Today we're in Tlaxcala. Never heard of it, right?
    Tlaxcala is the smallest state in Mexico, located just north of the state of Puebla and east of Mexico City. Some even say it's not even a state! It is totally overshadowed by it's neighbours and in some ways, ignored! Until now...
    Tlaxcala has a great history with Hernan Cortes and the Spanish. It has everything you expect from Mexico from outstanding churches such as the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Ocotlan as well as one of the oldest cathedrals in Mexico, a bullring and stunning food.
    Also in thet state of Tlaxcala, you can visit archeological sites, visit in firefly season, climb Mexico's MONSTER Mountain (Malinche) as well as visit countless museums.
    Tlaxcala was just 'average' when I got there - I was influenced by people saying I shouldn't bother. They were wrong.
    MUSIC - (all Epidemic Sound)
    "Tomorrow, If You Let Me" - Gavin Luke (intro & church ending)
    "My Sombrero for your Gun" - Sight of Wonders (Bullring)
    "FOMO" - James Wahlsteen (beginning & escalanitas)

    Oh, I have definitely heard of this state. Namely because of Tlaxcala’s history with the Aztecs. Montezuma himself described them as something for his warriors to toy with during the Wet Season. The Tlaxcaltecs were famed for their hatred of the Aztecs, as they would constantly abduct people from Tlaxcala for human sacrifice, and even go to war with them. This was why they allied themselves with Hernán Cortés and his coalition of Conquistadors and Totonac allies. Mind you, Cortés wrote in his accounts that he once fought the Tlaxcaltecs before allying with them, as they saw the Spaniards initially as enemies, the battle even resulted in the deaths of two of Cortés’ prized horses. However, the battle soon dragged into a draw, and it was clear that the Tlaxcaltecs couldn’t hold out against the Spanish forever. Impressed by the Spaniards’ prowess in battle, they decided to make peace, and an alliance was made. Even after the Spanish conquest, the Tlaxcaltecs retained their independence and status as allies of Spain for three centuries.
    Tlaxcala didn’t become a part of an independent Mexico until 1856.

    I TOTALLY LOVED THIS VIDEO! And I get it, it happened to me when I visited Tlaxcala, many people from Mexico City and Puebla asked me why I wanted to go over there and I was gladly surprised with what I saw and experienced. Some people with regionalistic pride will say that about San Luis Potosi, Campeche, Nayarit or Colima, and guess what, I had so much fun and I was surprised without all that tourists walking around. I'm glad you loved Tlaxcala.

    I hope my comment is not insulting to anyone. To your comment that Mexican bakeries might not be as good as Japanese or Korean bakeries. This summer I had the fortune to visit japan 🇯🇵 and I tried many Japanese bakeries, the texture and execution is impecable, however, their pastries taste overwhelmingly eggy. If that’s your cup of tea go for it but I personally think Mexican bread is better. Specially sweet bread. Greetings!

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's really interesting as for a Brit, bakeries are always about savoury items, sausage rolls, chicken pies etc. It seems bakeries in Mexico have only sweet items!

      Elsa you haven’t visit 32 states in Mexico to visit all bakeries plus in Mexico we really have a lot vegetables and fruits that you will never find in Japan either plus visit Mexico city its in the fifth city with more museums in the world the first one its London! I heard Japan has one the best wisky in the world but we tepache and pulque beverages from our ancestors we don’t have to copy any others because when Spaniards we have a great civilization already.

    Thank you for your videos. You have been sort of a guide at times during my time here in Mexico. I have been in Mexico City-Guadalajara-Zacatecas-Sayulita-Chacala and now Morelia in the end. I don't think you visited Morelia? You should. I mean, I prefer the coast to the colonial cities, but this has been my favourite. The problem with the coast is it's too damn popular, while here I don't see any tourists! The food is also very cheap compared to other Mexican cities. Did you find it easy to meet people during your trips here? I don't speak Spanish, so I have mostly met foreigners.

      Hey man, re getting around, I do drive but never driven in Mexico, the bus system is world class (not sure if you've been before). This video is a bit old but I went to Tlaxcala direct from Mexico City, about 2hrs. From Tlaxcala there are good connections to of course Puebla and states like Hidalgo. To get to little towns in Puebla I think youd have to go through Puebla.
