Game-Changing Treatments for Methane SIBO You're Missing!

  • In this video, I'm going to talk about front-line treatments for methane SIBO, a condition that I frequently treated in my clinical practice here in Byron Bay, Australia. Methane is a condition driven by methane producing archaea in the gut that produce an excessive amount of gas, resulting in constipation and sluggish digestion, bloating, and distension. If you wake up bloated and distended before food, methane may be playing a role in your symptoms. Gassy, burping and abdominal pain are other common symptoms.
    Testing for the presence of methane is crucial, and a SIBO breath test can help you get an idea of how aggressive the treatment needs to be. An excessive amount of methane ranges from 20 parts per million, which is a mild case, to anything above 60 parts per million, which is an extreme mega methane case.
    The fundamental treatments for methane SIBO involve breaking the slow motility and transit time, which includes breaking the vicious cycle of constipation. The goal is to see a significant improvement in bloating and distension, gas, and abdominal pain. If you're curious about how to track your bowel transit time, check out my video on that topic.
    If you're dealing with methane SIBO I recommend focusing on the fundamental treatments to improve your digestive symptoms down the track. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe to my channel for more informative content like this!

    God, Todd, thank you so much for your videos, for the time and effort that you invest into making your knowledge available to the public❤ I, for one, literally took notes of everything you said in the video about herbs for constipation, and I feel like I learned invaluable pieces of information. Now I have a whole arsenal to work with, to get that motility going, and the bast part is that it's all natural remedies. Thank you a million times, in my name and in that of the countless others you help🙌. Also, I can't wait for that video with root causes of constipation!

    If you suffer hypersensitivity in the gut it is caused by H2 H2s with a lot of pain in the lower bowel, as you evacuate. Plus the position you sit on the throne is so important, sit with feet on a stool, knees up with back straight, if you can..helps straighten that bowel tube, especially around the sigmoid colon.

    Hello ~ I just want to say thank you Todd for making your videos accessible to the average person. Where I live in Wisconsin USA, the average doctor knows nothing about SIBO. Even GI docs refuse to test for it, instead everything is clumped under the diagnosis IBS. This diagnosis hasn't helped me really, instead I feel it has harmed me. The meds that I was on for years to reduce stomach acid, I believe helped create my methane SIBO. I only was able to begin to heal after doing intense research on my own.... My family doctor has accepted my research and helps me manage things, however he has very little knowledge on the subject.
    Thank you sooooo much for being a supporting player in this journey.

      @@ByronHerbalist Here is a question... What is your feeling regarding biofilms? I believe that I have methane SIBO. Twice I failed after doing a serious treatment plan and once I began to reintroduce foods (carefully) my symptoms were as bad as before within 3ish months. Soooo round #3 ~ I came across a practitioner in the UK who has lots to say about biofilms and said the only way he cured his SIBO was by busting up those biofilms.
      Since I have no clue what I am doing and because he makes sense I looked more into it and found a lot of people saying the same thing. Fast forward a few months... I have been taking the enzymes and actually I see a huge change.

    I alternate between diarrhoea & constipation but 95% is diarrhoea. I get mildly constipated about twice a month. I’ve been bed bound with SEVERE constant cramping for 2 years, severe acid reflux, CFS, aches & pains, nausea & vomiting but the worst symptom is flatulance. Literally gas comes out every minute of the day & smells sometimes like rotten eggs 🤦🏼‍♀️ sorry for tmi. I get pain after ANYTHING I eat, especially fatty foods. So I stick to a liquid diet. My gastro suggested sibo a year ago but I had a surgery for endometriosis and they found HUNDREDS of adhesions. Spent 7 hours burning them apart but had to leave some around my small bowel as was too dangerous to remove. So I dismissed SIBO & declined the test as thought all my symptoms were partial bowel obstructions & adhesion related. But my corelectal surgeon said he doubts the adhesions are causing such severe issues. But I didn’t know if SIBO can cause such severe symptoms either? There are a number of things that could have caused it if I do have SIBO. I have an incurable brain condition that causes me a lot of pain aswell as the abdo pain, so I’m on high dose opioids and even with them i still have diarrhoea or loose stools. But they could have caused gastroperasis which is something else they have mentioned I may have. I have endometriosis which can also apparently cause it, I also had a surgery to remove a branchial cysts to my neck & it’s been suggested there may have been damage to my vagus nerve causing these issues. I also nearly died from severe sepsis & had very strong antibiotics for at least a month. I’ve asked to be weaned off all opioids to eliminate them being the cause, even if it leaves me in unbearable pain. But I cannot manage that until my pain is controlled & I have such a huge tolerance that only more opioids would control it which I can’t have. So I’m hoping & praying my sink test comes back positive so I can’t at least try & treat it, if it is down to adhesions I can’t have another surgery as it’s far to dangerous & my pain is VERY difficult to control due to my tolerance. I can only imagine how severe my diarrhoea would be without all the opioids! I wake up & within seconds I’m in such unbearable pain I vomiting & sometimes pass out, but get ALOT of relief once I’ve emptied my bowels? I pass stools 3-4 times a morning over a hour period. They look oily and float most of the time. I’d say loose stools rather than diarrhoea. Is it possible to have such severe symptoms from sink? This has been going on 3 years with no tea & I’ve had so many scans and nothing shows, but no other investigations really. I had a raised fecal calprotectin also. I’m very scared though if I have it that antibiotics & a special diet won’t fix this. And if the cause is the adhesions then it will keep happening 😢

