me, what to do. I told her:
    "Next time they start to yell their pleasure, cheer them like a sports team."
    So she did. When they started, she would sit on her bed next to the wall and yell stuff like "Do her harder!" "Great job!", "Make him praise the Lord", etc. She would clap, tell them not to stop, praise their stamina, and so on. After two days they started to be more considerate and quieter...

      That’s extremely imaginative and amazing! When I had _loud_ neighbours living above me I would play “dodgy 80s p0rn music” LOUDLY, or interject with commentary
      “She’s obviously faking, man, she ain’t worth your time!”
      “She sounds faker than Paris Hilton!”
      “I’ve heard better performances in the emergency room!”
      They quickly stopped being super loud, and always kept their eyes low when walking by my windows LMAO

    First Story: Seems like people don’t learn. The moment someone ask for something in writing, that should be an immediate sign to re-think their decision. The COO really did deserved to get fired for this
    Second Story: Well, OP did all of this was done for a 10% discount for a pizza. The level of pettiness is crazy
    Comment: That guy is a real one to print out the flyer right then and there lol. Gotta get those discounts
    Third Story: The roommate brought that on himself. What he asked for was creepy as hell. Something tells me he does things to himself whenever he hears vibration coming from OP's side. I don’t get why he got uncomfortable though, OP did exactly what he asked
    Comment: Um ok? I don’t know what to say about this one but good luck in that roommate in not getting caught
    Fourth Story: The boss really expected OP to continue to work extra hours for free? OP did nothing wrong and worked the assigned hours and went home
    Fifth Story:U would think upper manangement would get rid of a guy who caused an ex employee to file a lawsuit and win it. This man shouldn’t have an form of power if he is being biased and doing all of this to just the female staff

  • @undrhil
    @undrhil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    In the pizza story, that sounds like a great way to make an extra buck or 2. Just stand outside with your mobile phone and offer to call in orders for people who have not called in in order so that they can get the discount. Just charge a dollar to use your phone. Win win! And I doubt they took the code away because of this compliance it was probably only going to be on there for a week or so anyway.

      @sabrinaheizenrader5635 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty much everybody has a cell phone these days. The people you tell about the discount would just call it in themselves rather than pay somebody a dollar to call it in for them. And 10% off a pizza is probably around $1 anyways.

  • @BronzeDragon133
    @BronzeDragon133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I worked my butt off for a company where time off was "at the discretion of the supervisor" (in writing). I started having medical issues, at which point it verbally became "you need to call me and the answer will be no."
    I told my boss that it needed to be in writing. He told me he wasn't going to do that, so...no, the change didn't exist to me. It didn't exist when HR refused to put it in writing. When his bosses wouldn't put it in writing. When the VP wouldn't put it in writing. When my lawyer demanded it in writing, especially. When I quit, it still didn't exist in writing, although I heard they did change the policy soon after (and started to bleed people due to that and other changes).
    Too bad, so sad.

    Every single time an employee asks you (if you're management) if they can get your request in writing, that should cause immediate pause. That should tell you that they are doing a cya & you will take this hit if/when it blows up. Make sure it's both worth it & that your career can bounce back from taking that hit.
    Once in awhile it is worth it but more often, it isn't & taking a bit to think if there is a different solution is a way better option than plowing ahead.

    The pizza story reminds me of when I tried to phone in a order to the local pizza place years ago when I visited my Mom. Mom said they never pick up the phone but I insisted on at least trying. They picked up but immediately put me on hold. I had waited for a few minutes when my Mom told me to get into the car but wouldn't tell me where we were going. About 10 minutes later we arrive at the pizza place and I am STILL on hold. When we walked in there was a worker standing at the cash register ready to take orders but there was nobody in line. She greeted us and with my phone still at my ear I asked "don't you have someone on hold?" That resulted in a panicked expression and a few obscenities uttered as she rushed to grab the phone. It was obvious she forgot about my call. She took me off hold and said a tentative "Hello" not realizing it was me and expecting them to have hung up. I say with her hearing me both in person and thru the phone "at this point I'll just order in person".

I am a resident advisor at my college and part of my job is room inspections and policy enforcement and you wouldn't believe how many animals are snuck into dorms. Like even some strange ones, 2 ferrets, a tarrantula, and a rain frog come to mind. One person had a cat tree, litter box, travel carrier, and cat toys and they swore up and down that they didn't have a cat. We couldn't take any action against them because without seeing the cat, we had no proof that would hold up. It took 2 years but eventually he was found with a cat in his room.