    Triphala saved my ass. Literally. Low FODMAP was a game changer for me as well. Candibactin AR and BR. Or even Oreganol drops in C8 MCT helped greatly. And of course Allicin. All of these are well known in the SIBO community. But for me....nothing changed until i started using Tripaha every morning and night. Tastes terrible in tea form. Tablets are not close to as strong but work. And Low FODMAP. Had no idea my favorite things like Avos and Sweet potatoes were causing so much bloating and pain. There are times i only eat a few things now. Things i know that ruin me. So i eat Grilled chicken and Romaine. Ground Turkey. No eggs. Red meat takes forever for me to digest so i quit. I eat very few things now. They have to be low FODMAP. Many of the plant based proteins make me inflame Pea Protein etc. Celery Juice every morning also was really helping my motility. Great success with Florastor probiotic...and Digest Gold enzymes. Klaire labs Interfase Plus really gets after biofilms. I also liked what Neem Plus did for me but im sensitive to Neem and Tea Tree Oil. But Celery Juice seemed to do a lot of the Kill Phase for me. I dont think ill ever be free from this...but i have lost 80 pounds and obsess over my gut now. Diet and exercise are a must. All the herbs in the world may help motility etc...but i didnt have the results i wanted until i started moving. 4 miles a day. Thanks for the video.

The idea of trying to conquer my SIBO while not using a low FODMAP diet though makes no sense to me now.

    @judyjung I didn’t have a lot of the common symptoms like constipation, bloating, or irregular bowel movements. I had a little bit of flatulence but not heaps. My main symptoms were more NERD/GERD type symptoms like swollen glands in my neck masses of brain fog, really tired and wiped out and minor reflux. But I knew 99% sure it was methane SIBO because I was measuring my gas levels with the FoodMarble. I was initially focusing on eliminating FODMAP foods and using specific probiotics but it wasn’t working. My understanding and experience of the elemental diet is that it starved off the methanogens and reset my gut. And I only did it 3 days and then started eating meat and rice only but then realized I didn’t need to do that and can eat more freely. I still have some foods that will spike my gas levels but they drop down to almost zero pretty quickly now as opposed to staying high all the time.

    I tried everything for my stomach, low fodmap, gluten free, completely removed carbs and sugar for a long time (I still keep it very low amounts because sugar bothers me right away, along with fried foods and such), these things helped but not totally. The only thing that helps 100% is high dose of magnesium before bed. The next morning after it “works”, I feel totally better. Like amazing. Until about 2pm. Then it starts all over again. Just ordered a sibo methane test. Problems with digestion since my childhood (born 1976). Then 2002 a disc prolapse made all worse. 11 days no stool. Then it comes again felt better but tinnitus and anxiety appeared. The flares came and go, slowly gotten worse with years. 2015 lyme was diagnosed. Antibiotics never helped. With 24w in 3 wavesi killed my gut i think. Last year made 2 complete microbiomanalysis. First Lactos, Bifidos, E Coli, Enterococcus nearly down to 0. Long probiotics. All back ok except enterococcus (still low). Bowel movement very very slow. H2 sibo test negative last year. Tried out to eleminate lyme naturally and think it worked. Last LTT test first negative in 7 y. But symptoms still there. My guess methane sibo with additional things and autoimmune probs. Allergies appeared and histamine intolerance also. Allicin, Oregano oil, cumanda, Rizol, all tried with natural Herbs. Also MSM tried and all helped 2-3 weeks, then constantly worsened again. Main cause i guess its sibo: Diverticulosis, and Last y after disc prolapse surgery where i go antibiotics to prevent infection, symptoms all gone after 3 days. Lasts for 3 weeks then all went down again. I think definitly a bacterial issue in the gut. At the Moment taking procinetics (resolor) cause herbal ones doesnt work anymore 😢. Anxiety maybe a cause either but in relationship with tinnitus and Sibo (also inflamed stomach since 5y) is a devils circle. Sonetimes when all is out of the gut if feel suddenly better and anxiety went away instantly

My recent hydrogen score was 68 ppm and Methane 15 ppm...even though the methane score is relatively low, constipation has been a MAJOR issue. After months of trialing different things and experimenting with upping dosages I have landed on a pretty extreme daily regiment that has seen daily results for the last 4 days.
    So, every day I take:
    1mg Plucaropride
    2 sachets of Laxido / Movicol
    5 tablets of gut motility (a mixture of ginger and artichoke extract)
    4 tablets of Choline
    1 milk thistle tablet
    Lots of water
    This feels really extreme but honestly, it seems like my gut motility was destroyed! I want to start scaling back on some of these things but I need to ensure I'm having regular BM's
    In addition I have also been rotating oregano oil, allicin, neem, berberine and grapefruit seed extract daily. I also take a biofilm disruptor every couple of days.
    I am pretty much following the SCD diet however I make sure I eat a small amount of carbs every day (50g) or at least every other day as I have read that the bacteria can hibernate if it is completely starved which make it harder to kill. I don't know if this is true.
    I really don't know if all this will work and I appreciate I have thrown a lot at it but I have been desperately unwell and needed to do something. In addition to the constipation, I have severe bloating (which has started to improve), brain fog, fatigue and stomach pain. I often feel like my intestines are super inflamed. I feel tired all the time :(
    I have another breath test scheduled for 2 weeks time and if I have made no improvement on the SIBO I will likely drop the natural supplements and try antibiotics. If that fails I will try the elemental diet for 2 weeks. All this whilst still working on my motility which I understand to be critical.
    How can I test my emptying time? Any other suggestions or thoughts on my approach to trying to beat this thing and get my life back?

      Does the choline ginger and artichoke seem to help? I'm thinking of loading up on those. I have sulfur and candida issues. Haven't been tested for methane or sulfide, just hydrogen and tested negative. But I know that I have fungal overgrowth because symptoms lessened temporarily after trying an antifungal. I'm always on constipated side but getting better with a few minerals but trying to get things moving faster in anyways possible.

      @dprice81 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also have you tried using Bismuth? I heard it can help but I wouldn't get Pepto because of all the terrible inactive ingredients they add to it.
      Completely emptying the bowels reminds of doing vitamin c flush. Have you ever done one? That completely will empty everything once you get to a high enough dose.
      I did a low carb diet and it seems to quiet everything down but I had no energy and I'm sensitive to caffeine so I was just this really low energy anxious sad person. I would rather eat more carbs and suffer then be completely miserable with my gut being quiet. So ya going off low carb, whatever causes it comes back.

    After the breath test, I was diagnosed with methane SIBO. I was constipated my whole life. But, for months now, I have diarrhea almost every time I eat. So, do I have methane-hydrogen SIBO? I have been ingesting expensive Probiotics since at least, October 2023. Have not been constipated since. Low FODMAP is very restrictive, and does not seem to work. I am thinking of trying the elemental diet. My last try, before I try xifaxin. I got this way taking too many antibiotics. I truly do not want to try another. So, what do I do? I am tired of having no friends. Not being able to eat out. I can go nowhere, unless I fast. With porphyria, I am not supposed to fast, but, I need to go to doctors, pharmacy, and other personal emergent problems. I am just existing. No life. No love. I feel chained to my toilet.