Most likely they're trying to boost their phone sales, and thus you apply a discount on those ones, but if you applied a discount to a regular sale (which I guess their cash register system doesn't allow to) you could get in trouble. Also passing a regular sale as a phone sale could mean fraud depending on the local legislation.
    Stop thinking you're the man and follow instructions. Don't make minimum wage workers days worse just because you want stuff your way. Be thankful you never had to work those mind numbing, yet exhausting jobs.

    At no point will the telephone discount stories ever be believable. That there’s places that do it, sure, but no one, and I mean NO ONE working minimum wage at the front counter is going to get pissed that someone does it, even if their manager is strict about only phone customers. Seriously, why would Bob the register guy give a flying crap? Why would he feel sooooo owned that a custy called in after being told nope? He wouldn’t, at all.

    That totally happened to me at an IHOP, I had an email coupon for a free meal. I showed it to my waiter and they gave me the meal and everything. When I went to the register to show they my coupon, they said they couldn't use it because it had to be printed on paper, when they could clearly see the coupon in my email. The manager insisted on me paying and I was really upset. It's just stupid. I never went back there again cause that was just uncalled for.

    Story 1 - I worked in a transport company 2 years ago. This guy worked for our client as the procurements manager but had his own business. He would request we mail him a quotation for services then he would add his 25% and quote the company he would work for. One night I am having dinner with a group of friends and family and the MD of the Client happened to be there as a friend. He asks me why we never quote his company for work, as he had been trying to push work through us. Long story short I blind copied the MD in the next quotation. Up to this point we were unaware what was happening just that we were losing the work. We knew we were not the cheapest so figured we did not match the budget. But once that email when out his exercise was unraveled
    Turned out over the 10 years he had siphoned around 100k USD through various orders

  • @tiffany02020
    @tiffany02020 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the second story: literally every place I’ve worked at has said that they consider coupons money. Any kind of discount, code, whatever it is, is money. Any mishandling of that coupon or code has the risk of being considered the mishandling of cash money. And every place I’ve worked at has a Different way of inputting coupons or discounts. Some places I had lots of autonomy and could easy just be like yeah here’s the discount go ahead. Other places I couldn’t and it had to be scanned in or input to the computer a certain way or I could lose my job for “stealing”.
    Point is, generally speaking employees aren’t trying to screw you over or trying to be a butthead. And they prob get yelled at a lot for the exact issue. If you are having an issue with a coupon or a discount assume lots of other ppl are too. This makes the employees feel jaded and cornered and defensive. Have patience, read the fine print and just be chill about it.

      Not sure why everyone assumes the guy at the counter is also making pizzas. Typically not the case in my experience. Frankly if he wouldn't accept in person orders for the discount because of the boss' rules, he should have just said that. Not sure why he'd be angry at a customer making the sensible decision to call from a mobile phone. That makes me wonder if the counter guy was actually the owner! What employee would care about that?

    I currently work in a pizza place, that second story about sums up some of our customers, but there is a little bit of an exception. Sometimes there is a special offered online and we have no option in the store to honor it so we have to try and explain to people that although they are here now in order to get the discount they MUST order online because no manager is going to override a 50% discount randomly because someone doesn't know how to use an app or a website.

OP should've waited for the next time he ordered a pizza for the discount. Call it in and then pick it up and get your 10% off. It's not a malicious compliance, it's just being petty.

    2nd story: OP is being a jerk. They obviously give that discount because people calling ahead of time helps them manage the work load more efficiently. If they gave the discount to a guy who came in and ordered, already inconveniencing them, it defeats the purpose. Can't stand people like that, looking to exploit struggling businesses for free stuff. A normal person would be like, "Okay, cool, next time I'll order over the phone." OP is petty and selfish. Also, you know that guy had his pizza spit on.

    In Australia there's this thing where employers have the option to advertise for juniors (anyone under age 21) this comes with a smaller hourly rate because they're young and learning. #1- I don't understand how this doesn't cross the discrimination boundary, I mean I can't advertise work for white people only- that would be racist right, but aboriginal jobs only, is also accepted 😳 the irony, right 🤮 #2- age should not play a part in someone's skill level, my daughter is 11 and knows tech better than me, but as an adult with dementia and mobility issues, I need just as much time and effort to train than a junior as I need supervision and may need to ask questions if I forget what I was supposed to be doing... but no, as a 35 yo woman, my pay rate is higher, why would a company employ someone more expensive when they can exploit a young person to do the same job, for less