    My methane peaked at 160, and I definitely never find other people stating theirs was that high... but considering the medical system failed me since childhood and left me getting worse for decades, I'm not surprised it was off the charts. I've done a total of 18 weeks of herbal antimicrobials within the past year, am still completely allergic to being alive from histamine intolerance, and my doctor refused retesting for SIBO. I keep having to tell myself that maybe it just hasn't been long enough for those insane numbers to come down. It's ridiculous that they won't let me retest, because I pleaded with them saying my case is complicated because I've seemingly had both SIBO and mast cell issues from such a young age that I can't be sure which condition came first. My biggest fear is that I cure the SIBO but stay sick with a permanent mast cell disease.

But after years of going down the rabbit hole and filtering through what seems like a million different health conditions I've had going on, I think I finally have my answer of what's really going on. It turns out that I have a salicylate sensitivity, and looking back on my life, I've probably had it since birth. It's most of what's been driving my mast cells absolutely insane, it's causing all my cognitive dysfunction and mental illness, I'm guessing it probably played a role in developing SIBO, and led to endless other complications. It can be so insidious because it's threshold based and also has almost complete overlap with the symptoms and trigger foods of histamine intolerance (which it also caused me). I even knew that this was a possibility and still didn't think I had it until a lot of realizations recently. Maybe I'll recover now.

And if symptoms subside after methane is treated for a year but later return/relapse, (as they have in my 8 yr old daughter's case), and they're the EXACT same symptoms, is another breath test really necessary or can't we just go straight to treatment based on last year's numbers (hydrogen still elevated) and current clinical presentation? I really cant stress enough how much this has changed things in just a few days already, my swelling and inflammation had been so bad there would be blood sometimes, since the garlic bulbs theres been no supplements or laxatives (i wanted to isolate the garlic to be sure it is that responsible for the effects) and ive went twice today already, and they are actually pieces of shit and not just little broken pff bits or splatter from so much laxatives. You can add salt and pepper also to season, im confident if it keeps improving at this rate im as good as cured, don't take my word for it, try it and let me know please, best of luck.

      @@ByronHerbalist I saw that you mentioned it in another source after I posted this. I've been dealing with gut issues and am going to try rock rose and a few other things you mentioned in your methane case study.

    Do SiBO affect your tongue, I have indents on the sides of tongue from time to time, but it disappears if I hold my tongue out for a few mints, but once I close it, I can feel it again.

    I have chronic constipation, I got a gi map test and had an over growth of psuedomonas species. I have not had a breath test done yet. Can sibo be treated with antibiotics.?

      @robertolivarez5742 ปีที่แล้ว

      @KIke190JRF idk yet I just started antibiotics 4 days ago, I'm definitely going more frequent and feel better then before. I don't feel bloated or discomfort in my lower left abdominal like I did before. I don't know if it's gonna last after I'm done with treatment. One thing I found that helped me go was dr schulzes intestinal formula #1. Take two or three of them at night and you'll go the next day.

    I noticed you haven't had any videos on h2s sibo. Is methane much more common then hydrogen 2 sulfide?

    • @ByronHerbalist
      @ByronHerbalist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see it more commonly. H2S can be a real grind to resolve but there is heaps of interest in it. Would you prefer a quick overview with actionable insights or a longer deep dive?

    • @dprice81
      @dprice81 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ByronHerbalist I'm not sure. I just want to stop struggling so hard, get better, and move on with my life. I've been struggling with gut issues for 25 years now. I know it's not hydrogen. But I know I'm intolerant to sulfuric foods which leads me to believe that I'm dealing with h2s. I also know I've had candida because I had my doctor prescribe an antifungal a few years back. My symptoms were gone for 2 years and came back when I ate mushrooms that were starting to go bad. So I believe I'm dealing with h2s and candida. That's my best guess as my breath test for hydrogen was negative. Was prescribed rifaximin by itself and it literally did nothing to help my symptoms. I've heard sometimes someone can have h2s and methane but since I haven't had a trio test, idk about methane.

      If you have IMO (Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth), that's the subject of this video, why not try his suggestions 1st (3:35). There is no mention of trying to kill anything until you get your gut transient time down to below 36 hours (and that's only if you still have symptoms).

      Those are both harsh herbs on the stomach lining. It has probably caused gastritis. If you are still having pain and problems try drinking Cabbage juice daily for at LEAST 7 days. It repairs stomach mucosa rapidly. Google cabbage juice for gastritis.
